An Enemy of the People takes place in a provincial mountain village in 19th Century Norway. 1882 Norway was in the midst of a sudden expansion of its middle class after a brutal economic crisis a few decades earlier. This play centers around a pivotal moment for this small town's future: the opening of a spa resort that has the potential to change the town's fortune forever. The townsfolk have already started to feel the fruits of this massive project, with new businesses opening ready to serve the influx of tourists they expect will flood into town to enjoy the healing baths of restorative alpine water. At the start of this play, we are at the end of a long winter and just starting to feel the welcoming of springtime. With positive buzz spreading about the new resort, everyone in town is gearing up for what promises to be the most important summer season of the town's history.

Dramaturg

Closer Look: Henrik Ibsen

Henrik Ibsen-Playwright

Henrik Ibsen was born on March 20, 1828, in Skien, Norway, a small town about seventy miles south-west of Oslo on the west coast of the Oslo Fjord. After his father’s bankruptcy, Ibsen’s family descended into poverty. At age 15 he left his home to work as an apprentice to an apothecary. Between work and studying for university exams, Ibsen began writing his first play, Catiline, which began his career as a playwright and director.

Often called “the father of prose drama,” Henrik Ibsen helped shape the foundation of modern theater. In an era when European drama was expected to uphold strict ideals of family and decorum, Ibsen’s plays were seen as scandalous. His work pulled back the curtain on social facades, confronting uncomfortable truths with a sharp critical eye and a fearless approach to morality and everyday life

First published in 1882, Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People remains strikingly relevant more than 140 years later. One in a series of sharp critiques of society, the play expands Ibsen’s lens from the private sphere of the household to the broader dynamics of a community. An Enemy of the People provokes powerful questions for us to consider about our duty to one another, the responsibility of the press, the role of the individual in society, and the pressure to conform in the face of inconvenient but undeniable truths.

Amy Herzog is an acclaimed American playwright and writer known for her impactful, intimate works that often draw from her personal life and family history. Her notable plays include After the Revolution, which earned her multiple awards and explores political divisions within a family, and its sequel, 4,000 Miles, which reflects on intergenerational connections and personal journeys.

In 2023, Herzog entered the world of adaptations and quickly gained a reputation as a contemporary “Ibsen whisperer” after her adaptation of A Doll’s House earned six Tony Award nominations on Broadway. An Enemy of the People marks her second foray into Ibsen’s work. Nearly 150 years after it was written, the play remains strikingly relevant for its environmental themes.

The 2024 revival starred Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli and was directed by Herzog’s husband, Sam Gold. The production had a 16-week run on Broadway. While maintaining the original late-1800s time period, Herzog’s adaptation streamlines the language and alters elements of the plot to create a version distinct from Ibsen’s original. In an interview with The New York Times, Herzog explained, “On A Doll’s House, I was mostly trying to channel him, and on this I felt like I was trying to channel him, but also having an argument with him… I felt like, you haven’t given me what I need here, so I’m going to have to make some things up.”

Ibsen’s work has long influenced Herzog’s, and through her adaptations, she has found a way to both honor and reshape his plays, making them uniquely her own.
