BEYOND A CULTURE OF CONTEST

TED is a nonproďŹ t organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world‘s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

BEYOND

A CULTURE OF CONTEST

The global system has become a tightly knit web in which a change in any part of the web has significant impacts on the others: wealth, security and welfare of almost all nations are interrelated. While the interdependence and the crises that confront us grow, we are still bound by a system that does not foster cooperation and mutual understanding in order to find better solutions but keeps building walls inside and outside of our heads. Referring to our competitive culture, in which the production of losers and winners is a prerequisite of existence, we decided to invite speakers from all over the world that will suggest new or alternative ways of thinking and acting in a competitive environment, embracing the idea of a culture beyond contest.

KRISTIN ENGVIG Director and Founder of Women‘s International Networking (W.I.N.), Switzerland. Growing up on the turbulent west coast of Norway, surrounded by mountains leading to the open seas, WIN founder Kristin Engvig understood at a young age how important it is for all of us to be connected, and to do something in your life that will leave the world a better place.

CONNECTING TO FLOURISH Kristin Engvig, founder and director of Women’s International Networking and the WINConference will talk to us about the value of connection, relationships and networks for ourselves and others. The power of networking in a feminine, authentic and global way, building relationships with purpose and pleasure. Kristin will tell us, what it means to connect in order to flourish – both on an individual and on a collective level.

STEFAN KLEIN Physicist, Essayist, and Science Writer, Germany. Stefan Klein is one of the most influential science writers in Europe. He studied physics and analytical philosophy in Munich, Grenoble and Freiburg, and earned a doctorate in biophysics. His books have been translated into 25 languages and were best sellers in many countries.

SURVIVAL OF THE NICEST: WHY SHARING PAYS OFF Klein shows how we as individuals benefit from altruistic behavior—and why our society cannot function without it. In an ever more interconnected world, generosity is the means to achieve personal and societal success. Doing unto others enhances our personal satisfaction, improves our health, and even raises our life expectancy. This talk establishes how natural evolution has hard wired humans to work for one another’s benefit – and how cultural evolution works for ever stronger norm of fairness and generosity. Neuroscience has recently demonstrated that altruism activates the same mechanisms in the brain as enjoying a sexual encounter or eating a chocolate bar – and the effects are longer lasting! By contrast, studies now lay to rest the notion that money buys happiness. The key to prolonging contentment in life, Klein shows persuasively, lies in helping others.

GREGORY DAHL Economist and Author, Bulgaria. Gregory Dahl is the author of „One World. One People. How Globalization is shaping our Future“. After studying economics at Harvard, he pursued a 27-year career as an economist and senior official of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

WHAT‘S YOUR FOCUS? REALITY AND HUMAN NATURE The world is facing many problems, such as economic crises, political instability, environmental degradation, climate change, terrorism, growing inequality, and a breakdown in the fabric of society. People see little progress in addressing these problems. But these problems are all man-made, and they could all be addressed if people could work together effectively. The real problem, then, is obstacles within us – obstacles that prevent cooperation. Most people would say it is human nature to be competitive and selfish, and therefore discussion of the need for cooperation is simply unrealistic. But there is strong evidence that this is a misperception of human nature and thus a false assumption. By learning to see the positive reality around us, and encouraging others to see and build upon it, we can help people to learn from the crises our present society is creating and contribute to building a new society based on cooperation and mutual help.

MICHAEL KARLBERG Professor of Communications at Western Washington University, USA. Michael Karlberg is a professor in the Department of Communication at Western Washington University. His research examines the struggle to create a more just and sustainable social order in an age of increasing global interdependence. Within this context he has focused on the maladaptive nature of Western cultural codes that normalize conflict and competition in human affairs. He explores this topic in his book, Beyond the Culture of Contest, as well as in numerous articles and other publications.

BEYOND THE CULTURE OF CONTEST: A CRITICAL JUNCTURE OF HUMAN HISTORY Our reproductive and technological success as a species has transformed the conditions of our own existence. The defining characteristic of the age we now live in is global interdependence. Within this context, the prevailing culture of contest is proving unjust and unsustainable. In order to move beyond this culture of contest we need to debunk the myths that perpetuate it. Then we need to exercise constructive agency on three fronts: the education and empowerment of individuals, the construction of radically new institutional forms, and the development of organic modes of community life. But this constructive agency will only be effective if it is informed by a culture of purposeful and systematic learning on each of these fronts.

OSCAR MENDEZ ROSA Co-Founder and Art Director of Refresh Interactive, Netherlands. Oscar Rosa holds two degrees in Marketing and Communication as well as Art Direction and Graphic Design. As co-founder and Art Director of REFRESH INTERACTIVE – a company for online communication and marketing strategy in the Netherlands – he creates unique concepts for clients all over Europe. Oscar believes in the responsibility of a business to contribute to the development and wellbeing of society as a whole.

TRANSFORMING COMPANIES INTO COMMUNITIES Oscar‘s idea worth spreading embraces the idea of transforming companies into communities which opens up new capacities for cooperation and reciprocity in business. Placing the idea of service at the center, a dynamic framework is created, which allows creativity to flow and people to develop on all levels of their being while contributing to a an ever-advancing civilization.

MIKA KORHONEN Values-based Leader and Software Development Manager, Finland. Mika has worked virtually in every role within software development business over the almost twenty years in business. What is unusual, however, is that everything he does is values-driven. Combination of values like trustworthiness and justice, balanced with love, care and moderation, applied in spirit of bravery and integrity describe well his nature as a leader and a manager.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF VALUES AT WORK Becoming a values-based leader is a story about personal growth and learning through action. The story tells about power of values in social transformation and cultural change. It demonstrates results of careful studying and personal mastery, practicing values every day, accompanying and consultation, reflection and knowledge sharing through worldwide networks. And it shows how all of this can bring results within weeks in right kind of environment. It paves a path to influence the world in a positive way through values-based actions at the workplace.

MAXIMILIAN KAMENAR Social Entrepreneur, Austria. He loves everything creative and organizes the Pecha Kucha Night Vienna, a networking event for creative people. At the moment he lives in Vienna and works as a social entrepreneur.

REMIXINHAMBANE - SHARING TALENT AND INSPIRATION BEYOND BORDERS Maximilian will tell us about a newly created platform that allows talented singers and musicians from underprivileged countries to connect with other musicians from all over the world. By bringing together passion, talent, technological knowledge and support, this platform aims to create a new model on how musicians from underprivileged regions can collaborate with musicians worldwide and how this sharing of inspiration and talent leads to a „fair-trade music product“.

MARJOLEIN LIPS-WIERSMA Researcher, Author, Consultant and Trainer on Meaningful Work, New Zealand. Marjolein Lips-Wiersma is one of the world‘s experts on the topic of meaningful work. In her role as academic she has spent the last 15 years talking to people of diverse occupations, cultures and ages to understand what makes their work meaningful.

MEANINGFUL WORK As human beings we often forget to ask the big questions. Or we make them so big that they seem of little relevance to our daily lives. When we do ask a question about what we did that was meaningful that day, we may be pleasantly surprised. Because to be human is to be in search of meaning. If we find our work meaningful this is a big, if not the single biggest, influence on our motivation at work. It lifts us above the here and now and helps us ask “what really matters here”? In this presentation Marjolein provides a Map of Meaningful Work. It is simple but profound. It is based on solid research and age old concepts. It speaks to you and helps you to understand what is meaningful for others. It does so in simple and direct language. You can speak about meaning in a practical, grounded, pro-active and professional manner rather than complaining “I don’t see the point of this” which often has little effect.

JULIAN MONROE FISHER Explorer and Anthropologist, US/Austria. Julian Monroe Fisher is a noted explorer and an Anthropologist who has conducted expeditions to more than ninety countries around the globe. He is a Fellow with The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) in London and an International Fellow with the British Chapter of The Explorers Club in New York City.

„DREAM BIG AND DARE TO FAIL“ - EXPLORING BEYOND A CULTURE OF CONTEST

The goals and aspirations of explorers have always been all about being the first... In the 19th century Victorian age the foremost goals were such as finding the source of the River Nile and the scramble for Africa between the colonizers to capture at all cost the vast resources of the African continent. By the turn of the 20th century explorers raced for the last uncharted areas. Until today the charge continues as a new age of explorers attempts to be the first. With little unknown areas left to explore, expeditions have become a pure challenge of the physical constitution, the mental state or the gear - solo, self powered and during the wrong season. The performers refer to themsleves as athletes. In other cases they turn into bizarre endeavours - the first to row backwards across the oceans, or the first hairdressers to reach the summit of Mount Everest using only the support of a solar powered blowdryer. But what does being first and winning the prize in exploration really amount to?

PAUL HUGHES Designer and Consultant, Netherlands. Through his ‘10 meters of thinking’ Paul Hughes unrolls stories that create organizational change. This change is an ongoing path where he uses design & branding to pave the way and offer signposts for the journey, which he coaches participants to walk with practical steps.

TEN METERS OF THINKING: THE ABC OF COMMUNICATION Ten Meters of Thinking is a visual/verbal experience where Paul Hughes draws as he speaks. Across ten meters of paper he reveals stories that are used to stimulate individual and organizational change. Storytelling is a timeless art that Paul applies in a timely manner. The subject of this Ten Meters of Thinking is The ABC of Communication. Here Paul will remind the audience about the impact and reach of communication. We therefore all have a responsibility in how we communicate with others. Paul points out what it means to align our communication with our actions and vice versa. Thereby, he offers a practical model that shows the essence of successful communication can be as simple as A,B,C.

VERENA RINGLER EU Strategy and Communications Advisor, Austria. Verena Ringler advises policymakers and stakeholders on the EU‘s future and the EU‘s role in the world. She does this with the conviction that this unique project of sovereignty pooling is perfectly placed to conceive 21st-century governance beyond the nation state. Verena worked for an EU-led diplomatic team in Kosovo and for Foreign Policy magazine in Washington, D.C.

HOW CAN WE SOLVE EUROPE‘S CRISIS? Why do new things seem to happen everywhere—but not in the political life of the European Union? Why does the EU resemble a bureaucratic blackbox, and life outside of it a bustling paintbox? Why are ideas not brought to power? Far away from the decision-making world, Europeans show leadership, talent, and creativity. Every day, thousands of us leave their comfort zones, master complexity, and embrace the future: in orchestra music or organic agriculture, in protest movements and evening schools, in physics and psychology, in think tanks and in companies. To nurture our commonwealth and our social peace, to create a good future, we don’t lack leadership—we rather lack a relationship: between the world of great ideas, and the world of great decisions.

RÜDIGER FOX Transforming Leader, Germany. Following many years in various line functions in international aerospace and automotive groups, he took over General Management functions in which he successfully transformed various big corporations that were in existential peril. His leadership model of “Gross Employee Happiness” is closely correlating with the Governmental Mission of the State of Bhutan, which he studied in detail within the country.

GROSS CORPORATE HAPPINESS - WHAT CORPORATIONS SHOULD LEARN FROM THE KINGDOM OF BHUTAN While GDP became during the past century a recognized measure for a countries wellbeing, recent years have demonstrated that the level of true happiness in a country disconnects from its economic development – having reached a certain minimum threshold. Long before research has confirmed this fact by empiric science, the King of Bhutan has concentrated the entire political focus of the country on a measure called “Gross National Happiness” (GNH). While this model has entered global political discussion in recent years, it has not yet managed to enter the economic world. The concept of “Gross Corporate Happiness” (GCH) is an attempt to transfer the Bhutan model into the corporate world, where the true idea of man has yet been completely ignored in traditional economic teachings.

CLAUDIA KORECK Singer/Songwriter, Germany. Claudia Koreck (25) started her career as a recording artist (SONY Music) in 2007. Since then she has released four albums, received several awards and has sold more than 250.000 albums.

PauL PauL - Poesie aus Leidenschaft, Poetry Slam. ÂťPauLÂŤ is a three-man slam-poetryensemble influenced by spoken word, theatre, cabaret, and rap. The three members are German slam-poets Bumillo, Heiner Lange and Philipp Scharri, each of them highly successful and recommended as individual performers.
