FROM THE DIRECTOR

Twelfth Night is a play about unrequited love and identity. Typical in Shakespeare, Viola chooses to disguise herself as a man in order to survive the circumstance she is in. In her disguise, she struggles with playing the part, longing for the freedom of her actual identity and falling in love without being able to act upon it. This play explores the different experiences in exploring gender roles and identities as well as class and societal rank. The play was written for the 12th Night festival, which is the 12th day of Christmas, also known as January 6th. Although I did not want to center the play around what we as Americans now associate with this date, I did want to think about how a post insurrectionist America is affecting our kids. Banned books- including many stories of queer folks, critical race theory, gender identity and even Shakespeare. The overturning of Roe. Anti-gay and trans legislation. What would it be like to flee a place like that and find a place where the arts are revered and nurtured? Viola and Sebastian leave Messaline and never talk about trying to get back home. Their home, their safety is each other. I hope that this play celebrates what we all deserve access to: love, freedom and the pure joy of being able to be exactly who you are.

SYNOPSIS

Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are shipwrecked in the land of Illyria. Both believe the other to be drowned. Viola decides to disguise herself as a man in order to serve Illyria’s Duke Orsino. Orsino is in love with Countess Olivia who is in mourning for her brother’s death. Osinso sends Viola (now named Cesario) to woo Olivia in his stead. Olivia falls in love with Cesario who is in love with Orsino. Olivia’s gentlewoman, Maria, devises a plot with Sir Toby (Olivia’s uncle), Sir Andrew (a knight Sir Toby brought to woo Olivia), Fabian (a servant), and Feste (Olivia’s court clown) to trap Olivia’s head of household, Malvolio. Antonio, an enemy of Orsino’s, saved Sebastian and they are roaming Illyria. Disguise, mistaken identity, unrequited love and trickery ensue.

I enjoy Nordic skiing and running track, as well as traveling, swimming, and spending 4me in nature. I also volunteer at a hospital. I hope to study biology or psychology at the U of M next year. I would like to thank our amazing stage manager and my AMAZING co-head Kendall. SASHA JORDAN (Costumes crew) I like to play the piano and alto sax and read fantasy books. Thank you to Ms. DeNoma for inspiring me to pursue my passions. I hope to study marine biology in college and go to a university near the ocean. THE WASHBURN ARTS COUNCIL PRESENTS THE WASHBURN WHIRL

The Washburn Arts Council is hosting its annual fundraising silent auction and student arts showcase at St. Mary’s Event Center on Saturday, November 18th, 2023. The Washburn Whirl is a muchloved event that helps fund band, orchestra, choir, visual arts, theater and Black Box social justice theater at Washburn High School. The Washburn Arts Council believes in the power of the arts to inspire, captivate, and transform our students and the community.
