For over 27 years, Christel House has been dedicated to empowering children from under-resourced communities to realize their potential and transform their futures. We’ve done this by providing the comprehensive support system they need to thrive, both in school and beyond.
Dear Christel House Friends,
My passion for education and social impact is what led me to this incredible organization. Since arriving, I continue to be deeply inspired by the transformational work that our schools do every day. Christel House changes lives by not only providing a high-quality education, but by also ensuring our students get the holistic support they need to transcend poverty. I have nothing but excitement for the opportunities ahead and am humbled by the responsibility of carrying forward Christel DeHaan’s extraordinary vision.
Christel’s dream was always to expand our reach so more students could access the life-changing opportunities that Christel House provides. That is exactly what we are poised to do. From nine schools across five countries today, we are now on track to add five new schools, both by expanding in our existing countries and launching campuses in two new countries. This includes the January 2025 opening of a new high school in South Africa, and approval of new schools in Mexico and India set to welcome students in 2026. We also launched The Global Pathbuilders Fellowship, which attracted thousands of applications from leaders around the world eager to bring a Christel House school to their home countries. And we further expanded our impact this year by piloting a first-of-its-kind collaboration to extend our successful College & Careers program to four partner schools outside of the Christel House network. You can read more about our expansion plans in this Report.
Since our founding in 1998, Christel House has served over 21,000 students, and the success of our alumni speaks to the power of our model. Beginning on page 8, you’ll find inspiring profiles of graduates who overcame incredible odds to build successful careers and give back to their communities. As we continue to grow, these stories fuel our commitment to ensuring every Christel House student has the opportunity to thrive.
Finally, on a personal note, I want to thank Bart Peterson, who retired as Christel House’s President and CEO in 2024 after five years of dedicated leadership. Bart played an essential role in strengthening Christel House and positioning us for this next chapter of growth and impact. On behalf of the entire Christel House family, we express our gratitude to him for his vision, commitment, and unwavering belief in our mission.
As we look to the future, I am eager to work alongside our passionate school leaders, teachers, staff, students, alumni, board members, and supporters around the world as we build and expand our legacy moving forward.
Thank you for joining us on this journey.
David Harris President and CEO Christel House International
Dear Friends of Christel House,
It is an honor to serve as Board Chair of Christel House International, an organization that has been close to my heart for nearly two decades. Having had the privilege of knowing and working alongside our late founder, Christel DeHaan, I am firmly committed to ensuring that her vision continues to thrive. Christel House remains steadfast in our mission to break the cycle of poverty through education and holistic support, and I am inspired by the unwavering dedication of our Board, leadership, and staff who bring this mission to life every day.
On behalf of the Board, I am delighted to welcome David Harris as our new President and CEO. David’s leadership, vision, and deep commitment to this transformational work will be instrumental in guiding us into the future. We are confident that, under his stewardship, Christel House will continue to expand our impact.
In reflecting on the past year, we are grateful to Bart Peterson for his years of dedicated service. His leadership has strengthened Christel House in immeasurable ways, and his continued service as a member of the Board is a great gift. I would also like to express deep appreciation to Steve Ross for his years of service as our Board Chair and many contributions as the former Chair of the Christel House South Africa Board. His leadership and dedication have played a pivotal role in advancing our mission and impact. Finally, we honor the life of Dennert O. Ware, a long-time Board Member and steadfast supporter of Christel House. Denny’s generosity and commitment to our mission left a lasting impact on our organization and those we serve for which we are deeply grateful.
The Board is truly excited about plans for Christel House’s future. Expansion is part of our continued commitment to reaching more students and communities in need. I commend the Christel House International team for their exceptional work in maintaining support for our well-established schools while simultaneously laying the groundwork for growth. Their tireless efforts ensure that Christel House students receive the education and support necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and success. As we look ahead, realizing these ambitious goals will require the support of dedicated partners who share our vision for transforming lives through education.
We warmly welcome new Board Members: Kameelah Shaheed-Diallo, Juan Ignacio Rodriguez, Don Knebel, Mauricio Manjarrez, Mark Miles, and Shiv O’Neill. We are thrilled to have such accomplished, passionate individuals join the effort to guide Christel House forward.
With thanks for your continued support and optimism for the future,
Martha Lamkin
Christel House is embarking on a bold expansion that will dramatically increase our global reach and transform the lives of thousands more students. With a mission to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty through holistic education, Christel House is not just growing in numbers—we are scaling our proven model to deliver lasting economic mobility for underserved communities. This expansion will enable Christel House to double the number of students we reach:
CURRENT STUDENTS SERVED: 7,084 STUDENTS ACROSS FIVE COUNTRIES
STUDENTS SERVED AT NEW SCHOOLS: 9,200 ADDITIONAL STUDENTS
TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS SERVED ANNUALLY WITH EXPANSION: 16,000+ WORLDWIDE
By expanding in three existing Christel House countries—Mexico, South Africa, and India—Christel House is reinforcing our commitment to high-impact education that goes beyond the classroom. These schools will collectively enroll 2,700 new students, providing life-changing opportunities to communities that need them most.
Building on our established presence in these countries, Christel House will leverage local expertise, community partnerships, and infrastructure to ensure each school’s success.
With more than 21,000 students educated across nine schools in five countries, Christel House is now poised for our next chapter. After months of meticulous research, we identified six potential countries for expansion: Ghana, Kenya, Colombia, Peru, Nepal, and Bangladesh. From this list, we will select two nations where we will launch new Christel House schools.
At the core of this expansion is the Christel House Global Pathbuilders Fellowship—an intensive, two-year program designed to identify and equip visionary leaders in our target regions. We’ve formed more than 50 partnerships with organizations in countries to help us recruit and identify fellowship candidates. The response has been overwhelming, with 2,331 applicants eager to join this transformative initiative. From this competitive pool, we will select two exceptional candidates, one for each of the new schools. These Fellows will receive the strategic, financial, and operational support needed to establish and lead Christel House schools in their respective countries. Ultimately, they will transition into the role of Chief Executive Officer, overseeing all aspects of the school, including fundraising, board relationships, external partnerships, and expansion. The final selection of Fellows and the two expansion countries will be announced in July 2025.
Growing our footprint will also require growing our community of supporters who are committed to empowering the next generation to rise beyond their circumstances and achieve their fullest potential.
As we expand, bringing on partners who believe in our mission will be crucial to ensuring that more students gain access to transformative educational opportunities. By working together, we can make an even greater impact and reach more children who need us most.
As we embarked on an ambitious expansion, we recognized the need for our brand to reflect the depth and breadth of our impact. Our refreshed identity is deeply connected to ‘The House That Christel Built,’ a concept that symbolizes the foundation of opportunity, support, and transformation that defines our work.
This new look is not just a design update—it underscores our commitment to scaling our mission, and reinforces that Christel House is not just a network of schools but a catalyst for breaking the cycle of poverty and creating lasting economic mobility.
By providing a comprehensive support system that extends beyond the classroom, our students have achieved remarkable success, rising above their life circumstances, and breaking the cycle of poverty. Christel House’s steadfast commitment to every child’s long-term success is creating lasting and generational change.

Christel House Mexico graduates are twice as likely to secure formal employment (jobs with benefits) compared to their national peers.
At Christel House South Africa, 95% of recent graduates are employed or continuing their education. This is in stark contrast to the national average, where 1 in 3 youth are disengaged (not in education, employment, or training.)
Christel House Indianapolis graduates have higher median incomes five years after high school graduation than all but one of Indianapolis’s public school districts and charter school networks. They also have the highest earnings among Marion County high schools serving a high percentage of students from low-income backgrounds.
Christel House South Africa was recognized in the World’s Best School Prizes as one of the world’s Top Ten Schools in the category of “Overcoming Adversity.” The T4 Education’s World’s Best School Prize is one of the most prestigious education awards globally. “To be recognized as one of the Top Ten Schools in the world in overcoming adversity is such an honor,” said Adri Marais, Christel House South Africa CEO. “As one of over 15,000 entries, we are particularly proud to be able to lift Christel House, and South Africa, to the world stage.”
Christel House Indianapolis was honored with the top award at the third annual Indiana Educational Excellence Awards Gala, receiving the prestigious “Excellence in Next Level Educational Experiences and Opportunities” recognition. The award highlights the school’s transformative approach to preparing students for the future through a holistic focus on literacy, STEM, and college and career readiness.
Christel House Jamaica celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a two-story high school on the campus. Jamaica’s Minister of Education and Youth, Hon. Fayvel Williams, remarked that Christel House’s dedication to breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering vulnerable children is “nothing short of inspiring.” The new high school is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2025.
For the first time, Christel House is offering our College & Careers program to schools outside of our network. Our Career Coaches are now working with over 1,000 students at four Indianapolis partner high schools: Lawrence North, Lawrence Central, Herron Riverside, and Irvington Preparatory Academy. “We knew that post-secondary counseling services were an area we needed to grow in,” says Jana Goebel, Principal of Irvington Preparatory Academy. “It’s been such a good partnership with Christel House International.”
Like the College & Careers program at Christel House schools, coaching within the collaboration will also provide support for students at the partner schools beyond high school graduation. “That is what makes the program so unique,” says Claire Humphrey, Christel House Career Coach – students tell her, ”’Okay, I’m not going to be on my own.’” She looks forward to continuing the journey with her students. “I’m going to be there for them – and help guide them through it.”
THE SUCCESS OF OUR GRADUATES EMBODIES OUR MISSION. THEIR STORIES ARE AN INSPIRATION FOR ALL.

A 2015 graduate of Christel House Indianapolis, Cailin reflects on the closeknit, supportive environment that shaped her journey. With just 24 students in her graduating class, she valued the strong bonds with classmates and the individualized attention from teachers.
Cailin enjoyed the smaller class sizes at Christel House. ”Growing up with the same people since third grade was like having a few additional family members,” she says. “We also were able to have better individualized connections and assistance with our teachers. At larger high schools that’s not possible.” After Christel House, she earned her bachelors and master’s in social work at the University of Indianapolis. And she did both in just four and a half years! “I came into college with 12 credit hours and was able to graduate early,” she says. “Dual credit classes at Christel House Indianapolis are gold!”
“Even post-five years after graduation, Christel House continues to keep up with me. That’s nice to have someone consistently supporting and checking in on you.”

As a young child, Naseefah vividly recalls how her parents struggled to make ends meet – “watching them stressing as to where the next meal is going to come from,” she says. Enrolling at Christel House and receiving the education, nutrition, and healthcare that is part of the school felt like a dream. “What stood out for me was the nurturing environment that was created since day one. Christel House was truly a home away from home.” The school’s support continued through high school and beyond as she attained her Bcom Degree in Information Systems and Finance. Her education is pivotal to her success and has positively impacted her family. “All the efforts of the staff at Christel House sound too good to be true – but it is!”
