“The Prom” is a work that was written in response to the Itawamba County School District’s (Fulton, Mississippi) 2010 canceling of its prom because 18-year old Constance McMillen had requested permission to bring a same-sex date to the event. The work came into being in response to overzealous parents who had interfered in the functioning of McMillen’s school, insisting on their own shortsighted agenda that was opposed to a changing and inclusive world. “The Prom” was written as a comedy, but the subject carries a valuable message: ALL kids deserve to be loved. It’s simple, really. And yet, many people make it complicated, adversarial, and even hateful.
According to the Human Rights Campaign, hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ youth have quadrupled in states where anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation has passed. The hateful rhetoric, violence and legislation are devastating to the LGBTQIA+ community and the allies that love and support that community.
When we embarked on rehearsals for “The Prom”, Nex Benedict, a 16year old non-binary kid in Oklahoma had just died. Nex was a victim of bullying and bigotry. The loss of their beautiful life could have been prevented. Though tolerance. Through acceptance. Through respect. Through love.
Our call to action is to stand up for those being dehumanized. We need to recognize acts of intimidation, privilege and entitlement. We need to embrace the beautiful uniqueness of one another. Ultimately, “The Prom” will show you how to participate in a world of love, acceptance and empathy. After all, theatre shows us what we can be. My fervent hope is that this show inspires you to accept and respect one another, and embrace that that whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
