The Beauty of Change
Featuring as this month’s rising star is Andrew Thomas Jones, @hairbyandrewthomasjones, discussing his craft of low-maintenance blonde, creating your own signature look, and the opening of his debut salon, Cobh Studios.
Please introduce yourself and tell us what ignited your passion for hair?
I’m Andrew Thomas Jones, owner of Cobh Studios and Redken Advocate. I’ve wanted to be a hairdresser since I was 5! I have fond childhood memories of pretending to curl my mum’s hair with tongs that weren’t plugged in, and I was obsessed with any blonde character in a TV show or film.
What would you describe your speciality as, and how did this define your target audience?
I’m a big fan of low-maintenance colour that’s still impactful and very commercial. Hair that when you see it you want it. I think that’s how I’ve been able to build my niche in the last few years, as I find clients want colour that looks great, feels modern, and doesn’t need to be redone
every 6 weeks. I also do a lot of hair extension work, and like to create super discreet, natural-looking hair extensions that really just enhance the client’s hair. Creating extensions that look, feel and move like natural hair.
All of your hair imagery looks stunning! Please tell us, how did you find your style, and what are your tips for other specialists trying to stand out?
I think I just really love commercial, wearable hair, so I always keep that in
my mind when styling and finishing hair. I want it to be saveable and achievable for clients. I think, for other people, it’s good to create hair that represents you and your work, creating your own brand, so, when someone sees it, they know it’s yours.
How do you make sure your treatments stand out from competitors?
I really try not to focus on what other people are doing anymore. Since going out on my own and opening my studio, I just want to focus on offering the best
Andrew Thomas Jones
services and client experience that I can. I think working one-on-one with clients allows the appointment to feel more special. I’ll always run new additions via my clients too, whether it’s a new drink on the menu or a new retail product. I value their opinion and want to make their experience with me the best that I can.
What is your favourite treatment or look that clients ask for?
I think it’s a low-maintenance blonde. I do a lot of colour conversions on clients, so taking them from a buildup up of highlights and injecting depth and dimension back into the hair. That’s one of my favourite services to do. And again, extensions are at the top of my list too. Having a client get their dream hair and seeing them leave with a huge confidence boost, it just fills my heart so much!
What has been your career highlight so far?
I think my highlight so far is opening Cobh. I went out on my own after working in salons for 15 years, and, at the end of 2023, I opened my one-chair studio. Being able to grow and expand after a year into a new studio, and to create a space where I can build a team and help other professionals have a space that they can grow and deliver their best services was a huge dream of mine.
Following on from this, what are your goals for the future, and how do you plan to achieve them?
I really want to focus on making Cobh the best that I can. Having a much bigger space now, I want to start hosting small
events and education days, host some client events too, and just really enjoy the space. I was always a “what’s next” kind of person, but I’m taking this time after such a big move to just sit in the moment and enjoy it.

Meet the Team: Michelle Thompson, Educator
“My name is Michelle, and I’ve worked in the nail industry for 23 years! Throughout these years, I started working in my own salon and then grew to have my own client base. While working at the salon, I completed various nail courses to expand my skill set. This included earning a training qualification, which opened doors to the world of teaching.
In 2023, I started working as an educator for Halo, and I feel blessed to be part of their team! I still maintain my client base at home, using all things Halo. After recently becoming manager of the Halo Centre of Excellence, I’ve been brainstorming innovative ideas to drive growth and expansion at our training establishment, including introducing new courses to enhance our programme offerings.
It has always been my dream to run a training school, and now I have the opportunity to not only manage but also teach alongside a brand I believe in wholeheartedly. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with the next generation of nail technicians. Gel Polish & Manicure: One-Day Course, Beginner Level
As customer expectations evolve, discovering effective ways technology can assist with workflow is essential for staying ahead. And, with business costs continuing to rise, we sat down with Lesley Blair, MBE, CEO of BABTAC, to discuss the importance of business owners using AI to optimise their salons.
I’ve Got a Text!
AI-powered booking systems offer customers the convenience of booking appointments online or via an app at any time, and can recommend the best appointment times based on both staff availability and customer preferences, ensuring seamless scheduling. With automatic reminders and confirmations sent through SMS or email, pesky no-shows can be minimised.
It’s important to note that having an easily accessible phone number for emergencies is vital, but, for general day-to-day enquiries, let the technology take the load!
On Top of Stock
Monitoring stock automatically can help track inventory levels in real-time, alerting salon owners or managers when products are running low or expiring. Automated systems can also trigger reorder requests when supplies hit a certain threshold, ensuring products are always available or on order, without manual oversight. Consider generating reports for in-salon retail products to help identify slow-moving products that may need discounting.
Keeping Track
AI has the power to revolutionise the beauty experience by analysing customer preferences and purchase history, offering bespoke product and treatment recommendations tailored to each individual. With the ability to create detailed customer profiles, which include past services, and preferences, and future suggestions, it can help salons to provide a truly personalised experience for every client.
I’m Loyal Babe
Clients typically have an abundance of payment and loyalty cards in their purses, but remembering to actually use them? That’s a different story! Using automated loyalty technology helps to reward clients for their custom, without the faff of finding and stamping loyalty cards. There’s no need to offer freebies to clients, as this often devalues the product; instead, consider offering money or a percentage off when a full set of stamps have been collected.
Get Social Media Savvy
Harness customer data with AI to craft targeted advertising campaigns on social media that drive local traffic to the salon. Additionally, AI-powered social media analytics can offer valuable insights into customer engagement, helping salons understand which content resonates most with their customers.
Social media scheduling is also a vital tool to reduce the constant workload of social media. Take a few hours weekly or fortnightly to plan and schedule content for the upcoming week. For example, if you’re closed on Mondays, create and schedule a post on how people can still book when you’re closed, meaning you never miss out on a booking!
Flying Solo
Shortcuts: empowering salon and barbershop owners to provide next-level experiences to clients while their software runs a smooth business behind the scenes. Now, keeping up to date with industry shifts and demands, we introduce Shortcuts Aire, a platform to answer the needs of freelancers and micro-salons.
Shortcuts has cemented its position as the leading industry innovator by launching the first salon-specific, free booking platform for those choosing a more flexible career path. Responding to the growing trend in hairdressing, barbering and beauty towards self-employment, Shortcuts has used its 30-years’ experience to develop Shortcuts Aire, which answers the needs of individuals and micro-businesses, including helping shield freelancers and location owners from potential PAYE tax obligations.
Successful businesses need to be open 24/7 to capture every booking, but using a centralised salon booking system risks running afoul of HMRC, which in the past has ruled in-salon self-employment, especially where there is shared software as “disguised employment”. Meanwhile, current “free” booking systems for freelancers are rife with expensive hidden costs and don’t deliver the functions needed by hairdressers, barbers or beauty providers such as nail technicians and brow specialists. Shortcuts Aire, which launched March 2025, will offer the most comprehensive free system available, giving independents access to an online booking and appointment system that will help reinforce their employment status and their brand.
“The vast majority of stylists, barbers and therapists are female, and they often require a more flexible work model at various times during their career, but increasingly, so too are men,” says Joanna Burgess, Co-Founder and Head of Growth.
“Freelancers, solo operators, and micro salon owners deserve more than just a booking system—they need a platform that empowers them to thrive. That’s why we’re launching the most sophisticated, yet effortless, mobile solution, Shortcuts Aire, designed to handle the booking and business side of things, so stylists, barbers, and therapists can focus on what they do best: delivering incredible client experiences. With our Free package, we’re giving independent professionals the scheduling freedom and flexibility they crave, and with our Grow and Pro package options, we’re unlocking even greater power and potential. This is just the beginning for Aire—our vision is to keep pushing boundaries,
bringing groundbreaking innovations that redefine what’s possible for the industry”
Shortcuts Aire is a cloud-based system available anywhere at any time, creating an online booking profile and appointment book, client management and social media integration at no cost. It is also super-easy to set up online without the need to talk to a sales consultant, unless you want to. It is guaranteed free to individual users, but can accommodate micro-salons with up to six team members on its Aire Pro version.
The three-tier Shortcut Aire, with entry level completely free, provides a proactive, flexible and professionalfacing model that will allow users to flourish in the industry.
Launch your 24/7 online brand now with Shortcuts Aire. Head to shortcutsaire.com to learn more.

THE NEWEST INNOVATION IN CLEAN HAIR COLOUR
Talk AI to me!
Guided by industry experts, we delve into the rise of AI providing personalised treatments for hair and skincare, and what this means specifically for client satisfaction.
With AI slowly integrating into daily life, it truly never fails to dazzle, confuse and, quite frankly, baffle me, and, increasingly, I find myself thinking, “What did we do before it?” More recently, the integration of AI into the beauty industry is allowing for more personalised and effective solutions. Including this approach not only ensures that results are better aligned with the evolving needs of customers, but also enables appointments to be streamlined, enhancing efficiency.
Over recent years, a major shift has become visible in the salon industry, and technology is no longer just for the front desk or management; it’s become fully integrated into salon life. Naturally, in an industry built on creativity and personal connection, it is not surprising that there is an element of hesitation when something new is introduced. That being said, professionals are starting to see the benefits of technology for themselves: better earnings, more consistent formulas and happier clients.
To Josh Howard, CEO of Vish, the
Tech is no longer a ‘nice-tohave’; it’s becoming an essential infrastructure for running a successful salon.
future of technology in the salon industry is about precision, personalisation and profitability. Josh shared, “We’re moving beyond surface-level tools, like formula trackers, and into truly transformative systems, like Vish’s smart salon scale and colour management. Tech is no longer a “nice-to-have”; it’s becoming an essential infrastructure for running a successful salon.”
Looking to the future, Daniel Granger, salon owner and Schwarzkopf Professional ambassador, sees AI taking personalisation to the next level, refining recommendations, making treatments more effective, and ultimately leading to better results. Daniel shared, “I believe the future of the salon industry will be self-sufficient, with independent stylists fully in control of their business. Everything will be digital: consultations, tracking data and client history, all feeding into a system that creates solutions tailored to each person.
“AI will track previous services, hair history, and what works best, refining options like a checklist to make sure clients always get their perfect style. AI will also optimise bookings, track appointment times, manage rebookings, and send reminders to clients who might need them. It’s going to be a gamechanger for salon businesses, cutting costs while improving efficiency.”
Offering a more in-depth understanding, face and hair scanners can show what the naked eye is unable to, enhancing the customer experience. These tools will give stylists and clients a deeper understanding of hair and skin health, making services more precise and effective. Pioneering the salon of the future, the Schwarzkopf Professional SalonLab Smart Analyzer enables hairdressers to take the guesswork out of which products and services best suit each client’s hair type by analysing hair at a molecular level. The analyzer also helps to demonstrate the real, measurable benefits clients can see from using FibreClinix products and treatments.
Daniel sees these scanners providing the ability to become the “doctors of hair”, and he noted, “These scanners mean stylists can see what’s happening beneath the surface, helping us make more informed decisions. AI and trichology together can also help identify causes of hair thinning, and direct clients to specialists for further support. It’s all
It’s going to be a game-changer for salon businesses, cutting costs while improving efficiency.
about using technology to improve our expertise.”
Transitioning from hair to skin, AI skin scanners help to facilitate an elevated treatment from start to finish, looking beneath the surface to remove the guesswork from treatments and provide an understanding of what specifically, scientifically, clients need.
David Alpert, Managing Director at iiaa (Institute for Active Ageing), understands that salons in the UK are becoming more technically advanced every year, as the trend to showcase efficacy grows, and emphasised, “Clients want to understand the results that they are seeing from their spend.”
Acknowledging that clients want results they can comprehend and track, David noted, “At iiaa, we believe that our advances in technology are for the best both for the client and for the salon. It brings both together on a fully personalised and measurable skincare journey, offering a full business solution
for the skincare professional, as well as best-in-class accuracy to track results. At iiaa this technology is called: Eventis.
“This industry-leading business solution integrates a powerful skin analysis device, digital tools and an app suite to facilitate a seamless skin health journey. We ensure skincare professionals preserve profit margins and secure reliable revenue streams to drive longterm growth.
“In 2025, with a difficult economy and increasing demands on salon owners, Eventis offers a business solution to take pressure off the salon owner by marrying up the needs of the business owner and the consumer. It also supports consumer demand to purchase products that really deliver demonstrable results,” David finished.
In an industry where individuality, comfort and touch are at the centre, the thought of bringing in a machine can understandably feel daunting. This being said, sometimes the technology is
TECHNOLOGY
needed in order to provide the very best results from each treatment, working in tandem with professionals to enhance, not overrule, personal involvement.
David emphasised, “With Eventis, the client will see their own best-in-class before and after photographs. They will work individually with their therapist for the very best product and treatment recommendations, and be able to track their own journey and own results – all of which will be stored and communicated on their own personal app.”
Technology has helped to advance the industry as a whole, and Chloe Wilson, Global Head of Product Marketing for Shortcuts, shared, “Clients get the best of both worlds: the personal touch and artistic freedom of an independent professional, now paired with the convenience and smooth operation typically associated with high-end establishments. This technological evolution has helped solo practitioners not just compete with larger salons, but often surpass them in terms of client satisfaction.
“For freelance hairstylists and barbers, the technological horizon looks particularly bright. Technology is evolving beyond basic scheduling tools into comprehensive business partners for independent professionals. The future will blend the irreplaceable human touch with smart tech that handles the tedious admin bits that solo practitioners typically struggle with,” finished Chloe.
With a change in industry norms and the rise of the freelance hairdresser, not all technology and software were fulfilling the needs of the independent professional. In light of this, Shortcuts developed Shotcuts Aire, software that enhances, rather than complicates, the independent professional’s workflow. Chloe shared, “Handling everything from bookings to inventory and client records, Shortcuts Aire helps manage burdens to enable independent stylists to focus on their craft and building relationships, rather than drowning in paperwork.”
In the current economy, clients are eager to understand where they’re putting their pounds, and there is no easier way than AI to provide this evidence. Entirely removing the guesswork from product efficacy and treatment requirements, client satisfaction is enhanced instantly, seeing the results from beneath the surface
The future will blend the irreplaceable human touch with smart tech that handles the tedious admin bits that solo practitioners typically struggle with.
that won’t have been visible previously. Looking forward, the possibilities technology can bring to the industry are endless. Machines will never replace stylists, but AI is going to be a crucial and supplementary tool to the industry.
Letting technology take care of the business side, managing bookings, tracking stock and optimising sales, enables professionals to focus on their craft, making people feel and look incredible.

Apeer Lift Collection
Skin guru’s have long hailed Retinol as the “holy grail” ingredient in skincare. However, new EU regulations mean that there is now a limit in the strength of retinol products allowed: 0.3%. This is largely due to the negative side effects Retinol can cause such as skin irritation,
dryness, itching or burning, redness, peeling and sun sensitivity.
Introducing the Lift Collection RetinART®featuring
Ground-breaking new technology which delivers all of the benefits of Retinol
without any of the irritations. In clinical studies, it outperformed Retinol 0.3% on nearly every indicator!
The Apeer Lift Collection introduces a groundbreaking new technology in the world of skincare: RetinART®. As a next generation natural retinoid, it is clinically proven to be more effective than retinol at enhancing elasticity and skin firmness whilst reducing wrinkle depth. It works
by promoting the skins natural renewal process without causing any side effects or skin irritation.
“The Lift Series has consistently demonstrated clinically visible results. Retinart’s mechanism works efficiently by enhancing dermal firmness and providing a noticeable lifting effect in the treated area. As practitioners, our goal is to deliver evidence-based
treatments that promote both structural skin integrity and aesthetically refined outcomes.” – Victoria Burles - Piihl, RN, Aesthetic and Dermatological Nurse Specialist
Due to the phenomenon results and patient demand, Apeer are launching a series of professional treatments to compliment the retail range. Combining their wealth of dermatological expertise and years of knowledge, the forthcoming professional treatments promise to complement the existing retail range, delivering enhanced results and empowering individuals to achieve their desired skin goals.
The perfect addition for any Clinic.

1. Before the facial begins, communicate openly with the client to understand their skin concerns and goals. Whether the client has dryness, acne, or sensitivity, this consultation ensures the facial can be customised to suit specific needs.
2. Use steam and towels to prepare the skin. Prioritise the order of use. You can maximise the benefits of the facial and get the best results from the products used.
3. During the facial, try to create a relaxing environment to perform the facial without any interruptions. Stress can affect your skin’s appearance, so taking time to let clients unwind will benefit their overall look.
Larnie Cadwallader, Owner of Clinic 99
Cleanse the skin thoroughly using the HIVE® 1 Step Cleanser with the addition of steam to open the pores to allow for a deeper exfoliation. This deeper cleanse removes the buildup of dead skin cells to help refresh the skin and creates a clean canvas ensuring every step that follows is more effective.
Step one Step four
Time for mask two! Use the +maskology® vitamin C Mask, a professional sheet mask, packed with Blueberry, Yuzu Citrus, and Sea Buckthorn ,and leave it on for 15 minutes. This two-pronged treatment works to refresh the skin, leaving it glowing and plum.
Using the +maskology Skin Analyser, hydration and oil levels are measured in seconds to personalise each facial. In this case, the device confirmed an oily T-zone with dryness and dullness elsewhere, helping to guide the treatment for balanced, targeted results.
Step two Step five
Start to round off the treatment with the +maskology LED light mask. This tool is a great way to maximise treatment time while also ensuring a return on investment. With colours suitable for every concern, using the red light addresses anti-ageing, brightening and radiance.
At this stage, consider adding treatments for the hands, feet, body, or scalp to increase value and enhance the overall experience.
Mask up! Use the +maskology® Detoxifying Mask , as it foams, it deeply cleanses and micro massages the skin, targeting blackheads and oil. After 10 minutes, remove the mask and massage any remaining product into the skin. Rather than treating each area with separate products, the customised facial uses gentle yet effective products that are suitable across the whole face.
Step three Step six
Complete the treatment with the +maskology® Niacinamide Serum to refine, balance, and calm the skin. For an additional level of client care apply a moisturising SPF to lock in hydration and protect the skin barrier. The result is smoother, healthier-looking skin that feels nourished and refreshed.

Hair Extensions
Aftercare 101
With hair extensions being a large investment in personal care, aftercare is key to prolonging the life and quality of any extensions. Industry experts share how and what to offer when it comes to personalised aftercare to help build trust in the salon’s expertise and create a sense of loyalty.
Clients may question why aftercare matters; however, neglecting aftercare can lead to tangling, matting, and even cause damage to natural hair, and as professionals, you’re in the ideal position to educate and help clients understand the importance of upkeep.
It’s important to note that aftercare is not a case of one size fits all, and Dina Demetriou, Head of Education at Beauty Works, noted, “No two clients are the same. By tailoring care routines to each client, we help them maintain the look, feel, and longevity of their extensions, which in turn protects the reputation of both the stylist and the brand.
“Every client should leave the salon with a clear, tailored aftercare plan based on their extension type, hair
When they know exactly what to do and why it matters, they’re much more likely to take care of their hair properly.
needs, and lifestyle. This plan includes recommended products, a care routine, and a follow-up appointment schedule. When they know exactly what to do and why it matters, they’re much more likely to take care of their hair properly.”
Darren Cunningham, co-owner of The Secret Garden, emphasised the importance of personalised aftercare and noted, “Offering tailored advice ensures
that every client receives guidance suited to their unique needs, which helps them maintain beautiful, naturallooking extensions for longer, catering to individual hair types, different application methods, lifestyles, and styling habits.”
The best maintenance will always start with great home care, and Katy Grimshaw, founder of Spectrum One Hair Extensions, shared, “It’s a no-
brainer; your client should always be purchasing aftercare products from you, as it’s what’s going to guarantee the quality and lifespan of their hair and hair extensions.
“I would always recommend my clients to sleep with a silk bonnet or pillowcase and avoid tying the hair up with tight hair ties and use soft silk scrunchies instead. We’d also recommend clients to avoid swimming, hard water and sun creams, and all of these contribute to fading colour.”
It’s important to note that caring for hair extensions differs greatly from typical hair care. Victoria Lynch, founder of Remi Cachet, discusses their haircare range designed to protect the longevity of human hair extensions. Victoria noted, “All Remi Cachet products are sulphate and paraben-free, a must for maintaining the quality, and are gentle on the hair, leaving it clean, fresh, and rejuvenated after every wash.”
Continuing with the importance of aftercare ingredients, Katy also highlights the importance of clients using products with high amounts of moisture and low amounts of protein. “Adding extra protein onto the hair extensions does no favours because the hair isn’t damaged. This can have an adverse effect, causing the hair to break and snap. With that in mind, it’s simple to see why you should be focused on retaining the moisture levels in the hair over anything else.”
During any hair extensions fitting, stylists should always discuss their
HAIR EXTENSIONS
specific tips and recommendations while also encouraging the rebooking of appointments in the appropriate timeframe to ensure their hair extensions always look and feel their best, this is usually between eight to ten weeks from the last appointment. Victoria shared her top tip for maintaining extensions and shared, “I would advise clients to always blow dry their hair after washing, focusing on ensuring the roots are dry as quickly as possible so the tape adhesive is not left wet for too long, as this can weaken its strength.”
Post-treatment plans can also be the perfect top-up to salon retail; when the extensions have been recently
fitted, this is the opportunity to entice clients to make this look last for longer. Darren noted, “We take time to share how to use the products properly, educating the client so they can look after their hair at home. This helps build trust in the salon’s expertise, creating a sense of loyalty. Clients who are satisfied with the products they use will return for future extensions and refer others, further supporting our retail sales and creating long-term relationships.”
By educating clients on the benefits of using the right products, salons position themselves as trusted professionals, with recommendations becoming part of the service, rather than an upsell. Over time, this builds loyalty, repeat visits, and increased basket spend. Aftercare is not just about product; it’s a longterm strategy for growing the client relationship and the business.
Embracing Natural Textures
Looking for statement ways to style curly and coily hair? Denman brushes are on hand with a standout edgy faux hawk for a look that truly turns heads!
Top Tips:
1. To prep the hair before styling detangle using flexible brush such as the Denman D38 Detangling and Styling Paddle and a leave-in conditioner.
2. Make sure that you carefully define the curls with a polished pin brush such as the Denman D143 and curl enhancing cream.
3. Gently dry on slow speed or use a diffuser to avoid over-drying and frizz.
Tools Used:
Denman D38 Detangling & Styling Paddle
Denman D143 5 Row Original Styler Denman D91 Backcomber Brush.
This high impact faux hawk is a brilliant way to harness the beauty of natural curls. Curly and coily hair embraces so many opportunities and this beautiful rounded bob has been transformed into an edgy faux hawk. Make sure that the hair is well moisturised to protect the innate fragility in this hair type; you can either use a treatment at the backwash or
work through the hair with a moisturising cream. Overhandling the hair can cause the curls to frizz so extra moisture is a must. Take care that the tension at the hairline isn’t too strong and avoid unnecessary tugging to ensure that there is no breakage. Sweeping these amazing natural curls to the crown delivers a high impact style – perfect!

Step one
On clean, conditioned hair carefully work in sections around the head to detangle and prep the hair with a curl enhancing cream using a Denman D38 Detangling & Styling Paddle brush.
Step four
Working around the hairline use a narrow stiff brush such as the Denman D91 Backcomber and a gel and brush up the first 2-3cm of hair to create lift.
Step three
Gently dry the hair on a low speed and heat to build volume, minimise handling of the hair to preserve the natural spirals.
Step two Step five
At the sides begin sweeping the hair up to the sides of the crown, at the top of the head from temple to nape with the Denman D91 Backcomber and gel. Repeat the motion to create a super smooth finish.
Work through the head using a Denman D143 5 Row Original Styler and a curl definition technique to help the spirals really stand out through the hair.
Step six
Secure with a line of grips. Use the pintail comb to lift out and create the final shape and cover the grips. Repeat for the other side. Finish with a light curl cream or shine spray to add definition to the curl.
Turn Learning into Earning
Salons across the country acknowledge the shortage of new talent in the industry, but they also understand that hiring apprentices is the most effective way to train job-ready staff. Kleek Apprenticeships asked some of their regular employers how they utilize their apprentices to unlock profits or gain efficiencies across their businesses.
With margins tight and the industry facing numerous constraints, it’s difficult to fully appreciate the benefits of supporting the next generation in the industry. Yet, there are tangible advantages to building your team, including improved employee retention and opportunities for professional development. By fostering new talent and investing in the future growth of your salon, you can address skills gaps and gain fresh perspectives.
Susan Flintoff, owner of Hair Secrets in Northallerton shared her experience. “Apprentices are the future and represent a valuable investment for my business. Many of my apprentices have trained with me and stayed for 6-8 years on average – my current manager has been with me for 10 years now!
“We maximize return on investment by planning ahead and considering how we can make the most of our skills. We have a Blow-Dry Club for unlimited blow-drys per month, and the blow-drys are delivered by our learners, allowing us more time on cutting and complex techniques. Apprentices can quickly assist with root and simple colours too, again freeing up time. Our regular clientele enjoy supporting the next generation in this way too.”
Karen Harvey of Keith Graham Hairdressing in Cliftonville in Kent agrees, “Apprentices are the lifeblood of a salon. An apprentice’s wage is justifiable as you’re gaining an extra pair of hands that allows senior staff to concentrate on the higher grossing services. It all helps to make a complete salon and a happy
one too. There is also a sense of pride in developing your own staff and nurturing the next generation.
“Recently, during a very busy period, we had a request for Dutch braids for a special occasion. Our apprentice jumped into action, practised over a couple of days and smashed it on the day! Freeing up other staff and helping ensure we didn’t turn business away too!“
For her most recent cohort of apprentices, Clare Adamson at Taylor Wood Hair Spa in Darlington adopted a similar strategy of prioritising the services that can be learned and put into practice more quickly.
Clare explained, “My advice is to adopt a nurturing, encouraging
environment. Our apprentices grew quickly in confidence as they gained practical experience and benefitted from the total dedication of their salon employer and employees. We prioritise training and ongoing development and reap the benefits across the whole team.”
Apprentices often bring useful social media knowledge and skills with them too - a valuable asset to a salon looking to gain new followers and clients, and to promote all the great work being produced.

Comfort is Key
Now, waxing is maybe the last treatment to be described as comfortable, yet, with the help of Harley Waxing, we explore the best types of wax to enhance comfort for sensitive skin and what you, as the therapist, can do to help clients achieve superior results.
Waxing can often get a bad reputation when it comes to sensitive skin, but the truth is that with the right techniques, using a high-quality wax, and proper pre- and aftercare, it can be both effective and gentle on any skin type. It also offers the benefit of being a natural exfoliant, removing dead skin cells along with the hair, helping make the skin softer and smoother. Consistent waxing means the hair grows back finer and sparser, which helps reduce discomfort over time.
Choosing between hot wax and strip wax when it comes to hair removal depends on the skin type of the client and the treatment areas. Strip wax is applied in a thin layer and removed using paper strips, which is great for getting rid of hairs on the larger parts of the body. Hot wax, on the other hand, is applied thicker to the smaller areas, such as the face and intimate areas. Since it adheres to the hair and not the skin, it only pulls out the hair when removed, helping reduce discomfort and redness. For clients with sensitive skin, using a high-quality wax like Harley hot wax can make all the difference. It is designed
to be gentle while effectively removing hair. Making it the perfect choice for any sensitive skin.
Proper preparation and aftercare are key to protecting sensitive skin during waxing. Advising your clients before the treatment can be beneficial, including asking them to exfoliate and moisturise 48 hours before in preparation. Making sure they are aware of the guidelines, such as no exfoliation or lotions for 24 hours before and no heat exposure or tight clothing for up to 24 hours after. For you, the therapist, using the correct pre- and aftercare products can help give superior results. Before any waxing treatment, the skin should be prepped to ensure it is dry, clean, and free from any oils to ensure the best results. Start
your treatment by using ‘Harley Cleanser & Toner, which effectively removes any dirt and oils, meaning the skin is ready. Using Harley Pre Waxing oil after this will help create a protective barrier over the skin, making it more gentle and reducing discomfort when removing hot wax. To finish the treatment, using a nourishing aftercare oil such as Harley After Wax Oil will help calm any irritated skin and lock in moisture.
At Harley Wax, we have formulated our Hot Wax with the highest quality ingredients and a low melting point to ensure a gentle yet effective treatment. This means you can offer a comfortable waxing experience for every skin type, no matter how delicate.

Film Star’s Big Cut
The award-winning actor and producer, Natalie Dormer, is the latest famous face to help The Little Princess Trust give wigs to children with hair loss. Here we find out why she wanted to help the charity.
Known for her work in The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones, Natalie donated her beautiful long locks to the charity after needing a significant hair cut for her latest film role as renowned pediatric oncologist, Dr Audrey Evans, in Audrey’s Children.
The film hit cinema screens in the US at the end of March and shows how Dr Evans battled sexism and medical conventions to develop revolutionary treatments in children’s cancer treatment and co-founded the first Ronald McDonald House, impacting millions worldwide.
Natalie was asked to cut her hair to portray Dr Evans in the film and then set about researching The Little Princess Trust to ensure her donation could be put to good use.
Her long locks have now made their way to the charity’s Hereford headquarters and, having been sorted and placed with other ponytails matching Natalie’s hair colour, will soon be sent on to wig-knotters.
Natalie follows Harry Styles, Jessie J and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, in donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust – along with many other brilliant and selfless people from all walks of life who help the charity provide around 2,000 wigs to children and young people every year.
in the UK, all of us at The Little Princess Trust are very aware of Dr Evans and her incredible work.
Natalie shared, “I am deeply inspired by the work of The Little Princess Trust. The charity deserves to be a household name, as indeed does the intrepid and dedicated Dr Audrey Evans.”
The Little Princess Trust is also proud to fund childhood cancer research –and has now supported more than 150 projects seeking to find kinder and more effective treatments for all pediatric cancers.
Phil Brace, from The Little Princess Trust, shared, “As one of the UK’s largest funders of childhood cancer research
“Just like Dr Evans, we want to do all we can to improve the lives of children and young people with cancer and that is why we continue to support scientists who are leading the way in researching pediatric cancers.”
Mr Brace continued, “I must also thank Natalie for her kind donation of hair. It is greatly appreciated and will be a big help to us as we continue to provide real hair wigs to children and young people.”

Brow Game Strong
As the fastest-growing brow brand in the UK with a rapidly expanding global customer base, Buff Browz’s focus goes beyond simply producing wonderful products. We touched base with Georgie, founder of Buff Browz, and discussed their unwavering commitment to unmatchable quality and product innovation.
With our brand built on a strong, talented community of brow technicians who are integral to everything we do, their expertise and passion drive us forward, making our brand not just a product line but a community within the industry.
As a brand, our ultimate goal is to make products accessible and wearable for everyone, regardless of individual style, skin type, or needs. Over 30 new products are currently in development and will be coming to market within the next year, alongside a new free training platform. As a founder, I’m focused on continuous growth, building on the foundation we’ve made over the last five years, and ensuring that the best practice brow care remains at the forefront of the beauty industry.
After starting my journey over a decade ago, offering brow treatments in my front room at home, I soon realised that none of the products available fully met my clients’ needs. This is when I decided to take matters into my own hands, and as the saying goes, “the rest is history.” It turns out so many other
professionals needed what Buff Browz could offer too, and I’ve never looked back!
With brow products, there’s no “one shade fits all,” which is why we offer a variety and maintain a high quality across the range. Through thorough ingredient development, all products are suitable for all skin types, tones, and preferences, crafted for the professional but still easy for consumers to enjoy.
In a busy industry, it is our products that truly speak for themselves and do most of the work in helping us stand out. Another standout factor for us as a brand is brand transparency; we’re really not trying to be something we’re not. Our focus is simply to be a reliable provider
for all things brows and beauty. Our community is also made up of the best of the best. With a group of incredibly talented individuals who share the same passion for Buff Browz that we do here at HQ, and we don’t take any of that for granted, we celebrate their work, successes, and achievements just as much as our own.
For readers looking to work with us, it really couldn’t be easier. Our products are accessible to everyone, and if you’re an existing customer looking to join our elite tech community, just reach out to our community manager. We love to collaborate and help grow both your business and brow game.

The Fellowship Focus
Welcome to our regular Fellowship Focus, where we go behind the scenes to find out what exciting projects the Fellowship has been up to over the previous month!
West Suffolk College EXPO
The Fellowship Connects & West Suffolk College EXPO invited college students and partnering brands to showcase the very best that hairdressing and barbering has to offer. Held within the state-of-theart facilities at Bury Sy Edmunds West Suffolk College, the Expo event was an opportunity for Fellowship proteges and local artists to showcase their work, their journey in hairdressing and allow those attending the chance to find out more about the connection between the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and West Suffolk College.
The event kicked off with a welcome
from the Head of Academy of Hair and Beauty Studies at West Suffolk College, Marnie Williams, who gave insight into the relationship between the Academy and the Fellowship, alongside the opportunities are available for students. Marnie then introduced her co-host for the day, Fellowship for British Hairdressing President Ashleigh Hodges. Marnie and Ashleigh invited two West Suffolk College alumni to the stage to showcase their work, Rachael Jennings and Lucy Wilding, who shared how their time at the college has enabled them to progress through their own personal career and pathway.
Next up, Marnie and Ashleigh invited
former students of West Suffolk College, Connor Chesterton and Oli Norman to the stage to showcase the barbering aspect of what the College has to offer. Connor was also on Project Men & Media in 2024, discussing with Ashleigh about how he has integrated his Fellowship experience into his working life whilst working on his model. Marnie chatted with Oli about how he has grown and developed from his time at the college, winning awards and owning his own barber shop, along with explaining the inspiration he used for his look.
Rachael Lomax, otherwise known as the Copper Queen and Molly Raynor, who was an award-winning student at
West Suffolk College and part of the Club Star Art Team in 2024 took to the stage to share their tips and any advice they would give to someone starting out in the industry and how they found their niche as educators.
To round up the EXPO event, Ashleigh and Marnie welcomed award-winning stylist and ClubStar Art Team Leader, Sophie-Rose Goldsworthy to stage with members of the 2025 ClubStar Art Team – Yasmin Snowdon, D’arcy White, Yasmin Clifford, Amelia Krasinski, Tash Filip, Amelia Wilmott, Leah Barker, and Isabella Finnis. On stage, the team demonstrated their braiding skills and styling skills as they talked the audience through what they were doing. They also discussed what it’s like to be on the ClubStar Art Team and the opportunities that the Fellowship have given them so far – and of course, their excitement for their stage slot at HAIRCON!
Ashleigh Hodges, President of the Fellowship said, “The talent showcased by the artists was absolutely incredible – I was lost for words. The annual West Sufffolk College EXPO is an amazing opportunity for the college and the Fellowship to demonstrate what we can offer to the students as it’s crucial that we nurture and help to develop the future generation of talent.”
The event came to a close with thanks from Marnie and Ashleigh, and a round of applause for all the artists.
Concept Learner of the Year
Concept Learner of the Year 2025 shone a spotlight on the UK’s most promising
hairdressing and barbering students. The competition provides a national platform for up-and-coming hairdressers and barbers to showcase their creativity across a wide range of categories, including barbering, hair-up, styling, colouring, textured hair and avant-garde.
During the 2025 final, the atmosphere at Telford College on the 20th of March was electric, with 54 finalists from across the country coming together to flaunt their skill and artistry. ClubStar Art Team Members, Amelia Krasinki from KH Hair and Yasmin Snowden from Versus Hair Team worked on stage alongside Fellowship Vice-President Michelle Griffin and Fellowship Youth Board Members, Olivia Brady, who mentored the project through their very first live stage demonstration. The team showcased various method of installing hair extensions and were given the
opportunity to work through their looks in-front of a live audience. The team answered questions from the guests and shared with them their experiences as part of a fellowship Project Team.
The Fellowship Youth Board members, Olivia Rose Brady, Jordan Heyes and Molly Raynor were on hand to answer questions about the Fellowship –discussing their Fellowship journey so far, the opportunities that they’ve been given and how the Fellowship has helped to share and expand their career and skills set.
As well as partnering and taking part in the event, the Fellowship for British Hairdressing Foundation Award was awarded to Condola Dennis from Walsall College. The Award was presented by Fellowship Hair President, Ashleigh Hodges.
Condola Dennis said, “When I was announced as the Fellowship Foundation Award winner, I thought I was dreaming! I had worked so hard and put in a lot of effort and time into my preparation - so to have been recognised openly and publicly was a dream come true. I would like to say a massive thank you to Ashleigh and the judges, the Fellowship team, the sponsors, and everyone for this opportunity!”
Ashleigh Hodges comments, “It was an absolute honour to present the Fellowship for British Hairdressing Foundation Award. What an incredible day – the level of talent that was demonstrated was truly breath-taking. To see the amount of time, effort and dedication that went into each entry was truly special.”
Sustainability Solutions
This month, Green Libertines Zoë Rees and Jen Gaia share specific certifications to look out for when stocking and using sustainable brands within your salon.
By Zoë Rees, Bliss Hair
@bliss_sustainablesalonTherapy.
A really important step towards being a sustainable salon or stylist is to choose to collaborate with like-minded brands. This will not only boost your credibility with your clients but also contribute positively to the environment. Here’s how…
There are so many sustainable brands out there, and it’s good to research the ones that are right for you. A simple way to do your research is to check the certifications and accreditations the brand has. This will reassure you that the brand is taking genuine steps to be sustainable.
Here are a few certifications I look out for because by choosing brands with these certifications, I know I can trust their claims, so all the hard work is done for me!
- Vegan Accreditation—A Vegan Trademark needs to meet standards of no animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
- Rainforest Alliance—They meet rigorous environmental, social, and economic standards to support sustainability and biodiversity.
- Cruelty Free—The Leaping Bunny Certification The only way to be 100% sure a company is cruelty-free.
Jen Gaia, The Curl Specialist Bournemouth
Coming into hairdressing later in life meant I could see the industry with fresh eyes. It didn’t take long to realise how wasteful and polluting it can be. From day one, I knew I wanted to do things differently. Here’s how I use product labelling to make better choices for people and the planet:
Palm Oil—Palm oil farming clears land, destroys habitats, and often exploits workers in already struggling countries. There is the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certification that ensures no new land is deforested to make way for new palm plantations when creating beauty products.
100% PCR Plastic—Post-consumer recycled plastic means the bottle has already had a life before. Using it helps reduce new plastic production and supports a circular economy. Most cosmetics are made using this and can be anywhere from 10% to 100% PCR.
Soil Association Certified—It’s not just about veggies and allotments! This UK certification guarantees organic ingredients, ethical sourcing, and sustainable packaging through a vigorous process.
B-Corp— These brands commit to transparency, fairness, and sustainability across every area of their business from people to planet. Certified B Corporations are leaders in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.
These logos help me run a salon that genuinely cares and where every choice reflects the world I want to live in.
