WELCOM E 1

Chrysalis is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the resources and support needed to find and retain employment. Dear Friend, At the beginning of 2018, the Chrysalis Board of Directors approved the opening of our first new center in 17 years. It was the start of year two of our current Strategic Plan – at this point, the road ahead had truly become the road we are on! Staff rallied together as we started activating our plans to open the Chrysalis Orange County center in Anaheim. Critical early support from the County of Orange, the City of Anaheim, several neighboring O.C. cities, Stand Together, and Disneyland Resort laid the foundation for Chrysalis’ new center. Local individual donors welcomed us by hosting events to introduce us to our new home. Community partners engaged with us about client referrals, local businesses sent us volunteers, and a contract with BCOE and Caltrans ensured that transitional jobs would be available through the launch of an Orange County Roads crew. Our doors opened in mid-November, and two weeks later, bells were already ringing to celebrate new jobs! In tandem with the work being done to bring job-focused services to our new community in

Orange County, our three centers in the Los Angeles area led from the front – doing more and doing better. It was a true inspiration to see our clients, volunteers, and staff arrive at so many record-breaking milestones over the course of one year. During the second quarter, we saw many exciting opportunities for transitional employment grow and come to fruition. Three more Roads crews and a contract with the Venice Beach Business Improvement District were launched, which contributed to us employing 22 percent more clients in transitional jobs than in the prior year. At roughly the same time, LAHSA hired several Chrysalis clients through our Staffing program to work on the annual homeless count’s demographics study. In this report, you’ll meet our client Garrick, who was first employed through Chrysalis Staffing and would go on to become a permanent LAHSA employee and member of a HOPE team. Meet Garrick on page nine. By mid-year, the data revealed that our clients’ successes were on pace to exceed our target by 15 percent – putting us on track to surpass our jobs goal for 2018. As we look back at the

route travelled last year, Chrysalis is proud to confirm that we exceeded our goal and that 2,119 individuals found employment through the use of our program – a 30 percent growth since the launch of the five-year Strategic Plan that has challenged us to double our client job outcomes by the end of 2021! In 2018, the road took us to Orange County, and along the way we met new champions and amazing supporters. We secured new contracts that allowed us to provide more transitional job opportunities for our clients, and we engaged with more employers who are now hiring our clients. But no matter how far we travel, all roads lead us back to our mission… our clients. We are privileged to serve individuals who believe in change and have the courage to pave new roads to their futures. Thank you for being a part of this journey! Your friends in changing lives through jobs,

Jill Baldauf

Anthony is a father, a veteran, and a former gang member and addict. Five years ago, he had the strength to break away from old habits, but he needed additional support in order to successfully navigate his new life. Thanks to his resiliency – as well as the support he received at Chrysalis – Anthony is employed, present for his family, and guiding others on their journeys to self-sufficiency and sobriety as a Drug & Alcohol Counselor.

WHO WE SERVE 3

“My Employment Specialist was one of the most significant people in my journey. She believed in me when no one else did – more importantly, she told me that I mattered and that I could get a job.” -Anthony

Growing up, Cordaro struggled to steer his life in a positive direction. When a 6-year prison sentence stopped him in his tracks, Cordaro was motivated to build a better life for himself and his family. With support from a Chrysalis scholarship, Cordaro secured his driver license for the first time. While working a transitional job with Chrysalis Enterprises, Cordaro was connected to a full-time, permanent job with Larder Baking Company through our Direct Hire program!

HOW WE SERVE 5

“I was excited that somebody else was excited for me to do something productive. I needed that extra push. Nothing was going to keep me from getting a job.” -Cordaro COR E E MPLOYM ENT PRO G R A M Chrysalis’ program includes a few required pit stops – among them, orientation, four job-readiness classes, and one-on-one resume writing and practice interview sessions. For clients like Cordaro, who are navigating their job search with history in the criminal justice system, we also offer a supplemental class called Convictions & the Job Search. However, the way each client’s service plan is mapped out from there is unique to each individual we serve. With individualized support from their Employment Specialist, clients set employment goals and identify areas where Chrysalis can provide

additional support – whether it’s interview-appropriate attire from our resource room, a scholarship to cover the cost of a material need or certification, or access to our on-site counselor. With support from 180 program volunteers and numerous staff, 27,849 hours of core curriculum were instructed, 2,833 resumes were written, and 2,540 practice interviews were conducted in 2018. All of these touchpoints contributed to over 2,100 clients securing employment last year – and of those reached, 73 percent were still working after 6 months.

While Amatullah admits that getting paid to pick up trash wasn’t always her first choice as a way to make a living, she will also tell you that her street maintenance transitional job with Chrysalis Works is helping her stabilize and build a better future for herself. Programs like Breaking Barriers helped Amatullah secure housing, and a scholarship enabled her to obtain her driver license – a step that helped qualify her for a promotion that she eagerly accepted!

STEPS TO SUCC ESS 7

“Before, it was a constant struggle, and now, I have a place to live, I have a job… Chrysalis helped me get on the right path.” -Amatullah

Whether our clients have been out of the workforce for any length of time, are reentering society after time spent in the criminal justice system, or haven’t had the opportunity to experience a formal work environment, a transitional job with one of our three businesses is often the stepping stone they need to move on to permanent work.

This opportunity gives clients the ability to earn a paycheck and develop marketable experience and occupational skills within a closely supervised, supportive work environment while they continue their search for permanent employment.

For more than 25 years, Chrysalis has been connecting clients to temporary and temporary-topermanent jobs with a growing pool of businesses in our community – and an increasing number of employers are taking advantage of our Direct Hire program to find dedicated employees as well.

W O R K S

We all know that it’s easier to find a job when you have one. So for Chrysalis clients who face more significant barriers to reentering the workforce, Chrysalis offers time-limited, paid employment. Yes – we proudly hire our clients!

Through contracts with Business Improvement Districts in L.A. County, we have been employing clients on street maintenance teams for over two decades, providing local communities with street sweeping, pressure washing, and graffiti removal services.

C HRYSALI S ENTERPRI SES

Initially launched in 2016 through a partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Reentry and Caltrans, our Roads program hires reentry citizens to work on freeway maintenance teams. Our partnership with the Butte County Office of Education has expanded the program across Los Angeles and into our newest home in Orange County.

The Los Angeles Regional Initiative for Social Enterprise (LA:RISE) is an innovative, collaborative partnership that unites nonprofit social enterprises like Chrysalis with the City and County of Los Angeles’ workforce development system. Through LA:RISE, clients in our transitional jobs program also receive the support of our partners from the area America’s Job Centers of California (AJCCs) located across the City and County. Chrysalis has been a part of the growing program since its inception in 2015, and last year, we were able to expand the program thanks to funding from the County of Los Angeles’ Measure H initiative, aimed at reducing homelessness across the region.

Garrick struggled to maintain steady employment after years of managing life with a mental illness. Today, he celebrates being the healthiest he has ever been and holding a job that he shares helps bring meaning to years of suffering. After working a transitional job with Chrysalis Staffing, Garrick went on to secure permanent work with LAHSA, serving some of our community’s most vulnerable populations as a Homeless Engagement Team Member.

Myron came to Chrysalis after being disconnected from the workforce – and his family – for more than three decades. It was during his lengthy prison term that Myron decided that the gang and drug culture that surrounded him as a young man would no longer influence his decisions and perspective going forward. Chrysalis stood by Myron as he started a massive game of catch-up with the world and technology as he embarked on beginning a job search in the 21st century. Today, he is employed, happily married, and reunited with his family. Last year, inspired by all he has accomplished, we had the privilege of honoring Myron with the John Dillon Award at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball.

Over a decade ago, Chrysalis’ job-readiness program helped Toni secure steady employment. Thanks to that job, she was able to transition from being homeless in Santa Monica to owning her own home. 10 years later, when Toni was unexpectedly let go, she found herself in a precarious housing situation yet again – and Chrysalis was right where she had left it, ready to help Toni set and achieve her employment goals so she could get back on the road to stability.
