Attendance Down at 2023 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The 83rd annual event. which just wrapped up, saw better than 450,000 vehicles pass through during the ten days of the rally, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation

And while that number (458,161) is impressive, it does represent a downturn from crowds of the recent past. Overall, the 2023 figures were down a little more than 40,000 vehicles from the five-year average of 498,282 vehicles. That's down slightly more than 8%.

So what's to blame for the drop in attendance at Sturgis?

The online news site The Messenger says there are two main factors to blame:

"The primary culprit for the declining attendance is that the usual attendees are simply getting older and younger folks are not showing up at the same rate. But weather also may have played a factor."

Crime and crash figures from the rally:

Overall; 11 fatalities in the area surrounding the event.

Injury accidents: 64 (up from 50 last year)

Drunken-driving arrests: 120 (down from 148 last year)

Drug arrests: 401 (up from 251 last year)

Total citations: 1,479 (up from 1,430 last year)

Total warnings: 4,296 (down from 5,288 last year)

Cash seized: $2,005 (down from $4,335 last year)

One Of The Best Kept Secrets For Veterans

One of the best kept secrets on Ft Jackson, SC, is the Sportsman's hunting club! Until 2017 when the Sportsman club was founded by Major General Pete Johnson,. The club did not exist like it is today ! Now With over 200 members, the club meets on the third Thursday of every month at 6 PM for dinner and fellowship. A special speaker is always scheduled to speak to the members. in August south Carolina's own Charles Ruth state biologist will be the gas speaker in September Jim. Stout taxidermist will be the guest speaker. Fort Jackson comprises over 58000 acres of which 70% is open for deer Turkey squirrel and fishing. There are 9 ponds on Fort Jackson for the angler and are stocked with Bream and bass. Last year alone over 158 deer were taken and the year before that 163 dear were taken both bow and rifle hunting are allowed on post. Although we can't compete with states like Colorado and West Virginia for big deer, a few in the 170-190 weight range were taken. Forestry and fish and game on Post keep the training areas where hunting takes place maintained by controlled Burns each year that helps the wildlife to grow and produce. Because burning produces new growth and vegetation. There are over 120 permanent metal stands on Post that a hunter can sign out for on the Ft Jackson. I sportsmen.net homepage. The metal stands are maintained by the Ford Jackson hunting club as well as fish and game. There are twenty two newsstands that are waiting in reserve to be put up also.

Veterans, DOD civilians, contractors ,retired and active military, and reservist are only allowed to hunt on post and pay only $35 per year. Civilian guest invited are also allowed to hunt but must be sponsored by one of the above and are called " Participants". The The cost for participants is a $100 per year or $10 per day to hunt military retirees 64 and over pay only $15 a year coolers. And a cleaning shed are available to process and hang a deer before taking it to be processed. Much of this information can be obtained on the ft Jackson.I sports men. net webpage.

Rolson regulations can also be found on the website governing hunting and fishing and are enforced by the game warden.

It is almost impossible to get lost on post because the forest is divided into fire breaks which will almost always lead you to a main road. We have not had anyone shot or killed during the hunting season and Uber 60 years. The reason is because each hunter picks a Stan he wants to hunt in and no one else is allowed in that area except someone who brings his own. Stand and even then he must be at least 200 yd from the metal stand hunter. It's a full proof system.

We might be the best kept secret on Fort Jackson, But we love our hunting and our post. We are anticipating a big harvest of deer this year.

Current SC Motorcycle Related Information

Fast forward a couple of years and I was working a polling place for soon-to-be Senator John Scott. In 2008 he won the election and become Senator of District 19 which was and is my district. Over the years I could always stop by or ask him to come out to speak to me to work on issues we have. Building Relationships!

Relationships

On August 13, 2023, longtime public servant Senator John Scott passed away. I was shocked to hear this on the local news as I had just talked with him when I called in on a local radio station. He was there with Representative Ivory Thigpen. I discussed some issues at our statehouse and reflected on the years he had served, I smiled when he said he remembered coming to speak with our group some years ago and really liked us. ABATE Relationships!

I first met him in 2006 when I took a day off to go with Reb Richardson to a hearing on the Red-Light bill. I was green as green can be, but Reb was there so what could go wrong? Next thing I knew Reb was up and trying to get to then Representative John Scott. He had made a motion to amend the bill because he felt that mopeds should not be included in the Red-Light bill, well after the sergeant of arms kept Reb out of the side door Representative John Scott went outside and after a few minutes came back in and tabled his amendment.

Several months later I was at the bill signing ceremony taking pictures. Lessons of legislature you always must be present and make relationships. You see when he saw Reb he got up because he knew something was up. Having Relationships!

In February of 2014 we had a bill from the house coming over called Equal Access, and Dennis and I decided to set up a personal meeting in his office to explain why this bill was needed. Dennis and I felt that being excluded from any public garage because we were on a motorcycle was unacceptable. He agreed and said he understood about being excluded as he grew up in the South part of this state and as a child had been excluded from public places also. We had no opposition once it came to the Senate. Critical Relationships!

Last month’s article was all about how you can and should start making these relationships. Life is short and time is limited. Hope that when you read this you understand the importance and go grab last month’s magazine to read how to find your representative and get started. We only have a few months left before the next session starts in January 2024. REMEMBER

IT’S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS!

THE NEW RAINSUIT

Back in late 2021, five brothers and I took a week off work and just went for a ride. While we did have a couple of destinations in mind, the plan was to wake up every day, pick a direction, and roll out.

We started our trip by heading up into Kentucky with plans to visit the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum. Since I am a Christian and Baptist minister, both of those destinations had been on my bucket list for quite some time.

On day two, we toured a giant replica of what Noah’s Ark would look like based on dimensions and building materials found in the Bible. There are no words to describe how awesome this experience was for me! After an early breakfast, the next morning we headed 45 miles north to the Creation Museum. Again, an AMAZING day!

We had discussed our next stop during supper the night before. Ultimately, we decided to ride south to Nashville, TN and pick up the Natchez Trace Parkway.

As we were leaving the Creation Museum, we began to encounter a light drizzle. Always cautious, and seeing rain forecasted in the direction where we were headed, the group stopped and donned rain gear.

My rainsuit of choice is the fluorescent orange and black, twohundred-dollar Harley Davidson version. While I had tried many different rainsuits in the past, this one seemed to work the best. The suit had served me well for nearly ten years, and I assumed it would last another ten.

This was not to be.

Initially, the light drizzle was no big deal. I rode happily along, wiping my face shield every so often so my vision would not be impaired, and was enjoying the ride. Then, the rain began to get worse.

Within thirty minutes, the light drizzle had been replaced by a torrential downpour! Water was ponding on the roadway and visibility was limited to just a few feet in front of the motorcycles. I was beginning to wonder if I would see animals lining up two-by-two and walking back toward the Ark we had left in Kentucky!

At first, as it had always done, my rainsuit was keeping me dry. Then, I began to feel some water creeping through to the seat of my pants. This was somewhat uncomfortable, but not intolerable. Next, water sneaked down my shirt, which bothered me even more. When it was all said and done, I was soaked.

I was still not convinced I needed a new suit. I bought seam sealer, and some kind of spray stuff hoping to repair the rainsuit, but on the very next trip, it failed me again.

Now, I am very frugal… My wife has another word for me, CHEAP!

Because of my lack of wanting to spend another two hundred bucks, I dealt with that leaky rainsuit for the next two years. With every road trip, poker run, and biker benefit, the leaks got worse. Then, on a trip home from Richmond VA, I’d had enough! I was tired of being wet and miserable.

Earlier this year, I walked into the Greenville, SC Harley Davidson dealer with one purpose in mind, to buy a new rainsuit. The sales associate assisted me in picking one out, I walked up to the register, and begrudgingly slapped my card on the counter!

Fast forward to Memorial Day weekend 2023. We were headed home from “Rolling to Remember” in DC in a horrible rain storm, and I was once again nice and dry. Why had I waited so long? Why had I continued down the same path knowing the results would not change? All I had to do was go get another one and all would be well.

The solution to my problem was as easy as buying a new suit, but because I was stubborn and greedy, I refused. When I finally made the change, my ride was so much better.

We as people do this all the time. We willfully continue down the wrong path, fully aware of the disastrous results, until we have made a miserable mess of our lives. Whether it be pride, selfishness, greed, or whatever else, we make no effort to change.

Just as that sales associate directed me to where I needed to go to solve my problem, Jesus Christ stands ready to lead us down the righteous path. No matter how many bad decisions we have made, no matter how long we have run away from him, He stands ready with open arms to lead us to Salvation.

Are you tired of that same old road you’re traveling? Why not make a change? Jesus is waiting to help you live your best life today!

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life!” Romans 6:23

Ride on and stay safe, Dennis Reynolds

"Mechanics say, dead batteries, engine failure, and tire issues have increased with hotter temperatures!"

Daniel Armbruster with AAA says, "Compared to 6 months ago, we’re seeing about a 40% increase in batteries."

Armbruster also states, "When you have a tire driving on the pavement that is well over 100 degrees, if that tire is OVER-INFLATED, it creates extra friction and heat in the side-wall that eventually leads to tire failure. If you’re driving at highway speeds, that could be very dangerous".

The Carolina Miracle League Benefit Poker Run

On July 29th, the Brothers of Rezon of the Masonic Riders Association held a fundraiser for the Carolina Miracle League (CML) at High Voltage Harley-Davidson in Spartanburg, SC. Registration started at 11:00AM with the ride starting at 12:00 noon. For $25.00 per bike, and an additional $10.00 for a passenger, a full afternoon of fun was scheduled. A card was drawn at every stop starting with High Voltage H-D. From there, they would ride to Wings, Etc. in Boiling Springs SC; then to the Torchwood Tavern in Spartanburg, SC; then to Iron Powersports in Inman, SC; and finally to the Mid-City Shrine Club in Welford, SC where all the awards would be presented to the winners. All stops were in South Carolina so helmets were optional.

In mid-2003 the first Exhibition game was held at Duncan Park to showcase the need for a custom-built field with a rubber surface to keep players with walkers and wheelchairs safe. The raised bases and dirt were not a good combination for the players.

Miracle Park, home of the Miracle League, is located in the North Spartanburg Sports Complex on Old Furnace Road in Boiling Springs, SC. The Carolina Miracle League provides children that have mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. There is something about playing the game of baseball that lights up youngsters’ eyes, but for children facing mental and physical challenges, that opportunity can often be a difficult first step. The Carolina Miracle League gives these children the opportunity to get out in the sunshine, and enjoy playing the game of baseball in its purest form.

For 16 years, the Carolina Miracle League has operated under the philosophy that every child deserves the chance to play baseball as part of a team. From children walking unassisted for the first time to the ear-to-ear smiles that accompany hitting a first pitch, miracles happen every game.

I arrived at High-Voltage Harley-Davidson about 10:30AM. After I parked “Miss Vickie”, I walked inside to place a stack of “Carolina Chrome” magazines on the registration table. I also gave my donation at that time. I wasn’t going on the run because I had other plans for the afternoon.

I walked outside to mingle with the other bikers who had ridden in. There were the usual Harley customers who stop in the dealership on a Saturday morning. There was also a man who was from Maryland. He was travelling to Columbia, SC to meet some friends. He just stopped in to buy a T-Shirt.

I talked to a lot of people – many of them were veterans. It’s always good to meet other veterans. We talk about how it was in the military. There have been a lot of changes since I left the Navy in 1969.

They left at about noon heading to Boiling Springs, SC. I hope they had a great ride, and raised a lot of money for the Carolina Miracle League. Those kids deserve everything we can do for them. I volunteer for the Special Olympics whenever I can. It’s very rewarding!

Can I or should I out the same oil in all three holes on my bike?

Neal, that is a very vague and open-ended question. I would have to make assumptions and or a guess to even hope to give you the correct answer. There are a lot of differences between Harley Davidsons from different eras.

You see, motorcycles are frequently given female names such as Ruby, Scarlet, Mamacita etcetera because they often display female characteristics. My point is that I don't know if you ride an older bike with one of those classic names or a new machine more likely to sport a more modern moniker such as Felicia or Karen.

A Felicia or a Karen would be more likely to take the same thing in all three holes. Whereas a Ruby or a Scarlet would probably have to have special lubrication. Certainly, taking the same thing in all three holes was almost unheard of 60 years ago.

We are lucky to have resources available to us today for reliable information. There isn't a manual for women because if there was one there would probably be a paper shortage. But a manual is available for your motorcycle. I always suggest following the recommendations of the manufacturer unless serious modifications have been made.

Having said that I might suggest the same thing applies to women. Follow the manufacturer's suggestions.

In closing I would suggest that if you have a Ruby or Scarlet send me the year and model and I can give you an opinion.

If you ride a Felicia or Karen, oil her up with quality 20W 50 and if she's treating you right, ask for synthetic.

~Dr. Dilligaf

Dr. Dilligaf, He Doc, is it just me or have you noticed a change in the attitudes of the people who ride motorcycles? Pettiness, neediness and entitlement used to be the domain of others. What gives in your opinion?

~Unsettled

Unsettled, I just love a question that asks my opinion. I've always had the same mindset about opinions, there are two that I value. THE ONE THAT I ASK FOR AND THE ONE THAT YOU KEEP TO YOURSELF.

But you asked for my opinion and boy do I have one. There are a lot of good characteristics shared by many Bikers that I absolutely love and appreciate. Generosity, empathy, mutual support and fun-loving come to mind.

Some of the traits seeping into our culture though disturb me greatly. I began riding the streets 50 years ago this summer. From day one I rode as if everyone else on the highway was out to wreck me. That attitude has served me well. I also understood that my bike was overpowered, and I was unprotected. That required me to ride within my skill level, sight

distance and conditions to keep from being injured. Fast forward to today and Bikers whine about grass in the road from a lawnmower. Lawnmowers have been around as long as motorcycles but only recently has there been groups organized against them. If you ride in the mountains on a Friday, the roads look green from everyone cutting their grass.

Motorcyclists also rail constantly about cagers and how they should go to prison if they have a collision with a bike and someone dies. Being unprotected on a bike, most probably with out leathers or a helmet, contributes to death more directly than the cager quite often. Imagine the same collision that killed a friend as a cage-to-cage wreck, and you realize that it could have ended with exchanging information, such as Insurance and phone numbers and it would be the end of it. People who pull out in front of bikes also pull out in front of Church busses and sewer pumping trucks.

I have also noticed that the current crop of riders will often talk about respect and afford little of it to others. They get their feelings hurt, hold grudges, FB slam small businesses, make light of other people's dilemmas and drop friends because of politics, faith or any other petty reason that they can conceive of. In short, they have gone the way of the general public and have become Outrage Addicts. Hyperbole has replaced regular conversation.

You Meet The Nicest People On A Motorcycle

Well, I'm back from boot camp, leave and going to school to learn how to blow stuff up and other things. I've got a '51 Ford pickup, it's a little hot rod, looks cool as hell. I'm living in a beach shack on Ocean Beach, CA. $59 a month rent and about $10 for lights.

I'm heading into town for breakfast; I'm going to meet Rex and Moon at the restaurant, two bikers I met. Did some welding for Rex and did a valve job on his drag bike, I learned about head work from a pro in Michigan. Rex and Moon are both real bikers, as in clubbers, Rex has a 92 cubic inch pan head Weber side draft carb and a nasty cam. Anyway, after we ate, we went to the bike shop next door, over in the corner was a pile of parts, a 1939 Ariel Square Four, well, I got it for $250. The guy promised it was all there, so in the truck it went.

Rat has a hot rod and bike shop on Market St, he let me build it there in his shop. I was going to take lots of stuff down to Tijuana, Moon went with me to Tijuana to get chrome stuff, Rex sent stuff down for the same.

My first taste of pot was with Moon; I fell in love, I got a key for $25 and being a clean-cut sailor boy with a box of chrome parts in my truck I passed right through the border crossing, did this weekly for a while.

Now I have the bike back together; runs like new, been riding it for about a month and this weekend I have a 72 hour weekend, don't have to be back until Monday at midnight!

So I went through the bike last night and it's all ready to roll. Went for breakfast at a cafe down the street and rolled out at 8:30 headed up Mission Blvd., then up the coast for a beautiful ride. At about 45 miles out turned off for a smoke break, there were a few bikes there and a couple of guys walked over to look at my Ariel Four. One was Steve McQueen, he loved English bikes and mine was rare and extra nice! Black and chrome and no leaks anywhere, he invited me to ride with them to a desert town about 70 miles away to a ranch of one of his friends, (hell yes!). Had a great ride, nothing stupid.

There was an awesome party going on at the ranch, lasted late into the night, met a sweet lady a little older than me (I'm just 18 now). The next day we, the girl was going with me, went to the little town for breakfast, great food and no one bugged Steve. And we took the long way back to LA; she's still with me, going to spend a few days at the beach with me.

Steve wants to buy my bike if I sell it, I was shipping out in ten weeks to parts undisclosed so he ended up with it. A few weeks later Steve stopped down to get the bike, I sold it to him for $500. Years later after his death it went for $35,000, he had put 700 miles on it. End of that adventure, shipped out soon after; see you in two years.

Ride free. Ride Safe. Ride for Christ's sake. See you at bike night.
