CINCINNATI'S LITTLE KNOWN HISTORY FACT

DID YOU KNOW?

THEMANSEHOTEL:ABEACONOFHOPEIN SEGREGATEDCINCINNATI

During the era of Jim Crow laws, Cincinnati's African American travelers found refuge at the Manse Hotel, a fully integrated establishment in Walnut Hills, in stark contrast to the city's otherwise segregated accommodations. Owned by Horace Sudduth, a wealthy Black realtor, since 1931, the Manse Hotel was celebrated for its inclusivity and listed in The Negro Motorist Green Book as a safe place for Black individuals to stay, contributing significantly to the Civil Rights Movement

The hotel, having hosted the 1946 NAACP National Convention, was a vital community hub, later memorialized by an Ohio Historical Marker to acknowledge its pivotal role in local Black history. Despite its decline post the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the property now serves low-income seniors, continuing its legacy of community service.

Hamilton County Launches $5.3 Million

Lead Safe Ohio Program

Hamilton County, in a significant step towards public health and safety, has unveiled a new $5.3 million initiative named Lead Safe Hamilton County, a collaborative effort powered by LISC Greater Cincinnati. This groundbreaking program aims to provide essential lead-safe repairs for homes constructed before 1978, catering to the needs of Hamilton County and City of Cincinnati residents

Lead Safe Hamilton County emerges as a beacon of hope for homeowners battling the hidden dangers of lead exposure. With these grants, we aren’t just renovating homes; we are investing in a healthy community that ensures every family can live in a safe environment, remarked Commission President Alicia Reece, underscoring the program’s commitment to fostering a secure living space for all

Commissioner Denise Driehaus highlighted the program's role in proactive health safety, stating, Safety starts in the home. With Lead Safe Hamilton County grants, we're empowering homeowners to take steps towards a lead-free future for their families.

Echoing this sentiment, Commissioner Stephanie Summerow Dumas addressed the program's long-term benefits: This program offers a solution to what could be a lifetime of complications due to lead exposure, emphasizing its substantial positive impact on community health.

The Lead Safe Ohio initiative, deploying a $95 million fund across 88 counties, has earmarked $5 3 million for Hamilton County, which has chosen LISC Greater Cincinnati to manage the program. Kristen Baker, Executive Director of LISC Greater Cincinnati, detailed the initiative's role in mitigating lead hazards at no cost to eligible homeowners, highlighting a significant investment in the longevity and safety of local residences

Eligibility for the Lead Safe Hamilton County program spans homeowners in Hamilton County with homes built prior to 1978, with a special focus on households at or below 80% of the Area Median Income. However, those above this threshold may also qualify under certain conditions The program's inclusive approach does not necessitate a child’s presence in the home, broadening its reach to more households in need of lead-safe renovations

In an effort to streamline the implementation process, LISC Greater Cincinnati will partner with Working in Neighborhoods (WIN) and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati. WIN will assist in determining homeowner eligibility, while Habitat will oversee the repair work, ensuring adherence to lead-safe practices

The health implications of lead exposure, often stemming from deteriorating lead-based paint in older homes, underscore the critical nature of this initiative The Hamilton County Health Department estimates that over 80 percent of U.S. homes built before 1978 contain lead-based paint, positioning Lead Safe Hamilton County as an essential program for preventing lead poisoning and safeguarding public health.

Homeowners seeking more information on eligibility and program benefits are encouraged to contact WIN at (513) 5140819 or visit leadsafehamiltoncounty.org and 513relief.org.

Tensions are high in Cincinnati after a disturbing incident involving police officers and a local man, allegedly suffering from mental illness, escalated into a troubling display of force. Caught on video, the incident quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread condemnation and sparking a debate about police training, mental health awareness, and community safety.

The footage reveals a harrowing encounter where Cincinnati Police officers were seen attempting to detain a man whose behavior suggested he might be experiencing a mental health crisis. According to eyewitness accounts and the video documentation, the situation rapidly deteriorated. Officers are observed using tasers repeatedly on the man, in addition to deploying pepper spray. As the confrontation grew more intense, the crowd of onlookers became audibly distressed One woman, attempting to intervene, is heard shouting about the man's mental health condition, seemingly in an effort to halt the officers' aggressive tactics.

What has particularly shocked many is the moment captured in the video when an officer draws a firearm on an unarmed bystander who was filming the incident This action has raised serious questions about the appropriateness of the police response and the measures taken during attempts to de-escalate situations involving vulnerable community members.

Addressing the Concerns

The question remains: Was the police officer simply doing their job, or did the situation warrant a different approach, especially in the context of dealing with individuals suffering from mental health issues?

Experts and activists argue that police forces nationwide must adopt more comprehensive training focusing on deescalation techniques and recognizing signs of mental illness. The goal should be to ensure officers are equipped to differentiate between a genuine threat and someone in dire need of medical assistance, thereby minimizing the risk of tragic outcomes.

Community Response and Action

This incident has galvanized the Cincinnati community, particularly among its Black residents, prompting calls for systemic changes to policing and mental health support systems

Advocates are urging for establishing crisis intervention teams that pair officers with mental health professionals to handle similar situations more sensitively in the future

The black community, while navigating the complexities of systemic racism and advocating for justice and equitable treatment, also faces the challenge of confronting mental health stigmas internally. It is essential to foster an environment where seeking help and supporting one another, especially those battling mental illness, becomes a shared priority.

The path forward demands a concerted effort from law enforcement agencies, mental health professionals, community leaders, and citizens alike. It involves not only revisiting police training protocols and policies but also significantly enhancing mental health resources and support networks within the community

As Cincinnati grapples with the aftermath of this troubling incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for dialogue, reform, and unity in addressing the intertwined issues of policing, mental health, and racial injustice Only through collective action can the community hope to protect its most vulnerable members and ensure tragedies like this are not repeated.

In the spirit of Father's Day, a time when we honor and celebrate the monumental role fathers play in our lives, it's paramount to spotlight an often-overlooked facet of paternal well-being - mental health For Black fathers, the stakes are uniquely high, making the conversation around mental health not just necessary but urgent

Recent statistics illuminate a concerning landscape regarding mental health among Black men. According to the American Psychiatric Association, only one-third of Black Americans who need mental health care receive it, with Black men being significantly underrepresented in mental health utilization statistics. The reasons for this disparity are multifaceted, ranging from stigma and distrust of the healthcare system to a lack of culturally competent providers. This gap in care underscores the critical need for targeted support and resources.

Prioritizing self-care is a foundational step in addressing mental health concerns. For Black fathers, self-care transcends mere indulgence; it's a vital act of resistance against the disproportionate stressors they face daily

Systemic injustices, racial discrimination, and socioeconomic pressures uniquely challenge Black men, impacting their mental and emotional well-being Engaging in self-care practices not only fosters resilience but also models healthy behavior for the next generation, demonstrating to children the importance of self-love and emotional intelligence.

The benefits of seeking mental health therapy are vast and can be transformative. Therapy provides a safe space to process emotions, navigate challenges, and develop coping strategies, contributing significantly to overall well-being. For Black fathers, therapy can also offer a valuable counternarrative to the harmful stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging open dialogue and vulnerability. Moreover, engaging with therapists who understand and respect the complexities of their racial and cultural identities can affirm their experiences and promote healing.

However, the unique challenges Black fathers face necessitate special attention and care Racism, economic disparity, and community violence, among other stressors, exact a heavy toll on their mental health

CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE | ISSUE 11 WWW.CINCYBLACKTRAVEL.COM | 27 CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE

The enduring strength and resilience often expected of Black men can also serve as a double-edged sword, reinforcing harmful stereotypes about masculinity and vulnerability Acknowledging and addressing these challenges head-on is critical in fostering environments where Black fathers can thrive emotionally and mentally.

For Black men seeking assistance with mental health issues, numerous resources are available, though they may not be widely known. Organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offer tailored programs and support for African Americans. Additionally, directories such as Therapy for Black Men and the Association of Black Psychologists provide listings of culturally competent professionals. Social media and digital platforms also host supportive communities where Black fathers can share experiences and find solidarity

As we reflect on the significance of Father's Day, it's essential to extend our support and acknowledgment to the inner lives of Black fathers. Their mental health is deserving of as much attention and care as their physical well-being. Celebrating Black fathers means recognizing their full humanity, acknowledging their challenges, and championing their mental health and healing. On this Father's Day, let's renew our commitment to nurturing environments where Black fathers can seek joy, find support, and thrive for their sake and for the legacy they leave to their children.

To all the Black fathers, your health, happiness, and wholeness matter profoundly. May this Father's Day bring not only a celebration but also a renewed dedication to caring for your mental and emotional well-being. You are seen, valued, and deserving of every support on your journey.

CINCY

So even though I’ve been here since 2016, this will be my very first music week I’ve never been to Cincinnati Music Fest and I am just kind of ready to see all the people that come from all over the country to this event. I actually was talking to a potential client in another state and they mentioned that they were going to come here actually it was fun because they’re from Cincinnati so it’s like a homecoming for them and it’s kind of a celebration for those individuals that are interested in music to see the concerts and to see everybody get together and have a good time and then highlighting a lot of the businesses in the area, the food trucks, the people that make tshirts I mean all is just a great time and just to hear the music and just being excited about such a great event.

What Impact do you wish your Business adds to the community?

My impact it that I will be able to help non-profits sustain and to help them with their foundational work and to help them last we want organizations to last we don’t want them to get to the two-year itch and then it’s like “I don’t want to do this anymore” because it can be hard there are three things that I think that a lot of non-profit directors or individuals that want to start a nonprofit or if you run:

You have to give yourself grace, you have to be persistent, and you have to make sure that you are prepared for all these other things that can happen you know it could be good it could be bad but just make sure that you are prepared for it. So grace, persistence, and preparation are important and I want to help them make the impact to grow in the community and past one or two years and to just make sure that they are doing what they say they are going to do and follow their mission

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?

In the next five years, I plan to be able to expand my business to bring on to be a training opportunity for those students that are looking to learn grant writing, those individuals or students that are interested in event planning to be able to grow and train other individuals as they grow their organizations and to be like a training hub for you know many other smaller nonprofits as well as creating tools for larger nonprofits.

What do we need to know about your business?

We’re Black Owned I guess you can see it but it was just something that started from the heart and I’m actually in a happy place and doing the thing that

BLACK BUSINESS GUIDE

My name is Tephra Fields and the name of my organization is Built To Last Non-Profit Solutions.

What Does Your Business Do?

We help nonprofits maximize their impact through the development of sustainable systems.

Are you from Cincinnati?

So I am originally from the great state, the peach state of Georgia I moved to Cincinnati in December of 2016 and how I got here is I was recruited by another organization and that brought me here and I’ve been here ever since

What Inspired Your Business?

I was inspired to start Built To Last Non-profit Solutions because as a former executive director of several non-profits in Georgia, Northern Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio I felt like I started in a place where I didn’t actually know I just kind of started I’ve been working in non-profit organizations for 20 years and made a jump from a case manager into an executive leadership position and I was thrown in even though I had you know, support around my organization and I had to learn on the job and sometimes when starting a business, start a nonprofit organization, you are learning on the job but if I had somebody that walked with me to guide me, coach me through the process it would have been a little easier for me in the beginning but I am so appreciative for the journey. I actually work with several other or being able to work with other executive directors and other non-profits in my job, I found that we were all dealing with a lot of the same things so even though we wanted to help or we want to help the individuals and our clients the people we serve there’s also that foundational work of the organization that needs to be done and sometimes you don’t understand or even know so as a new person starting a non-profit, you want to start

something because you want to help but at the same time you don’t understand or may not even know that there’s the foundational work that needs to be completed like your incorporation paperwork, building a board of directors how to build a board of directors, the fund development piece, fundraising, the strategic planning, volunteer recruitment, donor recruitment, maintaining your donors, program management, program development there’s so much involved in starting a non-profit, maintaining that non-profit because you want to sustain it, you want to go on for years and I think of when you start your non-profit you think of you want to eradicate something, you want to help something and once you’ve eradicated that thing you transition and you move on to the next You know I always think you want to work yourself out of a job and transition to something else but you have to be able to plan and prepare to transition to the next step Built To Last Non-profit Solutions is an organization that can help the executive director, that board, that staff plan for the next step. So I want to be that person who walks hand in hand with that organization as they make those changes.

What Are Looking Forward To For The Best Week In July?

I love and that’s being able to help nonprofit executive directors because I’ve been where they’ve been I’ve gone through those blood sweat and tears and not knowing what to do next and you know “Who do I partner with” “Where is my next donor going to come from”, I’ve been that lone staff member to do all the work and I want to let you know individuals know that you’re not alone, it’s not just happening to you. There are other nonprofits out there that go through those growing pains it doesn’t matter if you 5 years old as an organization, 10 years old as an organization it is a natural progression you are going to change after you know 2 years, 4 years which is why it has to be important to develop a strategic plan to prep you for those changes that are going to happen because the world is changing around us and I want to be able to grow outside of Cincinnati I want to be able to grow outside of Ohio and to build up those smaller nonprofits so that they can grow as well So if you’re looking for assistance with Built To Last Non-profit Solutions, if you need grant writing, fund development, program development, organizational development, board training, executive director coaching we can be reached by calling us, emailing us, messaging us on our website www.btlns.com Facebook page you can reach by social media at BTLNS Cincy and also you can give us a call at (513)713-0222 and if you would like to send me an email you can reach me directly at tfields@btlns.com

SOULSECRETS

FoodForTheSoul

When it comes to Cincinnati and food there are a number of place you can go for a great mean. But if there was a #1 Go To Soul Food restaurant to visit in Cincy then Soul Secrets is the place. Named #1 for their delicious fried chicken, centered Downtown between Nostalgia and OTR Cinema Soul Secrets has been known to serve some of the best southern-inspired dishes that will leave you wanting more. Cincy Black travel had the opportunity to meet the owner of Soul Secrets and discuss why her restaurant is Cincinnati's newest gem

Q: Tell us more about yourself and what started your business.

Candice: My name is Candice Holloway, owner of Soul Secrets. Soul Secrets started as an opportunity for me to connect with my teenage daughter who was dealing with depression I began baking recipes that my grandmother shared with me to connect with her, it was an opportunity for me to create a safe space for her to open up, as well as teach her recipes that had been passed down by my great-greatgrandmother. Food brings families closer, it’s a way to connect and share

Q: Your logo has a small red bird sitting on the U in your logo. What does that represent?

Candice: It's Red Cardinal Bird and it was important that we got to fit that into the logo. Growing up Red Birds were always symbolic of an Ancestral Spirit.

WWW.CINCYBLACKTRAVEL.COM | 43 CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE BLACK BUSINESS GUIDE

So it was important to me that it was included in the logo especially with the business being built from my grandmother's recipes. Throughout this journey of opening up our storefront, there would always be a red bird around me.

Q: I love the ancestral connection. How important is it for you to incorporate that with your business?

Candice: We were very intentional in using photographs that are on the walls. They include pictures of my great-grandmother, grandmother, and my mom. This was my way of being able to pay homage to them through the business. I remember growing up in church and my grandmother would be cooking for some gathering for the community. Back then she didn't have the opportunity to start her own restaurant so having her included in this way means a lot to me. I am so grateful that she took the time to share these things with me that I can share with our city.

Q: Why was OTR a prime place for you to open your business?

Candice: We started at Findley Market. Being Downtown with all of the revitalization happening here. My father was very big on 2nd chance hiring, so it was my mission to bring my business here. That way we can create jobs for our community and help give others 2nd chances. 500% of my staff lives within walking distance from our establishment. I also love that we are right next to Nostalgia and OTR Cienma is right across the street its an amazing vibe, and I had to be a part of it.

Q: If someone was new to Cincinnati and it was their first time at Soul Secrets what would you suggest they try first?

Candice: Definitely our catfish. We were also voted best Fried Chicken in the Tri-State so try the fried chicken and our mac & cheese is top tier. We also have desserts some of my favorites are our Banana Pudding and pound cake. Our menu is fantastic you won't go wrong with anything you try on our menu.
