Nonprofits in the News A year in review for charitable giving in the tri-state.

Boots on the Ground Fund Awards $836,000 to Local Nonprofits In April, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF), in partnership with the City of Cincinnati, awarded $836,000 in Boots on the Ground Fund grants to 38 local nonprofits. These funds serve to strengthen small, community-based organizations with a programming focus on housing, food and healthcare access, gun violence prevention, workforce and youth development, mental health, and substance use services. “We’ve seen firsthand that when access and opportunity are available to all, our entire community benefits,” says Adison Nelson, senior director of community investments at GCF. “The Boots on the Ground Fund is providing support to grassroots nonprofits that are making a real difference in Greater Cincinnati.” X gcfdn.org/ recentgrants

In June, the Lindner Center of Hope hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of its Mason campus. The expansion project includes a new four-story, 75,000-square-foot medical office building as well as a 10,800-square-foot addition to the Sibcy House, the center’s residential diagnostic unit. “This project is significant as Lindner Center of Hope grows to meet the mental health needs of our community and the national demand for sophisticated mental health diagnostic assessment,” says Michael Groat, the Lindner Center’s president and CEO. “This expansion reflects a simple truth: Mental health care is not a luxury, it is a necessity. And together, we are declaring that this community, here in Mason and here in Ohio, will lead the way in providing it.” X lindnercenterofhope.org

Building Value Partners with Pump Salon for Sustainable Deconstruction In August, the nonprofit Building Value, which specializes in sustainable deconstruction and workforce development, was selected by Pump Hair Salon to deconstruct its Rookwood Commons location. The salon—which was absorbed into its parent company, Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa, after deciding to not renew its Rookwood lease—reached out directly to Building Value to salvage as much material as possible. “We were honored that Mitchell’s chose to partner with us on this project,” says Sheryl Woodhouse, Building Value’s director. “Their forward-thinking approach to deconstructing the salon was win-win-win, creating benefits for everyone involved…by diverting valuable materials from the landfill and [providing] meaningful hands-on learning experiences for our crew.” X buildingvalue.org

Lindner Center of Hope Breaks Ground on Largest Expansion Since Opening

Reds All-Star Elly De La Cruz Joins Forces with Hoxworth Blood Center From September 1 through October 31, anyone who donated whole blood or platelets at one of Hoxworth’s seven neighborhood centers or select mobile drives received a limited-edition Elly De La Cruz shirt.

De La Cruz—who made his Major League Baseball debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2023 and quickly became a fan favorite—is part of St. Elizabeth’s Health Champion campaign. “Having an All-Star like Elly stand with Hoxworth and champion our mission is a reminder of what makes this city so extraordinary,” says David Oh, M.D., co-director of Hoxworth Blood Center. “We are deeply grateful to Elly for shining a spotlight on the importance of blood donation. LADD Celebrates 50 Years

Santa Maria Community Services Receives $100,000 Grant from the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr. Foundation Santa Maria Community Services received a $100,000 grant from the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr. Foundation in support of its Promoting Our Preschoolers (POP) program in September. The grant will support POP’s mission of preparing young children in Greater Price Hill for kindergarten and lifelong learning. With this funding, Santa Maria will continue providing home visiting, literacy-rich experiences, and summer reading camps designed to help children develop key skills in print knowledge, linguistic awareness, and receptive and expressive language. “Promoting Our Preschoolers helps children enter kindergarten ready to learn and thrive,” says H.A. Musser, Jr., president and CEO of Santa Maria Community Services. “We are deeply grateful to the Carol Ann and Ralph V. In September, Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled (LADD) celebrated 50 years of championing inclusion and independence for adults with developmental disabilities. “LADD is more than a service provider,” says Susan Brownknight, CEO of LADD. “We are a force for community development and innovation. From our Smart Living Homes for independent living and an internationally recognized film festival to our employment and health and wellness programming, our work is cutting edge, connected, and always puts our mission at its center. Thanks to our founders, families, the people we support, our staff, and our community partners, LADD is ready for a future filled with opportunity.” The anniversary event for residents, employees, families, partners, and supporters took place on September 26. Beech Acres Parenting Center Hosts “For the Love of Kids” Festival For the second year in a row, Beech Acres Parenting Center held its free, kid-friendly “For the Love of Kids” festival to commemorate the families helped by the organization since its inception in 1849. The event took over Ziegler Park on October 26 with a day full of activities, games, giveaways, and entertainment, including zoo animals, arts and crafts, music, and circus performers. There was also a special teen art competition concluded at the festival with judging from celebrity judges. X beechacres.org

Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio Receives $50,000 Grant from Truist Foundation Awards In October, the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio received a $50,000 grant from Truist Foundation in support of its mission to end generational poverty through programs and services that empower individuals to build sustainable careers and launch successful businesses. Truist Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Truist Financial Corporation, funding initiatives that focus on creating career pathways to economic mobility and supporting small business growth. “This generous contribution from the Truist Foundation helps expand our impact,” says Christie Kuhns, president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Southwestern Ohio. “We are deeply grateful for their partnership and shared commitment to economic mobility and opportunity.” X ulgso.org

On a humid summer afternoon in Burnet Woods, a group of University of Cincinnati students set up their cameras and sound equipment. They’re not filming a music video or a class project—they’re producing an educational series on birdwatching, water quality, and the ecological wonders of one of the city’s parks. The project, funded by the City of Cincinnati’s Seeds of Change Youth Climate Action Grants, reflects a growing truth: Young people aren’t waiting for someone else to save the planet.

They’re doing it themselves, one community garden at a time.

“Plenty of youth involved in these projects are under 18 and can’t even vote,” says Rachel Bickett, sustainability project coordinator with the City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment & Sustainability. “But that doesn’t stop them from shaping the way their city looks through their hard work and dedication to making their communities more sustainable, equitable, and resilient.”

That philosophy, activating local solutions led by local youth, is at the heart of Cincinnati’s Seeds of Change Grant Program, a community-driven initiative launched as part of the city’s Green Cincinnati Plan. The program invests in grassroots sustainability projects across neighborhoods, many of which directly involve or are entirely led by young people.

Since its start, it has funded more than 100 projects with over $500,000 in awards, reaching nearly 6,000 residents. The goal is to hit $1 million in community climate investments by 2028.

Though climate change has long been framed as an issue for the next generation, for today’s youth, the crisis isn’t in some distant future; it’s now. Flooding, extreme heat, and poor air quality are already reshaping their daily lives in Cincinnati, especially in neighborhoods historically hit hardest by environmental inequities.

“With 84 percent of youth around the world reporting that they’re worried about

climate change, it’s critical that we continue to value and support youth voices and action,” Bickett says.

That support in Cincinnati takes many forms. While Seeds of Change provides the funding and framework, local nonprofits are building the programming that empowers youth to step into climate leadership. Green Umbrella’s Green Schoolyards Action Network and Groundwork Ohio River Valley’s Green Team and Green Corps are two of the most visible examples, offering hands-on experiences that blend environmental education, workforce training, and community impact.

For Ryan Mooney-Bullock, executive director of Green Umbrella, the classroom doesn’t stop at the school door.

ensure that students have access to time outside in natural spaces as a part of their school experience,” she says. “We know not every family prioritizes that, and we think it’s too important to leave that up to chance.”

Over the past five years, Green Umbrella has partnered with Cincinnati Public Schools to design and implement green schoolyards across the district that feature outdoor classrooms, native gardens, vegetable plots, fruit trees, and tree canopies that provide shade and stormwater absorption.

“It’s not just kids going out onto an asphalt playground and calling that time outside,” Mooney-Bullock explains.

“It’s time outside where they’re really interacting with the natural environment.”

The impact is already evident. At Aiken High School, students cultivate produce in their garden that they are working to be able to sell to the cafeteria, learning food safety standards alongside horticulture. Teachers are

equipped with toolkits and professional development to weave outdoor education into their lesson plans. For students, it’s more than just a science class.

“It’s really transformative,” Mooney-Bullock says.

“Students tell us it’s their favorite class. They look forward to being out in the garden. They’re learning so much about themselves, each other and how to care for their environment.”

While Green Umbrella is reshaping what learning looks like inside the district, Groundwork Ohio River Valley is focused on what comes next: jobs.

“Our Green Team is a youth-focused workforce development program for ages 14 to 18,” says Executive Director Sarah Kent. “For many of them, it’s their very first job.

But that doesn’t stop them from shaping the way their city looks through their hard work and dedication to making their communities more sustainable, equitable, and resilient.”—RACHEL BICKETT sional certifications funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields grants that prepare them for careers in energy, conservation, and environmental engineering. Many go straight into jobs with partners like Cardinal Land Conservancy or the Cincinnati Parks Department.

“We try to expose them to as many different people as possible,” Kent says. “Park rangers, EPA engineers, you name it. If they can connect with one of those topics,

and packing their lunches, and they’re doing meaningful work in their own neighborhoods.”

That work ranges from planting community gardens in Madisonville to restoring trails in Mt. Echo Park. In the summer, teams might be stationed at the Cincinnati Zoo, where they learn horticulture and environmental management while also working in the surrounding community of Avondale.

The Green Corps, Groundwork’s program for young adults 18 to 26, takes it further. Participants earn profes-

Together, these programs are tackling climate change at both the micro and macro level. Green Schoolyards address equity in education and exposure to nature, while Green Team and Green Corps strengthen neighborhood resilience with green infrastructure. Seeds of Change ties it all together with funding and recognition that community-driven ideas matter.

In the West End, Groundwork plans a large tree planting, with hopes of eventually funding a neighborhood-specific Green Team. In Lower Price Hill, youth have collected data on air quality for six years, informing where trees are planted to combat pollution. Across the city, schoolyards now feature pollinator gardens and rain-absorbing landscapes that help mitigate flooding.

“These projects show that youth-led initiatives aren’t just symbolic,” Bickett says.

“They’re creating real, measurable improvements in Cincinnati’s neighborhoods.”

And the ripple effect goes beyond the environment. Youth who participate gain confidence, leadership skills and career pathways. There are times when a new hairdo is more than just a new hairdo. It can be a confidence boost, a pick-meup, and, in some cases, can literally save a life. These organizations and programs are giving Cincinnatians’ locks a little love.

THE BARE HAIR Melissa King started The Bare Hair 5k Run/Walk in Springboro after her youngest daughter developed alopecia, an autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss on the scalp and other parts of the body like eyebrows and eyelashes. In the first eight years of operation, the event raised more than $50,000 for alopecia charities. “It may not sound like much to lose hair, but it is so much more than ‘just hair,’” King says.“Walking around completely bald or with bald patches all over your head takes a great deal of bravery. And to deal with all the comments and stares also requires great strength.” The run/walk is held annually in September, drawing hundreds of participants from Ohio and surrounding states.

THE GERIATRIC HAIR CARE ORGANIZATION While cutting hair at a nursing home in 2021, cosmetologist Ashley Warner realized that several residents hadn’t been serviced because of financial constraints. The oversight planted the seed for The Geriatric Hair Care Organization (GHCO), which raises funds for aging adults in long-term care facilities who can’t afford routine haircuts and washes. “Many families assume that haircuts, washes, and detangling are provided by the nursing facilities, but they’re not,” Warner says. “It’s important for cosmetology to be more integrated in the healthcare field, so we can preserve the dignity of these individuals and relieve healthcare staff of the burden of scalp and hair care, so they can continue to focus on their expertise.” In 2023, the GHCO team was able to donate more than $5,000 in free salon services that include haircuts, scalp treatments, and hours of detangling matted hair. geriatrichaircare.org

I

started the free wig campaign after a customer’s daughter came into my store to inquire about a wig for her mother who was waiting in the car. She was too weak to come in because she had just completed her second round of chemo. Her story touched my heart, and I wanted to do more than just sell her a wig. I wanted to give her something that would bring joy and a little hope.

A cancer diagnosis is scary all by itself. And when you add in hair loss due to treatments, the entire experience can be traumatic. Oftentimes these women can no longer work due to treatment side effects, which makes it even harder to afford a quality wig. I believe it’s important that these women feel a sense of normalcy as they go out in public. And through this wig giveaway, we’re able to give them just that plus more.

During my first year doing the giveaway my goal was to help five women because that’s all I could afford to do. Now, thanks to the generous support of other local organizations, I’m looking to help close to 50 women this year, and offer spa kits, head bonnets, brushes for the wigs, and silk hair wraps. The wigs come directly from my line of 100 percent virgin hair or are donated by other local organizations and come in a variety of colors, sizes, and styles for all ages, stages, and ethnic backgrounds. I’ve gotten letters and cards from the different wig recipients we’ve helped over the past two years and my heart melts reading their heartfelt messages thanking me for the work we do.

She recently celebrated her 10th year of offering custom-made wigs to cancer survivors with an annual fund-raiser, this year called The Pink & Black Ball.

ack in 2015, I had a client who was diagnosed with cancer.

She had started chemo and was losing hair, so she called me one day to say she was ready to cut it all off. She came in, we went to a private room, and the tears started falling. I had never experienced something like that before. After that, we decided to make a wig for her. At the same time, my grandmother’s cancer had come back. I started thinking, “I want to do something that would be meaningful and also help women. I could get a fundraiser going and use the proceeds to custom make the free wigs that I will give away.” That’s how Maggie’s Hair Blessings was born.

My goal was simple: Give women the gift of hair. That’s why my motto is “May This Hair Be a Blessing To You.” If I could just make one or two women feel whole again with the gift of hair, then I have accomplished something good. I feel what I’m doing is very important because I know as women, our hair is our thing! To go completely bald is to lose a a part of ourselves. In the last nine years, I’ve helped more than 40 women. I would like to think that I have changed the lives of some of these women. To hear the stories of how they didn’t feel beautiful or how they had been depressed until I placed the wig on their heads and turned them to the mirror, the joy in their eyes was so rewarding.

After losing Ben to suicide at age 19, we strive to prevent suicide from happening to another young person, family or community. The Bridge Adaptive Sports & Recreation ESTABLISHED 2021 MISSION Our mission is to increase awareness and promote opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in adaptive sports and recreation in order to improve their quality of life.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY The Bridge Adaptive Sports & Recreation is a nonprofit making sports accessible to individuals with disabilities. SERVING OUR COMMUNITY The Cincinnati Fire Foundation supports the Cincinnati Fire Department and surrounding communities through funding, equipment, and training that enhance public safety. We have equipped the Emergency Medical Bike Unit (EMBU), secured FIDO pet rescue bags for every fire apparatus in the city, and funded Stop the Bleed training supplies for local schools and businesses.

In partnership with the Cincinnati Parks Foundation, we provide bike helmets for children and adults and supply books for firefighter classroom reading programs.

Foodbank is the largest emergency food and services provider to children and families in Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana. The organization distributes over 47.2 million meals annually to low-income individuals and families. The Freestore Foodbank supports 579 community partners in 20 counties throughout Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana, including food kitchens, homeless shelters, emergency food pantries, social service centers, and food distributions.

The Freestore Foodbank responds to the issue of poverty and food insecurity in our community and provides an array of services including SNAP Assistance,

Medicaid outreach, and more. Last year the Freestore Foodbank rescued 6 million pounds of food from local retailers.

Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation ESTABLISHED 2002 MISSION The mission of the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation is to end the cycle of domestic violence and abuse through education.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Through our flagship program Margaret’s Place, Safe At Home establishes safe rooms in partner schools in Ohio, New York, California, and two international sites.

Master’s-level counselors support children impacted by violence on their path to healing and educate communities to end the cycle of domestic violence and abuse. KEEPGOING 25 strives to empower young people to LEAD with purpose, LOVE through being present and create a brighter future through their actions and commitment to SERVICE. The KEEPGOING 25 Foundation was established to honor the memory of an extraordinary individual, Michael Currin.

After Michael’s tragic passing in 2020, the Currin-Carroll family channeled their grief into a mission, founding the KEEPGOING 25 Foundation to reflect his unwavering commitment to service. Michael was charismatic yet humble, kind yet steadfast in his faith. A natural leader, he inspired and uplifted his family, friends, and teammates, embodying the spirit of “KEEPGOING“ by always showing up for others with compassion and encouragement.

MISSION

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY ILLUMI-NITE is our annual service initiative funded by KEEPGOING 25. Taking place in December, this event allows youth to demonstrate empathy by placing luminaries and

handwritten notes of encouragement at the homes of those who would appreciate the KEEPGOING message.

KEEPGOING Service Grants are intended to fund youth and young adult initiatives that further the mission of KEEPGOING 25. Projects must be studentdriven, action-oriented, and impact the community. Grants are available triannually.

It’s more than a dress—it’s a journey to discover your true self.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Our unique non-profit serves students in grades 9–12 with a personal or financial need and makes their prom dreams a reality.

Prom is a rite of passage for high school students. Everyone should feel this sense of belonging and inclusion. Without our services, the students might not have a chance to participate and be a part of this important high school milestone. Each student that comes to our boutique is assigned a personal shopper to help them find the perfect dress, new shoes, a new handbag, two accessories to complement their dress, and free on-site alterations.

We empower these young women to look, and more importantly, feel their best by providing them with not only a dress and

all the accessories but also kind words, confidence, love, and patience. Many of our students have told us we help them overcome barriers we didn’t even know existed.

La Soupe ESTABLISHED 2015 MISSION La Soupe bridges the gap between food waste and hunger by transforming surplus ingredients into nutritious meals for those in need through the power of chefs.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY An estimated 18 million households experience food insecurity, meaning they lack reliable access to sufficient, affordable, and nutritious food. Simultaneously, 38 percent of all food in the U.S. goes unsold or uneaten, with 80 million tons of perfectly good food ending up in landfills.

At La Soupe, we turn rescued food into nourishment and opportunity by transforming high-quality, perishable food that would otherwise go to waste into nutritious meals, led by our professional chefs and dedicated volunteers. MomsHope ESTABLISHED Since 2016, then becoming a non-profit organization in 2019 MISSION MomsHope provides hope to single, low-income moms through oneon-one faith-based mentoring in order to support their resource development, personal advancement, spiritual growth, and family stability.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY MomsHope serves the Greater Cincinnati community by walking alongside single, low-income mothers as they build stability, confidence, and brighter futures for their families. SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Serenity Recovery Network provides safe, structured, abstinence-based recovery housing that helps individuals build stable, sober lives.

Our long-term program offers up to a year of guided living where residents develop life skills, pursue employment or education, and engage in community service.

WEST Wildlife Rehab ESTABLISHED 2018 MISSION Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and return to the wild sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife while fostering peaceful coexistence between people and the wild creatures who share our communities.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY We intake sick, injured, and orphaned native mammals like opossums, squirrels, cottontail bunnies, and red foxes that are found and brought to us by the public. Orphans are raised to be wild to ensure they have a good chance at survival upon release. Animals who are too sick and injured to be rehabilitated are given a peaceful, pain free passing through humane euthanasia administered by veterinarians.

• We receive frequent calls to our helpline about wildlife (usually squirrels, raccoons, and bats) that have taken up residence in garages, attics, walls of homes, and other areas where they don’t belong. We have been trained to educate these callers about humane options for exclusion and removal of unwanted guests who almost always are seeking a safe space to give birth and rear their young.

• WEST spends a lot of time educating the

public about state laws. For instance, it’s illegal to be in possession of wildlife for more than 48 hours without a state permit, so if you find a baby squirrel, raccoon, opossum, etc., it is not legal to keep it and raise it on your own as a pet.

• We do education/outreach programs for schools, scouts, garden clubs, nature centers, etc., accompanied by one or more of our nonreleasable wild ambassadors.

• We get many calls and messages from outside our service area and try to help people find rehabbers in their geographical areas.

• In January 2025, WEST worked with the Humane Society of the United States and the Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators Association to help rescue over 300 animals from a horrific fur farm in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Two of the rescued skunks are now WEST education ambassadors.

This year’s free programs included a swim team with 49 swimmers, swim lessons for 600 children and adults, a weekly drop-in basketball program, a 10week summer camp with nearly 80 daily campers and a series of events specifically for neighborhood teenagers. In 2026, we plan to enhance our current programs to expand our youth engagements and strengthen our community.
