End-of-Year Celebrations

Dear Churchill Family & Friends,

Churchill Center & School is a special place...which is not news to you! It’s a place where our students with learning disabilities learn to thrive, discover, grow, find support and encouragement, and ultimately, a place where they reach their full potential. Every year, we marvel at and cheer on our children’s exceptional strides during the school term - through classmates who understand them, teachers who believe in them, families who encourage them, and a community that instills unwavering confidence in them. It’s incredible, and I am in awe of and empowered by our family of students, educators, parents, friends, and surrounding network that we have cultivated here at Churchill. Thanks to YOU, the 2022-2023 school year was a big success in every way!

We celebrate all means of victories, big and small, each day, but please allow me to spotlight some wonderful highlights below.

The Sandra K. Gilligan (SKG) School Partnerships & Outreach Program, led by Director Mary Brotherton, continues to be a source of pride and inspiration in our community and further reinforces our reputation as national leaders in learning disabilities. We were pleased to welcome distinguished and notable speakers, lead numerous student, parent and educator workshops and trainings, participate and sponsor local events, partner with two St. Louis Public Schools to help implement Wilson Fundations® programming, and so much more. I invite you to learn more in the SKG Outreach Report on pages 4-7. I also invite you to congratulate and recognize Mary Brotherton on her 35 years of service to our school and our mission of fostering greater understanding and support for all people with learning disabilities. Her legacy will resonate in our community and beyond for years to come, and we wish her so much happiness in her retirement.

A thrill this year, and every year, is Grand Day! This past November, we welcomed close to 300 honored grandparents and special guests for a day filled with understanding, kindness, learning and smiles all around. Seeing the joy in our students’ faces as they led and interacted with their “grand visitors” is something we will not soon forget.

Talents, interests and hobbies were quite literally ON DISPLAY during this year’s exciting Bulldog Bonanza (formerly known as the Spring Showcase). Coached and cheered on by teacher sponsors, our children proudly demonstrated their musical, dance, acting, comedy and (many) more skills on stage in front of their peers, faculty and staff, and families. They also created, presented and shared tabletop displays featuring their favorite hobbies and interests!

It’s “A Tale As Old As Time”... Further showcasing their artistry, confidence and courage, our multi-talented students, led by our fantastic Fine Arts Department, performed a magical production of Beauty and the Beast to proud, enthusiastic and honored audiences, regaling us with their wonderful voices, acting ability and overwhelming charisma. In the spring we hosted the third annual Run with Rankin at Churchill! There were almost 170 racers (including 19 alumni!) who participated in either the 1-Mile/5K virtual run or the 1-Mile race on Churchill’s Valentine Field in April. Thanks to everyone who attended, supported, cheered and participated, we raised over $10,000 for the Scholarship Fund! This year’s Run with Rankin was even more poignant because we were able to recognize and celebrate Mr. Brad Rankin, Motor Skills Supervisor, for his 40 years of encouraging, motivating and training our Churchill Bulldogsand his well-deserved retirement. Our cup RUNNETH over.

Your generosity of spirit, giving and commitment during the 2022-2023 school year ensures that we have firmly stewarded our school’s mission and that our future remains bright. Thanks to each and every one of you for your continued dedication, support and advocacy of Churchill Center & School. It’s a magical place to be because of YOU!

Sincerely,

CHURCHILL CENTER & SCHOOL | 1
A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Anne Evers with Churchill’s Co-Founder Perry Streett (in silver coat) and Perry’s family! Anne Evers with Churchill’s Co-Founder Bonnie Summers Wolfarth (in purple) and Mary Brotherton

Dear Churchill Community,

On behalf of Churchill’s Board of Trustees, I sincerely salute your passion and guardianship for our school.

The essence of Churchill is to help children find their voices, foster creativity, build confidence and teach them the best way THEY can learn. As Board President and as a grateful parent of a Churchill alumnus, I am deeply committed to the success and fidelity of Churchill and our community. Since 1978, our school’s fundamental, child-centered mission has remained the same - to provide our students and their families with Churchill’s individualized, research-based curriculum and proven strategies to administer the best instruction possible for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

Event Fundraising

Churchill’s Golf Tournament truly takes so many invested individuals to be successful. Our 7th biennial golf event was our most triumphant tournament fundraiser to date. We hosted 132 golfers and raised $100,000 for the Scholarship Fund! I want to recognize all of our wonderful sponsors and underwriters, attendees, volunteers and committee members. Special kudos to our remarkable platinum sponsors: Broadview Screen Co., Midwest Petroleum, and The Stoeberl Family, as well as gold sponsors: McBride Homes and The Totterdale Family.

During the always fun and lively Sip & Savor last fall, Churchill welcomed over 150 parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and friends. The evening featured food from local, esteemed restaurants, delicious, innovative adult beverages from area craft brewers, and a premium wine selection provided and poured by Churchill alumna parents Steve and Christine Gordon. Thank you to our gold event sponsors: Haberberger, Inc. Mechanical Contractors, the Totterdale Family, and the Warrelmann Family!

Board of Trustees Thank You

This year, like every year, I am beholden to the dedicated members of Churchill’s Board of Trustees. Every Trustee gives of his/her time, treasure and valued input throughout the school year, and their individual experience and wisdom is vital to the success and fidelity of our school. In this spirit, I want to recognize and acknowledge the Trustees who rolled off the Board at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year, each having served the Board for six or more years: Jodie Finney, Nicole Gore, and Peter Villhard. I would also like to welcome our new Board members for 2023-2024, including: Daniel Fredman, President of the Alumni Association, Raina McNutt, President of the Parents Association, Theresa Ackermann, David Meyers, and Will Rassieur.

Lastly, our annual DeDe’s Chocolate Covered Almond sales topped “the scales” selling more than 5,200 boxes and raising over $84,000 to support Churchill’s Scholarship Fund. A massive thank you to the Schulz Family, including Churchill Alumnus Hank and current Trustee member Rebecca, for driving to and from Chicago to pick up and tow the delectable almonds this year!

I am very proud to work with Head of School Anne Evers and Churchill’s Board of Trustees. We will continue to collaborate to solidify Churchill’s position as a national leader for educators, administrators and schools in the field, and further commit to our effective and powerful mission.

I believe that, if we continue to be guided by a philosophy that encourages a spirit of giving, dedication and transformation, the 2023-2024 school year, and every year to follow, will be triumphant in every way!

Sincerely,

12 | VICTORY 2022-2023 ANNUAL REPORT

2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR

Staff Recognition

We are proud of our esteemed faculty and staff, and we thank them for their tireless commitment to our students! This year we commemorate the following for their noteworthy milestones and years of service during the 2022-2023 school year.

RETIRING!

Mr.Brad Rankin

For 40 years, Mr. Brad Rankin, Churchill’s Motor Skills Supervisor, has been encouraging, motivating, training and cheering on our Churchill Bulldogs! Through his commitment to raising physical fitness through structured activities, he helped design a program promoting the development of aerobic capacity, flexibility and strength, enhanced perceptual motor skills, and skills training and cooperation through a variety of team sports - not to mention, all the tireless encouragement and confidence-building. “Running the Mile” remains a core and favorite memory for so many Churchill Bulldogs through the years. He has earned a well-deserved retirement and some rest (although we know he won’t really rest!)

RETIRING!

Mrs.Mary Brotherton

Mrs. Mary Brotherton, Churchill’s Director of the Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Outreach Program, has been with our school since 1988. We thank her for her 35 years of service in championing our mission of fostering greater understanding and support for all people with learning disabilities by training other educators, supporting families and enlightening the community. Her work with Churchill’s Outreach Program, including: Wilson Reading System®, Fundations®, Teacher Training, Speaker Series, School Partnerships, and Terri’s Tutors has made a forever impact on Churchill’s position as a national leader in the field of learning disabilities.

DRUMROLL PLEASE...

Churchill’s 2023 John D. Valentine Award Recipient is…

Ms. Julie Wiseman!

1 YEAR

In the spring of 2003, Churchill’s Board of Trustees created the John D. Valentine Award for Teaching Excellence as a special tribute to the memory of John Valentine, a past parent, Board member and dedicated Churchill supporter. Each year this award is presented to a Churchill teacher who exemplifies the best of teaching.

All the applause, credit, kudos, and extra jazz hands goes to Churchill’s 2023 John D. Valentine Award recipient and current Fine Arts and Tutorial Teacher Julie Wiseman! She was selected by her colleagues to win this prestigious and coveted award. Those who know or have been taught by Ms. Wiseman know her enthusiasm, passion, dedication and heart for our students and school. Her contagious personality and smile lights up our hallways and we are all lucky to be led by her service to our school. THANK YOU MS. WISEMAN! Congratulations!

End of Year Celebrations

16 | VICTORY 2022-2023 ANNUAL REPORT

Awards & Graduation Ceremony

GO BULLDOGS GO! Working hard, learning effectively, developing new strategies, gaining friendships, building trust, persevering, achieving, having fun and making great strides.

On Friday, May 26, 2023, we recognized and honored all of these things and more with our inspiring Awards & Graduation Ceremony! During the celebration, our students were presented accolades for reading incentives, personal bests, peacebuilding, motor skills efforts and homework honors. We salute our students, faculty, staff and the entire Churchill community on a truly successful 2022-2023 school year!

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

In addition, we were thrilled to welcome a distinguished and accomplished Churchill Alumnus, Chris Danforth ‘87, as our Commencement Speaker. Chris shared that our children are now part of “The Churchill Club”, a very special group where they are LUCKY members. Lucky to use their learning differences to their advantage and implement the classroom strategies they have been taught, lucky to have families and a community that recognizes their potential intelligence and talents, lucky to have found Churchill and be taught by teachers who deeply care about their success now and in the future, and lucky that Churchill will always be in their corner!

Student Awards Recognition

We also recognized a few extra special students with a few extra special honors during our morning of celebration. You make us SO proud. Keep being YOU!
