La scomparsa
I came here, to Biella, to find a woman who has been missing. She used to work in one of the local textile factories and disappeared one day when the factory shut down as a result of foreign competition, with most of the production lines of many industries moving to China or India for cheaper labour. This was what I knew about her and Biella before coming here.
Sono venuta qui, a Biella, per cercare una donna scomparsa. Lei lavorava in una delle fabbriche tessili locali ed è scomparsa il giorno in cui l’industria chiuse per effetto della competizione straniera a causa della quale gran parte della produzione si spostò in Cina o in India, dove la manodopera è più economica. Questo è tutto ciò che sapevo di lei e di Biella, prima di venire qui.
Once I had arrived in Biella, I looked for her for about 2 months. However, here, they insist that nobody is missing in Biella. People say that although Biella has very high divorce rate, a relatively high suicide rate, and drug abuse problems, there is nobody missing in the city. People also say that although people are generally depressed, there is nobody missing in Biella. A commander with two gold stars on his shoulder kindly explained me that Italian women do not usually go missing, but rather it is East European women or African women, often associated with the sex trade, who disappear. After a month, what I discovered was not my missing woman, but the ‘missingness’ of my missing women. She is absent. She is not from Biella. She is not Italian.
Sono arrivata a Biella. L’ho cercata per circa due mesi. Comunque la gente insiste che non c’è nessuna persona scomparsa a Biella. La gente dice che, sebbene Biella abbia un tasso di divorzi molto elevato, uno relativamente alto di suicidi e problemi di uso di droga, nessuno è scomparso a Biella. La gente dice anche che, sebbene le persone siano in genere depresse, nessuno è scomparso a Biella. Un comandante con due stelle d’oro sulla spalla mi ha spiegato con gentilezza che le donne italiane normalmente non scompaiono, ma sono piuttosto le donne dell’Est Europa o africane, spesso associate al mercato del sesso, a scomparire. Dopo un mese, ciò che ho scoperto è stato che non c’è nessuna donna scomparsa, ma la scomparsa delle mie donne scomparse. Lei non c’è. Lei non è di Biella. Lei non è italiana.
I came here, to Biella, because Jean de Dieu Minani, an artist from Rwanda, could not as he could not get an Italian visa since he could not provide proper documentation to prove he was qualified to enter Italy. Though he was awarded the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary for Artists, the Italian government did not allow him to come to Italy. As a result, his scholarship came to me. I came here, to Biella, and not Minani. In Biella, there is no missing Italian woman, but there is an absent African artist – Minani – and there is a Korean artist – me – who is taking his place, who can stay in Italy for 90 days. I have replaced Minani for 57 days looking for the missing woman in Biella and have 33 more days left until I have to leave Biella. The final presentation of the UNIDEE program will be after 42 days. I am missing 9 days.
Io sono venuta qui, a Biella, perché Jean de Dieu Minani, un artista del Ruanda, non è potuto venire. Lui non ha ottenuto il visto italiano perché non poteva fornire la documentazione corretta per verificare che la sua situazione economica era sufficientemente buona per entrare in Italia. Nonostante avesse vinto il premio UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary for Artists, il governo italiano non gli ha permesso di venire in Italia. Di conseguenza, la sua borsa di studio è stata data a me. Sono stata io a venire qui, a Biella, e non Minani. A pack of Korean instant noodles Several pieces of dried fish 1/4 tablespoon of chopped garlic 1/4 sliced onion 1/2 salad spring onion 1 egg 1 spoonful of milk

1. P our 500cc of water into a saucepan and add the dried fish. 2. Start to boil the dried fish in the water over a strong heat. 3. W hen the water comes to the boil, lower the heat to a simmer and remove dried fish. 4. P ut the soup powder and flakes from the pack of instant noodles into the water (they are separately packaged). Then add 1/4 tablespoon of chopped garlic. 5. Add the sliced onions and the noodles from the packet. Be careful not to split the noodles into smaller pieces when you put them into the water. 6. After 10 seconds of cooking the noodles, crack an egg directly into the pan (without stirring it), trying not to break the yolk. 7. Boil the contents of the pan, with a lid on, for 30 seconds. 8. After the 30 seconds, add 1/2 a chopped spring onion and turn off the heat, but keep the lid on the pot for 3 minutes to cook it. 9. After 3 minutes, the dish is ready. If you want to make it milder, add a spoonful of milk.

Un pacco di tagliatelle espresse coreane Parecchi pezzi di pesce essiccato 1/4 cucchiaio di aglio spezzettato 1/4 una cipolla affettata 1/2 cipollotto 1 uovo 1 cucchiaio di latte
istruzioni:
1. V ersare 500cl d’acqua in una pentola e aggiungere il pesce essiccato. 2. Far bollire il pesce nell’acqua ad alta temperatura. 3. Q uando l’acqua inizia a bollire, ridurre la temperatura per far bollire più a lungo e togliere i pezzi di pesce. 4. M ettere la minestra in polvere e i fiocchi del pacco di tagliatelle espresse nell’acqua (sono impacchettati separatamente). Poi aggiungere 1/4 di cucchiaio da tavola di aglio spezzettato. 5. Aggiungere la cipolla affettata e le tagliatelle del pacco. Fare attenzione che non si rompano in pezzi più piccoli quando vengono messi in acqua. 6. Dopo 10 secondi di cottura, rompere un uovo direttamente nella pentola senza sbatterlo, cercando di non rompere il tuorlo. 7. F ar bollire il contenuto della pentola, coperta, per 30 secondi. 8. Dopo 30 secondi, aggiungere 1/2 cipollotto e spegnere il fuoco, ma tenere il coperchio sulla pentola per 3 minuti. 9. Dopo 3 minuti, il piatto è pronto. Se si vuole renderlo più dolce, aggiungere il latte.
