Virginia Coffey was a pioneering civil rights activist whose courageous efforts helped desegregate Cincinnati's swimming pools and Coney Island amusement park. A fierce advocate for equality, she, along with fellow activists, took a stand by lying down at the gates of Coney Island, demanding that the park allow African Americans to enter freely. Coffey's relentless fight against the discriminatory practice of separate days for blacks and whites at public pools made a significant impact in the community, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable city Her legacy continues to inspire the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice.

Community Resilience Shines Amid NeoNazi Protest in Historic Lincoln Heights

On February 7, Lincoln Heights, one of the first predominantly Black municipalities in the United States, faced a shocking neo-Nazi demonstration that disrupted the community's peace and safety As armed individuals roamed the neighborhood, tensions boiled over, especially among residents who felt deeply threatened in their historic village, home to families and children near local schools. In the aftermath, Hamilton County officials, including sheriffs and the Evendale Police Department, convened to address community grievances, but concerns around accountability remain. Despite their claims of a peaceful demonstration, the presence of armed protestors in a predominantly Black

area raised serious safety questions. Hamilton County Commissioner Alicia Reece voiced community frustration during a tense meeting with the Evendale mayor, underscoring the lack of action taken against the demonstrators Local residents are organizing protests and boycotts as a means of asserting their rights and safety in the face of what many perceive as an escalating threat fueled by national rhetoric. The community is urged to unite across social, political, and economic lines to protect its heritage and ensure equal treatment and security. As the ongoing investigation continues, residents are left waiting for answers and a commitment to justice, reminding everyone that unity and resilience are crucial in these trying times for Lincoln Heights.

On February 28, 2023, a significant milestone was reached in Avondale with the grand opening of the Country Meat Co. Marketplace, a project that took a year and a half of dedicated planning and construction. Located at 3539 Reading Rd., this new grocery store is more than just a place to shop; it embodies a movement aimed at uplifting the community and abolishing the food desert that has plagued Avondale since the closure of its last full-service grocery store in 2008. Owner Tennell Bryant has emphasized the importance of mentorship and investment in this initiative, stating, “This isn’t just a grocery store. This is a movement. This is showing up for our people.” Hundreds gathered for the ribbon-cutting

ceremony, marking a historic moment as residents celebrated the return of accessible fresh food options and essential goods. Notably, the local government supported this effort with a $250,000 fund allocation, underscoring its value to the community. The store features a range of offerings, including fresh produce, a full-service meat counter, and a cozy coffee bar, and aims to create a strong sense of community among its patrons. Perry Ward, a lifelong Avondale resident, expressed enthusiasm after waiting over three decades for a locally owned grocery store. Bryant envisions the Country Meat Co. Marketplace as not only a grocery destination, but as a vital

hub that reinforces local connections and addresses the needs of the neighborhood for years to come.

With its doors now open, the Country Meat Co. Marketplace is already making a positive impact in Avondale. The store's vibrant atmosphere is a testament to the hard work and dedication that went into bringing this vision to life. Local farmers and artisans have found a home for their goods, and residents are thrilled to have a place that caters to their needs while supporting local businesses. Workshops and community events are planned to

foster education on nutrition and healthy eating, further cementing the store’s role as a cornerstone of the community.

The marketplace’s success is a beacon of hope, illustrating the power of communitydriven initiatives. As customers stroll through the aisles, they are greeted with friendly faces and a warm environment that feels like an extension of their own home. The coffee bar has quickly become a popular spot for neighbors to gather, share stories, and build new friendships.

This revitalization of Avondale is not just about commerce; it's about creating a thriving, self-sufficient community. The Country Meat Co. Marketplace stands as a proud symbol of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose and vision. In the coming months, the marketplace plans to expand its offerings and services, ensuring that Avondale

EMPOWERING BLACK ECONOMICS: UNITING FOR A EMPOWERING BLACK ECONOMICS: UNITING FOR A PROSPEROUS COMMUNITY PROSPEROUS COMMUNITY

In a world where the Black community wields a staggering $1.6 trillion in buying power annually, the question arises: how much of that wealth remains within our own neighborhoods? Shockingly, studies show that the Black dollar circulates within our community for only six hours, in stark contrast to the white dollar, which circulates for 17 days. This article explores the imperative for the Black community to unite in building a sustainable economic ecosystem by consistently patronizing Black-owned businesses 365 days a year. The benefits are profound: enriched local economies, job creation, decreased crime rates, and improved educational opportunities. For instance, investing in Black-owned grocery stores helps combat food deserts and fosters nutritional education, while funding Black-led

schools supports our youth's academic success through culturally relevant curriculums. By redirecting our spending from temporary pleasures, such as entertainment and luxury items, towards community-oriented initiatives like purchasing from local artisans or investing in real estate we can create a great support system for future generations. Furthermore, as a collective, we must advocate for our elected officials to utilize our tax dollars to benefit our needs and aspirations. The time has come for us to educate, unify, and harness our consumer power to invest in ourselves, ensuring a prosperous future for the entire nation, as a thriving Black community enriches the social fabric of America. By embracing this vision, we can cultivate a sense of pride and ownership within our

communities, inspiring others to follow suit. Initiatives like community investment clubs and cooperative businesses can play a pivotal role, allowing individuals to pool resources and share in the success of local enterprises. Additionally, mentorship programs that connect seasoned entrepreneurs with emerging business owners can facilitate knowledge exchange and foster a culture of innovation and resilience.

It's also crucial to leverage technology and digital platforms to amplify Black-owned businesses. Online marketplaces, social media campaigns, and dedicated apps can spotlight these enterprises, making it easier for consumers to support them. As awareness grows, so does the potential for partnerships with larger corporations that are committed to diversity and inclusion.

Education remains a cornerstone of this movement. Workshops, seminars, and online courses tailored to financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills can empower individuals to make informed decisions and become catalysts for change. By equipping ourselves with the tools to navigate the economic landscape, we set the stage for long-term success.

Ultimately, this journey is about more than economic empowerment; it's about forging a legacy of selfsufficiency and communal solidarity. As we continue to unite and uplift one another, we pave the way for a future where the Black community not only thrives but leads by example demonstrating the transformative power of collective action and shared prosperity.

As Cincinnati celebrates Women’s History Month, it is vital to honor the courageous and influential women in our community who tirelessly work to uplift and propel our city forward. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s fitting to spotlight Denisha Porter, the dynamic Executive Director of All-In Cincinnati, whose unwavering commitment to justice and equity is reshaping our community. Denisha’s journey began at just 11 years old when she passionately advocated to save a science lab at Rockdale Elementary, igniting a lifelong mission of advocacy and public health. With a rich background in leading policy changes at the Cincinnati Health Department, she stepped into her current role at All-In Cincinnati with the vision of dismantling systemic barriers intersecting housing, education, and economic mobility for women and families. Under her leadership, All-In Cincinnati challenges the status quo, believing that the wellbeing of women is synonymous with the flourishingofentirecommunities.

Central to their mission is a commitment to empowering women through bold initiatives that tacklesystemicchallenges.Theorganizationprovides financial literacy education, advocates for pay equity, and strives to create pathways into high-growth industries, all while offering vital community support for those facing domestic violence and housing insecurity.

One of their standout upcoming projects addresses the underrepresentation of women in the real estate appraisal sector, a critical field for economic empowerment. Partnering with local leaders and organizations, All-In Cincinnati aims to break down barriers that hinder women from entering and advancing in this industry, ensuring they have access to mentorship, training, andfinancialsupport.

By building a collaborative ecosystem, All-In Cincinnati ensures that women facing challenges are connected to the resources they need. The organization’s grassroots approach involves listening to community feedback, as demonstrated by their new initiative, "Empower & Eats," designed to elevate the voices of local entrepreneurs and encourage meaningful conversations with policymakers. Denisha is particularly proud of how community feedback has shaped their programs, as it ensures that the initiatives meet real needs and create tangiblechange.

In recognizing and amplifying voices that have been historically marginalized, they illuminate thepathforfuturegenerationstothrive.

In the face of climate change, the urgency for a greener lifestyle has never been greater, particularly within the Black community, which often bears the brunt of environmental issues. Studies reveal that communities of color are disproportionately affected by pollution and climate change impacts, making it crucial for us to embrace a greener way of living. By being conscious of our carbon footprint currently estimated at an average of 16.5 metric tons of CO2 per person in the U.S. we can significantly contribute to a healthier planet. Small individual actions, like recycling wherein Americans recycled only

35% of waste in 2021 composting organic waste, and reusing materials can collectively lead to substantial changes. Moreover, Cincinnati is leading the way with its current Green City Program, which encourages residents to adopt eco-friendly practices that not only beautify neighborhoods but also consolidate community strength and financial savings. Households can utilize solar energy by installing panels and by seeking incentives from local government programs, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, which generate a staggering 76% of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. On a family level, creating a

sustainable lifestyle could involve community gardening, local clean-up events, and school education programs that empower children and families to adopt environmental stewardship. At the city and state levels, engaging in policy advocacy for renewable energy initiatives like the Green Cincinnati Plan a commitment to reduce greenhouse gases by 83% by 2040 enables us to demand systemic changes. Green living is not just beneficial; it’s imperative for our survival and a vital investment in the future of our community and planet. In working toward a greener tomorrow, we not only foster a healthier environment for ourselves but also ensure a safer, more equitable world for generations to come.
