Her parents enrolled and activities where her uld be enhanced. As a ed Camp Algonquin and t dance classes.
Jennifer Cheri Campbell was born into a home full of love. From her very first breath, she brought immense JOY to her parents and her brother Eddie Long Jr. In 1968, Jen’s mother married Peter (“Big Pete”) Showers, and the joy she brought was extended to an even larger family which included her siblings, Gail April Carradine and Peter Norvin Showers.
Jennifer’s childhood laid the foundation for her spiritual growth. She was baptized at New Hope Christian MBC in Chicago, IL at the age of 8 by her uncle, Rev. Frank W. Campbell. Her faith in God was strong, which led to her involvement in most all church activities
In addition, she participated in numerous extra-curricular activities, such as the Drama Club, Student Council, Black History Club, Junior Red Cross, The Scroll and The Charmettes (School Newspaper) just to name a few She also made time to sing with The Thompson Community Singers (Tommies) under the direction of the late Rev. Milton Brunson.
Jen-Jen, (Cheri Bop Shalomo, and Venus Oberon), as she was affectionately known to some, graduated as the Class Valedictorian in August of 1968 That same year, she went on to enroll at The University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana. There, she became a member of the League of Ivies, and met her husband, Geoffery Perkins. They later married, and on October 2, 1969 welcomed their only child, Ivy LeNee Perkins Unfortunately, however, their family suffered a traggic devastation, when Geoffery died suddenly in 1972, after an accidental fall.
Jennifer returned to Chicago and attended Malcom X College from 1972 to 1974, while working for the US Postal Service and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 1986, she met and married Michael Gipson and began working as a Counselor for the Gateway Center Drug Treatment Program in Lake Villa, IL , from 1987 to 1988. She matriculated to Langston University in Oklahoma from the Fall of 1988 through May 1991, where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. She remained in Oklahoma, working as a CNA, and served as a Mayoral Candidate for the city of Langston, Oklahoma in 1995.
Due to the failing health of her father Eddie Long, she relocated to Philadelphia, during which time, she worked with the Philadelphia Board of Education as an Elementary School Teacher from 1995 to 2000.
In 2001, Jennifer found her final place of residence in Los Angeles, California where she met her life partner, Michael Johnson Unfortunately, she had a stroke in 2011, which prevented her from working. But from 2005 until her death, she served as a thespian with the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD). As a member of this group, she was privileged to travel to Hawaii and New York City to participate in performances that highlighted social justice reform
Jennifer had an immense passion for spiritual work, and found a church home at the GREATER BETHEL CATHEDRAL in Los Angeles, where Bishop Aaron M Martin II presides She became a devoted member and carried out the divine messages of the church, with her service on the Mother’s Board.
On February 19, 2024, God called home our beloved Jen-Jen. God saw you getting weak, so he did what was best He came and stood beside you and whispered, “come to rest”. We cannot understand it, no matter how we try. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. You wished no one a last farewell, nor even said goodbye You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why.
We love you forever.

You are my Mom, Aunt, my Savior, and now my Angel. Seems like this day came fast and I wasn’t prepared. You taught me a lot… making me the man that I am today. You are in a better place, but I’m thinking that the better place should be here with your loved ones. I’m always going to think about the good and bad times we had. Love you Mother…. Aunt Jen, Suz, Ame. Rest in Paradise.

My name is Nityananda Koree Bell, and I’m a nephew of Jennifer Campbell. Aunt Jen, as I called her, meant the world to me, and it’s very hard to describe the impact she has had in my life with words, because all I have is a heavy heart and teary eyes. Throughout my life, music has played a pivotal role, and sometimes, it becomessoundtrackwhenIdon’tknowwhattosay.WiththepassingofmyAuntJen,I’vebeenleftspeechless andheartbroken.However,I’dliketodedicateasongtoher-asatribute-untilwemeetagain.

The flowers you sent today, the cards you mailed along the way. The services you stopped by to render, the gifts you brought with thoughts so tender. The prayers you said which played a part, in easing the pain that was in our hearts. Each helped us to find that strength to bear, the loss of one we loved so dear. It was to us great comfort indeed, to see you in our time of need. From our broken hearts which you tried to mend, we thank you sincerely again and again, for being such wonderful friends.
Love, Jennifer’s Family
