BTEC HND CIVIL ENGINEERING This qualification provides the educational background required for a career in civil and municipal engineering, structural engineering, public health and water engineering or highway engineering.

BTEC HND CONSTRUCTION AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT The HND programme develops your knowledge, understanding, skills and awareness necessary to provide you with the potential to progress to technical, supervisory and managerial positions in Civil Engineering. On the course you will cover building and technology, science and materials, health, safety and welfare, management principles and applications and surveying procedures.

DANNY WINS GOLD IN CARPENTRY COMPETITION

City College Norwich carpentry apprentice Danny Branson, who works for Morgan Sindall, has won the gold medal in the Norfolk and Waveney Building Apprentices Competition – following in the footsteps of his site manager, Ken Bassett, who won the same competition 26 years ago when he too was a City College Norwich apprentice.

Nineteen year old Danny, from Earlham, Norwich, was one of over 50 apprentices in construction trades taking part in the R.E. Carter Building Apprentices Competition held at Great Yarmouth College.

Fourteen apprentices from five local colleges and training providers had just five hours in which to complete a challenging brief in the carpentry and joinery competition, where they had to construct a complex hand cut roof featuring bargeboards and a housed collar.

BRICKLAYING CRAFT DIPLOMA

The seven units cover:

Level: One

Duration: One year

Carry out safe working practices in construction

Contribute to setting out and building basic masonry structures up to DPC.

Course Description: This course is the starting point for vocationally specific bricklaying courses. There are seven units – three common and four tradespecific. The course is for all students starting the bricklaying work-related route. Basic knowledge of bricklaying at Foundation Level will be gained.

The course is approximately 60% to 40% practical and theoretical content with the majority of the time being spent in the workshop area and the rest in study rooms and classrooms. You will need to provide your own overalls, protective footwear and all stationery requirements.

You will need to have basic skills in IT, communications and Maths.

Entry Requirements: Demonstrate commitment, motivation and enthusiasm to succeed on the course.

The programme gives you the chance to explore the opportunities offered in the construction sector and to acquire appropriate vocational skills. The course is made up of different units, which include: l

PLUMBING PRE-APPRENTICESHIP

Level: One Duration: One year (with possible progression to work-experience year) Course Description: This course is ideal if you want to take the first steps towards becoming a qualified plumber. It will give you the basic knowledge and skills relating to plumbing.

Entry Requirements: Three GCSEs grades A*-D in English, Maths and Science. You will also be asked to attend an advisory interview.

Progression: An Apprenticeship with an employer and further study.

The course explores hot and cold water systems, pipes and gutters, plus how to install pipe systems, use materials and fit components. It also includes an introduction to the construction industry and the range of operations involved within it.

Alongside the plumbing course, you will also study English, Maths and ICT. The course will prepare you for employment, and once you are in a job within a relevant sector of the plumbing and heating industry you may continue to study part-time.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION PRE-APPRENTICESHIP

Level: One Duration: One year (with possible progression to work-experience year) Course Description: This is an ideal course for school leavers who wish to pursue a career in electrical installation engineering. The qualification covers both practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the following areas: mechanical skills, wiring techniques and installation skills.

Entry Requirements: Three GCSEs grades A*-D in English, Maths and Science.

You will also be asked to attend an advisory interview.

Progression: An Advanced Apprenticeship with an employer.

For example installing lighting, power circuits, technical knowledge, which includes a sound understanding of electrical engineering principles, electrical installations and electronics, in addition to component recognition, operation and testing.

Alongside the electrical installation course, you will also study English, Maths and ICT.

To complete this course you will need to successfully achieve a number of practical assessments and online knowledge assessments.

Your time at college will be divided into 60% classroom delivery and 40% practical workshop activities.

VEHICLE BODY AND PAINT OPERATIONS IMI DIPLOMA Level: One Duration: One year Course Description: This course is ideal for you if you want to prepare yourself for a career in the vehicle body repair industry. The course has an option of either body panel repair or paint application (refinishing). In both areas, students will restore damaged bodywork through the initial stages of repair. Repairs are carried out to industry standard using the large range of equipment found in the College’s impressive body workshop. The course includes elements of Health and Safety, housekeeping and basic body repair techniques. You will be required to complete a set number of practical tasks and pass four online multiple-choice question papers.

Entry Requirements: Demonstrate commitment, motivation and enthusiasm to succeed on the course.

Progression: Vehicle Body and Paint Operations IMI Level two Certificate.

The course has an option of either body panel repair or paint application (refinishing). In both areas, students will restore damaged vehicles or panels back to original shape and finish. Repairs are carried out to industry standard using the large range of equipment found in the College’s impressive body workshop.

The course includes elements of Health and Safety, general housekeeping and industry standard body repair techniques. Practical skills will be tested by a series of tasks within the College workshop.

Theory knowledge will be tested by a series of online multiple-choice question papers which are externally set by the awarding body.

Entry Requirements: Three GCSEs grades A*-D including English, Maths and a Science based subject or a Level one Diploma in a relevant subject and a selection interview.

To complete this course you will need to successfully achieve a number of practical assessments and online knowledge assessments.

Your time at college will be divided into 60% classroom delivery and 40% practical workshop activities.

You will gain the essential knowledge needed by today’s Service Technician.

The units covered are: l

ENGINEERING BTEC LEVEL TWO DIPLOMA Level: Two Duration: One year Course Description: This Level two Diploma is an ideal course for you if you are interested in engineering and you would like to explore your opportunities within this innovation-led industry.

The Diploma will develop your understanding of the engineering world, the different sectors, and how they impact on our lives. You will learn about the key engineering principles in more detail, such as design, materials, electronic systems, maintenance and manufacturing. You will also look at how to develop new ideas and turn innovative engineering design into business success.

Throughout the Diploma you will get lots of practical experience, with the chance to work in teams with your fellow students. You can also complete additional subjects to help you progress into an engineering career.

CONSTRUCTION AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT BTEC LEVEL THREE DIPLOMA Level: Three Duration: One Year (with top-up 2nd Year option) Course Description: The Construction and the Built Environment Diploma is an ideal course for you if you want to develop your construction and built environment skills and explore your opportunities within this wideranging sector.

In the Diploma you will look in more detail at the significance of the built environment and what shapes and influences it.

The Diploma is taught through a lively mix of classroom learning, practical projects, employer involvement and site visits. Working with your fellow students, you will have the chance to develop teamworking skills that will be useful, whatever career you choose.

Level: Three Duration: One Year (with top-up 2nd Year option) Course Description: This is an ideal course for you if you want to develop your engineering skills and explore your opportunities within this innovation-led industry.

It is equivalent to two full A Levels and is an excellent choice if you want a career in Mechanical Engineering and prefer a practical alternative to A Levels.

Entry Requirements: Five GCSEs grades A*-C, including, English, Maths (preferably A*-B) and Science or Engineering Diploma Level two. In addition a pre-entry task must be completed to a high standard.

Progression: Top-up year or Higher Education study here at City College Norwich, or an Advanced Apprenticeship with an employer.

The course is suitable for someone who wants to study engineering at university, or for someone who wants to become a Higher Technician in this sector.

The Diploma will develop your knowledge of the core engineering subjects, as well as giving you the chance to specialise in Mechanical Engineering. You will learn how engineering businesses operate and the factors that affect them and the wider industry.

ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) Level Entry to level one Duration One year Course Description If you would like to improve your English by developing reading, writing, speaking and listening then the ESOL course at City College Norwich is certificated by City & Guilds to help you gain a nationally recognised qualification.

The Skills for Life material will teach you the English to use for; the health service, education, law, public transport, shopping, getting a job, joining the library and many other situations, so you will feel confident about living in the UK. The course will improve your study skills, including IT and numeracy.

Your course includes Citizenship materials so it will help you to apply for British Citizenship with the Home Office.

At the end of the course you will do the City & Guilds examination, which tests all the four skills and you will be able to move on to the next level, if you are successful.

There are four study groups for the ESOL course and your English level will be assessed, then you will be assigned to start with the appropriate group for you: l

Group A – Entry Level one

Group B – Entry Level two and BTEC work skills Entry Level three

l

Group C – Entry Level three and BTEC Certificate Level one

l

Group D – Level one and some GCSEs including – Art, Photography, Maths, Science and General Studies.

Progression The course is designed to help you progress onto Level one and Level two courses at the College. We can advise you of how to progress onto other courses.

Depending on your ability, you can receive support with your English and access ESOL part-time alongside your main course of study at the College.

FLYING START

Get off to a flying start with the course you have applied for at City College Norwich!

You will probably have lots of questions about the course and the College. Our Flying Start programme has been designed to answer all your questions and help you find out what it is really like to study here.

Flying Start is a series of one to three week courses run during July.

As a prospective student, you can come along, experience a bit of college life and try out the particular course you have applied for. You will get a taster of what you could be studying, meet the teaching staff and the other students that have applied for the course – giving you the opportunity to start making new friends early and have lots of fun!

You will also have the opportunity to get to know your way around the campus before September.

Of course, attending Flying Start does not guarantee your place at the College – but, by the time September comes, it could make all the difference, and give you a bit of extra confidence to get the best possible start.

If you are a year 11 pupil in a Norfolk school You should apply on the standard Norfolk form or through the ‘Help You Choose’ Connexions website as advised by your Careers Adviser at school. Your teachers will tell you what to do, and many schools like to add a reference before sending the form to us. If you post your form to us directly, please use the address (see All Other Applicants).

Get your application in early because some of our popular courses fill up quickly! We accept applications up until the course starts, but you can apply from 1st November. We would recommend that you get your application in by 31st January for us to process.

THE COLLEGE YEAR

Once you have been offered a place, you will need to come into the College to enrol in person.

This will be during the last two weeks of August – look out for advice on this in the letters we send you. Between your interview and enrolment you may also be invited to attend our Flying Start programme. You will then be able to meet individual subject teachers and get a ‘feel’ for college life, see some of our facilities and discuss the subjects you intend to study.

A full timetable of our college term dates and holidays will be available from November.

Financial support 16-19 Bursary Scheme If you are studying on a further education course at City College Norwich, you could be eligible for help from a discretionary fund to help those on low incomes with costs such as transport, equipment and study trips.

There is also a 16-19 Bursary Scheme for Vulnerable Young People, worth up to ÂŁ1,200 a year, to be eligible for the bursary you need to be in one of the following groups: l

HOW TO FIND US

We are a few minutes walk from the city centre on Ipswich Road. From the St Stephen’s Street roundabout (near the bus station), follow signs to Ipswich. A few hundred metres south of the roundabout the A11 and A140 divide: take the left fork and the College is about 300 metres further along on the left.

There is limited pay and display parking on campus, but we also offer a subsidised park and ride scheme from the County Council site on Harford Roundabout (near Tesco on the 140/A47 junction).
