“Da sempre la narrazione costituisce un fondamentale strumento attraverso il quale l’uomo assolve a una duplice funzione: si riappropria della propria esperienza e diviene uomo politico inteso come individuo che contribuisce a definire il sentimento comune della società in cui vive e di cui diviene parte integrante. Se oggi rifletto su quello che siamo riusciti a realizzare come Fondazione, riesco a percepire chiaramente il modo in cui la mia vicenda biografica, così profondamente segnata dall’amicizia con Hermann Nitsch, continui ad indirizzare i miei progetti nella logica di un eterno ritorno.

Penso questo perché ritengo che non ci sia alcun fine al quale tendere, se non quello di affermare la vita e spalancare la sensibilità nei confronti del nostro esserci. È questa l’unica categoria che non deve mutare nell’esperienza di ognuno di noi: una modalità esistenziale che le istituzioni culturali hanno il dovere di incoraggiare.

Nel suo intervento conclusivo al volume, Achille Bonito Oliva ribadisce giustamente una preoccupazione, forse oggi valida più che mai, che è stata l’ossessione originaria di Nitsch già a partire dalla fine degli anni cinquanta: come poter risvegliare dall’intorpidimento dei sensi l’individuo immerso in un ambiente mediale anestetizzante. In ESSERE (2010) egli scrive: “L’arte non è qui per l’osservazione, essa deve mutare la nostra condizione”; ed è coerentemente con questa filosofia che abbiamo voluto restituire in questa pubblicazione il carattere vivo e dinamico del Museo Archivio Laboratorio per le Arti Contemporanee Hermann Nitsch, enfatizzandone soprattutto la dimensione processuale che per me è sempre stato elemento più importante del risultato espositivo finale.

Nel suo approfondimento Lorenzo Mango sostiene ragionevolmente che il lavoro di Nitsch intende quasi “invadere” il tempo quotidiano. Ciò va letto in continuità con la pregnante definizione che lo stesso Mango diede del Museo in occasione della sua inaugurazione nel 2008, ovvero quello di “una casa per le idee”, un luogo di apertura e di incontro che possa riannodare i legami relazionali con i cittadini, le associazioni e le istituzioni, per radicarsi nella quotidianità della città.

Reflecting today on what we have managed to achieve as a Foundation, I can say without hesitation that my personal history, so deeply marked by my friendship with Hermann Nitsch, continues to underpin my projects in a sort of eternal return.

I say this because I believe that there is no goal to strive for other than to celebrate life and open our sensitivity towards our being there. This is the only category that must not change in the existence of each one of us: an existential approach that cultural institutions have a duty to encourage.

In the speech that concludes this volume, Achille Bonito Oliva fittingly reiterates a concern, perhaps today more valid than ever, that has been Nitsch’s prime obsession since the late 1950s: how to awaken an individual immersed in an anaesthetizing medial environment from the numbness of the senses. In ESSERE (2010) he writes: “Art is not here to be observed; it has to change our condition”. And, in line with this philosophy, we have sought to use this volume to demonstrate the lively and dynamic character of the Museo Archivio Laboratorio per le Arti Contemporanee Hermann Nitsch, emphasizing above all the procedural dimension that I have always considered the most important element of the final result of an exhibition.

In his in-depth analysis, Lorenzo Mango reasonably maintains that Nitsch’s work almost seeks to “invade” daily time. This should be interpreting in continuity with the meaningful definition that Mango himself attributed to the Museum when it opened in 2008: that of “a house for ideas”, a place of openness and encounter capable of rebuilding a relationship with the public, associations, and institutions, thus becoming rooted in the daily life of the city.

Noi non vogliamo parlare dei visitatori in modo indifferenziato. Personalmente rilevo un’inadeguatezza delle categorie della museologia contemporanea, ancora così legate a parametri quantitativi, che restituiscono un generale sbilanciamento verso una comunicazione che deve ammiccare ad un pubblico spesso deresponsabilizzato, svilendo in questo modo, oltre alle dimensioni di studio e ricerca, le possibilità di coinvolgimento esperienziale di ogni singolo individuo.

In questo senso posso dire che la formazione, ad oggi, rappresenta la principale missione della Fondazione. Se penso alla prima azione di Nitsch che ho supportato nel mio spazio di via Calabritto nel 1974, quando ero un giovane gallerista, non credo di aver mai avuto così tante vicissitudini in una volta sola come quel giorno, in cui ho dovuto occuparmi di aspetti logistici, burocratici e perfino giudiziari. È in quel giorno che mi sono convinto che forme organizzative oggi di tendenza, o gli stessi modelli proposti in ambito scientifico, non possano in alcun modo sostituirsi alla volontà di fare esperienza, che continuo ancora a considerare l’unica via percorribile per la conoscenza. L’urgenza, oggi molto sentita, di ipotizzare assetti efficienti in grado di limitare al minimo le possibilità di inciampo, credo che corra il rischio di squalificare il valore formativo degli imprevisti e delle emergenze, e atrofizzare contestualmente la volontà individuale di superarli per andare oltre. È a partire da questa convinzione che ho immaginato il Museo Nitsch come un luogo in cui studenti e appassionati potessero immergersi per comprendere la complessità che sottende ogni lavoro che viene proposto al pubblico, vivendo i processi sulla propria pelle, anche attraverso una prossimità fisica con gli artisti, non mediata, cioè, dalla distanza critica della semplice osservazione. È anche in virtù di questo atteggiamento di assenza di mediazione verso il divenire dei processi in cam8

We are reluctant to talk about visitors without making distinctions. Personally, I find today’s museological categories inadequate, still excessively tied to quantitative parameters and creating a general bias towards a form of communication that should appeal to an often deresponsiblized public, thus subtracting not only from the dimensions of study and research but also from the chance of involving every individual on the experiential level.

From this point of view, I can say that training represents the Foundation’s main mission today.

Thinking back to Nitsch’s first action, which I hosted as a young gallery owner in Via Calabritto in 1974, I do not think I have ever had so many things to handle at once as on that day, when I had to deal with logistical, bureaucratic, and even judicial issues. On that day I became convinced that today’s trendy forms of organization, or the models proposed for the sciences, can in no way replace the desire to gain experience, which I still consider the only means of acquiring knowledge.

For me, today’s desperate need to create efficient structures capable of reducing the possibility of tripping up to a minimum, risks cancelling out the formative value of unforeseen events and emergencies, at the same time paralyzing the individual will to overcome them in order to go beyond. It is from this conviction that I imagined the Museo Nitsch as a place where students and enthusiasts could immerse themselves to understand the complexity that underlies every work that is offered to the public, experiencing the processes on their own skin, also through physical proximity with the artists, not mediated, that is, by the critical distance of simple observation.

It is also thanks to this attitude of absence of mediation in relation to the becoming of processes in the field that those who work with the Foundation can now achieve a complete

È precisamente in questo senso che il Museo è anche un archivio: nel desiderio di comprendere le condizioni filosofiche del lavoro di Nitsch, un processo che è stato per me inizialmente tortuoso proprio a causa della difficoltà di reperire materiali di approfondimento; come reazione a questa mia frustrazione originaria, quindi, non solo ho editato le prime traduzioni in italiano dei suoi scritti ma ho voluto, attraverso il Museo, restituire un archivio fruibile e aperto, accessibile a ricercatori, giovani studiosi e curiosi.

experience, moving at will between different kinds of activities: from the preparation of “empty space” during the dismantling and setting-up phases to the production of documentation; from communications management to in-depth analysis of the conceptual categories best able to frame the cultural scope of the neo-avant-garde in order to postulize possible meanings for the future.

This is precisely what makes the Museum an archive too: my desire to understand the philosophical premises of Nitsch’s work, a process that I initially found challenging due to the difficulty of finding reference material. In reaction to this early frustration, therefore, not only did I organize the publication of the first Italian translations of his writings, but I wanted to set up, through the Museum, an accessible and open archive available to researchers, young scholars, and the curious.

Nel quartiere Avvocata, dove un tempo sorgeva l'antico borgo del Limpiano, oggi racchiuso nelle strade che nei loro odonimi conservano memoria dell'insediamento della casata dei Pontecorvo, tra i vicoli stretti che si arrampicano fra palazzi nobiliari, condomini popolari, chiese e monasteri, si staglia la mole bianca del Museo archivio laboratorio per le arti contemporanee Hermann Nitsch, istituito a Napoli dalla Fondazione Morra e inaugurato nel settembre del 2008.

Secondo museo monografico in Europa dedicato a Hermann Nitsch, esponente dell'Azionismo viennese e fondatore del Teatro delle orge e dei misteri (a cui nel 2007 è stato intitolato il Museum della cittadina austriaca di Mistelbach, a pochi chilometri dal castello di Prinzendorf dove l'artista vive e lavora), l'istituzione napoletana è stata ideata da Giuseppe Morra, collezionista, gallerista e direttore della fondazione omonima, e dallo stesso Nitsch, legati da un sodalizio umano e artistico cominciato nel 1974.

In the Avvocata district, where the old village of Limpiano used to lie, now engulfed among streets whose names preserve the memory of the hamlet of the House of Pontecorvo – in the midst of narrow alleyways snaking their way up between noble palazzi, tenement blocks, churches, and monasteries – stands the white mass of the Museo Archivio Laboratorio per le Arti Contemporanee Hermann Nitsch, set up in Naples and opened to the public by the Fondazione Morra in Naples in September 2008.

It is Europe’s second-largest museum dedicated exclusively to the works of Hermann Nitsch, an exponent of Viennese Actionism and founder of the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries (after which the Museum of the Austrian town of Mistelbach, a few kilometres from Prinzendorf Castle where the artist lives and works, was named in 2007).

The Neapolitan institution was the brainchild of Giuseppe Morra, collector, gallery owner, and director of the museum.

As in Mistelbach – where the Hermann Nitsch Museum is housed in an old factory that used to produce agricultural machinery and tools, shut down in the late 1980s – in Naples too, the works of the Austrian artist have also been collected in a disused industrial building, a small power station, the Stazione Bellini, whose history is associated with the figure of its founder, Baron Nicola La Capra Sabelli, and the development of the Neapolitan street-lighting industry.

Following the example of the Duke of Marigliano, who financed the construction of a workshop to illuminate the Sannazzaro Theatre, in 1887 Baron La Capra Sabelli, owner of the Bellini theatre from 1878, set up a number of machines to power the facilities in the caves of the limestone Cavone hill, near the Mercatello, today’s Piazza Dante. he decided to buy part of the garden of the old Pontecorvo Palace, which stood above the caves and the church of Santa Maria dell’Avvocata, to build a power station to produce electricity up the hill, not far from the theatre. Construction work on the plant was probably completed by 1891; in 1895, it consisted of two adjacent buildings divided into six rooms at ground level, including two main central rooms housing boilers and machinery with three upstairs rooms used as offices. There were also some basement areas.

Nel 1897, venuto a mancare il barone La Capra Sabelli, i suoi eredi vendettero la centrale Bellini alla Sgi (Società generale per l'illuminazione) di Napoli, che ne mantenne il nome e la inglobò nelle sottostazioni elettriche del gruppo. Fu evidente da subito che la piccola officina, sorta per fornire energia al solo teatro Bellini, necessitava di ampliamenti e ammodernamenti, così da poter servire senza sovraccarichi il quartiere di riferimento. Se tale impellenza cominciò a essere espressa dai quadri della società fin dal 1912, le operazioni di ristrutturazione presero avvio solo nel 1925 e furono terminate nel 1926.

In 1897, after the death of Baron La Capra Sabelli, his heirs sold the Stazione Bellini to the Naples Sgi (Società generale per l'illuminazione), which retained the name and incorporated it into the group’s electrical substations. It was immediately clear that the small plant, only created to supply the Bellini theatre with electricity, needed to be expanded and modernised if it was to serve the local district without overloading. Although the management began discussing the problem in 1912, restructuring work began only in 1925 and was completed in 1926.

Le modificazioni apportate in quegli anni all'architettura dell'edificio, tuttora visibili nella pianta e nell'alzato del Museo Nitsch, riguardarono l'ingrandimento della sala caldaie, la collocazione di pilastri e travi in ghisa nella sala macchina, su cui fu innalzato un vano superiore coperto da capriate metalliche Polonceau, e il rifacimento della facciata, resa più leggera dall'apertura di quattro finestre e di un portale centrale vetrato, e completata da un coronamento rettilineo.

The changes made to the architecture of the building at that time, still visible in the plan and elevation of the Museo Nitsch, involved enlarging the boiler room and placing cast iron pillars and beams in the machine room, over which an upstairs space with Polonceau metal trusses was added, as well as rebuilding the façade, made lighter thanks to four new windows and a central glazed portal; the work was completed by the addition of a straight cornice.

Dal secondo dopoguerra al 2000, anno in cui la Fondazione Morra rilevò la stazione in comodato d'uso trentennale, è difficile ripercorrere le vicende della ex centrale elettrica di vico Lungo Pontecorvo, giacché sembra scomparire dalla vista della città e dalla contezza degli storici, probabilmente perché abbandonata e rimasta priva di funzioni per diversi decenni.

It is difficult to retrace the vicissitudes of the former electric power station in Vico Lungo Pontecorvo from the late post-war period up to the year 2000, when the Fondazione Morra took possession of the station on free loan for thirty years, as the city and historians alike seem to have forgotten about it, probably because it had been left in a state of disuse and abandonment for several decades.

Al momento dei sopralluoghi effettuati dall'architetto Rosario Boenzi, cui la Fondazione Morra ha affidato il progetto di riqualificazione della struttura e di trasformazione in museo, il passato produttivo della stazione Bellini era testimoniato soltanto dalla presenza di cremagliere e carroponti per la movimentazione del carbone. Nonostante ciò, fu decisione comune di Morra e Boenzi di non intervenire in maniera troppo invasiva sulla preesistenza, poiché l'edificio conservava ancora la suddivisione spaziale e l'architettura degli anni Venti e, nella sua articolazione, lasciava già intravedere la futura strutturazione del museo.

Nello specifico, esso avrebbe dovuto connotarsi non soltanto come contenitore della collezione dei "relitti" delle azioni nitschiane - ricomposti in installazioni che integrano tele, paramenti sacri e portantine impiegate nel corso delle performance, pitture e camici dell'artista, fotografie di documentazione e partiture musicali - realizzate tra la prima esposizione napoletana del 1974 e il 2008, ma anche come laboratorio creativo, centro per la ricerca e la sperimentazione delle arti contemporanee e archivio delle sue molteplici forme di espressione. Tenuto conto della destinazione d'uso stabilita, senza stravolgere l'impianto

During inspections carried out by architect Rosario Boenzi, engaged by the Fondazione Morra to redevelop the facility and transform it into a museum, the only hint of the plant’s industrial past were some tracks and cranes for handling coal.

Nevertheless, Morra and Boenzi agreed not to make drastic changes as the building still preserved its original spaces and the 1920’s architecture, which already suggested an idea for the future layout of the museum.

Specifically, not only was it to become a container for the collection of ‘relics’ from Nitsch’s actions, recomposed as installations bringing together the canvases, religious vestments, and stretchers used during performances along with the artist’s paintings and smocks, documentary photography, and musical scores – between the first Neapolitan exhibition in 1974 and 2008, but it was also to be a creative workshop, a centre for research and experimentation in the contemporary arts, as well as a repository of its many forms of expression. Taking into account its intended use, and without altering the architectural layout or the sequence of the rooms, Boenzi has designed a flexible and versatile 15

structure over an area of less than 3,000 square metres spread across three levels. He has put every room and extension inside and outside the building to use, creating new spaces, such as the split level above the former boiler room, connecting the parts with minimal alterations e.g., through the creation of a grid staircase that joins the split level to the old staircase and restoring, in a spirit of conservative restoration, the metal Polonceau trusses on the upper floor, as well as the cast-iron columns and beams. The architect has thus obtained medium and large all-purpose ‘boxes’; they can accommodate, as required, the various activities organised by the

The museum is divided into departments: the documentation, research and training centre, the book and media library, the independent experimental cinema department, the contemporary music audio library, and the performing and multimedia arts centre, in addition to an apartment for Hermann Nitsch when he is engaged in performances and workshops in Naples.

In linea con le finalità della Fondazione Morra-Istituto di Scienze delle comunicazioni visive, intende produrre, documentare e diffondere l'arte contemporanea, formare alla sua conoscenza, ma anche innescare un processo di rigenerazione e riqualificazione urbana, partendo dalla sua stessa collocazione in uno dei tanti edifici dismessi, inutilizzati e sottoutilizzati del quartiere Avvocata.

Alla domanda sulla scelta della ex stazione Bellini come spazio idoneo per il Museo Nitsch, Morra risponde che, sebbene riconosca i vantaggi allestitivi e le potenzialità espositive che discendono dall'interazione tra arte contemporanea e luoghi del lavoro e ritenga il processo di riappropriazione e risignifìcazione del patrimonio industriale un'evoluzione logica e consequenziale di ciò che, da secoli, si verifica per la rivitalizzazione di residenze storiche o architetture religiose abbandonate, tuttavia, nella scelta insediativa, al di là e ancor prima di tali considerazioni, è stato orientato dagli stessi principi secondo cui, nel 1992, la Fondazione Morra fu insediata nel palazzo dello Spagnolo nel rione Sanità: ossia la volontà di radicarsi nel territorio e agire in un contesto caratterizzato da degrado urbano e marginalità socio-culturale, puntando innanzitutto sulla rifunzionalizzazione di un'emergenza architettonica e poi sulla forza propulsiva delle arti. Il recupero della ex stazione Bellini e la sua riconversione in museo, infatti, sono il primo tassello di una proposta culturale più ampia e ambiziosa, denominata "Avvocata quartiere dell'arte", discussa ed elaborata con studiosi, residenti, associazioni di zona, imprenditori e rappresentanti delle soprintendenze cittadine, e presentata, nel 2009, nell'ambito delle manifestazioni d'interesse per il Grande progetto Centro storico di Napoli, valorizzazione del sito Unesco.

In line with the aims of Fondazione Morra-Istituto di Scienze delle comunicazioni visive, it intends to produce, document, and disseminate contemporary art, making it better known, but also triggering a process of urban regeneration and redevelopment, starting from its very location in one of the many abandoned, unused, and underused buildings in the Avvocata district.

When asked about the choice of the former Bellini station as a suitable space for the Museo Nitsch, Morra replied that although he recognises the expository advantages and exhibition potential brought by the interaction between contemporary art and workplaces, and he considers the process of re-appropriation and re-confirmation of industrial heritage to be a logical and consequential evolution of what has been going on for centuries for the revitalisation of abandoned historical residences or religious architecture, nevertheless, in selecting a location, above and beyond any such considerations, he was guided by the same principles that led the Fondazione Morra to choose the Palazzo dello Spagnolo in the Sanità district, namely the desire to set its roots in the territory and act in an area of urban decay and socio-cultural marginality, focusing first of all on creating a new use for an architectural emergency and later a driving force for the arts. The restoration of the former Bellini station and its conversion into a museum are, in fact, the initial stage of a wider and more ambitious cultural project: ‘Avvocata quartiere dell’arte/the Avvocata art district’, discussed and developed with academics, residents, local associations, entrepreneurs and representatives of the municipal authorities, and presented in 2009 as part of the interest shown in the ‘Great Historical Centre’ project in Naples, with a view to valorising the Unesco site.

L’Arte - per una mia definizione - sta sempre a Sud. Esiste un “a Sud” dell’arte, ed è la condizione da cui parte tutta la cultura contemporanea. Confrontarsi con le negatività della Storia, accettare l’isolamento e la responsabilità individuale, scontrarsi con le emergenze e con la solitudine: questa è la condizione filosofica (nel senso migliore della parola) di tutta l’arte contemporanea, di tutte le avventure che si sono susseguite dal secondo dopoguerra in avanti, nel mondo del sistema dell’arte, e in Italia anche.

Art – according to my definition of the term – is always in the South. There is a “South” of art, which is the condition from which all contemporary culture takes its being. Measuring itself against the negativity of History, accepting individual isolation and responsibility, clashing with emergencies and loneliness: this is the philosophical condition (in the best sense of the word) of all contemporary art, of all the adventures that have ensued since World War II in the world art system, including Italy.

Il Museo Nitsch sta a Sud dell’Arte, conferma questa posizione che non è solo geografica ma anche morale in una città come Napoli, con una Fondazione che passa attraverso Peppe Morra, il suo protagonista, attraverso diverse progressive e mature identità: collezionista, gallerista, poi fondazione. Ed ora la Fondazione ha creato un museo dedicato a Hermann Nitsch, artista pure lui solitario seppur austriaco, uno dei fondatori dell’Aziononismo Viennese, un movimento artistico degli anni fine’50 e ’60, che con estremo coraggio ha affrontato non solo il gusto piccolo borghese della maggioranza silenziosa del suo paese, ma ha bucato anche il perbenismo internazionale di un mondo che cercava dall’arte solo consenso e belle forme.

The Museo Nitsch lies in the South of Art, confirming this position, which is not only geographical but also moral in a city like Naples, with a Foundation which, through Peppe Morra, its leading man, spans diverse progressive and mature identities: collector, gallery owner, then foundation.

And now the Foundation has set up a museum dedicated to Hermann Nitsch, a solitary albeit Austrian artist, one of the founders of Viennese Actionism, an artistic movement of the late 50s and 60s who valiantly took on the petit-bourgeois tastes of the silent majority of his country, also challenging the international respectability of a world that sought only consensus and beautiful forms in art.

Un museo creato con forze private a partire dalla fantasia individuale di un soggetto come Peppe Morra, nato e vissuto a Napoli, che trova in sé le forze economiche e morali per creare un museo in un quartiere particolare, e questo per sviluppare un nuovo gusto collettivo nelle nuove generazioni, nel pubblico in generale, un gusto aperto allo sconfinamento del linguaggio, al passaggio dalla prosa del corpo alla poesia della parola, dalla performance alle proiezioni di film, insomma un museo interdisciplinare multimediale e direi anche transnazionale perché vi passano artisti musicisti letterati di diversi paesi del mondo.

The museum owes its existence to private resources, the first of which was the singular imagination of Peppe Morra, born and living in Naples, who found the economic and moral strength to create a museum in a somewhat ‘unusual’ district, with a view to developing a new collective taste among the younger generations and the public at large; a taste that would be open to the encroachment of language, to a shift from the prose of the body to the poetry of the word, from performance to film screenings. In short, his would be an interdisciplinary multimedia museum, and I would say also a transnational one visited by artists, 25

to recuperato un opificio, un’architettura industriale riconvertita in museo, con una laboriosità fantasiosa napoletana capace di fare della necessità una virtù, con una grande vista affacciata sulla città, e con la possibilità di penetrare nel museo mediante delle strade che partono da Piazza Dante, da Toledo, e salgono su nella parte popolare, dietro al cavone della città. Dunque, anche una penetrazione del contemporaneo, un tentativo di dialogare e bonificare queste zone, un tentativo di portare dentro anche quello che può sembrare una iniziale inerzia, l’indifferenza di una popolazione che però è velocemente convertibile in attenzione. Prova ne sono i risultati: una grande partecipazione di pubblico alle mostre e alle diverse manifestazioni dovuta al fatto sicuro che questo museo copre un bisogno della città, un bisogno di attenzione e di apertura verso quelli che io chiamo i linguaggi dello sconfinamento. È interessante precisare che sul piano morale e politico in questo caso non c’è il solito trend assistenziale per il Sud italiano fatto di prebende, somme, aiuti: il Museo è nato attraverso una propria forza interiore, si è caricato di ogni responsabilità economica e morale e finanche di una positiva progettualità che trova sempre più riscontro nella partecipazione di molti giovani e di un pubblico che trova a mio avviso in questo caso risposte a molte domande che l’arte contemporanea pone.

All this is rooted in a neighbourhood that hosts a renovated factory, an example of industrial architecture converted into a museum, reliant on an all-Neapolitan imaginative industriousness well used to making a virtue of necessity. It has a spectacular view over the city, and it is even possible to enter the museum from the streets leading off from Piazza Dante, from Via Toledo, climbing up through the poorer areas behind the city’s urban quarry. It is therefore a penetration by the contemporary, an attempt to dialogue with and reclaim these areas, a bid to draw in what may initially look like inertia – the indifference of a population that can quickly turn into interest. And all this is confirmed by the results: widespread public involvement in the museum’s exhibitions and its various events because this museum covers a need felt by the city, a need for interest and openness to what I call the languages of trespassing.

We would do well to point out that from the moral and political points of view, this time there is no sign of the usual subsidies for the South of Italy in the form of benefits, funds, or aid. The Museum came into being through its own inner strength, shouldering all its financial and moral obligations and even the affirmative planning increasingly reflected in the major involvement of young people and a public that I feel finds answers to many of the questions posed by contemporary art.

“Veniamo risvegliati dalla morte che avviene innumerevoli volte al nostro essere (esistenza)”. L’allestimento Sinfonia Napoli 2020 è progettato per il risveglio di una sensibilità atrofizzata, nell’anno in cui la sospensione del tempo ha negato il divenire della vita e intorpidito la percezione dell’esserci, dell’essere qui. Il progetto di riallestimento è il risultato della residenza di Hermann Nitsch a Napoli nei giorni che hanno preceduto la riapertura del museo al pubblico: durante la sua permanenza ha realizzato un’azione pittorica di tre giorni (85.malaktion) e diretto la 158.aktion (18 settembre) il cui svolgimento si è accentrato nella monumentale Stiertrage (barella per toro) ospitata nella sala centrale. L’allestimento prende il titolo dalla partitura musicale scritta da Nitsch appositamente per la nuova azione napoletana, come omaggio a Napoli e a Giuseppe Morra.

La produzione che restituisce con maggiore evidenza il senso profondo del riallestimento biennale è costituita dalle dodici tele realizzate nella 85.malaktion (12-14 settembre), esposte nella sala delle colonne. In questi dipinti che celebrano la vita attraverso l’esaltazione delle cromie, viene anzitutto conservata la preoccupazione fondamentale di Nitsch già presente nei suoi più celebri monocromi di rivoli rosso sangue: partendo dalla lezione della psicanalisi, del colore vengono enfatizzate essenzialmente le qualità materiche o sostanziali – pastosità, liquidità, temperatura e umidità – in analogia al rimosso della sessualità repressa e delle secrezioni corporee. Ma per arrivare a questa abbondanza cromatica Nitsch è dovuto passare anche dalla perseverante scomposizione della luce in tonalità, dagli esercizi cromatici, dal gioco teorico di corrispondenze olfattive, tattili, gustative del colore. Queste due ricerche parallele – la prima indifferente al colore, la seconda indifferente alla sostanza – trovano una gioiosa sintesi in questa recente produzione di impasti di luce.

“We are awakened by the death that constantly befalls our being (existence)”. The Sinfonia Napoli 2020 installation is designed to awaken our atrophied sensibilities in a year when the suspension of time has denied the becoming of life and dulled the perception of Dasein, of being here. The planned re-installation is the result of Hermann Nitsch’s stay in Naples ahead of the reopening of the museum to the public. While here, he produced a three-day pictorial action (85.malaktion) and directed the 158.aktion (18th September), centred on the monumental Stiertrage (“bull stretcher”) in the main gallery. The new installation takes its name from Nitsch’s speciallycomposed musical score for the new Neapolitan action in tribute of Naples and Giuseppe Morra.

The work that best conveys the true meaning of the biennial exhibition is the twelve canvases produced during the 85.malaktion (12-14 September), on display in the Sala delle colonne [“hall of columns”]. These paintings, which celebrate life through the glorification of colour, echo Nitsch’s principle concern, already evident in his better-known monochromes featuring bloodred rivulets: taking a leaf from psychoanalysis, he essentially emphasizes the material or substantial qualities of paints – their softness, their fluidity, their temperature and wetness – as an analogy of the removal of repressed sexuality and bodily secretions. But in order to attain this chromatic abundance, Nitsch has also had to observe the endless breakdown of light into tones and chromatic exercises, the theoretical play of the olfactory, tactile, and gustative correspondences of colour. These two parallel quests – the first indifferent to colour, the second indifferent to substance – find a jubilant synthesis in this new production of light mixtures.

The malaktions reveal “the excessive, creative, and furious manifestation of being, and – at the same time – a vegetative calm”, namely the contradictory forces that require standardizing gestures if they are to appear simultaneously: nevertheless, as Nitsch paints he replicates the ritual actions of the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries: gutting, spreading, and pouring. Sinking his fingers into the paste and stretching out his arms, he immortalizes vortices, waves, and vapours on the canvas in precise reference to the closing music of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde (defined by Nitsch himself as “the greatest work of art on the theme of love”).
