Head of School A Message from the
DEAR CHURCHILL FAMILY AND FRIENDS,
I shared the following quote with our students this year and I’d like to share it with you as well. Winston Churchill once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a BIG difference.”
I am convinced that our teachers and staff, children, parents and entire community continue to outdo themselves each school term. I truly believe this is because we choose to celebrate each other in ways both big and small throughout the year. We choose to build one another up, acknowledge our achievements, promote small acts of kindness, recognize effort, learn, grow, and appreciate that positive attitudes lead to positive outcomes. As we reflect back on the 2021-2022 school year, I would like to share some incredible highlights.
Our classrooms were filled with hands-on, research-based learning experiences and activities. Social Studies & Science and History students designed their own private islands, studied early Native American communities, recognized Women’s History Month, heard from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and so much more!
In Language Arts, students published their very own recipe books, celebrated 100 writing assignments, learned cursive and wrote, read and shared wonderful writing pieces together! Over in Math, classes held their own “Math Olympics”, used exponent patterns and theories, determined areas and perimeters, and then some (or sum)! Track meets, Field Day, team sports, personal growth and running-dominated Motor Skills. Fine Arts continued to amaze with their singing, dancing and multiple live drama presentations performed for their peers and small community groups. Our Art students dazzled in their “Show Me the Art” Show, photography projects, seasonal masterpieces, and creativity that sparked conversation, wonderment and audible gasps. In Tutorial, the backbone of Churchill, teachers and students continued to develop meaningful, lasting, hard-working and productive partnerships. Our curriculum is as engaging and innovative as it is structured and vital for all!
At Churchill, we look for ways to promote and encourage kindness every day. We are extraordinarily proud of our work with the St. Louis Area Foodbank, celebrating our 8th Annual Food Drive this year by collecting, counting and delivering 1,571 goods! We also strongly believe in and promote our Peacebuilder program that honors kindness, acts of peace and building goodwill. P.A.W.S. credits young students who “Practice Awesome Attitude, Work Hard and Self-Advocate.’’ We also celebrated National Volunteer Month, Veterans’ Day and National Kindness Day. We look for small ways every day to color our part of the world with kindness!
Another way we stay connected and growing at Churchill is through our wonderful clubs. These breaktime groups are advocated for by students and moderated by teachers. This year, interests included coloring, Spikeball, nail painting, LEGO®, ping pong and reading - to only name a few! Spirit Days, Halloween costume parades and trick-or-treating, Thanksgiving feasts, holiday cocoa, Valentine’s Day treats and team building days - our children appreciate these special times with their classmates and teachers so very much!
The Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Outreach program, led by Director Mary Brotherton, reinforced our commitment to outreach and maintaining our reputation as national leaders in learning disabilities, by implementing multiple teacher professional opportunities and workshops, enacting an inaugural Pilot Group Reading Program using Wilson Reading System® (WRS) through intensive tutoring, led and promoted community presentations and simulations, school visits, Fundations® training, and administered WRS teacher training classes. I invite you to learn more in the Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Outreach Report on pages 4-5.
We were thrilled to be able to celebrate some spectacular in-person events last year that we were unable to host because of the pandemic. Grand Day is a highlight of every school year, and this year we were joined by Mr. Rick Lavoie, who spoke to our guests. We honored Churchill’s Founding Director, Sandi Gilligan, for her 42 years of hard work, passion, dedication and service to our school, students and mission, with a special gathering at Meadowbrook Country Club in September. We welcomed alumni and our extended community back for the 16th Annual College Opportunities Fair, held Parents Association meetings and parent-led activities, invited back parent volunteers into our building, celebrated our older students with an end-of-year celebration, commemorated the Awards & Graduation Ceremony in-person, heard from exciting speakers, executed teacher trainings, held parent workshops, and entertained so many more wonderful experiences that we had sorely missed!
And then there was… Churchill’s “Greatest Show” Dinner & Auction in April - Churchill’s most successful Auction EVER that included raising $114,000 to purchase new SMART Boards for all our classrooms! The overwhelming generosity to make “a million dreams” come true for our students and families through our Scholarship Fund will never be forgotten.
Thank you to each and every one of you for everything you do to support our school and our mission. Thank you for YOUR positive advocacy that makes a BIG difference! Go Bulldogs!
Sincerely, ANNE EVERS

A Message from the
Board President
DEAR CHURCHILL COMMUNITY,
On behalf of Churchill Center & School’s Board of Trustees, I sincerely thank you for your generous support of our school. Your commitment helps champion our pursuit of knowledge, growth and inspiration. We are grateful for friends like you!
I was proud to serve as Churchill’s newest Board President in its 44th year of education, and I look forward to serving as Board President in the 2022-2023 school year. As a thankful parent of a Churchill alumnus, and after serving as a Trustee for the past six years, I am very passionate and deeply committed to advancing the success, integrity and vitality of our school and its excellence in education.
CAMPUS SIGNAGE
The next time you visit Churchill Center & School, you will be welcomed by a brand new, brick entrance sign! This was an important and much-heralded project led by the Building & Grounds Committee. The permanent sign is well-lit, highly-manicured and a (literal) welcome addition to our campus - and everyone who will visit Churchill.
EVENT FUNDRAISING
As many of you know, having an event on the scale of Churchill’s Dinner & Auction truly takes our entire Churchill community to be successful. As Anne shared in her letter, Churchill’s “Greatest Show” was our most successful fundraiser to-date, raising more than $460,000 for the Scholarship Fund and new SMART Boards. I want to THANK all of our wonderful sponsors and underwriters, attendees, volunteers and committee members, extraordinary Co-Chairs Sarah Barnes, Carrie Clay and Christine Gordon, and our enthusiasticallyhilarious and passionate emcee and current parent, Jen Myers. Each of these people and many others who supported the event made it possible for EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR raised to go directly to support
Churchill. Special kudos to our remarkable event sponsors, including platinum sponsors: ACME Erectors, Tiffany and Grant Dino Family Foundation and Steve and Christine Gordon with Renaissance Financial. AMAZING!
The second Biennial Run With Rankin was also hugely successful this past fall! This exciting event joins many students and their families, both past and present, and celebrates longtime Motor Skills Supervisor Brad Rankin, his dedication to our students, and the running program he helped build. Thanks to our sponsors and everyone who participated, we raised over $13,200 for the Scholarship Fund. Go Bulldogs!
Lastly, our annual DeDe’s ChocolateCovered Almond Sales had its biggest year yet, selling over 5,100 boxes to raise more than $80,000 for our Scholarship Fund! A huge THANK YOU to the Milligan Family for their many years of dedication in picking up and delivering the Almonds!
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Inside the entrance of Churchill’s building, there is an iconic mural with a headline that helped lead us to adopt the inspirational “Starfish Story”. It reads: “Making a difference…one at a time.” I believe each member of Churchill’s Board of Trustees provides experience, wisdom, insight and passion that are invaluable to the success of our school. We will continue to build a Board that is robust, diverse and will help guide policy,
procedure and decision-making so that our future is bright for many, many years to come. We thank and acknowledge the Trustees who served with fidelity and rolled off the Board at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year: Jim Charmley, Kurt Mollet and Sarah Roche.
Finally, we were honored to recognize a very special member of the Churchill Family and Board - Ginny Orthwein. Collectively, Ginny served a total of 21 years as a Trustee, which is half the age of Churchill! She served on every committee, as Vice President, President and Co-Chair on Capital Campaigns, and was an integral part of growing Churchill into what it is today. We are forever grateful to Ginny for her years of service and making an incredible difference in our school community!
THANK YOU
I am proud to work with Head of School Anne Evers and Churchill Center & School’s Board of Trustees as we continue to provide our students and their families an individualized, researchbased curriculum and proven strategies to administer the best instruction possible for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Our recognition as a national leader in education and an expert source of knowledge for teachers and other educational professionals throughout the region continues to be a pillar of our success - and propels our powerful mission.
I look forward to an encouraging, triumphant 2022-2023 school year!
Sincerely, PHYLLIS HARTRICH
Welcome to Churchill Center & School!
Thank you Ginny!

EDUCATIONAL SPEAKER SERIES
It was our distinct pleasure and honor to welcome three highly-esteemed and knowledgeable speakers to our school this year, as part of Churchill’s Educational Speaker Series.
In the Fall of 2021, Jessica Minahan, licensed and board-certified behavior analyst, author, special educator and worldwide consultant, spoke to and collaborated with our community during a special presentation, as well as our faculty during an important Teacher Professional Development Day. Ms. Minahan’s presentation on “Practical Strategies for Reducing Anxiety or Oppositional Behavior,” was a very insightful topic to discuss and dissect! Thank you to the Mr. & Mrs. Fairfax F. Pollnow Outreach Fund for sponsoring this wonderful speaker.
Feedback from our community who attended Ms. Minahan’s presentations included:
“Positive way to look at anxiety.”
We were honored and thrilled to welcome back friend, expert and advocate Rick Lavoie, M.A., M.Ed. in April 2022. Mr. Lavoie has served as a consultant, speaker, author and administrator for children with learning disabilities for over 40 years. His distinguished resume and dynamic speaking was on full display as he spoke to our grandparents and special friends as part of our Grand Day program, then again to our parents and community friends during an evening presentation, and finally, to our faculty and staff as part of a Professional Development Day. His understanding and wisdom on “grandparenting the child who struggles with learning,” as well as “the educator and parent’s role in motivating children who struggle with learning,” were astute and judicial! This event was made possible through the generosity of the Margaret & Richard Riney Family Foundation Outreach Fund.
In May 2022, we were pleased to be joined by Jared S. Blank - speaker, coach, athlete, dyslexic and author - who spoke to our students and our greater community on how running helped propel him through school, in sports operations, fundraising, writing books, coaching and presenting across the country. He shared his story about growing up dyslexic, how running is an essential part of his life and how he completed the longest run of his life - The World Marathon Challenge (seven marathons on seven continents in seven days). He even spent a day with our Motor Skills classes “running the mile” with our students! We are grateful to the Will Cella Family and Ned Marshall Family Fund for making this speaker’s visit possible.
Feedback from our community who were lucky enough to hear Mr. Lavoie speak included:
“Best talk I have ever heard!”
For questions or to learn more about the Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Community Outreach Program, please contact: Director Mary Brotherton at 314-997-4343 or mbrotherton@churchillstl.org
“Helpful, practical strategies that were well delivered with humor.”
“This was the best professional development I have attended in a long time. I am excited to try to implement many of the strategies I learned!”
“Such relevant information that provides a connection for parents of children who are struggling learners.”
4 | VICTORY 2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT
The parent and student education workshops series was highlighted this year by “Experience Dyslexia®.” Parents and community members joined a panel of Churchill teachers and administrators to go through a series of simulations designed to increase awareness of the difficulties and frustrations that those with dyslexia encounter daily. These workshops are insightful and helpful, leading to greater empathy and understanding!
Feedback from this awesome work shop included:
COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENTS
Churchill, led by Director of Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Outreach Program, Mrs. Brotherton, continues to educate and participate in workshops throughout our community to help ALL students, teachers and families understand the struggles of their classmates, students and family members with learning disabilities, as well as to add background knowledge and vocabulary relating to learning disabilities. Since the inception of our Community Outreach Program in 1990, more than 37,500 supporters have been given the opportunity to experience and broaden their understanding of learning disabilities. Our immense gratitude to the following for helping to sponsor these community workshops: Mr. & Mrs. Parker B. Condie, Sr. Fund, Dennis & Judy Jones Family Foundation Fund and the Margaret & Richard Riney Family Foundation Outreach Fund. We are so proud to share this important message with our community!
WILSON READING SYSTEM® TEACHER TRAINING
In addition to training other educators in WRS, Churchill’s Wilson Credentialed Trainers, Susan Howison, Wyndy McRoy, Justin Schwartzman, Jeff Smith, and the recently fullycertified, Mary Beth Hofer, continue to educate themselves and support the growth and development of all teachers through coaching, study groups and workshops, allowing them to deliver Wilson instruction with fidelity to achieve extraordinary student results. They attended the Wilson Trainer Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts in the summer of 2022, expanding their understanding of literacy education, research, legislative issues and Wilson programming.
SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM & WILSON FUNDATIONS® TEACHER TRAINING
For the past two years, Jeff Smith, Wilson Credentialed Trainer, has been working with the kindergarten and first grade teachers at The Arch Community School (TACS), implementing the Fundations® program. Wilson Fundations® provides researchbased materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling and handwriting program. A huge thank you to the Steve and Ginny Orthwein Family Fund, William R. Orthwein, Jr. and Laura Rand Orthwein Foundation and Bill & Sandy Snyder Foundation Fund who helped to sponsor this important school partnership.
Two teachers who worked and trained with Mr. Smith shared the following:
“Fundations has changed the way I teach phonics. My students are recognizing the spelling patterns they have learned in Fundations in environmental and cross curricular print every day. They recognize that they can read that print because of their phonics time. For the first time in my career, every one of my students is doing and ENJOYING authentic reading before the end of first grade!”
“Fundations has helped my struggling students develop phonics skills. They have developed better letter and sound identification, and are able to tap out those letter sounds to blend them together to make words. Having Jeff as our mentor and guide has been invaluable with modeling and answering questions while learning how to teach Fundations.”
“This program helped put me in my child’s shoes. I hope I can recall how I was thinking and feeling in the future when I am working with him.”
“Getting to experience the emotions, stress and anxiety our students feelthis makes me consider how alone our students must sometimes feel.” the 2021-2022 school year, Churchill led:
Mrs. Brotherton at Crestwood Elementary School’s Ability Awareness Day

Mrs. Wyndy McRoy!
In the spring of 2003, Churchill’s Board of Trustees created the John D. Valentine Award for Teaching Excellence as a special tribute to the memory of John Valentine, a past parent, Board member and dedicated Churchill supporter. Each year this award is presented to a Churchill teacher who exemplifies the best of teaching.
Congratulations to Churchill’s 2022 John D. Valentine Award recipient and current Wilson® Credentialed Trainer and Tutorial Supervisor, Mrs. Wyndy McRoy! For over 40 years, Mrs. McRoy has worked passionately, tirelessly and collaboratively with her students, fellow teachers and administration. She leads with her heart. The word “no” is not in her vocabulary and we “know” we are truly lucky for her service to our school. We celebrate YOU, Mrs. McRoy! School Year
