I am a self-taught needle felt artist who specialises in realistic, personalised miniature animals made out of wool fibres. Each ‘miniature’ is created with love and immense attention to detail - I often work using photographs of pets to ensure I capture their features and personalities perfectly. From dogs and cats to birds and bees… even pandas and turtles, I am able to make a mini version of any animal. If animals aren’t your thing, I can make other decorative items such as bunting, lettering, imitation pebbles and more…

TV R E C O M M E N DAT I O N CALL MY AGENT! Netflix, S1-4 (2015-2020)

The late, great director Alfred Hitchcock would be crucified in the current 'Me Too' movement, but he knew a great deal about casting, agents and actors. Back in the 1970s, Hitchcock wryly observed that 'Disney has the best casting. If he doesn't like an actor, he just tears them up.' He also said that 'puns are the highest form of literature' and Call My Agent! is full of them. Yet the stars of this show are quite the opposite of cartoons. Each lead character is finely drawn and acutely relatable, whether you are new or familiar with the competitive film industry.

Fragile egos, unbridled passions, fears, desperation, terror, temper tantrums... and that's just the agents! The intricacies, internal politics and machinations of the agents and their clients is shown in excruciating, identifiable detail. Piquant, spicy and special, this series makes you want to visit 'The City of Love'... just for the sheer decadence of it all (although French critics have deemed CMA 'too Parisian' in the past). Maybe this is the reason I adore it so much.

Call My Agent!'s copious famous guests also seem happily willing to poke fun at themselves, which is chicly unique. A sense of the ridiculous film etiquette shines through, as each French star shares a knowing wink to the viewer.

Deftly handling the delicate subjects of sexism, ageism and racism, Call My Agent! is utterly refreshing. The show encapsulates a masterclass of emotions, where - despite absolute chaos, scandal and adversity everyone at ASK somehow ends up smelling of roses. We might appreciate that agents remain the true unsung heroes in a difficult business. Also, that their role is vital, but just the beginning for actors - who still have to be persistent, proactive, do their homework and work very hard ongoing. It's a tough, competitive field after all.

Call My Agent! is the rare type of show that only the French seem to make, with glorious views of the city, plus salacious detail on the acting industry. It delivers a dose of cinematic sanity, populated by outstanding actors.

A welcome respite in these insane times.

Overall, this captivating cast and crew bring a well-researched, acutely observed insight into the Agency business - recognisable world-wide.

THE READING ROOM A LITTLE LIFE Hanya Yanagihara

A Little Life follows the lives of four NYC students from college to middle age. What seems superficially to be a witty look into New York life becomes a 720 page nosedive into unspeakable trauma, somehow remaining a beautifullywritten story of friendship and true, unbridled love. It’s a heart-breaking paradox. I finished it over a month ago and still find myself thinking about it.

When I ventured into my local bookshop with this book in mind, I was relieved to find I’d managed to grab their last copy. As I paid, three employees delivered a warning, something I’ve now learned is almost a rite of passage for those who have completed the A Little Life journey. They find themselves pushing it insistently onto others, but not without a warning: ‘Prepare to cry. Seriously.’

A Little Life is split into seven parts, beginning by following the four friends equally; Malcolm the architect, JB the artist, Willem the actor and Jude the litigator, before unravelling Jude’s often painful past, with Yanagihara not hesitating to throw you into the deep end – there were multiple scenes I had to take breaks from. Her new book, A State of Fear, is an interesting dip into the mechanics of our governmentʼs use of behavioural science. It certainly helps you to question the way things have been handled over the past year or so and achieves it with humour and personal accounts.

certainly draw you into this heart-wrenching story, even more moving are the moments when Jude, an exceptionally troubled man, receives unconditional love through friendship which he believes he doesn’t deserve. It is not always the long passages detailing extreme human suffering that are the most gut-wrenching, but the subtle nods to its consequences. Yanagihara’s writing style captures both the beautiful moments of friendship and the dark consequences of childhood trauma so perfectly that I was inclined to highlight several passages despite my reluctance to graffiti my pages.

The novel is peculiarly elusive in its temporal setting; Yanagihara neglects to provide readers with cultural or historical signposts. Thus, it seems set in the present, whenever when it’s being read, making it all the more relatable and poignant. There is a surreal quality to the story: can one person’s life really be so awful?

However, just as this question creeps into your mind, Jude’s friends and family uplift even the darkest moments.

Since finishing it, I’ve vowed to myself that I’ll revisit it in the future. I’m curious as to how my response will differ the second time around.

Whilst a book inherently difficult to recommend, I’d urge people to give it a try. Whilst arduous, I believe it an important examination of possibilities and limitations. A Little Life sparked a shift in my perspective, and I can’t wait to revisit the lives of Malcolm, JB, Willem and Jude.

One of the most powerful tools to combat inflammation comes from food.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods 1 Any nutritional expert would encourage you to eat anti-inflammatory foods. They include lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, plantbased proteins (like beans and nuts), fatty fish and fresh herbs and spices.

Fruits & veggies Go for variety and lots of colour. Research shows that vitamin K-rich leafy greens like spinach and kale reduce inflammation, as do broccoli and cabbage.

I imagine many of us are feeling anxious about what our post lockdown world looks like. Of course we all want things to go back to normal but at what costs? What have we already lost as individuals, families, communities?

I myself will admit I feel the pangs of anxiety when I walk down a street and find a bottleneck of people. I hold my breath as I am forced to keep less than two metres away from one or two or more people. I take subtle sips of air when I'm in the clear. How does one get over the fear of crowds? I am still working on that as a matter of urgency. The pandemic has done a number on my mental health and millions of others from school children to vulnerable adults in care homes. We're all working on it.

Here is a little exercise.

Try this. Imagine you are at the tennis - women's final? How would you overcome the anxiety of being in a space with twenty thousand other people? What would you imagine of their inner lives? Like the person who imagines a naked panel at a nerve-wracking interview.

"All the best," one reveller calls out like a greeting card.

"We're with you!" shouts another.

A squeaky voice responds to the opposition (the underdog) "We're with you too!"

You don't think anyone boos at tennis matches, but people probably complain.

"Uh! I just come for pure tennis, I can't stand all the crowd participation..."

The person behind you whispers very loudly to her friend as every match point is ruined by PAG E 1 8

Well maybe with a view of the royal box, you might be distracted for other reasons. You see smartphone cameras zoom in, playing a version of Guess Who as they examine the blurry outlines of the royal family. "Oh, I think it's Kate!" The lady in front whispers to her partner.

Pop.. pop... pop! The sound of mini bottles of prosecco and champagne fizzing freshly among the stalls. A man stumbles past with a beer glass full of water. He sways uncomfortably towards a vacant seat.

The volunteer steward is having firm words with him for blocking the stairwell with his long legs.

What about the couple who keep on getting up, squeezing past your knees to go to the loo or to buy drinks or both? You hold your breath every time they pass.

The anxiety starts to build up again. You steady yourself. Quick, the screen has just picked up a smiling celebrity, dark shades and all. You pat the knee of the person you came with. "Oh look! It's Tom Cruise. Cocktails anyone?"

Failing all of that, if none of that works for you, try spotting the man in a stripy red and white top. Use him as your anchor in any crowd.

It may take all day, but you haven't worried about how closely everyone is sitting at Centre Court for a while. Where's Wally?... Your eyes scan the moving colours of the crowd. "There he is! Found him..." A smile of child-like, ribbon wearing satisfaction creeps across your face.

Exhale. You may still feel anxious in crowds doing a shop at the supermarket, but hopefully you feel a little better now.

I recently gave a talk on 3 Ways to Stop SelfSabotage, and it went well. It was on Zoom, with a slide presentation. Nothing unusual or amazing about that I hear you say. They said it was helpful and interesting, and it resonated with them.

However, these people listening had no idea that I very nearly did not give that talk at all. I so nearly pulled out at the last minute. I was busy finding all the reasons in the book NOT to do it. I had LOTS of very ‘valid’ feeling reasons.

Yet, a part of me knew I wanted to go ahead.

It is an uncomfortable feeling. Ironically, I was self-sabotaging myself.

It was true that I had a bad internet connection and I was expecting an engineer. It was also true that I had a secret feeling that these people would not be interested in the subject.

My confidence was not at a high on this day.

A friend had passed away two days earlier and I had been feeling distracted and sad.

And what did I know about self-sabotage anyway, to be able to help others with it?

So many reasons to hide.

As I put my slides together I realised that the whole situation was just a beautiful illustration of how I can best help people purely by being my authentic self. Because I totally understand how this happens, how it feels, and I experience it myself.

Luckily, I also know what to do and I can go through the steps to change my mindset and get through it! Moreover, I have many years of experience, training and tools to support me.

So I used what I knew and changed my perspective. And it worked! Phew.

Wandering down The Suffolks Market this summer I came across Maeve With Love and got chatting to lovely Maeve who upcycles clothes and designs cards and prints.

Maeve is an artist from West London. She originally studied a degree in Fine Art and then Theatre Costume, where she learnt how to design, cut and construct costumes.

Maeve worked in West End Theatres, her first job was as a Dresser on ‘Guys and Dolls,’ starring Patrick Swayze. As a freelancer she worked back stage at London Fashion Week and in the wardrobe department for touring music concerts for Madonna and Rhianna.

She started painting again and felt a need to pursue the path of being an artist.

During what she would describe as a long journey of trials and challenges, Maeve turned to books on ‘the power of thoughtʼ and guided positive meditations. Being naturally influenced by the spiritual, self improvement movement, she started to add positive words on to her paintings with the belief that they had an energy that may benefit others.

MEET THE OWNER We asked Nicola Kirkman of Dragonfly Decor Mural Designs a few nosey questions...

1. Where are you based?

I moved to Cheltenham in 1999 and I'm now based in a beautiful village not too far from town. I'm lucky to be here and love living in the countryside.

2. How did you get into mural design and painting?

I feel my passion for murals was set in motion at the age of 4, when my Mum and I painted a mural on a living room wall of our new house before the decorating was done. It was so exciting to be allowed to paint pictures on the walls.

3. What do you like to do when you aren't working?

When I'm not painting I enjoy photography, which has always been another passion. I specialised in print and photography at art college and it's continued to be a hobby ever since I was given my first camera back in the 80s.

4. Do you like to cook?

I do like to cook, yes! Great food is so important...

I may not be the best or most organised cook, but I love to have dinner get togethers and BBQs etc where everyone gets involved, we cook together and it becomes a joint effort to bring tasty food to the table.

5. What has been your most important lesson in life that you could share with our readers?

Most important lesson in life... always follow your passion.

6. Which charity is closest to your heart and why?

There are so many important charities, the list is endless... Choosing one is difficult but I'd really like to mention New Start Cat Rescue. Run completely by volunteers and where I found my gorgeous cat Neo. 7. Who is your best friend?

I'm blessed to have so many amazing people in my life that it's tricky to pick the one who is 'the best'. They are all the best at the same time.

Yet another passion of mine... music! Life would be pointless without it. I'll pretty much dance to anything, but my favourite track of all time has to be 'Roadhouse Blues' by Jon Lee Hooker and The Doors.

9. Which mural, anywhere in the world, has inspired you?

I wouldn't say there is any one particular mural that has inspired me, but visiting San Fransisco and every single mural I saw there moved and inspired me. I returned full of excitement and inspired to get paintineg.

10. What book are you reading?

I'm currently reading The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.

Sri Lankan Chicken Curry Serves 4-6 people METHOD:

1

Marinate chicken with salt, chilli powder,

turmeric, cumin, coriander, half the curry leaves and half the lemongrass.

INGREDIENTS:

• Chicken cut into • 1tsp cumin powder chunks and washed • 1/4 tsp turmeric • 1 large onion • 1tsp coriander • 5 cloves of garlic

Mix well and keep in a closed bowl for a few 2 hours.

• 1 inch piece fresh ginger

Heat a good amount of coconut oil and 3 fry the onions, curry leaves, fennel and lemongrass on a medium heat.

• 3 sprigs of curry leaves

As they start getting brown, add fenugreek 4 and then the desiccated coconut.

5 Fry for a few minutes.

Add the marinated chicken and stir well.

Lower the heat, close the lid and cook until 7 juice appears and then add garlic, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom.

Stir well.

8 Add a little water and close lid. Simmer until 9 the chicken is cooked and the gravy has lessened.

• 2 inches fresh lemongrass halved • 2 x 1 inch pieces of cinnamon • 10 cloves • 10 cardamoms (smashed) • 1tbs fenugreek • 1/2tsp chilli powder according to taste

• 1tbs fennel • 1tbs desiccated coconut • 1tbs coconut oil • 1tsp Sri Lankan roasted curry powder • Sea salt to taste (I add quite a lot!)

• 1tsp smoked paprika • 1tsp brown sugar • 1 tin of coconut milk • Squeeze of lime

Add the coconut milk, sugar, paprika powder 10 and roasted curry powder.

11 Simmer for another 5 minutes.

Add a few drops of lime juice after taking off 12 the heat.

Ammi's Strawberry Upside Down Cake METHOD:

1

reheat oven to 180° and line the base of a P 23cm round cake tin with baking parchment.

2 Thinly slice the strawberries, keeping 25 slices for the top of the cake and chopping the rest.

3 Put all the other cake ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix with an electric hand whisk for a few minutes, until thick, creamy and light.

4 Stir in the chopped strawberries, then spread evenly into the tin and arrange the strawberry slices on top.

5 Bake for 30-40 minutes, until golden brown and just firm to the touch.

6 Remove from the oven and brush the top with 2 tablespoons of melted strawberry conserve while the cake is still warm.

7 Leave the cake in tin until completely cooled and then carefully remove.

8 Serve cake in slices with the extra clotted cream
