JESUS! I have been asked to write an article on what is means to have Jesus in your life. I think that’s a great question. You see I didn’t always have Jesus in my life. In fact I didn’t become a Christian until I was 20 years old. My life before Jesus was one where I just lived for myself. I did what I wanted when I wanted with no regard for anyone else. But once I let Jesus into my life, everything changed. Let me try to explain ...

You see having Jesus in your life means that your life is no longer yours. It involves a change of heart, a change of thinking and a change in how you live your life. After becoming a Christian, I allowed God to have a say in how I lived my life, how I spent my money, how I spent my time even how I spoke to people. For me having Jesus in my life is best said this way, “I am a child of God, seeking to live my life as Jesus would if He were in my shoes.”

“It involves a heart change, a change of thinking and a change in how you live your life.”

In everything I do, I am trying to do what Jesus would want me to do. How do I interact with the people in my life? Just like Jesus would ... with kindness, compassion and honesty. How do I spend my time? Just like Jesus would ... helping people, working hard and spending time with my heavenly Father. How do I spend my money? Just like Jesus would ... spending it wisely, giving to His work and helping those in need. My challenge to you is to be an everyday Christian not just a Sunday Christian. Remember you are a child of God and seek to live your life as Jesus were in your shoes.

Your view of church may be wrong WHAT PLACE DOES CHURCH PLAY IN MY WALK WITH JESUS? What a great question! Some of us grew up in church … perhaps you attended first communion classes or Sunday School classes or maybe even a Vacation Bible School. But now church is not important to your daily life. You may attend church for a wedding or funeral but going to church every Sunday does not even cross your mind. Now you are reading an article that is going to try to convince you that church is important … that church is a necessary part of your life as a Christ follower. But why is church necessary? From a person who did not grow up in church, I was totally ignorant why going to church was essential to my Christian life. Let me share with you what I have learned … First, the Bible tells us to go to church.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25, NIV). Going to church, meeting together to worship God and learn from His Word is biblical. God requires and expects His people to meet together. Second, the Bible tells us that when we become a Christ follower we become part of His Body. Christ’s Body is a picture of His church. Scripture describes it this way: “The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t. If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing. If one part flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance” (1 Corinthians 12:25-26, The Message).

In order for the Body of Christ i.e. the church to function well, everyone needs to be part and to do their part. If one part is missing, the Body is incomplete. When I do not fulfill my part of the church, the church is incomplete and less effective. Whether you believe it or not, you are needed and are necessary for the church to be all she is to be in this world. Lastly, the church plays a vital role in our growth as a Christ. Our goal as a Christ follower is to become more and more like Christ. How does this happen? In community … living and serving God together. The Bible says it this way: “You use steel to sharpen steel, and one friend sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17, The Message) I need you to help me grow in God and you need me to help you grow in God. That’s the truth! We need each other. We cannot do it alone! The church needs you and you need church. That’s the way God created it to be. We really hope to see you Sunday!

KNOCK AND THE DOOR WILL BE

OPENED TO

YOU

“BUT THEN.. JESUS BECAME OUR SALVATION” 10

SO WHAT IS SALVATION REALLY? We have this thing we do as humans. We think we can be good enough, work hard enough, give enough money or time and by ‘doing’ we become good people…and good people go to heaven, right? We do good then good things happen to us, we work hard then we get the promotion, we give money to that cause then people think we’re compassionate and we get brownie points when we kick the bucket. So, slight problem. No matter how good we try to be we can never be without sin. Have you ever lied? Had a bad thought about someone? Disobeyed your parents? Looked lustfully at someone? Doesn’t matter how big or small, significant or insignificant your sin is, it’s still sin and it’s still there in your heart. According to God, because of sin we deserve death. Plain and simple. Actually, because of sin we are already dead and objects of God’s wrath (Ephesians 2:3). Any speck of sin cannot be in the presence of a most Holy God. So it’s all hopeless, really. But then Jesus Christ who is God came. Jesus Christ became our salvation.

“But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we are dead in transgressions—it Is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2: 4-5 You can’t earn this. You can’t work hard for it. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 Salvation is a gift—it’s the deliverance from sin. “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 So, what is Salvation? Salvation is a mind-boggling impossibility that God made possible, by grace, through Jesus Christ (and no one else – Acts 4:12) because of His great love. The price has already been paid. Christ already died and rose again. We’ve just got to believe it by faith.

Christ took the punishment for our sin. He died, conquered death and rose again so we could have life. And it doesn’t make sense, does it? Why would God do that?

RED CARPET REVELATIONS “YOU CAN JUST LEAVE YOU KNOW.” I thought I was losing my mind. I had never heard voices before. This one was unmistakable. “Just leave.” There it was again. I was standing in a bar in New York City, something I had done many times before, but this time, I was feeling restless and dissatisfied with the entire life I had been living. When this voice entered my mind, it sounded like the most profound thing I had ever heard. It was like the answer to what I had been searching for. Why not just leave? So I did. It felt a bit silly, following this voice that spoke to me, but it made so much sense. This was the crossroads in my journey that had begun years ago. I was raised in home that was moral, but there was no faith in God, no church and no teaching on anything to do with the Bible. I had always wanted to be baptized in water, but I didn’t understand why. When I asked my mom about getting

baptized, she explained that I should investigate all the major world religions to find out what I wanted to be baptized into. That didn’t help. There was a Pentecostal church up the street. I asked what the word Pentecostal meant and I was told to “Stay away, they’re very strict”. Another turn off, so I bypassed that. It wasn’t until I was living in New York City, and had “made it” career wise, that these questions came back to me. My older brother had died in a car accident when he was 20, and my mom died of a brain tumour two years later. Obviously life was too short, so I had decided to go out to make it in the world on my own. I did. Things happened. I was in an Oscar nominated movie, and did the circuit of film festivals. I was standing on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, and people were cheering. But, having reached the pinnacle of success according to what I was taught, how come I still felt so empty, so hollow?

It was then I started searching for God. I pursued my career to Los Angeles and it was there I met the God who had been pursuing me all my life. I had gone to a church service one Sunday, and sat there feeling like I wanted to leave. Something kept me in my seat. When the pastor asked if anyone wanted to follow Jesus Christ, this weight lifted off me, and I went forward. I chose to be baptized in water that same night and everything changed. A short time later I went back home to Canada and with God’s help started my new life in Him. He has helped me every step of the way and I’m so thankful. I know He always had a plan for me. He was just waiting for me to respond to Him. I finally did and that has made all the difference. ED CLEMENTS

RENATA’S STORY

My childhood as I remember it was one that from the outside looked like the perfect family. However, inside the home was dysfunctional and less than nurturing. I was given all the opportunities that a child could ever want when it came to education but the one thing I craved that I didn’t get enough of, was an open expression of love. I remember being an extremely sensitive and emotional child. My feelings got hurt easily and I had great empathy for people who were hurting. As an adult, I started going to the group, “The Twelve Steps - A Spiritual Journey.” The difference was this group was scripture based. For example Step One – We admitted we were power-

16

less over the effects of our separation from God - that our lives had become unmanageable. “I know nothing good lives in me that is in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good but I cannot carry it out (Romans 7:18). My resentments, repressed and inappropriately expressed anger, approval seeking, fear of abandonment and rejection, control issues, feelings of low self esteem, irresponsibility, – I worked this program like I’d never worked anything in my life!! Then came Step Five “Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs” “Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed (James 5:16) and Proverbs 28:13 “He who conceals his sin does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy”

This was the step that brought me so much freedom. It took my willingness, openness and honesty (humility) to surrender, confess and ask God to forgive me for hurting Him, myself and others. Jesus showed me through this process that he would never leave me nor forsake me like so many humans had done. I needed to give Him my pride, my greed, my dishonesty and my hurts – I needed to confess it all!! I had been in so much bondage in these areas. After my repentance and confession there was this deep sorrow that flooded me - it was painful for all the years that I had lost, but at the same time so sweet. I had never felt so much peace, joy acceptance and love in my life. This is what I’d been seeking all my life. God is so real, I had been spiritually bankrupt when I came into this program and that void and the longing I felt for so long was finally being filled. This void can

only be filled by the love of Jesus Christ. My behaviour, my way of communicating, my relationships have been mended. I have been forgiven by my family, friends and kids. I am accountable for my behaviour and choices in life. I lead 12 step groups for women at Church on the Queensway and God uses me to help them though the same issues I have dealt with. I had to die to self and allow Christ to work through me to heal. I no longer try to get approval from people, I am not a victim and I do not blame others for my behaviour. I am accountable to Christ and have a very strong support system; I understand what a boundary is. I tried every way possible to get well but the only solution is in Jesus Christ!! Only He could have brought me out of my personal prison and He can do the same for you. Praise God!

MY PATH I can remember the first time I decided to come to the Hub. At that point, back in 2010, I knew that there was a God that people spoke to and requested things from but I did not know who He was, what He did, or how much He loved me; I had absolutely no clue about Jesus. In my case, I never grew up in a home where God was spoken about or never had the opportunity to go to church. Churches were simply viewed as a place for funerals and weddings. However, my experience at the Hub and subsequently at Church on the Queensway completely blew my mind and significantly redesigned the way I thought about God and about the church. My interaction with fellow Christians at the Hub and on Sundays would leave me feeling loved. The atmosphere was warm and cheerful; the feeling was genuine unlike any other I had ever experienced. That is when it occurred to me that church was not just a venue, but a place where spiritual families are formed, a group of individuals from different walks of life coming together to share their passion and love for Christ. As a new Christian, I realized that the more I took God seriously by: having faith in Him, studying His word, & becoming more involved in the Church; the more God would answer my questions. The more I allowed Christ to take over my life, the more His love for me was revealed. When I think about where I was and the destructive path I was on, my testimony confirms to me that God truly does love us unconditionally. He still protected me despite my ignorance to His sovereignty & love. Like the prodigal son, all I had to do was accept Christ into my life and come home. True to His word He delivered and redeemed me from the path of self destruction. Now, I walk with Christ & I earnestly seek Him with my whole heart & entire being. My life has changed tremendously & my relationships with my family & friends are much healthier. God has taken away my anger, anxiety, depression and has replaced it with love, kindness, patience and so much more. Although every day is not filled with sugar, spice & everything nice, I have Jesus and when I think about Him; there is instant serenity. I remind myself to praise Him in adversity & in times of joy for I know that: He has conquered the world; He will never leave me or forsake me; and most importantly He IS love, His love for me is unconditional, perfect & eternal. What more can a girl ask for?
