‘Biosecurity’ in hatcheries comprises all measures taken to minimize the risk of the introduction and the spread of infectious agents. Hatcheries take biosecurity measures to protect the production site against diseases in the best possible way. ‘In the best possible way’, because even with an excellent management it is impossible to achieve a zero risk of disease outbreaks (Graham et al., 2008; Butcher en Miles, 2012).

Personal hygiene

When explaining biosecurity, a distinction is made between external and internal biosecurity. External biosecurity has to do with hatcheries keeping in touch with the outside world and trying to prevent disease-causing agents from entering or leaving the hatchery. Internal biosecurity comprises measures which combat the spread of disease within the hatchery. Disease outbreaks result in major economic losses to the poultry industry. Especially when measures such as quarantine or the destruction of whole flocks need to be applied (Carey et al., 2005; Tablante, 2008). They affect the individual farm but may also affect the whole production chain including the hatcheries. Improving biosecurity at farm level and thus lowering the risk of disease outbreaks, has several positive effects. First there is the safety of the produced animal product (cf. Salmonella problem). Second, there is also an improvement in animal welfare due to less disease. Finally and perhaps the most interesting advantage for the farmer is the financial benefit of a disease-free production cycle. Less disease means less veterinary costs and better production results (Laanen et al., 2011). The minimum number of products to produce the maximum performance!

Personal hygiene

Boot, hand and clothing hygiene In the hatchery – management of foot dip, barrier systems, hand and clothing hygiene is often the most overlooked and forgotten to prevent spread of bacteria. Automatic use of these systems should become second nature for hatchery staff and visitors as recent studies have again clearly proven that farm boots samples are an important risk factor with a Salmonella prevalence of 19.7%! (Prev. Vet Med., 2011).

he hatchery, as a segment of the poultry production chain, aims to produce vital chicks that are free of pathogens. Good cleaning and disinfection (C&D) procedures within the hatchery are necessary to reduce and continually minimize the level of microbiological contamination, and subsequently the risk of microbiological

contamination in the building, machinery, eggs and poults. Especially in a hatchery it is crucial that the detergents which are chosen are proven safe for equipment and different types of material (copper, aluminium, etc) but at the same time ensure an excellent cleaning result.

Virocid® is an extremely concentrated disinfectant with a synergistic composition of 4 active ingredients. It has proven records in preventing and fighting disease outbreaks for many years: IB, IBD, Avian Influenza, Enterococcus, Salmonella, Aspergillus. It is amazingly effective at very low dilutions (0,25 – 0,5%) against ALL microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores. Virocid® is hospital graded according to the EPA registration in the USA. The bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal and sporicidal effect of Virocid® is unique in the world and is safe for people, animals and their environment. Virocid® complies with MEL. This legislation ensures a safe and healthy working environment for all employees by assessing the risk of the use of chemical agents within that environment.

Cleaning and disinfection of vehicles The correct process of cleaning and disinfection of vehicles for transporting livestock is essential in controlling disease spread in animals. When washing and disinfecting vehicles choosing products that are not corrosive and does not affect the paint is essential. Outside the trucks one type of soil called traffic film, constituted by dust and grease (waste oil and exhaust) that they "stick" to the outside of the truck due to the electrostatic charge build-up. In summer, dead insects are added to the traffic film. Ideally a detergent should be applied as a foam and with high pressure (min 35 bar). After cleaning, the foam is removed with water before applying the disinfectant. Disinfection arches allow disinfection to points less accessible. At this time, the non-corrosiveness of the chemical agents used is very important.

Water disinfection At some farms there can still be a problem with the drinking water quality, even after a thorough cleaning of the drinking lines. In these cases the problem often lies with the quality of the water that enters the farm. Where does the water come from? Surface water such as artificial lakes or surface wells and well water mostly carry a high bacterial load with them. Also Trichoderma and algae are commonly found in these kind of waters. In these situations the incoming water should be disinfected at all times!

Keno™ Xpro is a two component solution where Keno™ Xpro B works as an activator for Keno™ Xpro A. Once A and B are mixed and added to a specific volume of water, Keno™ Xpro (A+B) produces a chlorine dioxide solution. Keno™ Xpro has a strong oxidating capacity, but is not corrosive and works independently from the pH, temperature and water hardness. It removes and prevents the biofilm. Based on ClO2, Keno™ Xpro prevents deposit of iron and manganese, so scale free drinking lines are assured. Since ClO2 does not cause bad odors (like chlorine), Keno™ Xpro destroys phenols that are responsible for taste and odor problems. Disinfection of hatching eggs

D

isinfection of hatching eggs is one of the CCP’s (critical control points) that plays a role in this. Its aim is to reduce the entrance of pathogens into the hatchery and to minimize the negative effects of them on hatchery results. After being laid, the egg is constantly exposed to contaminations. It is crucial to destroy micro-organisms while they are still on the egg shell. Once micro-organisms penetrate the shell, they reach the shell membrane within minutes and are protected from the disinfectant. Disinfecting hatching eggs by fumigating or cold fogging them with a disinfectant solution is a practice which

is widely used and appreciated. Mainly because during this procedure the eggs don’t get wet and the protocol also can be fully automated. Extensive field research of CID LINES has shown that the relation between the droplet size of the vapour (“fog”), the contact angle (wettability), the type and concentration of the chemicals used, have a huge impact on the success of the disinfection results of the hatching eggs. To create this optimal fog for maximum disinfection results, CID LINES offers a spraying nozzle (ask your CID LINES local dealer for more information)

Disinfection of hatching eggs before setting (on farm, during transport in the egg storage or in a fumigation room) Penetration of the hatching egg shell by microorganisms results in embryonic mortality, weak chicks, high chick mortality, and poor chick growth. The most effective sanitation system involves treating the eggs as soon as they are collected from the nest and before microorganisms penetrate the shell through its pores. A common management tool in the handling of hatching eggs is treatment of the eggs with a type of disinfectant by fumigation to reduce the number of microorganisms on the shell surface. Fumigating hatching eggs with a Virocid® solution should take place in a well sealed room specially dedicated for this purpose. Preferably the whole disinfection process (from start to finish) should be automated so full control of product consumption, air extraction time, etc. and safety for personnel can be guaranteed.
