Troubled Nigel blessed by love and a new life Kathryn Vukovljak reports

GOING off the rails with drugs and alcohol as a teenager left Nigel MacDonald in desperate need of help.

Twenty years ago as a troubled 22-year-old, Nigel joined the Bridge Program (Addiction Recovery) run by the Salvation Army in Canberra, where he says he was given a chance at life – and found love with his now wife and Salvos colleague, Sandy.

“It took a while for me to feel I needed to be in rehab, but I wanted to see it through, as up until that point I had never finished anything before,” says the Salvation Army captain.

Having grown up with a single mum in Sydney, Nigel said his life was “pretty good” until high school, when he found he wasn’t coping well with his parents’ separation.

“They split when I was two, and although my dad was around, he wasn’t there as he should be, which affected me a lot as a teenager,” he says.

“I was longing to be accepted, but I found it in the wrong places and with the wrong people.”

Nigel says that from 15 to 17 he was on a downward spiral.

“I fell apart, basically,” he says. “I was taking a lot of party drugs like cocaine, LSD and ecstasy, and the addiction was so time-consuming – I was out of it most of the time. When I left school, it was hard to hold down a job and at one point I stole money from my employer.”

“Of course, nothing changed; the turmoil was in me, and I realised I had to deal with it in order to be fixed and helped,” he says.

“The crunch came when I had been couch surfing for a while. One night I had nowhere to go, and I slept behind an apartment block. The fact that I had nothing and no one, and was sleeping

in the street, rocked my world.”

After this, Nigel says he moved to Jindabyne to live with his mum, who has since passed away.

“She called the Salvos and there was a bed available on the Bridge Program, a year-long residential rehab program in Canberra, and I took the opportunity,” he says.

“It was a real struggle, day to day. I was truly facing my demons, but every day I faced them, I

released them.”

After the year was up, Nigel says he had a period of reconnecting with family and friends and making up for past transgressions, but most significantly, it was who he met while in rehab that shaped his future.

“Sandy is a Salvation Army girl, and we met through organised events with her church,” he says.

“We felt connected to each other and a friendship blossomed. We got engaged a year after the program finished.”

The couple entered college together as a married couple in Sydney, entering the Officer Training Program, and have now been officers for 13 years, with eight years in Youth and Children’s work. Nigel currently serves in Canberra as the youth secretary.

“Youth is a passion of ours and we wanted to work in it together as a team,” says Sandy. “We have individual skills and experiences but together we want to reach out to the wider community.

“Family is so important, to give time to each other. We have a nine-year-old boy and a sixyear-old girl and, of course, raising our own family is trial and error, but we try to create balance and make time for them in a family context.”

Nigel says: “We want to help children at a young age to make healthy choices that will set them up for life. It’s the same when we see kids getting themselves into trouble with drugs.

“I see myself when I see them, and I want to help.”

The Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock will be held on the weekend of May 30-31.

Pants are safe, despite the Budget’s red ink dose of dorin

There were times when watching Hockey’s stroke play that he seemed to be batting for the other side.

I’VE seen a lot of Budgets in my time, but Joe Hockey’s second turn at the crease this week was easily the most confusing.

There were times when watching his stroke play that he seemed to be batting for the other side. The debt and deficit emergency that scared the pants off us last year had magically disappeared, even though the bottom line of the score sheet was a blaze of red ink.

Now, instead of tightening our national belt, it was “spend, spend, spend”. The wonder is that only his Coalition confederates rose to applaud him back to the pavillion at the end of his innings. The Labor fielding team just looked bemused.

In fact, when Opposition captain Bill Shorten opened the batting on Wednesday night he was moved to offer a couple of beers with PM Tony Abbott in the changing sheds to figure out a new tax system for the nation.

But while that seemed like a refreshing bipartisan change, the truth

is it was a calculated tactic to highlight the difference between Abbott’s take-no-prisoners opposition style and the less confrontational Shorten.

HOWEVER, Labor pulled no punches on the Government charges of mothers “double dipping” in the PPL, especially when it turned out that the wives of two of the Budget architects, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann and Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg were “guilty” of what their senior colleagues called a “rort”. Even former Abbott staffer, our own Guilia Jones MLA (best known for her round-the-world crusade on the plight of sex workers), said she was “appalled” by the charges.

In today’s media landscape where trivia rules, it’s just such stumbles that get the nation’s attention… almost as silly as the rumour planted by Coalition flacks that an early election is on the cards.

CLOSER to home ACT Education Minister Joy Burch copped her own birching from the teachers under her stewardship when they called for her to stand aside while they negotiated their pay deal with Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

The pedagogues are not happy with her pay offer of a 12 per cent rise over four years, which would give half of them a six-figure salary by the end of the agreement.

She held him in the back of their truck, took him home to shelter and gave him a feed. Next morning she took food and water.

“He looked at me,” she said, “postured again, then suddenly he reached out, took my hand in both of his and licked it.”

IT’S a good thing that Ricky Stuart has no interest in social media for if ever a coach was a constant topic on Twitter and on-line forums it is the Canberra Raiders’ coach.

When the Raiders were losing it was his fault and he couldn’t coach, despite everything he has achieved including coaching the Roosters to a premiership, Origin and Australia, called into question. When the team was winning it was due to the players!

To his credit he has ignored the critics and there have been plenty. He *4 week program, has stuck to his guns and believed in limited offer and what he was doing. SIX months ago I was reliably informed that Cricket Australia was considering placing the seventh team in the men’s domestic one-day series in Canberra.

It wouldn’t be the Comets resurrected, instead it would be a side made up of younger players contracted to existing teams but unable to force their way into the match-day XI on a regular basis.

I was told that Canberra was deemed to be an ideal base for the team because of the high level of coaching and facilities at Manuka.

Imagine my surprise when Cricket Australia opted to base a second team in Brisbane at the expense of a side based in Canberra. To my way of thinking, Cricket Australia has missed a chance to promote the code in the ACT and southern NSW region.

I AM hearing that the Canberra team in the National Rugby Championship in 2016 will revert back to being called the Kookaburras.

It has been the Canberra Vikings in the first and second seasons of the competition, but it is probably causing the Vikings Club more angst than it’s worth.

There is a perception that it is a Tuggeranong team and probably enhanced in the minds of many given 18 players in the 35-player training squad for next season come from the Vikings.

I know many won’t agree, but I think we should be grateful for the Vikings’ support. The money has come from the football club not the licensed club and the Vikings have taken a risk in funding the venture.

If it wasn’t for the Vikings, I doubt we’d have a team in the competition.

“All parts of the Death Cap mushroom are poisonous, and eating just one can be fatal. Cooking the Death Cap mushroom does not make it safe,” Dr Pengilley says.

Growing mainly near established oak trees, it can be extremely difficult for even experienced collectors to distinguish the small-button Death Cap from an edible mushroom.

Climate change up for debate

LOCAL girl Ruby Schofield is in line for the crown for Miss Universe Australia, and as the first ever representative of the ACT in the competition, a new sash is being designed especially for her.

“I’m the first ACT girl to get this far, so they said they would like me to be the first to have a sash saying I’m the ACT representative, even though I entered through NSW,” she says.

“It’s so exciting, as the ACT gets overlooked a lot of the time – we need more recognition; we’re the capital!

“So when the girls walk out from WA, NSW or wherever, I will be walking out totally on my own. I’m really proud to be able to represent Canberra and do the best I can.”

Ex-Daramalan student Ruby is one of nine NSW finalists in Miss Universe Australia, among 30 girls nationally, and the 20-year-old says she’s thrilled to have made it to this stage of the competition.

“At the event in Sydney, they didn’t announce my name along with the other girls, so I was tell-

ing myself to look gracious, accept it,” she says.

“In my head I was planning that I’d just go home and eat Thai food, but then they said: ‘Just kidding, there’s one more girl...’ and announced my name!

“It definitely made me more excited as it was so unexpected.”

Ruby tried out along with more than 1000 girls nationally, and now there are just 30 Australian girls left in the competition, with the winner to be announced on June 5.

“I’m proud to have got this far, as it’s a really long process,” she says.

“I think it’s helped with my confidence, and made me feel more self-assured in who I am. I’m really enjoying everything about it so far.”

The publicity from being in the finals has also secured Ruby a modelling contract with Chic Management in Sydney.

“The competition has brought me so much already, and I’m thrilled to have my first modelling contract,” she says.

“My boyfriend is a personal trainer, so I’ve been asking him to make me fit – but I’m not the biggest fan of exercise.

“He tells me he can’t help if I don’t actually get up and exercise,

but I need an incentive first, like the promise of getting a coffee afterwards!”

Currently studying Media Communications at UNSW and living in Clovelly, Ruby says she’s keen on a career in broadcast journalism, following a work-experience stint at Channel 10.

“I’d like to go into presenting, so hopefully the public speaking involved in Miss Universe Australia will help prepare me for that,” she says. “It’s daunting at first but I’m getting used to it.”

Ruby says she has thus far forbidden her parents from watching her compete in the competition, as she gets too nervous and shy.

However, she’s on the fence as to whether she will be happy to have them there for the finals.

“They’re all really proud though, and mum has been putting pictures of me all over her social media,” she says. “I competed last year, but only made it to the state finals, so it’s pretty exciting.

“I’m hoping to at least get top 10, as it can open so many doors.”

The final of Miss Universe Australia will be held in Melbourne on Friday, June 5.

It is the third year in a row that Daramalan College has received the golden gavel for Best Canberra Team.

Duck spin not what it seems Believing SPIN is fundamental to success in politics. It has to be right. When the spin goes too far, bordering on the lie, it comes back to bite.

When there is not enough spin, not effective enough to sell the political message, the political goals are undermined. It is too early to say if Treasurer Joe Hockey and the Coalition have their spin right. However, it certainly is not the disaster of their first Budget.

Some commentators have interpreted the spin as an election budget, one suggesting that “if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck” then that’s what it is, an election Budget.

There certainly are large numbers of features that would lead people to this way of thinking and the Budget does leave the option open for Prime Minister Tony Abbott to call an election if the polling improves.

However, it seems to me that while the duck analogy works – it is a Muscovy rather than a Mallard.

All the hallmarks of an election Budget are there. However, they’re much more about voter proofing for an internal election. Protecting Abbott and Hockey from their own backbench and from voter backlash is more important at the moment than getting ready for a general election.

The spin has been all about “families and fairness”. Compared to the first Budget it is more about families and

The spin of the first election was about financial doom and gloom, when the Coalition would have us believe that the Australian deficit would take years to repair, we were on a downward spiral with our country in dire financial straits and only drastic action across government and community could bring about improvement.

The spin was a disaster. It was sold to the same formula as “stop the boats, end the carbon tax and abolish the mining tax”. The trouble last year was that the latter two (and other) tax breaks were for large companies, while the ordinary Australian family was being asked to shoulder the burden, to be the “lifters”.

Attacks on welfare were not measured and targeted. Almost anyone on welfare was feeling vulnerable in the previous Budget. This year the measures are much more moderate and targeted.

This way the

ideology of small government and hard work can still be the foundation for the conservatives without offending middle Australia.

However, the cuts will happen. The detail of the Budget is where the angst lies. Just one example from health is that half a billion dollars will come out of the 16 “Health Flexible Funds”. These funds support the provision of essential services in rural, regional and remote Australia. They are used for funding services such as Close the Gap in health outcomes for indigenous Australians, on-the-ground mental health services, managing vital responses to communicable diseases and delivering substance-use treatment services around the country.

Another example of failed spin that attacks families and fairness is the changes to paid parental leave – especially as they impact on public servants. The “doubledipping” comment of the Prime Minister

simply does not stand up to scrutiny.

Removing access to the Government scheme according to one commentary “imposes an unexpected and unwarranted financial burden on hard-working families and denies employees access to freely negotiated conditions of employment. Such entitlements are not extraordinarily generous, but do contribute to allowing more time for breastfeeding, bonding, and child development”.

The disastrous image of the first Coalition Budget was so beautifully summed up by the smug comfort of the cigar-smoking Treasurer and his Minister for Finance.

This Budget is unlikely to fall as far into the abyss – but, despite the spin, it is certainly not a Budget “for families” and it is certainly not a Budget that is “fair”.

IN his column (“Into Dog Racing’s Grey Area”, CN April 30), Mark Parton starts off by writing that I have no information regarding live baiting in the ACT. I would like to clarify this statement and draw attention to what he writes later in the article, which is correct, that we did not have enough evidence to pursue a prosecution. The fact is that we do have information and, no, I cannot discuss it right now because it may be useful in a future case.

In criminal matters we must establish that the incident was committed by a particular person. Often that evidence is based on an eyewitness testimony since seeing the aftermath of a crime is not enough. Unfortunately, it will be difficult for us to collect harder evidence while live baiting is still in the news, unless a brave insider decides to work with us.

Maybe all this bad publicity has persuaded the few bad apples to change their ways.

However, I’m not convinced while there’s gambling money involved. As a result, one day we will be able to publicly show naysayers what we, at RSPCA ACT, already know about this ugly sport. It’s just a matter of time.

John Griffiths AND so the Australian body politic has come to a point of complete cognitive dissonance.

In the wake of the 2015 Commonwealth Budget it seems the political class is completely unable to communicate meaningfully with the public, a state of affairs which bodes ill for democracy.

Bill Shorten’s weird performance with Neil Mitchell on Melbourne’s Radio 3AW recently could almost be worth a column of its own.

Thirteen times Mitchell asked if Labor had left a legacy of Government debt. (It is of course a matter of public record that it did.)

Thirteen times Shorten proceeded to answer questions other than the one he had been asked.

He was willing to come across as a complete goose to Mitchell’s relatively small audience because he was thinking about how the sound bite could play to much larger audiences.

Having a grown-up discussion and informing the audience available about one’s policy positions is now, it seems, a distant second to how the quotes will line up on social media.

The Government, on the other hand, has been simply breathtaking in its cartwheeling succession of backflips.

The same people, who for years lamented Labor’s Budget deficits, now appear to be utterly untroubled by ballooning debt.

This is particularly galling when one considers that just this time last year we were told, and expected to take seriously, that young people needed to deny access to welfare, and the elderly access to doctors, due to the absolute urgency of the need to balance the books.

Remember this line from Tony Abbott: “...for our children’s sake we have to address this issue of intergenerational theft which the former government was engaged in”?

It was extremely difficult to believe them last year that the “Budget emergency” really justified stinging cuts when they’d just done away with the carbon and mining taxes, but now it’s almost impossible to believe anything they say at all.

In George Orwell’s “newspeak” it would be called “blackwhite”: “Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts.

“Applied to a party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary.

“This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in newspeak as ‘doublethink’.

When sitting down and talking to politicians off the record it’s generally a pleasant surprise that they’re across the subject and invested in the detail.

Which makes it all the more jarring when they slip into doublethink when the cameras are rolling and start saying palpably untrue and manifestly foolish things, all because wisdom and truth are not bedfellows with their political agenda.

Perhaps thankfully the Abbott Government appears to have shelved most of its student politics agendas in favour of one driving imperative: re-election.

Barring some sort of external shock, such as a major global financial crisis or a war with China, one can confidently predict the economy will be singing along all the way to election day mid next year.

The question is going to be what it’s going to cost in the long run, and who we can believe to tell us about it.

Social event of the week / Gender Equality and Faith fundraiser IN Budget week, where one side of town was taking itself very seriously telling us to “have a go” and the other indulging in the fun and frivolity of a four-day fashion fest, a serious and unresolved aspect of the Roman Catholic Church and its failure on women’s ordination and equality was being discussed.

It was a fundraiser at the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, Barton, to send two women from developing countries to the Gender, Gospel & Global Justice conference in Philadelphia in September.

The panel was of three articulate and intelligent women, Kristina Keneally, Hilary Charlesworth and Marilyn Hatton with Paul Collins as the moderator and the free-flowing sharing of ideas, frustrations and failures in so many areas of gender equality, human rights and what to do.

Well, it would seem Pope Francis could, with the stroke of a pen (or a quill perhaps), change the status quo and breathe life into the misogynist, sexist and patriarchal church, bringing it kicking and screaming into this century.

Will it happen? Unlikely but good people will continue to work for change. Now, that’s really having a go.

All Saints Anglican Church was originally built as a railway station for the Rookwood cemetery in NSW until it was transported to Canberra in the 1950s and converted into a church.

With its Victorian, gothic architecture, Lynda says that the church is a “curious blend of the old and the modern, beautifully and sensitively restored with a long aisle and beautiful windows.

“Some people say that church weddings aren’t as popular but people love a church wedding if it is done well,” she says.

St Paul’s Anglican Church FOR traditional weddings, St Paul’s Anglican Church in Manuka is perfect, says the rector Brian Douglas.

“It’s ideal for a more traditional wedding, with a red carpet for the bride and bridesmaids to walk down, and the church has a lovely light to it, a pleasant atmosphere,” he says.

The large, prominent church is surrounded by beautiful gardens that Brian says can be used for photos or even for a reception if the weather is right. The church also has scenic locations nearby including Weston Park, Telopea Park and the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

“We attempt to meet people’s needs wherever we can, within the guidelines we have to follow,” he says.

“For example, we have to use the

Anglican Prayer Book in the service, but we allow photography or movies to be taken in the church.”

DIRECTOR John Sheedy is the brains behind the upcoming production of “Storm Boy”.

“Pelicans are very naughty,” he says, as we talk about the 1964 children’s novel by Colin Thiele, which was adapted into a 1976 film and seen by just about every Australian school child of the day, including Sheedy.

We’ll see his version, adapted for the stage by playwright Tom Holloway, in early June at The Playhouse.

We agree that the movie’s a tearjerker – “beautiful and melancholy”, as Sheedy puts it.

Set in the remote Coorong National Park of SA, it tells of an isolated child Mike, the “storm boy” of the title, who lives with his reclusive father, Hideaway Tom. Through nurturing three orphaned pelican chicks and bonding closely with one, Mr Percival, and with the guidance of an exiled Aboriginal man, Fingerbone Bill, he learns about the land and its creatures and grows up.

Sheedy tells “CityNews” how he had long nurtured a “lingering wish” to do a stage version of Thiele’s work.

“I just loved that book and we watched the film at school… it had a sense of isolation and showed men dealing with grief. As well, the friendship of the boy and the pelican was unique… I got why it is an Australian classic; we all know these people”.

Besides, the Southern Ocean is where Sheedy grew up, in beachside Torquay, Victoria.

And there’s Mr Percival the pelican, “one of Australia’s most famous characters,” Sheedy says.

“He’s the only pelican who comes back after he’s released… I loved that about him.”

Holloway, he emphasises, adapted the stage version from the novel, not from the film. There are no dune buggies hooning around, and he really honours Colin Thiele.

Luckily, Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett were instantly attracted to the whole idea and became co-producers with the Perth-based Barking Gecko.

script right at the outset and his favourite animal is the pelican – can you believe that?”

Sheedy says, praising a playwright of whose work he has long been a fan. “There’s a lovely, bruised quality to Tom’s writing… he understands undercurrents and he can be very economical with text, he knows when to replace words with action.”

And what action, especially when you’ve got pelican puppets such as Mr Proud, Mr Ponder and Mr Percival designed by Michael Scott Mitchell and two graceful new dancerspuppeteers, Anthony Mayor and Phil Dean Walford, both graduates of NAISDA Dance College. Under the guidance of former Canberra director Peter Wilson, the puppeteers are fully visible. With no black Lycra tights to hide them away, they achieve “a kind of a dreamtime story quality”, Sheedy believes.

“These life-size pelican puppets do all things pelicans do; they waddle, they peck, they flap and they fly. They’re very naughty pelicans.”

Toby’s Herculean, brave new opera IS George Frideric Handel’s 1745 musical drama “Hercules” an opera?

Artistic director of Canberra Choral Society Tobias Cole, the brains behind its coming production of “Hercules”, says it is.

“Handel called it an oratorio to please the punters,” Cole tells “CityNews”.

“It’s narrative-driven, so I’m calling it an opera.”

Besides, the great Handel expert Winton Dean said it was without doubt an opera, so why not?

“We’ll have fabulous visuals, 1970s costumes, great lighting, and drapes at the back, and we’re having three staging rehearsals, which is three more than last year so we can confidently say it’s ‘semi-staged’,” says Cole.

The normally sweet-tempered Cole is in a fighting mood and asks: “Do you not think the capital of Australia deserves an opera company?” While now he’s making do with Pozible crowd-funding, he’d really like artsACT funding for a full week of stage rehearsals in future.

He may be cross, but he’s not an out-of-touch music snob. He and the conductor of “Hercules”, Brett Weymark, have been in London checking out the theatre.

Cole couldn’t resist seeing the choirs at Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s, but he also caught “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” play, “Treasure Island” and “Sweeney Todd”. Theatre tragic Weymark sometimes went to two shows a day.

“Hercules” will be in the Playhouse, where his last Handel works have been staged. Cole believes it’s “a fabulous space” with intimacy for the audience

and clarity of sound without reverb that means the audience actually knows what’s going on.

This Hercules story is based on Sophocles’ “Women of Trachis” and is more about his wife, Dejanira, who goes mad and unintentionally causes his death.

Mezzo-soprano Christina Wilson plays Dejanira, who spends much of the opera lambasting her husband for supposed infidelity and the rest in a frenzy that climaxes in a mad scene to die for.

Greek-style, the title character’s death happens offstage, announced by Cole’s character, Lichas the Herald. But then there’s an exciting re-enactment of the hero’s suffering, sung in recitative to an unusual orchestral backing.

Christopher Richardson, the bass baritone who sang Ptolemy last year in “Alexander Balus”, will sing the not-very heroic Hercules, while Melbourne soprano Janet Todd plays the princess role; up-and-coming Melbourne tenor Jacob Lawrence plays Hyllus, the son of Hercules, all supported by Canberra Choral Society Chorus and Baroque Ensemble. Canberra singer Andrew Fysh provides a quasi-religious happy ending when, as Jupiter, he sends Hercules to the top of Mt Oeta to become a divine protector.

When royal girls just had to have fun “A Royal Night Out” (M) AT midnight GMT on May 8, 1945, peace in Europe was declared after almost six years of World War II. Julian Jarrold’s film purporting to portray that night’s events opened in Australia six days after the 70th anniversary of peace.

The Brits were out on London’s streets with flag waving, dancing, immoderate drinking, men in uniform embracing women they hadn’t met, singing the popular songs that helped sustain British spirits during those awful six years, bands in up-market venues playing jazz classics (great numbers, great performances), boys and girls going in to play grown up games in private. And business as usual in that big house at the far end of the Mall where a middle-aged couple (Rupert Everett and Emily Watson) and their two daughters were going about their customary business.

To this point, this summarises the bare bones of that night’s celebrations. But this review deals with fiction, after mummy and daddy somewhat reluctantly agree that the youngsters might go out and join in the fun. But be home by midnight – “Oh, can’t we stay a little longer?”

Alright, but be home by 1am sharp. And here is a pair of pretty young army subalterns to chaperone you.

The best laid plans of monarch and consort can go agley. Trevor De Silva and Kevin Hood’s screenplay has 19-year-old Elizabeth, aka Lilibet, and Margaret Rose, not quite 15, doing something completely new – going alone among the British people. It’s a compendium of moments that might have happened, ranging from

comic passages, mostly involving Margaret (Bel Powley) and Lieutenants Dum and Dee Tweedle supposed to be chaperoning the girls, to serious interchanges between Elizabeth and a young Bomber Command NCO (Jack Reynor) accused of Lack of Moral Fibre after 50 operations, facing discipline and despatch to a war still raging in Asia and the Pacific.

It’s quite pleasant. Its core plot is not particularly credible. I wonder what the present chatelaine of the big house at the top of the Mall, the only person on the planet who knows what, if anything, really happened that night, might think of it. No force on earth can make her tell.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” (MA) A RECENT article in “The Australian Review” summarised the three “Mad Max” films that 36 years ago propelled Australian filmmaker George Miller to fame as “a highoctane visceral ride into a dystopian future full of fast cars, violence and retribution”. Gee, I wish I’d written that.

The article suggests that the bill for “Fury Road” was of the order of $150 million. Seventeen hundred people were involved in the production, of whom as many as 1000 might have been on location at any one time. Mel Gibson is way too old now to play Max and English actor Tom Hardy takes his place. Once again Hugh Keays-Byrne plays the baddest baddie imaginable. In a land that God, if she exists, has forgotten – or more probably, mankind

Driving the plot of “Fury Road” is Imperator Furiosa, one tough bird missing the outer part of her left arm, rebelling against male domination of humanity’s remains. The film’s dramatic structure involves Furiosa and Max getting their act together and driving the giant War Rig westward to the green place where things might be better, hotly pursued by Immortan Joe’s hoplites mindlessly carrying out his orders even unto death.

For allies, Furiosa and Max have only a quintet of nubile young women wearing only just enough diaphanous cloth to mask the private bits, and Nux (Nicholas Hoult) a deserter from Joe’s force.

In time, the War Rig and its crew will join with a group of ancient motorbike-riding, rifle-toting women led by

the Keeper of the Seeds (Melissa Jaffer) who tells them that the green place is to not the west but the east!

The plot focuses less on human characters than on vehicles. The inventiveness of the technos who designed and built them deserves high praise. The agility of the pursuers is impressive although, apparently, they performed their acrobatics on wires later removed by computer wizards.

The film’s principal character is not Max but Furiosa, a role imposing little burden on Charlize Theron.

In a cinema containing fewer than 20 people at an early-afternoon session on the first day, a couple several decades younger than I walked out about halfway through the screening. I kinda envied them.

review Charm of eclectic ‘Connections’ “MAKING Connections” is an innovative exhibition that comprises modern and contemporary works by well-known South-East Asian artists.

The exhibition draws upon the cultural collections of the university, as well as private works including those of former diplomat Neil Manton.

The show aims to demonstrate the productive and ongoing artistic dialogue between Australia and the region, focusing on the particular efforts of the ANU School of Art and Faculty of Asian Studies.

Archival material supplements a free and informative exhibition catalogue containing contributions by leading academics. Included here is a fascinating account

by Prof Virginia Hooker, who also speaks of some of the familiar works around the campus, including the life-size bronze statue “Saraswati”, a gift from Indonesia in 1969, when the two countries were in the process of rebuilding relations.

Reviewed by Johnny Milner underestimated, but the merits of the art itself are, of course, also worth discussing.

The exhibition showcases a range of artists working in a variety of mediums, including textiles, mixed media, photography, oil and watercolour painting and sculpture. One piece that visually excites is the oil on canvas “Renungan Air 3” (“Reflections on water”) by Malaysian artist and poet, Latiff Mohidin. “Untitled (Flowers)” by the influential Indonesian artist, Affandi, also demonstrates an expressionistic flair.

Some work on display draws on religious themes.

Other pieces are decidedly political.

While ‘Making Connections’ might have benefitted from a more theme-based approach, paradoxically, part of its charm is that of eclecticism.

Simple, fast and soul satisfying PAPPARICH is clear on one thing; its position in the fast-paced, fastgrowing Canberra food industry.

Things are simple here, by design.

The menu, celebrating the wonders of Malaysian food, is massive and each item has a code. At your table is a pad of paper with a form you fill in (pencils provided). You write down your table number, the number of diners (in the correct boxes, of course… I had to start again being a bit DUH with forms). Then you decide what to eat and how many servings and what to drink.

You fill in those slots, too. Then you can add comments, which I assume means directions like “not too hot” or “allergic to peanuts” or, perhaps, if you’re so inclined, “have a nice day”.

Next up, you push the buzzer on the cutlery container and a waiter comes to your table. I must have been having a slow day since I missed that bit, so my friend and I sat for some time waiting for attention.

We had no problem deciding what we wanted but recorded them in the wrong order.

Thankfully, our waiter realised that I desperately needed help at that stage and sorted me out.

Now to the food.

The menu is overwhelming and includes more than 110 options – covering all the bases such as satays, snacks, dim sum, fish, noodles, fish dishes (a small selection), vegetarian dishes, specials and

Malaysian favourites.

You can order roti canai (Malaysian flatbread) several ways at PappaRich, indeed 16 ways: on its lonesome, with a curry, with a rendang and even with banana and vanilla ice cream.

We ordered our roti, which was soft and slightly sweet, with several sauces that were as rich in colour as they were in taste. It’s so relaxing sharing food this way. I find roti addicting and PappaRich does it extremely well. If you’re in the right spot you can watch the restaurant’s roti master at work. It’s a true performance.

Next up was Jasmine rice with curry chicken and sambal prawns. The rice was soft and fluffy, the prawns plump and juicy and the curry itself a

delicious combination of spices. The chicken was a bit dry for our liking.

The dishes at PappaRich are on the generous side, so don’t over order in the first instance.

Best to hold back and then add more if you still have room.

Is it the best Malaysian I’ve ever had? No, but it’s quick and soul satisfying. We appreciated the speedy service since we were on our way to the theatre.

PappaRich is a massive place and is always busy. No surprise there.

One bite and you’re hooked!

IT is surprising the number of people who have not tried eating persimmons and yet, those who have immediately love the delicious flavour.

My own experience came late in life when a client gave me some persimmons, assuming that I knew all about them. Arriving home, I placed them in a bowl and for a couple of weeks tried to decide how they should be eaten.

Then I peeled off the tough skin like an apple and found the taste delicious and was hooked. As we have no space in our already crowded garden to plant one, I am always grateful to generous people who have shared their crop with me.

There are two varieties of persimmon, the astringent and the non-astringent. The astringent need to be left until soft and squishy, when one can scoop the soft fruit on to ice cream or mix with yogurt. Do not try eating them before they are really soft or you certainly won’t ever eat one again! The non-astringent can be peeled and eaten as soon as they are ripe with the flesh hard like an apple. I chop them up and put into plastic containers and freeze them. They keep very well, giving several months of fruit on top of my breakfast cereal.

Persimmons are one of the most important fruit trees in China and have been cultivated for several thousand years with more than 240 varieties.

Westerners have been slow to accept it as a true fruit tree even though, as seen in this photo, it grows well in this district.

JUNE 5 is World Environment Day when we all try and assess what we can do to improve the environment.

This year’s theme is “Sustainable Consumption and Production”. The slogan: “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”.

Now is an ideal time to recycle all those falling leaves. Don’t waste this valuable resource.

I was moved this week to see a man in a wheelchair, on the edge of the nature strip, picking up leaves with a lawn rake from the gutter and putting them on his garden. That was the other end of the spectrum of seeing householders raking leaves into gutters resulting in possible blocked storm water drains.

Just how many persimmons will grow on a tree? lady I saw washing leaves off the lawn into the gutter with her garden hose. A terrible waste of water and a waste of a wonderful natural resource for the garden.

EVEN with the smallest space, one can have a garden as I have said many times before.

As we increasingly move into town-house living, with Flemington Road as a perfect example, many of the balconies are ideal for growing veggies in containers, providing they receive plenty of sun. They need not be fancy and polystyrene boxes are perfect. Polythene has great insulation qualities keeping the soil warm to encourage good root growth. Use only the best quality potting mix if you want good results, none of this $3-a-bag supermarket stuff.

• A reminder for the veggie growers, winter crops include broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, snow peas, broad beans such as Yates Early Long Pod and cauliflower.

• Do not mulch your garden in winter; allow the watery winter sun to warm the ground. Start mulching from September.

• Encourage children to plant a tree or even a shrub to celebrate World Environment Day • Look out for Teucrium fruticans “Silver Box”, perfect for small hedges as an alternative to box hedging. Grows to only one metre tall with a 60cm spread. Silver foliage all year with sky-blue flowers in winter.

Right place, right time for Nellie Nellie came in to share the news that her offer to buy a business had been accepted and she’d need my help getting things organised.

“Well, that’s fortunate you’ll be taking over the business after May 13,” I told her.

“It was announced in this month’s Federal Budget that small businesses, that is businesses with a turnover of less than $2 million, can claim the cost of all new assets purchased that cost less than $20,000 each.

“There is no limit on the number of items that you can claim.

The purchase for the business of $200,000 includes $100,000 for plant and equipment. Each item, in that total, costs less than $20,000 so you should be able to claim the whole $100,000 as a tax deduction.

“However, a cautionary word; at this stage the Budget is not yet law, so my advice is predicated on the basis that this part of the Budget will be passed without amendment.”

Nevertheless, Nellie was excited. “When I heard the announcement, I thought I could only claim $20,000 in total,” she said.

I told her it was important to remember that if she bought any items that cost more than $20,000 she would have to depreciate them in the normal way.

Nellie said that the only item she could see costing more than $20,000 was the motor vehicle.

“There were also some changes in the Budget concerning car claims, “ I told her.

“As a sole trader, under the proposed new rules there will be only two methods available to claim motor vehicle expenses from July 1. The first is limiting your claim to 5000 kilometres at the specified rate. The second is keeping a logbook for 13 weeks and then using the calculated percentage to apply against all motor vehicle expenses.”

I also advised that, as a sole trader, there would be a discount on the income tax she paid. “There will be a 5 per cent discount off the income tax payable,” I said.

“This discount will be capped at $1000 for each income year. Should you decide to change to a company at a later stage, the company tax rate is also being lowered to 28.5 per cent from 30 per cent and there is no cap. Also, if you do change to a company structure there will be no capital gains tax liability at that time, which makes it much more attractive for you to consider this option.”

“The other news is that you will be able to get an immediate tax deduction for any expenses incurred in starting this business.

“The expenses included in this category were previously known as ‘black hole’ expenses and include accounting, legal and other advice services incurred in the setup of the new business. You no longer need to write these off over five years.

“So this is all really good news for you starting your business and having all these tax concessions appear at the right time.”

Nellie said: “Thank you so much for letting me know, I am really excited and keen to start.”
