Foreword
FROM THE MASTER AND THE DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Within weeks of arriving at Christ’s, I was able to announce that we had reached the £50 million target set nine years ago in our Campaign for Christ’s
As a new arrival, I take no credit for this incredible fundraising achievement, the culmination of years of effort. Rather I pay tribute to the sustained hard work of our Development Team, and to the continued generosity of you, our alumni and supporters. Without you, none of the great things happening and about to happen at Christ’s would have been possible. Because of you, in May we will open the first significant new building
on the College site since the 1970s, completing what will now be known as Fourth Court. Because of you, our teaching and research (the foundation of our reputation) goes from strength to strength. And, because of you, we can offer students the bursaries and outreach support they need to succeed.
Thank you so much for being part of this wonderful achievement.
Simon McDonald of Salford MasterFrom the Development Director, Catherine Twilley
It has been a privilege to serve as Development Director over the last fourteen and a half years. When I joined in 2008, the Quincentenary Campaign had just been brought to a close, and thoughts were turning to Christ’s strategic aims and objectives going forward. It became apparent that, in order to achieve these, the College would have to embark on the most significant fundraising campaign in its history, to raise £50m to support all areas of College life. When we were first discussing the scale of the new campaign, it wasn’t clear that it would be achievable, but we were encouraged to think big by our Development Board and by some of our key donors who pledged their support.
We launched the Campaign for Christ’s publicly in 2015 at Lancaster House and I am delighted that this report is able to mark the milestone of £50m raised and can showcase some of the initiatives and developments that have been supported. That the
College is in such good health is due to the support that so many alumni and friends have given. Thank you all very much indeed for believing in us.
I am grateful to all those who provided advice and support, and all those who made financial contributions, I would particularly like to thank members of the Development Board who pushed us to think outside the box and gave us the confidence to move forward. I am grateful to the two Chairs with whom I have worked, Guy Whittaker (m. 1974, Lady Margaret Beaufort Fellow) and Mark Davies (m. 1990), who have been an incredible support to me personally, as well as the College, and I would also like to thank the two Masters with whom I have worked closely during the campaign: Frank Kelly and Jane Stapleton. As I move to St Catharine’s College as their Development Director, I am confident that I leave Christ’s in a much stronger position, and I am excited to see what the College achieves in the future.

CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW
ATTRACTING THE BEST
CHRIST’S INVOLVEMENT IN STEM SMART WIDENING PARTICIPATION BEGUN THANKS TO £20,000 DONATION
Our ongoing pledge, as a College, is that we admit students based on their academic ability and potential, regardless of their background – and then provide them with the financial support that they need to thrive.
Expanding the provisions we have been able to offer has been vital over the course of the Campaign, with around one quarter of our current undergraduates receiving bursary, rent, or top-up support of some kind. This doesn’t even count the increase in other forms of financial aid in response to the pandemic, including provision of new IT equipment, and extra help for those whose financial situations changed. Every donation has been vital for matching these emerging needs.
This period has also seen the formation of several new bursaries, thanks to your generosity. These have ranged from Legacy gifts to endow long-term awards for students from backgrounds personal to the donor’s experiences, to International Awards of £10,000 a year to help reduce the financial impact of Brexit on EU undergraduates.
The Campaign has also been an opportunity for Outreach activities to diversify, giving potential students more chances to visit Christ’s through Subject Taster Days, and new Residentials like Women in Maths and Teach First targeted at different groups underrepresented at Cambridge. Even COVID did not stop this work, with funding allowing essential elements of our programme to move online, including the Low Participation Neighbourhood (LPN) Summer School and our regular admissions talks that were delivered to schools.
Your support for our students at every stage of their time here has been astounding – particularly highlighted by our annual Telephone Campaigns, which have raised almost £2 million for Student Support and Access during the Campaign for Christ’s. None of this would be possible without you.
£60,000
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Donations received for specific Teaching in History, Maths, Economics, Law, Medical Sciences, Engineering, and for general support of the Fellowship.
Christ’s has an incredible reputation for education even within Cambridge, promoting academic rigour and excellence at every level – from undergraduate, to postgraduate, to post-doctoral studies, and even further research.
Throughout the Campaign, you have helped us make this a priority, via provision of mentoring schemes, and offering Research Fellowships to attract bright young academics to enrich College teaching and life for years to come. Further funding has been provided for the J H Plumb Fellowship in History, and the Charles Darwin and Galapagos Islands Fellowship, and College Teaching Officers across disciplines have been retained thanks to support over the past years.
We’ve also been able to fund seminars and research work thanks to the generous commitment of supporters; notable amongst these is the Kennel Fund for Climate Change, which provides for an annual series of Climate Seminars, in collaboration with the Centre for Science and Policy.
Finally, under this heading come the various Scholarship and Travel Awards you have provided, to help students make more of their time at Cambridge, and go further in their studies. Whilst such awards have been set up for varied reasons – a desire to support postgraduate students in their studies, or recognising former Masters through awards for undergraduates in their related disciplines – they have all enriched the academic life of Christ’s.
Indeed, the impact of this Campaign target can be seen in the fact that, since 2018, our students have received more Firsts, by proportion, than any other Cambridge College. The way that travel abroad has inspired our student’s research can be seen later in this report; expanding horizons through dissertation research and conference networking. Meanwhile, that our staff are regularly nominated for, and receive, Student-Led Teaching Awards, demonstrates the way that students appreciate this investment in our academics.
£4.2m
£222,000
SHAPING THE FUTURE
£4.2 million given to our Endowment, for the maintenance and continued running of the College
From the beginning of the Campaign, one of our top priorities has been making Christ’s able to house more students on site: to enable them to be part of College life, and give them easy access to resources for their studies. As postgraduate numbers have increased, to our new target of over 230, this need has increased.
Thus we have been delighted by the fact that, thanks to the generosity of The Yusuf and Farida Hamied Foundation, a new accommodation block called Yusuf Hamied Court will be open to students in early 2023. Due to house sixty-four postgraduates on the Domus site, the project has also led to the restoration of King Street for the Cambridge community, as well as a future income stream from the retail properties included.
The space also feeds into other priorities, with the creation of the Bill Fitzgerald Music Room, named after the well-respected Fellow, which
adds a new practice and performance space in College for students to develop their passions, as well as additional seminar spaces and Fellows’ rooms. These resources will allow teaching to take place in bespoke environments and provide excellent spaces for academics to conduct their research.
Every donation has been so important for realising this exciting new development, encouraging further investment, and enabling Christ’s to meet its commitment to the educational future of our students in every field.
ENHANCING COLLEGE LIFE
OVER £1.2 MILLION RAISED FOR THE REFURBISHMENT OF OUR BOATHOUSE, FIRST BUILT IN 1887
This target funds possibly the most diverse elements of our work, as it is important to Christ’s that all of our students’ education goes beyond the academic, and that they have opportunities to enrich their time here in various fields. From spiritual pursuits, to cultural and social opportunities, as well as sports and societies, we aim to offer something for everyone to participate in.
A capital focus of this Campaign was the provision of resources for students to excel in their extracurricular activities. Many of you will have seen the BlythMcGregor Boathouse on the river, and some will have used its facilities during the Blades Reunions following its opening in May 2018 – it is hard to
overstate the difference it has made to the Boat Club, providing improved women’s facilities, and additional training equipment. But we have also been able to finance other provisions, such as the Blüthner piano in the Chapel for student recitals, and the annual Art Prize to celebrate varied forms of artistic expression. This also made activities more accessible, at every level – for example gifts to the Choir both enabling tours abroad, and also funding those who would not be able to afford to travel and participate otherwise.
This focus on participation was especially important following the COVID pandemic, as your aid allowed students to thrive despite the challenges of Lockdown and social distancing, and remain connected even across the globe. Senior Tutor’s Prizes were one of the many ways we encouraged students to continue to maintain contact with one another, through provision of supplies so that households could socialise in lockdown. Your donations to the General Funds were invested in better WiFi, and streaming equipment for areas like the Chapel, so that the various activities and milestones of a student’s time at Christ’s did not grind to a halt.
It was also thanks to several major donations, totalling over £30,000 towards our Sizars Fund during the early months of lockdown, that we could provide counselling for every student who needed someone to talk to. Other generous support was allocated to our staff, so that even those on furlough received their full pay. Indeed, it is not an exaggeration to say that your contributions were what enabled College life to continue, for all members of our community, over the past years.
LOOKING FORWARD
Primary amongst these is our goal of renovating the New Library and Bath Court, which sit to the SouthEast of the College site. Work here will create a new community hub for students to study and relax in, as well as more space for our Library and Archives collections, providing a much-needed centre for life at Christ’s. Plans for the new building and glass-roofed court have been approved by Council, and we are looking for further funding to match what the College has allocated for the project.
Another aim is developing upon our long-term academic successes, particularly in subjects that Christ’s is recognised for across the University. One aim connected to this is the foundation of an Early Career Research and Teaching Fellowship in Economics, for which we will be looking for £1.5 million in endowment funds. We will also continue
to work on fundraising for our Student Support Initiative and Access Funds, to attract and inspire the best students for our courses.
In the future, under Lord McDonald’s tenure we will be redeveloping College to become more energy efficient, in line with our target to reduce carbon emissions thirty percent by 2030. Through a programme of rolling refurbishments, to be begun later this year, we will be investing in Christ’s infrastructure, something that will only be possible with support for our General Funds.
As we move into this economically uncertain time, your continued commitment is invaluable; Christ’s will remain a world-class educational and research establishment thanks to your ongoing support.
ALTHOUGH THE CAMPAIGN HAS COME TO A CLOSE, THE ASPIRATIONS AND AMBITIONS THAT IT CHAMPIONED WILL REMAIN CORE TO OUR FUNDRAISING IN THE COMING YEARS, AND IS ALREADY INFORMING THE NEXT STEPS IN OUR STRATEGY.Proposed Redesign of Bath Court Economics Teaching at Christ’s
STUDENT SUPPORT INITIATIVE
OUR STUDENT SUPPORT FUND HAS ALWAYS ALLOWED US TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO STUDENTS WHO NEED IT, IN THE FORM OF BURSARIES, SCHOLARSHIPS, TRAVEL GRANTS, AND HARDSHIP GRANTS.
In Michaelmas Term 2022 we took steps to expand this via our Flexible Undergraduate Grants, which streamline the process for undergraduates to draw down funding during their time at Christ’s. Each undergraduate student will have the opportunity to claim up to £400 each year of their degree to fund activities such as language courses, summer internships, extracurricular activities, lab work, and books and study aids.
This comes alongside additional support for those students who most need it, in the form of our generous provision of bursaries and other meanstested funds; making sure that everyone can make the most of their time at Cambridge.
Indeed, every donation to the Student Support Fund makes a real difference to the lives of our students, and allows them to further develop outside of the classroom during their time at College. The testimonials from our students speak to the value of donor support:
W1 winning Blades in May BumpsTESTIMONIALS
Tamsin (m. 2020), in her third year of a Natural Sciences degree, writes “I had the wonderful opportunity last summer to work alongside academics in several different fields all based around entomology (the study of insects). I worked for a month in Oxford, analysing the ground beetle communities present on floodplain flower meadows. This project allowed me to interact with many leading academics in their fields and increased my understanding of which jobs/forms of research I feel more suited to (i.e. fieldwork versus lab work, taxonomic identification versus whole-ecosystem studies). I then also volunteered at the Cambridge Zoology Museum, working behind the scenes within the insects’ collection.”
Georgia (m. 2017), in the final year of a Medicine degree, used funding for her medical elective “… in which I spent 2 months this past summer in St Lucia and Malta in various hospital placements. This was an amazing experience in which I could witness two very different healthcare systems and indeed cultures to the UK. It was a privilege to be
£222,000
able to spend 2 months abroad to really immerse myself in the hospital environment and try to live like a local.”
Fargol (m. 2021), a second year reading English, says “My bursary means that I can continue to push myself academically and personally, without the additional stress of feeling like I can’t afford my time here. It means that I’m able to come out of my first year hopeful, eager to keep reading and growing. It is only with the prospect of this kind of support that I can look forward to a future in postgraduate study, a future dedicated to understanding literature, its sounds and its figures.”
One of our students, who wishes to remain anonymous, writes that “This summer I took part in a prestigious biological internship program, which involved a two-month research placement, followed by an international conference. This placement was truly formative and convinced me to pursue a PhD in a life sciences field.”
TRAVEL AWARDS
Over the past year students who applied for funding for travel over the Long Vacation were able to go abroad once again, and the College was keen to support undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking a variety of activities including language study, summer internships, and field work.
Dominic Brennan (m. 2019) received a PhD Travel Award to attend COP 27 to represent the American Nuclear Society. He writes, “having the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and representatives across the spread of industries, interests, and countries was an invaluable opportunity. Certainly, to even begin to tackle climate change, it takes a world. Promulgating the research being done at Cambridge was just
£222,000
as important as learning what research is being done elsewhere, forming relationships that, together, may effect tangible results greater than the sum of their individual parts. Thanks to the [Monica Kornberg Memorial] Fund, being given the freedom to have these rare discussions opened my world view to considerations I had before been ignorant of, thus enriching not only myself but the implications of my own research.”
Emily Wenban-Smith (m. 2020) spent two weeks in Panama at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, on the Part II Zoology Tropical Field Course. In her own words, “this field course has provided a unique opportunity to interact with researchers working at the cutting edge of tropical ecology and conservation. In addition, we were joined throughout the course by students from Panama and Colombia, who provided valuable insights into Central American biology. Aside from the diverse range of academic experiences and first-hand scientific fieldwork, I feel that I have also made personal and professional connections that will benefit my future career.”
Olivia Flint (m. 2021) undertook a two week language course in Valencia, Spain, staying with a local host family. She writes, “The language course was extremely enjoyable and helpful since I was surrounded by students of my level and above, meaning I was constantly motivated to improve and keep participating. I was particularly happy with the lessons as they were largely conversation-based, so I had ample opportunities to speak, make mistakes, learn new idioms, and understand the nuances of different expressions and registers.”
GIVING DAY
We ran our first Giving Day on 2-3 November 2022; 36-hours during which the worldwide Christ’s community came together to welcome Simon McDonald as Master, share memories of their time at College (some of these quotes are included on the back cover of Pieces,) and to support the student body. The event was a great success thanks to the generosity of our supporters – over 470 donors contributed more than £222,000. The Giving Day focussed on supporting students outside the classroom, raising money for four goals:
• The Flexible Undergraduate Grants scheme mentioned earlier in this report.
• Founding an Access and Outreach Travel Fund for disadvantaged potential applicants.
• The development of our Mental Health Hardship Fund.
• And our General Funds, to help restore these funds following the costs of COVID.
The Giving Day was supported with matched funding from generous alumni donors, as well as a series of milestone challenges based on number of donors reached – raising an extra £4,250 on the day.
Every donation to the Giving Day made a real difference – gifts of £100 and under raised £17,500 collectively, which was nearly the entire £20,000 goal that we had to create an Access and Outreach Travel Fund. Gift Aid on donations totalled over £32,000 alone, demonstrating the transformative impact that such amounts can have. The generosity of all of our donors will ensure that our students, both current and future, will be able to thrive and feel supported during their time at Christ’s. Thank you to everyone who contributed, both by donating and sharing memories of your time at College.

MEMBERS of the Fisher Society
Below is a list of our Fisher Society Members, who have been kind enough to inform us of a Legacy in their Will, and have indicated that they would like to be a part of our Society. All our members are invited to the College for an annual lunch in November, and receive a silver lapel pin badge.
If you have left the College a gift in your Will, and you would like to be included on this list, please contact Sebastian Peel at srnp3@christs.cam.ac.uk Alternatively, if you would like more information, or to have a confidential discussion about your intentions, we would be happy to help you.
