BUILDING THE FUTURE

2015/2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from Christel Time. It is the only asset in the world distributed equally to all. Yet people use this asset very differently. Future events are often influenced by present actions and decisions. But impoverished children seldom have the ability to impact their futures. For them, “future” is often undefined, because life in the present is a constant struggle. As a society, we must invest in transforming their future from a life of poverty into one of self-sufficiency and dignity. Every child deserves a seat at the table of life. At Christel House we are succeeding, as you will see in the pages of this annual report. Our students are excelling academically and are learning the important life skills of planning and preparation—necessary for building a brighter future. Our graduates distinguish themselves through their achievements, comportment, confidence, and by giving back. You, our loyal supporters, are an important part of transforming these lives. Please take a few minutes to enjoy reading about the accomplishments of our students. It will inspire and give you hope. Warmest regards,

Christel DeHaan Founder and CEO

Letter from Raju Shahani Dear Patrons, The mission of Christel House is to help children around the world break the cycle of poverty, realize their hopes and dreams and become self-sufficient, contributing members of society. A Christel House Learning Center is a place for children to grow, to develop and to achieve dignity and success. It is a place where children learn the values of respect, responsibility, independence and integrity, develop a love of learning and maximize their human potential. Children don't choose to be born into poverty. Most grow up never realizing their human potential. Instead, they face physical and psychological trauma, hunger, malnutrition, disease, low self-esteem and lack of opportunity. Christel House is a holistic model designed to transform the lives of impoverished children. We do this by focusing on the whole child. We don't just educate, or feed, or provide healthcare, we do all of these things, from early childhood through early adulthood. We develop the total child. Nothing embodies our work at Christel House India more than this quote by Martin Luther King Jr., “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education”. I am extremely proud of the achievements of our students in the past year – both in academics and in their career aspirations. Christel House graduates are working with the some of the most respected names in the business. Dell, RCI, Northern Trust Bank, ITC, Convergys, Oberoi Hotels, EY, MindTree Consultants, Transguard Dubai and The Jumeirah Group Dubai are amongst our top recruiters. We are in the process of reviewing an efficacy study conducted by Deloitte. The study finds that a student starting in kindergarten at Christel House India is 8 times more likely to successfully complete the grade 12 pre-university examination and 19 times more likely to graduate from a tertiary education program when compared to a Government School student. This is a powerful statement about the return on investment with Christel House India. Thank you for helping transform lives. Christel House Works! Sincerely,

Raju Shahani Managing Director

PARENT

TESTIMONIALS

We were facing severe nancial di culties as my husband couldn't nd a permanent job. We were nding it di cult to pay the school fees and educate our children. But now our nancial burden has reduced as Christel House provides our children with a good education for free. We lived in a very small and dilapidated house, but now we are able to rent a better place. Thanks to Christel House our children also get healthy and nutritious meals. We are immensely grateful to Christel House. –Selvi, Mother of Swathi Grade 6 & Sanjay Grade 1.

My daughter's life has changed after joining Christel House. She can now speak English and is learning so much everyday. My nancial problems have reduced considerably and I do not have to worry about how I will educate and feed my children. My daughter prefers being in school, she has many friends and loves her teachers. We as a family are very thankful to Christel House. –Shankaramma, Mother of Pavithra Grade 2C.

One of my daughters has already passed out of Christel House. She is now working and has helped us reduce our nancial burden greatly. Without Christel House I would not have been able to give my children such a good education or help them study further. I would probably have married my daughters after Grade 10. My dream is to see my second daughter get a degree and work at a big company. I would like to thank Christel House for all their support and help.

ST U D E N T T EST IMO N I ALS I feel proud to say that I am a student at Christel House. I was a 5 year old child when I first came to Christel House, and today I am the school topper, with a score of 97% in the grade 10 SSLC Board Examination. Christel House has provided us with the best infrastructure, excellent teachers, an extensive library, up to date technology and nutritious food, which would otherwise be a distant dream for me. I would like to become a Chartered Accountant and find ways to help others in my community succeed and reach for the stars.

Mary Sharlin, Christel House India,

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my school as it has changed my life. The best lesson I learnt here is 'to care, to share and make a difference everywhere'. Thank you Christel House India, for everything.

School Topper in the SSLC Board Examination for the year 2015 – 2016

Students everywhere can dream about their future, but only a few get the opportunity to fulfil their dreams. I am very lucky to have been a part of Christel House India, the house of opportunities. At this school I was provided with hot meals, books, a pollution-free campus, transport and access to a very good education. The teachers have always been encouraging and have helped me succeed in all my endeavours. I secured a score of 97% in my second year pre-university board examination and am now going to pursue a degree in engineering. I am eternally thankful to Ms. Christel DeHaan, without whom none of this would have been possible. I would also like to thank our donors for their unwavering support and their belief in us. I would also like to extend my appreciation to all the teachers and staff at Christel House India who have worked very hard to shape my future.

COLLEGE & CAREERS PROGRAM The College & Careers Program at Christel House India was officially launched in 2011-12 with the school's first graduating class. Its goal is to support students through the next step of their journey toward self-sufficiency. For about 70% of students, this means undergraduate or professional courses that will fast track their entry into the job market. In addition to facilitating admissions into appropriate higher education institutions, College & Careers counsellors identify internships, apprenticeships and other vocational training opportunities for graduates who do not seek university degrees. Some students proceed directly into the workplace, and many continue their studies while also working full or part-time. Character and values, interpersonal skills and interviewing techniques are important components of the program, giving students the soft skills needed to compete with job applicants from more privileged backgrounds. Scholarships and/or stipends, both from Christel House and other sources, help defray the cost of pursuing higher education. College & Careers preparation actually begins when a student is in middle school. Teachers and counsellors help students explore their preferences and aptitudes, while carefully recording and tracking progress. Each student explores a variety of career options, to ensure that alternatives are in place if one path does not materialize. Parent buy-in is also important to the program's success; counsellors and social workers help parents understand the long-term benefits that will come through further educating their son or daughter.

DREAMS B E COME RE ALI TY

Shiva Sagar, Christel House India, 2012 Graduate

I first walked into Christel House India in the year 2004. One of my most vivid memories of that day are of a bulletin board which said “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; Teach him how to fish, feed him for a lifetime. This saying changed my life. I decided that I wanted to be a teacher and I pursued that dream. Today, that dream has come true. In class, group activities always interested me the most as I could take the lead and help each team member work efficiently. My teachers helped me enhance my leadership capabilities and helped me realize my dream of becoming a teacher. After I graduated from Christel House, I would come back to the school and volunteer. This gave me more confidence and gave me a glimpse into the life of a teacher. When I was in the final year of my engineering degree, the principal of Christel House India offered me a job. I now teach grades 2,3,5,6 and 8 mathematics. I have accomplished my dreams and can now work on reaching greater heights and moving ahead with Christel House. It is now my turn to inspire my students to achieve more and more, all because we have Christel House supporting and assisting us in realizing our goals. I faced different hardships and obstacles throughout my life but they only pushed me to work harder and work towards achieving everything I dreamed of. I have only been able to overcome everything because of the support provided to me by the teachers and staff working at Christel House India and because of the encouragement of my family. I would like to thank Christel DeHaan Ma'am and everyone at Christel House who were involved in shaping me into the person I am today. I would also like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to study and, now, teach at Christel House India.

In supporting Christel House it’s our small way of putting something back into the community. To see these children being educated and brought up to attain a better life makes me very proud. What makes me particularly happy is to see them romping in the pool at one of our resorts and making castles in the sand during Camp Royal – it is a pleasure to behold and worth very rupee of contribution.”

Extremely thoughtful and impressive work is being done especially for children from the less privileged neighborhoods and it is achieving great results. Looking forward to continued association with Christel House India through the Dell Youth Learning Program. You are enabling the community to thrive and shaping youth for tomorrow.”

Leonor Gonzalez – Luft Klaus Luft Foundation - Germany

Nitin Prasad Director & Country Head, PVH (India) Limited

“Six years ago a partnership was born between Christel House in Bangalore and the Klaus Luft Foundation. We committed to support the yearly cost of approximately 40 children. This past year, I had the privilege to visit the school in person and I was very impressed by the professionalism of the faculty, the curriculum, the facilities and deeply touched by the children. It was a humbling experience to visit both the school and the slums where the children live.

“We are guided by the principle that success in business is dependent on putting human issues first. We believe that improving access to high quality early childhood education is essential to providing children with the ability to succeed.

I feel proud of the partnership between Christel House and the Klaus Luft Foundation.”

NEW CENTER IN INDIA - NAYA RAIPUR

School Under Construction

A new Christel House school will open in India in August 2016. The school will open with a strength of 210 students from kindergarten to grade 2 in the first year and will increase by an additional 70 students in kindergarten every year until it reaches its full strength of 910 students from kindergarten to grade 12. The Government of Chhattisgarh, a state in the north central India, is relocating its capital to a new purpose-built city, Naya Raipur. The Naya Raipur Development Authority is building and furnishing a K12 school facility to our specifications on five acres of of government land. Research shows there are more than 15,000 impoverished families in the surrounding villages, with over 800 within walking distance of the planned school. The government will own and maintain the facility. Christel House will enter into a long-term lease for the school, will retain all operational control and will fund all program expenses. We are enormously excited at this opportunity to bring the Christel House model to even more children in India through this innovative public-private partnership.
