Vorwort Das gemeinsame Projekt der interna­ tional bekannten Künstlergruppe Actus Tragicus, einer 1996 gegründeten und nach einer Trauerkantate von Bach benannten Gruppe von fünf israelischen Comickünst­lern aus Tel Aviv, widmete sich dem Thema Liebe und erschien bereits 2007 als Buch mit dem Titel ‹How to Love›. Im Rahmen von Culturescapes Israel ­präsentiert das Cartoonmuseum Basel nun die Ausstellung und das Buch gleichen Namens und wirft einen Blick auf den Alltag in einem Land, das hierzu­lande vor allem als Schauplatz eines langen und tragischen Konflikts wahrgenommen wird.

Die internationale Karriere von Actus Tragicus beginnt 1998 mit ihrer ersten Ausstellung ausserhalb Israels am Comicfestival Fumetto. Mit ihren im Eigenverlag veröffentlichten, eng­ lischsprachigen Comicalben und Graphic Novels begeistern Mira Fried­mann, Batia Koltan, Rutu Modan, Yirmi Pinkus und Itzik Rennert die Comicfans in Luzern.

Obwohl Comics im Israel der 1990erJahre noch ein wenig beachtetes Medium sind, wagen die Actus-Künstler seit der Gründung des Kollektivs formale und inhaltliche Experimente

und erzählen ihre Geschichten für Erwachsene weit weg vom Mainstream. Sie starten Schwarz-Weiss, ändern stetig die Inhalte und das ­Layout ihrer Alben, drucken zunächst in kleinen Auflagen und legen auch bei der Produktion grossen Wert auf Qualität. Mit dieser Ausrichtung bewegt sich Actus im Umfeld der amerikanischen und europäischen Comickünstler und ihrer unabhängigen Verlage.

Trotz der andauernd schwierigen Situation in Israel sieht sich Actus nicht oder nicht primär als politische Künstlergruppe. Krieg, Gewalt und Terror sind eher der mehr oder weniger sichtbare Hintergrund, vor dem sich Beziehungsgeschichten abspielen. Über diesen Zugang finden Lesende aus aller Welt Einblick in einen israelischen Alltag, der zu keinen Schlagzeilen führt und kaum Platz in den Abendnachrichten findet. Es tut sich die Chance auf, mit unverbrauchten Bildern hinter die Nahostklischees zu schauen, die die Wahrnehmung dieser Region so schablonenhaft machen.

Liebe auf den ersten Blick, grenzenlose Liebe, Sommerliebe, quälende Liebe – über Liebe scheint bereits alles gesagt zu sein. Und doch fragt sich jede Generation aufs Neue: Was kann Liebe? Was ermöglicht sie? Welche

Art von Liebe meinen wir, wenn wir von ihr sprechen? Die fünf ActusKünstler und der zu diesem Projekt eingeladene Zeichner David Polonsky, der als Art Director zusammen mit Ari Folman für den Ani­ mationsfilm ‹Waltz with Bashir› aus dem Jahre 2008 grosse Anerkennung erhielt, nähern sich diesen Fragen: Sechs Perspektiven in sechs Kurzgeschichten, die sich nicht zu einer zusammenhängenden Geschichte zusammenfügen, sondern lose und offen bleiben. Alltägliche, vermeintlich banale Momente erweisen sich in der ersten Geschichte ‹Summer Story› von Batia Kolton als einschneidende Erlebnisse. Die unerfüllte Liebesaffäre eines ­jungen Mädchens auf der Schwelle zum Erwachsensein und das Ent­decken und Verbergen des ersten Verliebtseins.

David Polonsky interpretiert mit ‹L’elixir d’amour› die Geschichte des Barons von Münchhausen neu und stellt die Liebe als Lebenskreis dar.

Dass Menschen private und öffent­ liche Grenzen vergessen können, wenn sie jemanden für sich gewinnen wollen, erzählt die Bildergeschichte ‹Independence Day› von Mira Friedmann. Itzik Rennerts Sequenz ‹Love Love Love› ist wunderbar virtuos gezeichnet und beschreibt eine

schmerzliche, groteske Liebe zum Vater zwischen Anziehung und Abstossung.

Um Selbstliebe und Selbsthass geht es in der Geschichte ‹Your Number One Fan› der mit dem Will EisnerAward ausgezeichneten Zeichnerin Rutu Modan. Darin verdankt ein gescheiterter israelischer Sänger einem weiblichen Fan aus Sheffield in ­England die Chance seines Lebens.

Weder der Rausch des Verliebtseins noch die Schattenseiten der Liebe, sondern ein ganz normaler Tag in Tel Aviv: ‹8.00 to 10.00›, prägnant und ohne Worte gezeichnet von Yirmi Pinkus, zeigt zum Schluss unspektakuläre Momente wohltuender Intimität.

Das Buch ‹How to Love› konnte für die Ausstellung im Cartoonmuseum Basel neu aufgelegt werden.

Preface Love in all facets was the a project of the internationally renowned art­ists’ group Actus Tragicus from Tel Aviv that was formed in 1996 and named after a Bach cantata. The collected works that came out of this project were published in a book called ‘How to Love’ in 2007. Both the exhibition and the book are presented at the Cartoonmuseum Basel as part of the festival Culturescapes Israel in November 2011. The exhibition allows visitors to get a glimpse of everyday life in a country that most people only know for its long and tragic armed conflict.

The first exhibition of Actus outside Israel launched their international career in 1998, at the Fumetto Comic Festival in Lucerne. The audience loved the comics and graphic novels self-published in English by Mira Friedmann, Batia Koltan, Rutu Modan, Yirmi Pinkus and Itzik Rennert.

In the 1990s, comics hardly received any consideration in Israel. Never­ theless, the members of the Actus collective experimented with different forms and unusual topics. Their stories for adults are a far cry from mainstream cartoons. They set out with black and white drawings and kept

changing the focus and layout of their albums, keeping print runs small at first but at a very high standard of quality. With their artistic stance, Actus resembles American and European comic artists and their independent publishing houses. Although the ­situation in Israel remains difficult, the members of Actus do not define themselves primarily as political artists. Rather, the ongoing war, violence and terrorism serve as the backdrop for the relationships of their protagonists. This opens up ways for readers all over the world to gain a glimpse of everyday life in Israel – a life that does not make headlines and is hardly considered newsworthy.

It gives us a chance to look behind the clichés of the Middle East as we know it. Fresh and unspent images replace our cut and dried opinion of the region.

Be it love at first sight, boundless love, a summer love or tormenting love – it seems that everything has already been said about the subject. Yet it is a question that every generation raises anew: What is love able to achieve?

What does it make possible? What kind of love do we mean when we talk about it? The five Actus-artists and their guest David Polonsky approach these questions in their own terms.

Polonsky is a cartoonist who worked as an art director for Ari Folman’s very ­successful animated movie ‘Waltz with Bashir’ in 2008. Together, the six artists offer six different perspectives in six short stories that remain loosely connected and open, and do not merge into one coherent story. In ‘Summer Story’ by Batia Kolton, seemingly mundane moments turn out to have far-reaching consequences. It is a story about the unrequited love of a young girl on the verge of becoming a woman, and about discovering and hiding her first infatuation.

In ‘L’elixir d’amour’, David Polonsky reinterprets the story of Baron Münchhausen, depicting love as a circle of life. In ‘Independence Day’, Mira Friedmann illustrates how ­people can forget their personal and political ­borders if they are determined to conquer someone’s love. Itzik Rennert presents ‘Love Love Love’, a masterfully drawn story about one person’s painful and grotesque love for their father, oscillating between attraction and repulsion.

Love for oneself and self-loathing is the issue in ‘Your Number One Fan’ by Rutu Modan, winner of the Will Eisner Award. In the story, a failed Israeli singer is given the

chance of a lifetime by a female fan from Sheffield, England.

‘8.00 to 10.00’ depicts neither the rush of love nor the dark sides of ­passion, but rather an average day in Tel Aviv.

Yirmi Pinkus manages to convey moments of blissful intimacy with his simple and clear drawings that do not need any words.

We are very pleased that the book ‘How to Love’ was reprinted especially for the exhibition at the Cartoon­ museum Basel.
