Indigenous cricket under lights Northern Maori cricketers on tour to play good cricket and acknowledge tupuna The nOrThern Maori cricket side had their irst taste of Cook islands cricket last night when they faced the edgewater resort and spa women’s national team in an exhibition match at the BCi stadium. The touring team is here to take part in the inaugural AerO World indigenous series against the AerO Cook islands men’s team. The series starts with double header Twenty20 matches under lights at the BCi stadium tonight at 6pm and 9pm. The touring team were oficially welcomed on Monday by the local cricketing family and cricket sponsors where the focus of discussion was the need to grow cricket among talented indigenous people. The plan is to expand the A e r O Wo r l d i n d i g e n o u s series to include teams from across major cities in new Zealand, Australia and even further aield. northern District cricket

operation manager Pat Malcon says the aim of the series is to promote and grow indigenous cricket amongst the Maori people in new Zealand and of course their Polynesian cousins. northern Maori cricketer Kolynn Tai says they have been amazed at the beauty of rarotonga and humbled by the hospitality they received since arriving on the island at the weekend. The team even took time out to perform a haka at Avana passage – the site of the great migration of people from the Cook islands to new Zealand. “We are here for good cricket and to make that connection between Maori and the people of the Cook islands and acknowledge our Tupuna,” says Tai. The visiting northern cricket team are keen to play good cricket and make cultural connections between new Zealand Maori and the Cook islands. The team played an exhibition match against the women’s national team last night and will play two games against the national men’s team tonight at the BCi stadium. 13092325

Basketball bragging rights up for grabs The AnZ women’s and highTide men’s basketball competition continues tonight at the TsA in an effort to sort the top teams for the league premiership. With the second round in full swing, teams are anxious to stake a claim for the semis and finals and ultimately the bragging rights of being the top teams in the country’s elite national basketball competition. Last week’s results saw some predictable outcomes but with some high scoring efforts.

Dale Wells from Team hotdogs put in a solid effort collecting 19 points against a new and improving Moana sands team with team hotdogs winning 65-18. hotdogs have a handful of big game players but are also well supported off the bench with some good potential basket scorers and look to be one of the teams to watch this season. Parry all fired up! TereOrA College teacher Bryn Parry almost took out his irst ever round raro road race on saturday but was pipped by Kiwi runner Tony Broadhead. Parry led most of the way in the 31km race before a duel and lead change with Broadhead on the homeward leg of the race around the super Brown area in Tupapa. Parry dug deep to take back the lead but lost it again as he struggled with dehydration in the inal few kilometres of the race. Despite losing the lead and eventually placing 3rd overall with a time of 2.06.35 – Parry showed great sportsmanship as he crossed the line iring his inger pistols and even pulling off a few dance moves. The national college teacher settled for first local male home across the line.

Dashing for school pride at Prince of Wales comp hUnDreDs of future track running

stars will take over the BCi stadium tomorrow (Wednesday 25) for the annual Prince of Wales athletics competition. This year the annual athletics event for rarotonga primary schools, the biggest athletics event on the annual sports calendar, will be hosted by the smallest school on the island – Apii rutaki. This year the full on day of racing will start at 8am with an opening pure. The day’s races begins with a show of discipline in the marching parade before budding athletes take to the synthetic and grass tracks for a day of running in the sun. Parents, caregivers and the general public are invited to the stadium to cheer on the kids. Avarua Primary school will defend the Prince of Wales shield and will be up against track arch rivals Avatea school who missed out on making it three in a row last year when Avarua kids proved too fast. however the smaller schools like rutaki, Takitumu and Arorangi are never to be underestimated as these schools along with others have produced some of the islands fastest men and women. - Matariki Wilson
