NEW TO CHURCH W
e are so glad that you’ve decided to spend this time with us today. All of us were newcomers at one time and we understand how being here for the first time can be somewhat daunting. We didn’t know our way around, we weren’t familiar with the procedures, and we didn’t know all the songs either! We would like to lessen that feeling for you and we invite you to participate at whatever level you are comfortable with. A comfortable Welcome Centre located just off the main lobby where you can reflect and connect. As a first time newcomer we invite you to enjoy a free beverage and snack, connect with church leadership, and find out more about our Church. You will also receive a free gift to celebrate your arrival at Church on the Queensway. A Guest Services counter located in the main lobby is staffed by knowledgeable people. Please feel free to drop by with any questions you may have and pick up more information about our Church.
Come to our Welcome Centre. Join us for a coffee, tea or glass of water and let us tell you a little bit about our church. You’re invited to our Newcomers Discovery luncheon. Simply complete the Newcomer card and let us know you’re interested. Go beyond the sanctuary and get involved in the life of the church. There really is something for everyone at Church on the Queensway.
There is a safe place for your kids, from infants through to high school, to experience God in an age appropriate setting. Check out the many age-relevant programs available during our services and at other times during the week.
CHURCH IS MORE THAN SUNDAY!!! I am thrilled at how many people attend Church on the Queensway on a Sunday morning. It is without a doubt a fabulous feeling, seeing God grow the Church through many different ministries. However many of us only go to Church Sunday morning! The Church according to the Bible is the Body of Christ. Jesus is the head and we are all part of the Body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul tells us that if one part of the Body doesn’t participate…then it hurts the whole Body. Don’t get me wrong! I am thrilled that many come Sunday but the Church is more than Sunday morning. Our small group ministry is the life line of our Church. Home groups, 12 steps, recovery groups, Mommy and Me, prayer groups and so many other groups bring the life of Christ to us. Church on the Queensway has groups that do a variety of things … some are serving groups, others help with recovery, while other groups study the Bible and pray. Jesus called us to be disciples and these groups help us develop with the help of other people to be a disciple. The formula is this: Body of Christ + Discipleship = Jesus’ plan for the Church. Many times I hear that it is difficult to know people in a large church. Although this is true, the key to connecting and having friends is our small group ministries. The good news is that this is happening within our small groups. For example, I know that the Hope with Wheels ministry group is a close knit group of friends, the Food Bank volunteers are like a family and the Friday night prayer group is close to each other because of prayer. Group ministry is the essence of the Body of Christ. How do I know??? Even Jesus had a small group, they were the 12 disciples. I am inviting you today to join one of our small groups in our church.
Group ministry is the essence of the Body of Christ. Isolation never is or will be Biblical. We need each other. We are called to be part of the Body of Christ. This fall I hope you take advantage of the different groups and their ministries in the Church on the Queensway. Invest in a group so that the group can invest in you. God bless. ~ Billy, friend and pastor. P.S. We really do appreciate all the group leaders in the Church. Thanks. Our Church’s magazine this issue is dedicated to small group ministry. If you want more information, please contact one of the pastors or go to the Guest Services in the lobby.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
The Hub was born out of recognizing a need for a young adult gathering place in the Greater Toronto Area. The intention is not to “steal” people away from their home church but rather to give young adults a place to meet with those their age, challenge them in their relationship with God and release them back to their home church ready and willing to serve. Picture a bicycle wheel with three main components: hub, spokes and rim. The rim symbolizes movement which is our purpose - we are called to ‘Go into the world…’ This action is represented by the spokes which give strength to this movement. These spokes are all connected to the hub at the center. When that connection is established and people are going out into the world, movement/purpose is created! Sure, we may have our big gathering every Sunday night, but the Hub is more than just a service - it’s about Service. Young adults are gathering together in various small groups that are focused on deepening their understanding of Scripture and using the gifts that God has given them to spread His truth abroad - these are the spokes! There are many forms that these small groups take but one thing remains the same - the goal is to bring young adults into relationship with Christ and each other. There are various sport-based small groups that help the non-believer to get connected but there are also deep exegetical Bible studies that will connect those that have a deep hunger for the Word of God. As well, there are groups that are focused on going into the heart of our city to share the Love of Christ with all that they encounter! We are seeing young adults from all over, stepping out in faith and connecting to God’s Heart through these spokes and it is incredible to see the fruit of the Holy Spirit come alive in them! For the many young adults who call Church on the Queensway their home, they have truly embraced being a part of our church community by using their gifts and talents to serve each other and to serve you. You will recognize their faces among the worship teams, Passion Play and Christmas play casts, leading small groups, being involved in the children and youth ministries, serving at The Haven…all for the glory of God. God is moving and He’s using this generation of young adults to reap a harvest and take back their generation for Jesus Christ! ~ Pastor Josh Hageman

NIKKI & SARAH
As we write this our seven children are sitting around us in our apartment in India. They are bathed, have food in their bellies and smiles on their faces, and this was made possible in large part by our family at Church on the Queensway. We are here in India for six months establishing a foster home for seven orphans with special needs. We will never forget the looks on their faces as we cuddled them to sleep on their first night with us. We are here to show them God’s love. God made them perfectly in His image and
they are the most beautiful children in the world. On the days when we are struggling with the challenges that come with raising seven children with disabilities, our Church on the Queensway family never fails to send us little notes of support. We are so blessed to have a community of supporters at the Queensway, encouraging us financially, spiritually, and emotionally. Knowing that there are people praying for our kids and for God’s work
We are so blessed to have a community of supporters being done here cannot be described and continually gives us strength. The Queensway is where our faith grew and where it continues to grow; even if we cannot be there physically right now. The pastors and friends we have met are an incredible motivation as we follow Jesus’ call on our lives and we are forever grateful that there are people praying for our kids and for God’s work being done here cannot be described and continually gives us strength.

DOORWAY TO GOD After a tumultuous childhood I was introduced to alcohol and drugs at the age of 13 and they became my crutch. I lived a selfish, dishonest and frightened life. At the age of 24 I was married, had 2 children and hoped my troubles were behind me. But, I was wrong. My drinking turned into a nightmare and as a result I was divorced, lost my dream job, was almost homeless, abandoned my family and friends and blamed everyone else for my troubles. During these self-destructing years, I reconnected with a friend who asked me an important question, “Olaf, what are you willing to do to get and stay sober and drug free?” I answered, “ANYTHING”! He invited me to an AA meeting and I have never turned back. AA was my doorway to God. He has been doing for me what I could not do for myself. I trust in His power because without Him I am a failure in every department of
my life. With the help of God, AA, and my friends I have found freedom from self and trust in God. I now lead the Hadenuffyet Group of Alcoholics Anonymous which meets every Wednesday and Friday evening at the Haven. We welcome people, ask nothing of them and share our experiences, strength and hope with them. We teach that God is a loving God who is there for them. I feel very blessed and humbled as I pass along to others what was given to me. I feel privileged to share and co-ordinate the group in a positive direction which has a lasting effect on all those that attend the meeting on a one time or a continued basis. ~ Olaf Schneider
COMMUNITY STARTS HERE Maybe someone told you about church, and you decided to check it out. Maybe you wondered what this place was. Maybe you were going to IKEA and saw the building. Maybe you found the Truth program on TV and decided to take Pastor Billy up on his invitation to join us on a Sunday morning.
So, it’s your first Sunday in this place. You come in the doors and find a seat for the service. You interact with a few people around you, but you are new here so you don’t know anyone. Then when the service is over, you head out for lunch. Someone said something about going to the Welcome Centre to get
…and maybe you’re right. When I first became a Christian, I remember what it was like to be in a new city, and a stranger in the church, where I didn’t know anyone. But it was how welcome I felt in that church that really stayed with me. One of the ways that happened was getting connected in a home group. I found community, and friendship and a deeper walk with the Lord that really helped me. Or maybe you have been at Queensway a few years, but want a mid-week group closer to home to connect in a smaller setting.
How am I going to meet people and connect?
Home groups are a vital way to grow, but they are also a great way to build relationships, whether you are single, a couple, man, woman, youth, adult or a senior. This can be some friends getting together once a month, or a weekly regional Bible Study. There are groups of all kinds that meet regularly. Your group can focus on the previous week’s sermon, or you can choose a topical study.
more information, but you thought, “maybe next week.” Then as the week goes on, you think, I don’t know anyone there, how am I going to meet people and connect?
If you have any questions, please contact me at: email@example.com talk about becoming a part of community. If you are interested in hosting a home group or leading a group, we want to talk to you! Please get in touch with us.
churchLIFE/ FALL 2013
MY COMMUNITY HAND PICKED When I first came to Queensway I felt overwhelmed. Here was this huge church, with this huge congregation. I was a new Christian. I felt like a lost child, I didn’t know where I would fit in. All my insecurities were creeping up but there had to be more to life than the way I was living it and maybe this was the place to start. I got connected with small groups and Pastor Karen. Over time, God has handpicked an amazing “church family” for me. God works in such
wondrous ways. He weaves our lives together in ways that we can never imagine. If only we could see all that He has planned out for us. But where would be the fun and adventure in all of that?!! It’s truly an amazing journey. Ups and downs included. Recently, I was hospitalized. I was physically broken and alone, and never felt alone one single second. His Church was there for me in every way. His Mighty Hand moved through His people. They were His hands and feet. I was never alone. I was covered. I have never felt so loved and blessed. This “family” means so much to me. We are there for one another. We lift one another up.
God has handpicked an amazing “church family” for me. We encourage, we pray, we cry, we laugh, and we love. Seriously, I can’t wait to worship our DAD together every week! All the believers were together and had everything in common. ~ Acts2:44 ~ Nicole Persaud
