THAN NGUYEN b.1948, Ninh Binh, Vietnam Lives in Saigon, Vietnam

“The most impactful event in life is the death of loved ones. Instead of filling my days with remorse, I commit my spirit in building a series of monuments in memory of my late wife. The cross on top of the gate represents the religion where she placed her faith. I shaped the clouds on top of the other monument, to remind me that she now is where she belongs, at peace and in the hands of God. The church bell echoes in my ears. The image of her back, dressed in our traditional Ao Dai leaving for mass is vividly come into view. That’s the most nostalgic memory of my beautiful woman and it will stay with me for the rest of my days on this Earth.” Than Nguyen was born in 1948 in Kim Son, Ninh Binh province, Viet Nam. He is now living in Saigon and has shown his art around the globe: Hong Kong, Germany, Singapore, USA, China, Australia, Italy, England, Switzerland, Japan, France, Austria, Belgium and more. Nguyen’s work is about past and present and nostalgia. He stylizes lines to their simplest and places everything on the same surface. The depicted piece is one of the artworks in an installation collection title “Memory of the women who passed by my life”, installed on the hill of Nguyen Than’s homestead in Dalat, Vietnam.
