West Liberty University (WLU), a public coeducational school and West Virginia’s oldest institution of higher education, is situated on 290 hilltop acres in a rural setting just an hour from Pittsburgh. A satellite campus located at The Highlands Shopping Complex sits adjacent to Interstate 70, minutes from the Pennsylvania and Ohio borders in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Established in 1837, more than 2,300 students are enrolled.
Elementary education and secondary education are the most selected majors but WLU offers more than 70 academic majors in its five Colleges: the Gary E. West College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Arts and Communication, the College of Education, and the College of Sciences. West Liberty also offers numerous graduate programs in a variety of disciplines along with degree completion programs for nontraditional students. Students both commute and live in residence halls on campus.
One of the more recent additions to the campus infrastructure is the Campbell Hall of Health Sciences. The 72,000 square-foot multi-story building united the university’s science and health care majors – Dental Hygiene, Physician Assistant Studies, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Speech Pathology/Audiology, and Chemistry – under one roof.
There is a strong athletic tradition at West Liberty. The men’s basketball team has won 14 national scoring titles, earned 12 consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament bids and advanced to six NCAA Division II Elite Eights – including a run to the 2014 national championship game! Hilltopper football made history in 2009 and 2010 as the only NCAA Division II team ever to lead the nation in scoring and total offense in consecutive seasons and the West Liberty baseball team won the 1964 NAIA national championship!
Grammy Award-winning country music singer-songwriter Brad Paisley is one of many distinguished Hilltopper alumni. The WLU website is www.westliberty.edu, Twitter feed is wlumedia and Facebook account is www.facebook.com/westliberty.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
ASRC -Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex-
The 145,000-square foot Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex celebrated its 20th anniversary during the 2019-20 academic year and remains one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II multi-purpose athletic facilities.
The 1,200-seat arena serves as the home of West Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and acrobatics & tumbling teams and has been selected to host multiple NCAA Division II regional championship events for wrestling and men’s basketball over the past two decades.
With three Mondo surface basketball courts, a 160-meter indoor track, a well-equipped fitness center, a conference center, full athletic training facilities, administrative offices and numerous classrooms, the facility is a hub of campus activity throughout the year.
Renamed in 2014 to honor the generosity of WLU alumni Gary and Flip West, a brandnew MondoTurf playing surface installed in 2019 is merely the latest in a series of recent upgrades that have transformed West Liberty’s football home into an NCAA Division II showcase.
The new turf follows hot on the heels of the installation of new grandstand seating and a press box upgrade and expansion to provide full radio/TV broadcast capability along with wireless internet service for all working media.
West Family Stadium’s impressive lighting system along with the enhanced landscaping and design elements have all worked together to make the 4,000-seat facility one of the region’s elite gridiron venues and a popular choice for the Mountain East Conference’s “Thursday Night Lights” television package.
West Family Stadium
West Family Athletic Complex
Fueled by another generous gift from Gary and Flip West, the West Family Athletic Complex made a smashing debut in 2019 as the state-of-the-art home for WLU’s men’s and women’s soccer, track and cross-country squads.
Featuring a fully-lighted artificial turf soccer field surrounded by a full 8-lane all-weather track built to NCAA specifications, the sparkling green jewel immediately took its place among the top multi-purpose facilities in the region.
With the addition of the West Family Athletic Complex, the Hilltopper track teams can now practice and host meets on campus for the first time in school history. It also allowed the soccer teams to give their student-athletes more time in the classroom by scheduling select contests at night.
6 2022-23 Women's Basketball Media Guide
The WLU Softball Complex has been hailed as one of the premier NCAA Division II softball facilities in the region ever since its 2010 debut and was chosen as the host site for the 2019 NCAA D2 Atlantic Region I Tournament. Located adjacent to West Family Stadium, the softball complex is completely enclosed and affords fans a great view of the action from the elevated bleachers.
Other features include modern dugouts, a pro-style backstop, large electronic scoreboard, full-size dual batting cages and an independent irrigation system.
WLU Softball Complex
Kovalick Field
Honoring the memory of WLU Hall of Famer George Kovalick, Kovalick Field is home to one of the region’s most tradition-laden baseball programs.
Situated in a natural amphitheater with raised bleacher seating, the stadium features a natural grass playing surface with a large electronic scoreboard located in right field.
Modern dugouts complete with safety railings and a new press box are recent additions, making Kovalick Field one of the MEC’s top baseball venues.
Honoring the memory of legendary West Liberty coach and athletic director H. Edgar Martin, the Martin Tennis Complex has been recognized as one of the region’s premier college tennis facilities for years.
The Martin Tennis Complex is also open for recreational play to students, faculty, staff and the public.

BELMONT SAVINGS BANK PRACTICE FACILITY
Fueled by a generous lead gift from Belmont Savings Bank, this massive 14,400-square foot vinyl covered steel frame structure is one of the most eye-catching recent additions to the university’s facility lineup.
Located adjacent to the WLU Softball Complex, the BSB Practice Facility measures 120 x 120 feet. It is fully heated and insulated so that its artificial turf playing surface can provide an upgraded practice experience for all WLU athletic teams throughout the year.

PANHANDLE PERFORMANCE ZONE
The latest addition to West Liberty’s athletic facilities is a true game-changer. Kick-started by leadership gifts from Gary E. West and Herman “Bucky” Kopf and driven by in-kind construction services from Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration, the Panhandle Performance Zone takes WLU’s strength and conditioning to the next level.
A significant upgrade and expansion of the university’s aging weight room, the Panhandle Performance Zone is anchored by a 20-yard SporTurf training section for advanced speed, agility and plyometric training.
An 18mm Mondo reflex/hybrid response flooring system supports more than six tons of brand-new Troy weight plates, 18 Mondo Deck lifting platforms, 16 Stray Dog posterior chain machines and two full sets of Iron Grip dumbbells ranging from 5-130 pounds. The ultra-modern facility can accommodate as many as 60 student-athletes at the same time.

2022 Season Preview
After leading West Liberty women’s basketball to its second 21-win season and Top 10 Atlantic Region ranking in the last three full seasons, sixth-year head coach Kyle Cooper and his Hilltoppers look to carry that momentum into the 2022-23 campaign.
Four returning starters form the core of a highpowered attack that lit up the scoreboard at an 82.3 ppg. clip year ago – No. 2 behind only national champion and MEC rival Glenville State among all NCAA Division II schools – but Cooper thinks the Black and Gold have even more in the tank.
“That’s definitely a pace we want to continue to play at but as a coaching staff, we’re pretty greedy,” he said with a smile. “We’d like to crank it up even another notch. We know how good this roster can be and we’re going to keep pushing them. When you look at this team from a standpoint of talent, depth, and athleticism, I believe we are in a really good place for success.”
With eight returning letterwinners and six impressive newcomers, the cupboard is far from bare on the hilltop but Cooper and his veteran staff do have a couple of holes to fill after graduation claimed record-setting AllAmerican point guard Audrey Tingle and a key reserve in 6-3 post Molly Bauer. Tingle remains with the program as a student assistant coach while working toward a graduate degree.
A first-team All-MEC and All-Atlantic Region selection who was also honored as the NCAA Division II National Academic All-American of the Year, the 5-6 Tingle averaged a doubledouble (14.1 ppg., 10.5 rpg. and 7.1 assists/game) while setting an NCAA Division II single-season record with six triple-doubles. Bauer provided quality minutes off the bench at both ends of the court, ranking among the MEC leaders with 53 blocked shots while shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor.
"Audrey has been with (associate head coach) Cassie (Seth) and I since the beginning of our time together at West Liberty and we’re thrilled to have her back as a coach,” Cooper said. “Not only did she earn this opportunity, I can't imagine competing without her filling some significant role. Molly came to us as a graduate transfer last year and immediately fit in as a key contributor and valued member of the Hilltopper family."
All four returning starters averaged doublefigures a year ago in an up-tempo Hilltopper offense that ranked among the top 3-point shooting teams in the nation but was also more than capable of doing damage in the paint. Corinne Thomas returns for her fourth season on the hardwood. The 5-9 junior guard started every game and was voted first-team All-MEC after averaging 14.0 points and 5.9 rebounds a night. Her 93 3-point bombs ranked No. 4 nationally. “Corrine continues to be a leader and just a phenomenal all-around player,” said Cooper. “She understands the game so well and in turn that elevates the play of everybody st Arriana Manzay is also back after emerging as a potent force on the low blocks. The 6-3 frontliner averaged 12.1 points and 7.2 rebounds a game while ranking No. 3 nationally in fieldgoal percentage (136-209, .651) – highlighted by a school-record 11-of-11 showing against Ohio Dominican. Manzay had 19 double-figure scoring games and three double-doubles last season. “Arri is a big-time athlete with a terrific combination of size and speed,” Cooper said. “She’s coming off a great season and we’re excited to see what she has in store for us.”
Another deadly 3-point shooter, Karly McCutcheon is the Hilltoppers’ fourth returning starter. After averaging 13.4 ppg. and draining 76 3-pointers a year ago, the 5-9 sophomore is coming off a strong preseason. “Karly continues to make strides, but now we have seen her make her biggest jump yet,” Cooper said. “We think she could have a really big year.”

Grace Faulk, an experienced 5-9 junior guard, is a 3-year letter-winner who averaged nearly 23 minutes a game off the bench last season while contributing 7.6 points a night. “Grace has made great progress in her consistency and owning her role more,” Cooper said. “Her experience and court sense are valuable assets.”
Anna Lucarelli, a 5-8 point guard, is back for her sophomore season and looks to be at full strength after battling through a series of injuries in her freshman campaign. “We’re really excited about Anna,” Cooper said. “She is evolving as a point guard who really is a servant leader. Having a servant leader point guard who truly understands the system with the offensive power that we have, that’s a true luxury as a coach.”
Returning sophomores Paige Julian, a 5-8 guard, and Jenna Riccardo, a 5-11 post, each missed time with injuries a year ago. “Paige and Jenna are starting to understand and own their roles,” Cooper said. “A big part of it for them is getting and staying healthy.
There are six new faces on the WLU roster for the 2022-23 season. Two of them are collegiate transfers with four arriving on the hilltop fresh out of high school.
The transfers are Natalija Sekulovska, a 5-11 sophomore guard from NCAA Division I Duquesne, and Sonia Sarda, a 5-6 graduate transfer point guard from NCAA Division II Seton Hill (Pa.). Sekulovska, who played on the Macedonia U-20 National Team in the FIBA European Challengers Tournament, saw action in 16 games for the Dukes last year while Sarda, a native of Spain, averaged 8.0 ppg. and dished out a team-high 106 assists with the Griffins last season.
“Natalija is a very gifted athlete with length and athleticism,” Cooper said. “As she grows more confident within our system, she can be quite
a weapon for us. Sonia was an All-Conference guard at Southern Nazarene before transferring to Seton Hill and competing against many of the best teams in our region. Her veteran experience and leadership have been welcome additions in the preseason.”
Cooper is also very high on his four incoming freshmen. Olivia Baker is a 5-8 All-State guard who averaged 15.6 ppg. as a senior for No. 1-ranked Shelby (Ohio) High School; Bailey Beckstedt is a 5-7 All-Ohio guard who was a four-year starter at two-time state runner-up Sheridan (Ohio) High School; Gracie Lyon is a 6-1 post who was voted District IV Player of the year after averaging 17.7 points and 11.3 rebounds as a senior at Navarre (Ohio) Fairless High School while Halley Smith is a 5-8 All-State guard who averaged 20.2 ppg. for state-ranked Frankfort (W.Va.) High School.
“We’re incredibly excited about our freshmen,” Cooper said. “Not only were all four 1,000-point scorers in high school, they’re great fits for who we are and what we do both on and off the court at West Liberty. They have been quality additions to the program and the university.”
Cooper and Seth will once more be joined on the sidelines by assistants Robbie Bonar and Dr. Douglas Swartz with Tingle completing the coaching brain trust. Associate head coach Seth enters her sixth year as a key member of Cooper’s staff. “I continue to be very lucky and fortunate to keep Coach Seth here,” said Cooper. “She makes me a lot better and our program a lot better.”
The West Liberty women open the season on Nov. 11-12 in the MEC/PSAC Challenge at the University of Charleston.

Coaches
Ullom, Cooper took the reins when Ullom stepped down to accept the role of full-time athletic director. West Liberty went 82-45 (.646) during Cooper’s four years as an assistant with three 20win seasons.
Back-to-back MEC titles in 2015 and 2016 highlighted that run. The aforementioned 2016 squad set a school record by going 29-5 and spent the entire season ranked in the USA Today coaches’ Top 25, finishing at No. 18 after the first “Sweet 16” run in school history.
Cooper caught the coaching bug during his days as a student at West Virginia University. He served as assistant head manager and basketball camp counselor for Coach John Beilein’s Elite 8 and Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament men’s basketball teams during Cooper’s first two years at WVU (2005-06).
Heading into his sixth season as head women’s basketball coach at West Liberty University, Kyle Cooper is looking to build on the momentum of another 21-win season that saw the Hilltoppers rank near the top of the national charts in several offensive categories.
Cooper’s 2021-22 squad just missed its second NCAA Division II Tournament berth in the past four seasons. The Black and Gold notched a third-place finish in the 12-team Mountain East Conference during the regular season and finished with a 21-9 mark after falling in the MEC Tournament semifinals to eventual tournament champion Charleston.
There was no lack of bright spots in the postseason report. Cooper’s high-powered offense ranked No. 2 in the nation with an average of 82.3 ppg. while also ranking among the Top 10 nationally in field goal percentage, 3-point field goals and 3-point field goals/game. All-American point guard Audrey Tingle made national headlines with an NCAA Division II season record 6 triple-doubles and was the only NCAA woman at any level to finish the year with 300+ rebounds and 200+ assists. Tingle was also honored as the 2022 NCAA Division II Academic All-American of the Year for women’s basketball.
Cooper (75-61, .551) is no stranger to sideline success. After four years as lead assistant for the WLU women under legendary head coach Lynn
The Waterford, Pa. native spent the next four years (2007-10) as head student manager and graduate assistant for Coach Mike Carey with the WVU women’s basketball team. The WVU women advanced to post-season play all four years, earning three trips to the NCAA Tournament and a WNIT berth.
Cooper left Morgantown in 2010 to serve as Director of Women’s Basketball Operations for head coach Semeka Randall at Ohio University. He spent one season with the Lady Bobcats before accepting an assistant coaching position at Wheeling Jesuit and came to West Liberty after two years at WJU.
Cooper graduated summa cum laude from WVU in 2008 with dual bachelor’s degrees in Sport Management and Athletic Coaching Education along with a minor in Business Administration. He earned a master’s degree from WVU in Educational Leadership with a focus on Higher Education in 2010.
Kyle and his wife, Katie, are a West Liberty family as Katie is the university's Director of Financial Aid. They live in Wellsburg, W.Va. with their children, Brody and Cali.

Associate Head Coach: Cassie Seth
Associate head coach Cassie Seth tips off her sixth year on the West Liberty sidelines as a key member of Coach Kyle Cooper’s women’s basketball staff. Seth also serves as the university's Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee (ADID). Drawing on her extensive playing, coaching and administrative experience at multiple institutions, she is West Liberty’s primary contact and conduit for sharing diversity and inclusionrelated information from the NCAA and Mountain East Conference with the university's nearly 500 student-athletes.
Highlights of Seth’s first five seasons on the hilltop include a pair of 21-win campaigns and a 201819 NCAA Tournament bid. The Hilltoppers just missed a second NCAA Tournament bid during the 2021-22 season, finishing third in the 12-team Mountain East Conference only to fall to eventual MEC Tournament champion Charleston in the MEC Tournament semifinals.
West Liberty’s 21-9 record in 2021-22 was the program’s best since the 2015-16 Sweet 16 team posted a program-record 29-5 mark. Last year’s Hilltoppers scored at an 82.3 ppg. clip, second in the nation only to national champion Glenville State. The WLU women also ranked among the Top 10 nationally in field goal percentage, 3-point
field goals and 3-point field goals/game.
Seth came to West Liberty off a successful season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III BaldwinWallace University. Working for Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Cheri Harrer, Seth helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a 21-5 record and a runner-up finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Before breaking into the collegiate ranks at Baldwin-Wallace, Seth spent seven years as a high school head coach in the Cleveland area. Seth guided Medina Highland to its first-ever OHSAA Division I tournament win before moving on to Parma High School, where she was the first coach in more than two decades to post double-digit wins in consecutive seasons.
During her time as a high school coach, Seth developed 32 all-conference players, five alldistrict selections and one conference player of the year. She was chosen to coach in the 2010 Medina County All-Star Game and the 2016 Greater Cleveland Basketball Coaches Association (GCBCA) All-Star Game.
The Waterford, Pa. native was a four-year standout and 1,000-point scorer during her playing days at Mercyhurst (Pa.). A three-year captain and AllGLIAC honoree, she finished her career ranked among the Lakers’ Top 10 all-time in points and steals. Just as successful in the classroom, Seth was a two-time Dean's List student and earned a spot on the GLIAC’s All-Academic Team.
She holds a bachelor's degree in Business with a concentration in Sport Business Management from Mercyhurst along with a master's degree in Sports Administration from Valparaiso (Ind.). Seth also holds a National Council on Strength & Fitness Certified Strength Coach (NCSFCSC) credential and is a certified dotFIT fitness professional.
Seth resides in Steubenville, Ohio with her wife, Stephanie.

Student Assistant: Audrey Tingle
Record-setting NCAA All-America point guard Audrey Tingle return to the West Liberty sidelines this season in her first year as a student assistant coach with the Hilltopper women’s basketball program.
Tingle, who spent the past five seasons rewriting the West Liberty and NCAA Division II record books from her point guard spot, will help Cooper and his staff with player development, on-court instruction and film work in addition to assisting with on and off-campus recruiting, travel and game operations.
The West Lafayette, Ohio native capped her spectacular career with one of the most impressive seasons, athletically and academically, in recent memory. A first-team All-Mountain East Conference and All-Atlantic Region selection, Tingle also earned an honorable mention spot on the WBCA Coaches' All-America Team after setting an NCAA Division II season record with six triple-doubles. Her 7 career triple-doubles is tied for the most in NCAA Division II history.
The Hilltopper standout ranked third in the nation with 19 double-doubles and averaged a doubledouble for the year: 14.1 ppg., 10.5 rpg. and 7.1 assists/game. Her 212 assists and 7.1 assists/game ranked No. 2 nationally and she ranked 12th in the nation with 314 rebounds despite standing just
5-6. Tingle was the only NCAA woman at any level to post 200-plus assists and 300-plus rebounds during the regular season.
The stellar backcourter was just as impressive in the classroom. A first-team NCAA Division II Academic All-American, she was featured on the NCAA main website as the 2022 NCAA Division II Academic All-American of the Year for women's basketball. Tingle graduated with a perfect 4.00 GPA last year in Speech Pathology and Audiology and is on pace to complete her MBA – again with a perfect 4.00 GPA – at West Liberty in the first summer session. She plans to begin studying for her master's in Speech Pathology and Audiology in the second summer session.

CONFERENCE HISTORY
A charter member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when it formed in 1924, West Liberty was also part of the WVIAC’s women’s basketball program since its inception in 1981-82. The Hilltoppers won three WVIAC women’s basketball titles and claimed five WVIAC women’s tournament championships.
When the league dissolved following the 201213 season, West Liberty joined 11 other schools in forming the Mountain East Conference, which began operation in the summer of 2013. Reid Amos was appointed as the MEC's first commissioner and the conference offices were centrally located in Bridgeport, W.Va. The 2019-20 academic year saw the first changes to the MEC lineup. Charter members UVa-Wise and
Shepherd left the conference with Frostburg State (Md.) and Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) College coming into the fold. Urbana closed its doors in Spring 2020 but Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.) University came aboard later that year to keep the number of schools at 12. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke competes as an affiliate member in several sports.
The MEC crowns conference champions in a total of 22 sports: men’s/women’s basketball, men’s/ women’s cross country, men’s/women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, men’s/women’s golf, men’s/women’s soccer, men’s/women’s swimming, men’s/women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse, women’s acrobatics & tumbling, women’s softball, women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, men’s baseball, men’s football, and men’s wrestling.
