YEAR IN REVIEW Christendom hired new staff members to start the year: alumnus Dan Mitchell ('13) as asst. director of operations, and alumna Colleen Harmon ('13) as director of career and leadership development.

The admissions office hired alumna Catherine Schneider ('16) as the new associate director of admissions.

AUGUST

The Student Life Office hired Peter Blank ('16) and Mark Turner ('15) as the new men's residence director and men's Rome coordinator, respectively.

The faculty welcomed two new members: Dr. Joseph Brutto in the department of political science and economics and professor Michael Hahn in the department of theology.

The newly renovated St. Lawrence Commons was opened, in time for the beginning of the academic year.

SEPTEMBER

Christendom welcomed in the new Class of 2020, raising its enrollment to a record high: 477 students.

All of Christendom's lectures, Faith & Reason Publications, and more were published online at media.christendom.edu.

OCTOBER

Christendom announced its $40 million "Campaign for Christendom." The campaign's funds will go toward a new Christ the King Chapel, the annual fund, and the college's endowment.

YEAR IN REVIEW The entire college traveled to Washington, D.C., for the March for Life, joining U.S. Vice President Mike Pence for the annual event.

JANUARY

The advancement office hired two new staff members: Adam Wilson ('08) as director of annual giving and Susie Twetten as associate philanthropy officer.

The Planned Parenthood clinic protested by Shield of Roses was shut down — the second protested clinic to be shut down in the past few years.

MARCH

Chloe Herrmann competed in and won the Mainland European Irish Dancing Championships in Austria, earning her a trip to the World Championships.

The Crusaders won the first Frassati Invitational rugby tournament, welcoming Ave Maria University and Franciscan University of Steubenville to campus for the event.

APRIL

Crusader baseball returned to the athletic program, playing its first season in the spring.

The new St. Clare's women's residence hall was finished at the end of the semester, ready for residents in the fall of 2017.

MAY

JUNE

Christendom College: national champions. The rugby team played in the Collegiate Rugby Championships in Philadelphia, winning in overtime.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Stephen Foeckler began playing soccer in the first

grade, and hasn't missed a season since. Throughout his Junior and Senior Year at Seton High School, he received several awards and special recognition. He chose to play soccer at Christendom because it gave him the opportunity to continue doing something he loves, while attending a Catholic school of higher education. He says, "It is important not to falter in your determination when you know that you're striving for the good and true." Besides playing soccer, Stephen has also played basketball and baseball.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Anne Nelson has been playing soccer since she was

eight years old. Coming to Christendom, she continued to play the sport she loved. Being a captain has had the largest impact on her, leading the team in playing the game for the honor and glory of God, "restoring all things in Christ both on the field and off." Her outlook on sports has already been summed up by Pope St. John Paul II: "Sports contribute to the love of life, teaches sacrifice, respect and responsibility, leading to the full development of every human person."

Catherine Gaetano led the team in goals scored with 11.

Michaela Pennefather led the team in kills per set with 3.06 and in hitting percentage with .302.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Mary Solitario wasn't always an elite athlete.

Despite playing three sports in middle school, she was, in her own words, "lazy and uninterested in hard work." It wasn't until her high school years that she found a desire to be great in both athletics and academics. That desire carried over into her college career, allowing her to be a two-sport athlete as well as handling Christendom's rigorous core curriculum. "Athletics and academics go hand in hand for me; together they keep both my mind and body occupied and 'in shape'. . .

Athletics provide more satisfaction and fulfillment than people realize." Her spiritual life has also been deepened by sports. "No matter how much my coaches pushed me, it was always me who had to decide how much effort I would dedicate to my sport. And it is the same for my faith.

In the end, it is up to me whether or not I dedicate my time to growing closer to God." Thanks to athletics, she hopes that she can carry over into her life after college the drive, determination, and integrity she learned.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Michael McMahon is a busy man when it comes to

athletics. When he wasn't on the rugby pitch, McMahon could be found on the basketball court — his first love when it comes to sports. McMahon loves the energy of sports games, especially when a large crowd is present, cheering a team on. One of his favorite Christendom sports memories comes from his freshman year, when the Crusaders won their last home basketball game in front of a packed crowd — a moment that made him love the school even more. His favorite part about Christendom athletics, though? McMahon is most impressed by the close bonds scholar-athletes are able to form both on and off the court at Christendom, whether it be with teammates or with professors.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Gemma McMahon, like many, grew up playing sports.

She's played basketball since 8th grade, and she saw continuing that trend at Christendom as "an opportunity to continue doing what I love." McMahon couldn't imagine life without sports, and Christendom offered exactly what she was looking for: a competitive, varsity level sports program that understands the balance between sports and the rest of spiritual and educational life. She has especially enjoyed the friendships and bonds formed with fellow teammates, and also the challenges that come with being a scholarathlete.

Christendom College: 2017 Collegiate College Rugby National Champions.

The Crusaders finished #2 in the Cherry Blossom Tournament, falling only to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Joseph Kuplack played rugby at St. Greg's before

arriving at Christendom, falling in love with the sport and developing the skills to be a leader on the pitch as well. Kuplack was a key part of the Christendom rugby team for years, before eventually becoming team captain his senior year. As captain, Kuplack led the team to its first National Championship, all while striving to be a great student and constant presence at daily Mass when off the pitch.

Bob McCleary coached the softball team for the first time this year.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Bridget Handy has played softball since she was

little, making the sport a big part of her childhood development. After playing varsity in high school, Handy decided to join the softball team upon its return her junior year. Why? Because "if blessed with the opportunity to continue playing the game I love, it would be a loss not to." Handy has been impressed with what the student athletes at Christendom are able to balance and achieve on and off the field, and she finds that the sports at Christendom are emotionally and phusically demanding, but ultimately rewarding and enhancing to Christendom's athletic curriculum.

MEN'S BASEBALL

Jeremy Mersch had one of the best fielding percentages on the team, finishing the year with a .970 average.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Jeremy Mersch has always loved sports. Raised in

Indiana, he believes that the struggles often associated with sports taught him how to persevere in times of pain, both off and on the field, and to always keep a positive attitude. He decided to become a part of the Christendom baseball team because he thought it would improve his character, and he was right. He was a key member of the team, playing second base and pitching. The structure of practice and play helped set his priorities straight off the field as well, especially in the classroom. He hopes to use those skills he learned on the diamond in all of his later life pursuits.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY Several runners qualifed for the USCAA Nationals, competing in November.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT Xochitl Ortega has played a critical role as captain of

the CrossCountry team from the very start. Growing up, she ran cross country and track throughout middle and high school, only to suffer a knee injury which she believes reminded her of the blessing that it is to walk, let alone run. By the time Ortega was a senior in high school, she was an extremely competitive runner and potentially looking to attend a big school to do just that. Last year, Ortega was finally able to see her dream of starting a cross-country team come true. She immediately volunteered to be the captain, and poured all of her talent, leadership, and passion for the sport into building up the team. Through her communication with the coach and athletic director to schedule meets, driving her teammates to the track and to those meets, and motivating everyone with her attitude of dedication and positivity, Ortega demonstrated what it truly means to be not only a scholar-athlete but also a leader at Christendom.

From the Editor's Desk

Leaving Christendom for the summer is a challenge.

For the seniors, it was the end of a four year journey.

Most of them will be traveling back home to begin hunting for a job and it will be some time before they are reunited with members of their class. The juniors watched the seniors receive their diplomas, realizing that it will be their turn in just one year and planning to make next year the best one yet. As the sophomores prepare for Rome, the reality will set in that the class will be separated for the next year or so. The freshmen, happy to be done with their first year at Christendom, are excited to be moving up in the ranks and to continue to grow as a class. Whether we were still tearing up because of Grace Mooney’s valedictory address or because we were done with finals week, it was an emotional parting from the Front Royal campus.

Christendom has that effect on its students. It has the ability to bring a group of people closer whether it be in the classroom, on the stage, on the field or court, or gathered together in the chapel. This academic year students have made many memories, more than can be captured in a single book.

Still, the members of the yearbook staff did their best to capture as much as was possible. Christendom's 2016-17 academic year was a momentous one for the college, and its penultimate one before it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The campus saw many new changes, from the remodeling of the St. Lawrence Commons dining hall to the completion of the new St. Clare's women's residence hall — the first new hall in nearly two decades. The college officially launched the $40 million Campaign for Christendom, which will not only bring us a new Christ the King Chapel that will accomodate our growing campus but will also increase the college's endowment and annual fund, making the college sustainable for years to come. And on the field, Christendom earned a new title it will now hold forever, thanks to the blood and sweat of a few courageous students: national champions.

Throughout all of the coursework, the events, and the changes, the yearbook staff worked tirelessly to make this book a reality, taking the memories that have been made over the past year and applying them to physical pages so they can be remembered for years to come. On that note, I would like to thank my wonderful staff for the work they put into this yearbook. This is a student-run project that could not have been completed without them.

As the campus prepares for it’s 40th anniversary this fall, many big things are on the horizon. Who knows what the year will hold — what new memories we will make, what new things we will learn, what new friends we will meet. All we know is that we will continue on, striving for greatness in all we do, because that is our Christendom legacy. I hope you enjoy looking through this snapshot of the past year’s memories, and we all will look forward to many exciting years to come.

the blue mantle:

THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME

Christendom College was founded under the patronage of Our Lady of Fatima in 1977, who has helped the college grow and flourish in the nearly forty years since. When the Christendom College yearbook was first established in the 1980s, it took on the name "Blue Mantle" in honor of Our Lady.

The yearbook would retain that name for a number of years, before the name changed simply to the "Christendom College Yearbook" later — a title that would stick through the 2012-13 academic year. For the yearbook's triumphant return in 2015-16, it was a no-brainer for the staff to bring the original name back as well, both as a tribute to the college's first yearbook staff and to the college's patroness as well.
