A NOTE FROM BLAKE
WELCOME TO OUR 2025-26 SEASON! WE’RE THRILLED TO DIVE INTO an exciting new year of plays and musicals to entertain, challenge and inspire you.

This year, we begin our season in the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre with Jeff Augustin’s Where the Mountain Meets the Sea – a moving and theatrical exploration of generational, cultural and emotional distance. Centered around a Haitian immigrant father and his American-born son, the play explores two road trips taken decades apart. Originally commissioned by the Actors Theatre of Louisville for the 2020 Humana Festival of New American Plays, it’s a deeply human story that trades spectacle for sincerity and invites audiences to reflect on the legacies we inherit, whether we realize it or not. With a lyrical, monologue structure, punctuated by live music, this play is both moving and profound in its simplicity and humanity.
Our production also marks the return of director Timothy Douglas, a Playhouse favorite for many years. His recent productions of Primary Trust and Clyde‘s were loved by audiences, and I’m confident you’ll feel the same way about Where the Mountain Meets the Sea
We are now in the midst of rehearsing and building Mythic – the new pop-rock musical opening the season in Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre in September. We’ve brought together an A-list creative team led by three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall to bring this unique and entertaining new musical to life. Mythic is a U.S. premiere with Broadway ambitions, and Cincinnati audiences will get to see it first! That’s a benefit only the Playhouse provides to our community.
If you are a season ticket holder, thank you for your ongoing, loyal support. We couldn’t do it without you! If you aren’t, you may be surprised to know that you can join our season ticket family with as few as three shows. From intimate stories of connection and a playful adaptation of a beloved novel to a charming new mystery about Agatha Christie and more, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of options to entertain you in our coming season!
Enjoy the show!

PARALLEL JOURNEYS
Where the Mountain Meets the Sea depicts the parallel cross-country journeys of a father and son, connected by memories and mountain music. Before Jonah was born, his parents took a trip from Miami to Los Angeles to explore America, their new chosen home. Years later, Jonah takes the trip in reverse to better understand his father’s life and legacy. The map above highlights the cities and landmarks mentioned throughout their travels.

WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE SEA
AS A STORYTELLER: AN INTERVIEW WITH PLAYWRIGHT JEFF AUGUSTIN
How did you become interested in theatre and specifically in playwriting?
In Haiti, entire villages gather at night around fires and candlelight to hear a single storyteller bring folklore to life. These tales weave magical and fantastical elements together with human desire. In these stories, characters constantly run away from their family and their homeland in search of a new identity. But in a world where spirits, deities, and God put their thumb on the scales of life, these characters cannot outrun their destinies.
When my family made the journey to America, they carried these narratives and the Haitian tradition of oral storytelling with them. I am the youngest of seven, and my sister and I are the only two born in the states. Growing up, I heard these stories often. It’s where my journey as a storyteller began. In high school I did spoken word, and in college I found my way into the theatre.
In the first play I read, Lifetime on the Streets, Gus Edwards writes, “These are the stories behind the faces we see but never get to know. Their hopes, loves, dreams, and desires.” Growing up I rarely saw stories in popular culture about the Haitian and Haitian American experience or about queer men of color. The desire to tell the stories of my mom, my neighbors in Miami, the people in my parents’ village in Haiti inspired me to become a playwright. Ironically, as the world becomes more connected, there are so many worlds that are on the verge of being lost, so many people whose voices are not heard. I want to capture the beauty, ugliness, strength, and fragility of those worlds to show that at the core there is a similar drive and nature to create and destroy in us all.

How did you develop the idea and craft the story for Where the Mountain Meets the Sea?
My first play in New York was Little Children Dream of God, and it was a play heavily inspired by my mom. A literary manager was interested in a play about my dad, and that’s when the play began to take shape.
The first thing that came to mind was a road trip play, because I grew up in Miami and now live in LA and I don’t drive. My dad has worked at an airport since immigrating to Miami from Haiti and does not like to fly. As a first-generation kid, I have a very different relationship with America and the idea of the American Dream than my father who deeply believes in it. A cross-country road trip felt like a way for a father and a son to connect. A parent’s death can make us want a connection with them in a
WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE SEA
way that wasn’t possible when they were alive. At the same time, I began to think about how we as children never think of our parents’ lives outside of our own. It’s as if they didn’t exist before we came into the world.
Many of my plays come from a personal place. I have a very complicated relationship with my dad. We love to joke and talk about sports and politics and just rib each other. But if you dug deep, you’d realize that most of our conversations stay on the surface. And whenever we approach my sexuality, he sort of skirts around it.
The play began as a traditional family road trip, set after the father’s death, with scenes in cars and hotels. But that didn’t feel right. The first things I wrote were two monologues, one from the son and the other from the dad, and they felt like the heart of the play. (Versions of these monologues open the play.) So, I decided to make it a two-hander play composed of monologues.
Once the form started to take shape, I asked myself: What could bring these two men, who are worlds apart, together? Music was the first thing that came to my mind. Growing up, music was always playing in the house. Mainly Haitian music. Over time, I kept returning to folk music, which is a concept that spans many cultures. There’s Americana of course, but also Haitian folk music, both of which have roots in Africa — just think of the banjo. At that point, the play came alive.
This show brings two different styles of writing and music together in a unique and interesting way. What connected you to The Bengsons and what was the collaborative process like?
Annie MacRae, the associate artistic director at Atlantic Theater Company in New York City, had read an early draft of the play. I had elaborate stage directions where I thought music
should go with details regarding the music and lyrics. She thought The Bengsons would be a perfect fit. I listened to their music and just fell in love with their sound and vivid storytelling. Luckily, we had the same agent, who sent them the play. We had a meeting and clicked immediately on both a personal and an artistic level. We all felt like the play should feel like one of those magical intimate nights you have with a friend. Where you sit outside in your backyard looking up at the stars or in your living room with candles lit, sharing a bottle of rosé, finding yourself opening up in ways you never imagined and it’s cathartic and pulls you two closer. It’s someone singing a song that you both love or the radio pulling y’all into a dance. It comes out of the moment and pulls you into the next.
Before our first workshop, The Bengsons sent me a demo album with about 12 or so songs that could be in the play. And then from there we all made discoveries in workshops and rehearsals, and we felt that the whole play should have a score. New songs were written, and others were rearranged. It was such an organic and magical process. They’re two of the most beautiful and artistic souls I’ve ever had the fortune to work with.
What would you most like audiences to take away from this show?
I want them to feel optimistic, that it’s not too late, to reach out to that parent or loved one and say the hard words. I want them to feel like Jonah — seen and loved.
