West Liberty University (WLU), a public coeducational school and West Virginia’s oldest institution of higher education, is situated on 290 hilltop acres in a rural setting just an hour from Pittsburgh. A satellite campus located at The Highlands Shopping Complex sits adjacent to Interstate 70, minutes from the Pennsylvania and Ohio borders in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Established in 1837, more than 2,300 students are enrolled.
Elementary education and secondary education are the most selected majors but WLU offers more than 70 academic majors in its five Colleges: the Gary E. West College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Arts and Communication, the College of Education, and the College of Sciences. West Liberty also offers numerous graduate programs in a variety of disciplines along with degree completion programs for nontraditional students. Students both commute and live in residence halls on campus.
One of the more recent additions to the campus infrastructure is the Campbell Hall of Health Sciences. The 72,000 square-foot multi-story building united the university’s science and health care majors – Dental Hygiene, Physician Assistant Studies, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Speech Pathology/Audiology, and Chemistry – under one roof.
There is a strong athletic tradition at West Liberty. The men’s basketball team has won 14 national scoring titles, earned 12 consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament bids and advanced to six NCAA Division II Elite Eights – including a run to the 2014 national championship game! Hilltopper football made history in 2009 and 2010 as the only NCAA Division II team ever to lead the nation in scoring and total offense in consecutive seasons and the West Liberty baseball team won the 1964 NAIA national championship!
Grammy Award-winning country music singer-songwriter Brad Paisley is one of many distinguished Hilltopper alumni. The WLU website is www.westliberty.edu, Twitter feed is wlumedia and Facebook account is www.facebook.com/westliberty.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
The 145,000-square foot Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex celebrated its 20th anniversary during the 2019-20 academic year and remains one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II multi-purpose athletic facilities.
The 1,200-seat arena serves as the home of West Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and acrobatics & tumbling teams and has been selected to host multiple NCAA Division II regional championship events for wrestling and men’s basketball over the past two decades.
With three Mondo surface basketball courts, a 160-meter indoor track, a well-equipped fitness center, a conference center, full athletic training facilities, administrative offices and numerous classrooms, the facility is a hub of campus activity throughout the year.
West Family Stadium
Renamed in 2014 to honor the generosity of WLU alumni Gary and Flip West, a brand-new MondoTurf playing surface installed in 2019 is merely the latest in a series of recent upgrades that have transformed West Liberty’s football home into an NCAA Division II showcase.
The new turf follows hot on the heels of the installation of new grandstand seating and a press box upgrade and expansion to provide full radio/TV broadcast capability along with wireless internet service for all working media.
West Family Stadium’s impressive lighting system along with the enhanced landscaping and design elements have all worked together to make the 4,000-seat facility one of the region’s elite gridiron venues and a popular choice for the Mountain East Conference’s “Thursday Night Lights” television package.
West Family Athletic Complex
Fueled by another generous gift from Gary and Flip West, the West Family Athletic Complex made a smashing debut in 2019 as the stateof-the-art home for WLU’s men’s and women’s soccer, track and crosscountry squads.
Featuring a fully-lighted artificial turf soccer field surrounded by a full 8-lane all-weather track built to NCAA specifications, the sparkling green jewel immediately took its place among the top multi-purpose facilities in the region.
With the addition of the West Family Athletic Complex, the Hilltopper track teams can now practice and host meets on campus for the first time in school history. It also allowed the soccer teams to give their student-athletes more time in the classroom by scheduling select contests at night.

ASRC -Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex-
WLU Softball Complex
The WLU Softball Complex has been hailed as one of the premier NCAA Division II softball facilities in the region ever since its 2010 debut and was chosen as the host site for the 2019 NCAA D2 Atlantic Region I Tournament.
Located adjacent to West Family Stadium, the softball complex is completely enclosed and affords fans a great view of the action from the elevated bleachers.
Other features include modern dugouts, a pro-style backstop, large electronic scoreboard, full-size dual batting cages and an independent irrigation system.
Kovalick Field
Honoring the memory of WLU Hall of Famer George Kovalick, Kovalick Field is home to one of the region’s most traditionladen baseball programs.
Situated in a natural amphitheater with raised bleacher seating, the stadium features a natural grass playing surface with a large electronic scoreboard located in right field.
Modern dugouts complete with safety railings and a new press box are recent additions, making Kovalick Field one of the MEC’s top baseball venues.
Edgar Martin Tennis Complex
Honoring the memory of legendary West Liberty coach and athletic director H. Edgar Martin, the Martin Tennis Complex has been recognized as one of the region’s premier college tennis facilities for years.
The Martin Tennis Complex is also open for recreational play to students, faculty, staff and the public.

BELMONT SAVINGS BANK PRACTICE FACILITY
Fueled by a generous lead gift from Belmont Savings Bank, this massive 14,400-square foot vinyl covered steel frame structure is one of the most eye-catching recent additions to the university’s facility lineup.
Located adjacent to the WLU Softball Complex, the BSB Practice Facility measures 120 x 120 feet. It is fully heated and insulated so that its artificial turf playing surface can provide an upgraded practice experience for all WLU athletic teams throughout the year.

PANHANDLE PERFORMANCE ZONE
The latest addition to West Liberty’s athletic facilities is a true game-changer. Kick-started by leadership gifts from Gary E. West and Herman “Bucky” Kopf and driven by in-kind construction services from Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration, the Panhandle Performance Zone takes WLU’s strength and conditioning to the next level.
A significant upgrade and expansion of the university’s aging weight room, the Panhandle Performance Zone is anchored by a 20-yard SporTurf training section for advanced speed, agility and plyometric training.
An 18mm Mondo reflex/hybrid response flooring system supports more than six tons of brand-new Troy weight plates, 18 Mondo Deck lifting platforms, 16 Stray Dog posterior chain machines and two full sets of Iron Grip dumbbells ranging from 5-130 pounds. The ultra-modern facility can accommodate as many as 60 student-athletes at the same time.

2022 Season Preview
Despite coming off a fifth straight Mountain East Conference regular season title and their third MEC Tournament championship, head coach Ben Howlett and his West Liberty University men’s basketball team aren’t looking to rest on their laurels in the 2022-23 campaign. “A lot of good things happened a year ago, but we want more for this year,” said Howlett, who heads into his sixth season at the WLU helm with the highest winning percentage (12821, .859) of any active NCAA men’s basketball coach. “We play for championships here. Anything less than that falls short of what we expect as coaches and what our fan base expects.”
Howlett’s high-powered Hilltoppers ranked No. 2 in the final NCAA D2 coaches’ poll a year ago after leading the nation in scoring for the 14th time in the last 17 seasons. The Black and Gold earned their NCAA-best 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament bid but hopes for another deep tourney run were dashed by an overtime loss in the Atlantic Region quarterfinal.
Even with last season’s early exit, West Liberty is no stranger to the national spotlight. Dating back to the 2009-10 season, the West Liberty men have the highest winning percentage (374-46, .890) in NCAA basketball.
When it comes to post-season play, the Hilltoppers have advanced to 9 of the last 12 Sweet 16s, made 6 Elite Eight trips and played in 3 Final Fours. West Liberty teams have won 6 of the last 12 Atlantic Region titles, are 24-6 all-time in Atlantic Regional play and 29-13 in NCAA Tournament action.
Once again installed as the pre-season favorite in voting by the MEC coaches, West Liberty also checked in at No. 9 when the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) released its 2022-23 preseason Top 25.
There’s a good mix of old and new on the hilltop this season. All-American Bryce Butler – the reigning Atlantic Region and MEC Player of the
Year – leads a strong returning nucleus of seven players with seven new faces rounding out the 14-man roster for a 50-50 mix.
Already a 1,000-point scorer, the 6-5 Butler averaged 18.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during his All-American season last year. The returning junior tuned up for the 202223 season over the summer by playing for Team USA’s Under-23 Team that won the FIBA 3x3 Nations League Americas title in Santo Domingo, P.R. “It has been fun seeing Bryce grow as a player and leader,” said Howlett. “He is like having another coach on the floor and knows the ins and outs of our program better than any player we ever had here.”
Malik McKinney (8.8 ppg., 57 steals) begins his fourth season in the program and will look to continue his strong play. Another 1,000-point scorer, the 6-3 senior guard has played in all but one game since 2019-20 and averaged 9.0 points per game with a 42.9% mark from beyond the arc over the previous three years. “Malik has elevated his game every year he’s been here and he’s continued that hard work heading into this season,” said Howlett.
Sophomore sharpshooter Zach Rasile (7.7 ppg., 58 3FGs) is coming off a 46% three-point shooting season. “Zach has expanded his game on the defensive side of the ball and we feel confident with him on the court in any situation,” Howlett said.
Veteran point guard Christian Montague (7.0 ppg., 3.4 apg.) returns for his second year in Black and Gold after seeing action in all 32 games a year ago. “Christian has really devoted himself to getting more familiar with our system,” Howlett said. “He’s had a very good fall.”
Ben Sarson (7.3 ppg., 4.0 rpg.), a 6-6 sophomore leaper, started 22 games a year ago and showed a knack for making his presence felt at both ends of the floor while fellow soph Austin Webb (1.9 ppg., 1.5 rpg.), a 6-3 guard, earned multiple
18 2022-23 Men's Basketball Media Guide
starts as a true freshman. Former Pennsylvania all-stater Dante Spadafora had to redshirt a year ago due to injury but is back at full speed as part of the veteran core.
“Even with the seven newcomers, we’re still a pretty mature team,” Howlett said. That maturity is a continuing theme with the new faces on the WLU roster as four of the seven are transfers that have seen success at the collegiate level. Stephen Cannady, a 6-0 guard and 1,000-point scorer, is a graduate transfer from Mercyhurst. A key figure on backto-back NCAA Tournament teams with the Lakers, he earned All-PSAC West honors as their second-leading scorer (11.5 ppg.) last season.
Alek West comes to the hilltop after two seasons at Ohio Dominican. A 6-4 junior, the All-GMAC shooting guard had 22 doublefigure scoring games a year ago while stuffing the stat sheets at a 16.0 ppg., 6.2 rpg. and 5.7 apg. clip.
Michael Sampson started every game the last two seasons at Notre Dame (Ohio). The 6-4 forward shot 63 percent (215-of-341) from the floor and ranked among MEC Top 5 in Offensive Rebounds, Defensive Rebounds and Steals while posting multiple double-doubles.
Junior college transfer Chaz Hinds, a rugged 6-8 forward, figures to add a physical presence in the paint after posting 15.1 points and 7.0 rebounds a game at Olney Central (Ill.) last year.
Howlett is expecting big things from the transfer class and likes what he’s seen in the preseason. “These guys have been working really hard to pick things up,” he said. “We expect all four to have a significant impact this year.”
A trio of freshmen round out the new faces on the Hilltoppers’ 2022-23 roster.
Finley Woodward is a 6-7 southpaw wing from Bristol, England. He was a double-figure scorer for the Scottish National U-16 Team and is coming off a strong prep year at Spire Institute. Grant Barnhart, a 6-3 guard, is a 3-time firstteam all-stater who averaged nearly 25 points a game at St. Marys (W.Va.) High School as a senior. Vidan Dronjak is a 6-6 forward from Serbia who averaged double-figures for the Serbian National U-18 Team.
The sideline crew remains intact for Coach Howlett, with assistant coaches Mike Lamberti, Dr. Aaron Huffman, and student assistant Connor Harr all returning. “I’m really appreciative of my great staff; they have a terrific relationship with the players and bleed Black and Gold,” Howlett said.
West Liberty will tip its season off inside the friendly confines of the ASRC on November 11 and 12 as part of the Atlantic Region Crossover. The MEC title defense begins on the road November 19 at Alderson Broaddus.

Coaches
West Liberty has the highest home winning percentage of any NCAA men’s basketball program over the past 14 seasons at an eyepopping 205-10 (.954) and Howlett has kept that ball rolling on multiple fronts. His Hilltoppers have gone 92-12 (.885) in MEC play, 65-6 (.915) at home and 49-8 (.860) in road games during his first five years.
West Liberty players have racked up multiple individual honors at the conference, regional and national levels during Howlett’s tenure. A pair of WLU All-Americans – Dan Monteroso and Dalton Bolon – were honored as the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Academic AllAmericans of the Year. Bolon, in fact, is the only player in conference history to sweep the MEC Male Athlete of the Year and the MEC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. West Liberty has produced at least one NCAA Division II AllAmerican in each of the past 10 seasons.
Ben Howlett hit the ground running when he took over the West Liberty University men’s basketball program six years ago and hasn’t slowed down since.
After leading his alma mater to a 29-3 record and No. 2 ranking in the final NCAA Division II coaches’ poll during the 2021-22 season, Howlett heads into his sixth season at the Hilltopper helm with a sparkling 128-21 (.859) winning percentage – tops among all NCAA Division II men’s coaches.
Howlett is coming off his second MEC Coach of the Year Award after seeing his 2021-22 powerhouse extend a number of impressive streaks. The Black and Gold rolled to their fifth straight MEC regular season title and won their fifth consecutive NCAA Division II scoring title. In addition, they earned their NCAA Division II-best 13th straight NCAA Tournament bid and pushed their run of consecutive games with a 3-point field goal to 754 games, a streak that dates back to 1999.
The winning tradition runs deep at West Liberty and Howlett has been a big part of it. Atlantic Region and MEC Player of the Year Bryce Butler and Marlon Moore Jr. became the 53rd and 54th 1,000-point scorers in nearly a century of Hilltopper basketball during the 2021-22 season. Howlett, No. 17 on that list with 1,663 points, has played with or coached 25 of those 54 players.
The 35-year-old Howlett brought an incredible track record to the position when he became the 16th head basketball coach at WLU prior to the 2017-18 season. He had served as lead assistant coach under former head man Jim Crutchfield for the previous six years, helping guide the Hilltoppers to six NCAA Division II Tournaments, five Sweet 16s, four Elite Eights, two Final Fours and the 2014 national championship game.
Howlett was a standout guard on four consecutive 20-win teams under Crutchfield from 2005-09. He was the nation’s fourth-leading scorer (23.0 ppg.) as a senior while shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor. He stayed on campus as a student assistant for the 2009-10 season, helping lead the Black and Gold to a Top 10 national ranking and their first WVIAC title in 50 years. He spent 201011 as an assistant coach at Ohio Valley University before accepting Crutchfield’s offer to return to his alma mater as an assistant coach.
Howlett resides in Wheeling with his wife, Jessica. The newlyweds celebrated their nuptials in June.

Dr. Aaron Huffman Assistant Coach
A highly-successful head coach in his own right, Dr. Aaron Huffman brings more than two decades of successful coaching experience to the West Liberty men’s basketball staff for the 12th straight year.
Working closely with head coaches Ben Howlett and Jim Crutchfield, Huffman has helped guide West Liberty to 10 conference championships, five conference tournament championships and seven NCAA Division II “Sweet 16s” along with five NCAA Division II Atlantic Region titles and “Elite Eight” National Tournament berths.
The Hilltoppers have been the highest-scoring team in the nation throughout Huffman’s time on the sidelines and are coming off their fifth straight NCAA Division II scoring title, the 14th in the past 17 seasons. During Huffman’s 11 years as an assistant, the team has posted an eye-popping 312-42 (.881) record. Huffman was named to the “50 Impactful Division II Assistants” by Silver Waves Media following the 2019-20 season.
A 3-time PAC Coach of the Year as head men’s basketball coach from 2002-08 at Bethany (W.Va.) College, Huffman went 112-53 (.679) with the Bison, leading them to three PAC regular-season titles and tournament crowns along with a trio of NCAA Division III tournament bids and an ECAC tournament berth.
Huffman began his coaching career at West Liberty as a women’s basketball assistant under current Hilltopper AD Lynn Ullom from 1999-01, helping the WLU women reel off back-to-back WVIAC regular season and tournament titles.
He spent the 2001-02 season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with West Liberty men’s coach Dan Petri before accepting the head coaching job at Bethany in 2002.
Huffman rejoined Ullom with the Hilltopper women’s team in 2008-09, helping the Black and Gold to three 20-win seasons and two NCAA Division II tournament bids before joining Coach Crutchfield’s men’s basketball staff.
A Professor of Education in the WLU College of Education and Human Performance, Huffman is a graduate of Waynesburg (Pa.) Central High School. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and a Mathematics minor. He earned his master’s in Athletic Coaching Education from WVU in 2000 and went on to earn his doctorate in Higher Education Administration from WVU in 2013, minoring in Higher Education Technology and Physical Education Teacher Education.
Huffman served as West Liberty’s Director of Athletics for the 2015-16 academic year and was WLU’s NCAA Compliance Coordinator and Athletic Facilities Building Supervisor from 2000-02. He served two separate stints as NCAA Compliance Coordinator at Bethany from 2002-04 and was Bethany’s Summer Athletic Facilities Supervisor from 2003-08. He is nationally licensed as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Huffman and his wife, Courtney, a Professor of Dental Hygiene at WLU, reside in West Liberty with their three children, Jacob, Jillian and Joshua.

Mike Lamberti Assistant Coach
Former West Liberty men’s basketball standout Mike Lamberti has established himself as one of the nation’s top young assistant coaches as he tips off his fifth season as a key member of head coach Ben Howlett’s staff on the hilltop.
Lamberti’s talents were recognized almost immediately when he was honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) with a spot on the 2019 Under Armour 30-Under-30 Team of rising young coaches. That honor followed Lamberti’s first season on the staff when he helped lead WLU to a 2019 Mountain East Conference championship and NCAA Division II Sweet 16 run.
The Hilltopper assistant has continued to build on that success with each succeeding year.
The 2019-20 West Liberty team defended its MEC crown – the program’s 10th league title in the last 11 seasons – and followed that up with an MEC Tournament championship. It marked the first regular-season and tournament sweep in MEC history. Those Hilltoppers led the nation in scoring for the third straight year, finished the season ranked in the Top 10 nationally and were preparing to host the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament when the NCAA shut down the season due to COVID-19.
West Liberty picked up where it had left off in the Mountain East Conference’s abbreviated 2021 schedule. The Hilltoppers won the MEC North Division title to earn the No. 1 seed in the MEC Tournament and were chosen to host the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. The
WLU men swept their way to another regional title – highlighted by double-digit wins against nationally-ranked Charleston and Hillsdale (Mich.) – to earn yet another trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
The 2021-22 season was yet another success story for Lamberti and the WLU men’s program. West Liberty rolled to a 29-3 record that included another MEC regular season and tournament sweep. The Hilltoppers finished the year ranked No. 2 in the nation, earned their NCAA Division IIbest 12th straight NCAA Tournament bid and won their fifth straight national scoring title.
Lamberti played in 123 games at West Liberty from 2012-16, racking up more than 700 points and 400 rebounds while dishing out nearly 200 assists. The Hilltoppers had the best record in NCAA Division II (123-14, .898) during his four seasons, claiming four conference championships and a trio of NCAA Division II Atlantic Region crowns. They played in three NCAA Division II Elite Eight national championship tournaments – including a run to the 2014 NCAA Division II national championship game.
Just as impressive in the classroom, Lamberti was honored as WLU’s Most Outstanding Finance Student when he graduated with a double-major in Finance and Accounting in 2016. He completed his master’s degree in the Science of Leadership at Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in May.
The Western Pennsylvania native served two years as a graduate assistant at Embry-Riddle, helping the Eagles complete a successful transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II affiliation, before answering Howlett's call to return to his alma mater.
Lamberti was a three-time all-stater at South Fayette (Pa.) High School, leading the Lions to the 2010 Pennsylvania state championship as a junior. He is the leading scorer in SFHS history with more than 1,700 career points.
A native of McDonald, Pa., Lamberti is married to former West Liberty women’s basketball standout Emily Bucon. The couple welcomed their first child, Vincenzo, over the summer.

Connor Harr Student Assistant
Connor Harr is back for his third season on the hilltop as a student assistant coach with West Liberty’s nationally-ranked men’s basketball program.
A Youngstown, Ohio native, Harr came to the hilltop after a season as a student assistant coach at Great Lakes Christian College in Lansing, Mich. for the 2019-20 season. Harr had spent the previous two years at Columbus (Ohio) State Community College, serving as a student manager with the CSCC men’s basketball program.
In addition, Harr gained valuable experience working for 270 Hoops, an NCAA-certified scouting service in Columbus, and worked as a credentialed NBA Draft writer/consultant for several basketball websites.
Harr graduated from Austintown (Ohio) Fitch High School in 2017, where he earned multiple letters in track and cross country. He has a twin sister, Anna, and is the son of Ann Marie and the grandson of Agnes Snitzer.

Conference History
West Liberty was a charter member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when it formed in 1924 and won or shared 6 WVIAC men’s basketball championships during a lengthy affiliation stretching over nine decades.
When the league dissolved following the 201213 season, West Liberty joined 11 other schools in forming the Mountain East Conference, which began operation as the NCAA's newest Division II all-sports league in the summer of 2013. Reid Amos was appointed as the MEC's first commissioner and the conference offices were centrally located in Bridgeport, W.Va.
The 2019-20 academic year saw the first changes to the MEC lineup. Charter members UVa-Wise and
