W

e are so glad that you’ve decided to spend this time with us today. All of us were newcomers at one time and we understand how being here for the first time can be somewhat daunting. We didn’t know our way around, we weren’t familiar with the procedures, and we didn’t know all the songs either! We would like to lessen that feeling for you and we invite you to participate at whatever level you are comfortable with. Please visit our Welcome Centre located just off the main lobby where you can reflect and connect. As a first time newcomer we invite you to enjoy a free beverage and snack, connect with church leadership, and find out more about our Church. You will also receive a free gift to celebrate your arrival at Church on the Queensway. A Guest Services counter located in the main lobby is staffed by knowledgeable people. Please feel free to drop by with any questions you may have and pick up more information about our Church.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME REVOLUTION YOUTH IS HOME FOR STUDENTS. In one of the most beloved and famous movies of all time, The Wizard of Oz, the heroine, Dorothy brings normalcy to her life by repeating the phrase: “There’s no place like home”. I have to agree with her. No matter how good a vacation was, or how difficult a day’s trials have been, there is a feeling of peace and comfort that fills me when I open the front door and walk into my home. It’s not the colour of the walls, the comfort of the furniture, or the perfect divots that are in my mattress that means the most to me. For me, home is the place where my family does life together. It’s a safe place where we laugh, cry, eat, sleep, learn, grow, and face the challenges of life, surrounded with the support of people who love us and are committed to us. At the student ministries of Church on the Queensway (Revolution) we try our best to reproduce the same “home like” atmosphere for all of our students. When a student enters Revolution we want them to feel like they are in a safe place, designed with them in mind: A place where they have adults that care for them and are committed to helping them mature and navigate the challenges of teen life. A place where people not only know their name but also their likes, dislikes, dreams and difficulties. A place where smiles are abundant and encouragement is the currency that is continually invested. A place where they can learn and ask questions knowing that those giving the answers have their best interest in mind. A place where they can be applauded when they succeed and accepted and encouraged when they fail. A place where they can laugh...a lot! and build life-long friendships. A place where someone is always happy to see them. Overall, we never want to replace a student’s home… but we do want to mirror the best qualities of home life. Our hope is that every student receives the affirmation, encouragement and love that a “healthy home” provides so that they can truly say… there is no place like home!

I was thinking about HOME

the other day. Not the home I was born into or the home that I drive to at the end of the day, but rather my eternal home.

Homeward Bound

When my dad died earlier this year, I realized all my immediate biological family are gone. My step mom, who my dad married 27 years ago, is like a mom to me. She is my family and for that I am really thankful, however, the family I grew up with, for my first 20 years are gone. That tends to make me think more about my home in heaven. Another place I like to think of as ‘home’ is the one I was born again into in 1991. Once again I belonged to a family, this time the family of God. I was saved at the Church on the Way, in California, pastored by Jack Hayford. It was a very long and circuitous journey to arrive there, but God was very patient with me. Without realizing it at the time, I had finally arrived home. I was introduced to a place called church. Here was a home and family I had never known waiting for me. Being a newborn in this home, brought a lot of attention and care. It was a place where I learned how to walk and to grow. Later I knew God was calling me to return to Canada and another church home. My church home is now here at Church on the Queensway. In any home there are times of birth, growth, cleaning up, studying, celebrating, healing, feasting, fasting, community, intimacy, discipline, mourning losses, grieving mistakes and ultimately doing life together. Without each in its season, a home can become just a house. All these aspects of life are part of a healthy church home too. We all have to make room in our homes for new arrivals, for busyness, for times of solitude, and everything else that our complex lives bring to us. I find church life is one of the most fulfilling aspects of being in a family. Where else can you be part of a family where people are on a common journey to become more like the person they all love and adore? Jesus. ~ Pastor Ed Clements

home. A safe haven Wherever home is to you, it’s not only defined as a building of brick but the love and acceptance that happens inside that home. The Haven has become a home to many people who find themselves unable to maintain self-sufficiency. A place where they receive a smile, food, clothing and someone to talk to. The Haven is home to people like Paul who visits us weekly for a cup of coffee, a muffin and some encouragement from our volunteers at the Oasis. Selena says she has found a new home and second family at the Haven since she and her family are new to Canada. She looks forward to visiting our Clothing Boutique to pick out clothing for her family and to receive the help our First Care program offers with formula, diapers and a basket of new infant items for her new baby. David often visits the Haven to drop off donations and say hi to the volunteers who made him feel at home while he was using the food bank a few years ago.

the joy of helping others and look forward to being part of the Haven family each week. They pray, encourage and celebrate with each other and also make it a second home for community service volunteers. Homelessness is not only not having a place to live- it’s also being rejected, unwanted, uncared for and unloved. Our Hope With Wheels van has become a home for the homeless every Tuesday night. The homeless wait patiently on the streets for the HWW van to pull up and provide a hot bowl of chili, a sandwich, a sleeping bag and most of all, a feeling that they are cared for. Our Lakeside Dinner has become a home once a month for those in the community who need a hot meal. AA has become home to many who are struggling to step over their addictions. Our prison teams have become home to adults and teens who need someone to understand and care for them. Home is where you are nurtured to grow and live independently. The Haven strives to provide the necessities to give hope for an independent life but will always be home to someone in need.

The outside of the Haven may be brick but there is warmth and care flowing on the inside. Not only do our clients feel at home, our volunteers have found a place to share in
