MPhil/PhD Palliative Care

The Cicely Saunders Institute is a purpose built, world leading institute for research in palliative care and rehabilitation, and an official collaborating centre of the World Health Organisation. Our institute brings together academics, healthcare professionals, community organisations, patients and carers to deliver cutting edge and high quality research.

By studying for your PhD at the CSI, you become part of exciting and ground-breaking research projects which not only influence clinical practice, but national and international policies for palliative care. The institute offers an outstanding multidisciplinary environment, combining epidemiology, social science, psychology, nursing, medical and health services research.

Our PhD students benefit from the extensive range of training and support provided both within the institute and throughout King’s College London. The internal programme of researcher development includes monthly journal clubs; researchers meetings; skills development workshops; clinical update sessions; peer support group; and our open seminar series, which hosts a variety of high-calibre and international speakers.

How to apply:

Fees and funding The Department does not provide grants or other funding for PhD study – any funding required will need to be obtained and agreed in advance by the applicant themselves from other sources.

Students can be self-funded but it is unusual due to the expense.

1-2 page outline of proposed work (including specific study objectives, a planned timetable and suggested dates for period of study) curriculum vitae with referees covering letter

Applicants are advised as soon as possible of the outcome after our internal review, usually within 1 month of receipt of the application.

If successful, the PhD coordinators will discuss your proposal with you - this can be done over telephone or video conferencing as necessary. We expect PhD candidates to have an area of interest which aligns strongly with ongoing work within the Institute, and we can put you in touch with our members of staff who have an interest in that area where appropriate.
