“I deal with various forms of discrimination and violence that occur unreasonably in modern society, as well as human desires and emotions suppressed by these forces. My intention is not to promote good or punish evil, but to sublimate these experiences by capturing and expressing the emotions suppressed in interpersonal relationships. I believe that a peaceful mind can be achieved by consciously expressing the ferce feelings hidden within superfcial forms and language. Thus, for me, creating art is a meditative act of emptying the mind, which in turn allows my work to capture the intricate network of karma within the complex relationships of society.”

From South Korea, Kyunghee Lee is a distinguished artist whose creative journey began at Ewha Womans University, where she honed her skills in wood engraving and contemporary painting. With an impressive portfolio that includes 17 solo exhibitions and numerous group showcases, Lee’s art has traversed the globe. Her work has captivated audiences from the bustling streets of South Korea to the cosmopolitan hubs of New York and Paris, reaching as far as Mexico, Russia, and Portugal. Lee’s distinct style blends tradition with innovation, ofering a unique perspective on the human condition. Through her art, she bridges continents, inviting viewers into a world where borders blur and emotions resonate universally.

This is quite simply where my portraiture began. They were so humble and polite, surprised I had taken the time. What better way for me to get direct feedback and observe my portraits live, even if it meant years after the portrait itself.”

They modify themselves, transforming from generation to generation in historical becoming, always weaving new projects in other places and times towards new horizons. “For me, art is not only an expression of an artist’s soul, but also a language that must gauge the temperature of past and present society, revealing moods and concrete events that have already occurred or are ongoing. From here, through study and research, various types of artistic languages are born, allowing the artist to highlight historical and current events, in order to bring them to light so they are not forgotten and to prevent their repetition when they represent clear errors.”

“I’ve found three statements made by other artists that resonate with my approach to photography: The frst is from Dylan Thomas, who said art is about telling the truth. The second is from Georgia O’Keefe, who said what appeals to us about mountains and rocks and trees is not that they’re mountains and rocks and trees, but rather the lines, planes, and textures they present to us. Infuenced by post-impressionism with a cubist approach to composition, Atom Hovhanesyan’s goal here is to utilize the whole surface of the support, challenging the viewer’s perception of negative space. Essentially divisionism, the fgure/composition is woven into the fabric of the plane, and space warps into the fgure. In the painting process, repetitive, almost automatic application of crosshatched lines allows the subconscious the opportunity to direct the composition.

“In 1996, I grew weary of my lucrative painting career. Feeling a need to adapt to the new century, I taught myself to use a computer, which has enabled me to create far more art. Additionally, I employ a dialectical process I’ve named “Psychological Realism.” Through this approach, I deliver sometimes absurd, humorous critiques of the art world or satirical commentaries on political correctness in today’s society. You can view my series “A DAY AT THE MUSEUM” this May in NYC...if it’s not censored.”

“I begin my paintings with an A-ha! moment, which can surface anytime, even in the middle of the night. But that is only the beginning. Using a palette knife, I start by layering paint until the painting has its own life. But I am not in control of the painting. It leads me. I have learned to trust in that inspired world of magical creativity as it leads me by the hand to its destination.

“Stimulate perception and depict human depth through fragmented images. My approach is based on the fragmentation of portraits, expressing emotions, intimacy, and human complexity, while directly engaging the viewer’s perception. The fragmentation of faces, the verticality, and the partial repetition of certain portions of the same character create a puzzle to be deciphered in cognitive terms and allow the expression of hidden emotions of the human being.”

“In my landscape paintings, I aim to depict the beauty that surrounds us, even in a landscape heavily infuenced by human activity, like the Danish countryside. Nature and its forces are greater than humanity. When nature displays its power, we humans become insignifcant and powerless. Experiencing this humility is important because it reminds us that we cannot always control nature. It’s an illusion to believe we can. Ultimately, nature will prevail.”

“This is a new series of paintings inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. The essence of inspiration, however, is a palpable relativism at the moment when we ask ourselves whether the reality we are stuck in is already slipping out of our hands, prompting us to embark on a journey into a world that, generally speaking, feels alien to us. We do not control this world. The reality I am contemplating is an evident crisis of a civilization teetering on the brink. Perhaps we stand on the edge of the Old and New Worlds? The darkness deepens. More and more questions arise.”

Drawing from historical and cultural imagery, I create a map of identity that intermingles Eastern and Western ideals of beauty, as well as mythologies. “For me, painting is an exploration of boundaries. It’s a process of dissolving boundaries, both on an individual and social level. The original idea is merely a starting point; it dissolves, blurs, or becomes obsolete. It’s a journey from one state to another, without a fxed destination—just fow, freedom, and expression.
