May has always pleasant month in Southgate. We start the month by raising as much money as we can for charity at the May Fair. We owe big ‘Thank You’s’ to everyone who has helped to make the day such a success and we know that the money raised will be put to very good use by the main beneficiary this year, Haven House, Childrens’ Hospice.

With the summer coming we think about holidays, and preparing for them. In recent years I have included in my preparations finding a church near my destination and checking on the times of the services and just turning up. I know that when staying with friends or relatives who have arranged to take you somewhere on a Sunday it’s not always possible to arrange anything.

When I have visited other churches I have been very pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome I have received. I commend it to you. Most churches have websites with photos and times of services. If you don’t have access to a computer there are lots of people at church with smart phones who would be only to happy to look it up for you and help you choose a church.

On the last two occasions that we went abroad on holiday we found ourselves an Episcopal church to go to. Last year we went to the Florida Keys and we found a wonderful church St. Columba, in Marathon.

There were only a few worshippers on the Sunday we choose and they seemed a bit embarrassed that there were not more people to welcome us, but the welcome we received was very warm, and I think all of the congregation made the effort to come over and introduce themselves. The Vicar was lovely and in the end I did let on that I was a priest, it only seemed fair.

The gentleman on official welcome duty that Sunday was a retired scientist and had worked in a field close to the one my husband Philip had worked in. It’s a very small world. It always amazes me that wherever you go in the world the Christian beliefs that we share here are shared there as well, and the liturgies are almost the same. There is always the odd phrase that is different so I tend to look closely at the book so as not to get it wrong, although it wouldn’t matter that much if I did.

At the beginning of the year we were lucky enough to spend just over a week in Malta.

We stayed in Sliema in a hotel overlooking the iconic view of Valletta with its two churches, Roman Catholic and Episcopal.

We choose to go Holy Trinity church in Sliema. It was a brisk walk from our hotel. I had read on their website that visitors were welcome to join the choir while on holiday, so I did for both Sundays. As soon as I arrived I expressed my wish to join the choir for the service and I was quickly whisked away to be found robes to wear and music to read. My mentor was very enthusiastic. She couldn’t read music and didn’t always hit the right note, but she was very enthusiastic and exhibited the true Christian spirit of friendship to strangers.

I have very warm memories of the congregations of both churches. I am not that likely to return to either church but that didn’t stop them welcoming us with true Christian love. I do hope that people who visit our church, either on holiday, or for a family occasion or those who just happen to be passing, experience as warm a welcome as Philip and I did.

A smile and a ‘hello how are you’, don’t cost anything, but they can mean so much. We never know why a person has come to us in the first place. They may be troubled and it may be that a smile is all they can take. We have those aplenty here, so lets share them.

Diamond Wedding Down Under Thank you to Cate Williams for getting in touch with us via our Facebook page to let us know that her parents Derek and Margaret Williams, who were married in Christ Church Southgate on 11th May 1957 and are now living in Australia, are celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary this month.

Congratulations from us all! The couple were married by Reverend Plummer and the marriage was reported in the July 1957 edition of Southgate Parish News, in which the Vicar also launched “The Southgate Parish Church Car Club”. The purpose of the club was to “Show Christian courtesy on the road and endeavour not to arrive at Church with an empty seat in the car.” We’re still trying to do both!

What we do in church and why : Reading the Bible

Christ Church Southgate

In the beginning was the Word Occasionally members of our congregation ask me where our bible readings come from and who chooses them. Those of us who preach do not, except perhaps on very special occasions, get to choose what they will preach upon.

In this way we get to read the same passages of scripture as our Christian brothers and sisters in other Anglican churches and in other denominations too.

The readings for Sundays and also for weekdays come from a list prescribed by the wider church which takes us through the bible in a systematic way.

The list is called a Lectionary.

2) The Psalm - nearly always part of a Psalm is used and at Christ Church it is usually sung by the choir, with a response sung by the whole congregation,

On Sunday mornings at the Parish Eucharist we usually get the following readings; 1) An Old Testament Reading. Between Easter and Pentecost this is replaced by a Reading from the Acts of the Apostles

3) A New Testament Reading usually from one of the Epistles

4) A Gospel Reading. The Gospel reading sets the theme for the Sunday and the other readings are chosen to fit in with this.

At the 8am Eucharist there are two readings.

The Gospel is always read and either the Old or New Testament Reading chosen by the preacher to fit in with the sermon. The Sunday readings are on a 3-year cycle and each church year starts on Advent Sunday.

Year A started in Advent 2016, Year B will start in Advent 2017 and Year C will start in Advent 2018. And then we come around to year A again. In Year A the readings largely come from Matthew’s Gospel, in Year B from Mark’s Gospel and in Year C From Luke’s Gospel. John’s Gospel is usually scheduled to be used at special times of the year such as Easter.

At midweek Eucharists we get two readings, one from the Old or New Testament and then a Gospel reading. Sometimes there is also a Psalm. These are in the Lectionary on a two-year cycle. At Evensong we have a Psalm, an Old Testament Reading and a New Testament Reading. These are also in the Lectionary on the 3-year cycle.

It really is a very good idea for the church to stick to the prescribed readings in the way.

We get to read the bible systematically and also when we get to preach on passages which have be chosen by others it prevents going off on our own hobby horses! I have talked to people who go to churches who do not follow the Lectionary or the Churches’ Year and they tell me this is always a danger and they sometimes do not know where they are.

24 Hour Prayer Vigil All Saints Edmonton 12pm Saturday 3rd June - 9am Sunday 4th June Last year the Archbishops of Canterbury and York made a call to Christians to offer a special time of prayer for the period between Ascension Day and Pentecost 2017. The Johns have bounced and wrestled beds along with Ping & Po Who came from great St Andrews to show the way to go.

Smudge, the dog, has been a star and always well behaved If gossip has it right, by night you’ve often raved?

Danced in the aisles to raise the spirit, put all sorts to rights, Only once has APAP sent us someone who was tight.

There’s a whiff of sadness and sometimes herbal strong Without a home to go to life can go badly wrong.

The guests were great and shared with us tips on how you cope, With a one and only toilet and not a lot of soap.

We’ve had to check for signs of life and soak a blistered toe While play by ear piano riffs pulled feelings to and fro.

The piles of badges on the bench is testament enough Christ Church and St Andrews work well when times are tough There are lots of comrades not mentioned here by name Perhaps they are the lucky ones for Bardic Rhymes are lame.

Let us now give thanks to God that Spring is here and warm And that we had His House to keep us snug in sleet and storm.

We thank Him for the chance to help, to cook to clean and laugh Then walk with some less fortunate along life’s varied path.

For twelve short weeks we knew them and thawed the frosted trust Got to know their stories and how their worlds went bust Sandra gave three splendid months of caring common sense Thank you, for that smiling calm tho sleepless tired and tense.

Thank you Paul and children for lending us a wife.

Now that it’s all over you have back, bog standard life.

It’s the Survivor’s party, and tho The Shelter’s at an end Let’s keep team work with comradeship, on message and on trend.

The sky might have been grey but our 39th May Day Fair was full of colour. Counting is still ongoing as we go to press; we hope to have raised several thousand pounds for Haven House Children’s Hospice, our main beneficiary charity this year.

Clive Woodhouse, Town Crier, led the procession around the arena, which was accompanied by appropriate May Day music performed by “Northern Frisk”.

The fair was opened by Cllr Bernadette Lappage – one of her last duties as Mayor of Enfield. The arena provided a showcase for the dramatic and musical talent of Southgate, with the St Andrew’s Primary School PTA band kicking off the performances led by Fr Edd and his wife Charlotte, followed by Acorn Theatre Company with excerpts from their latest musical ‘Honk’ and concluding with a display by the Enfield Chace Dog Training Club.

Lucy Tobin, aged 9 was crowned as the 2017 May Queen by the Deputy Lieutenant of Enfield Mrs Ann Cable MBE DL. She was supported by Claire Cole, aged 7 as her attendant and Samuel Board, aged 11 as her Page.

We are indebted to all those within the church and our parish who helped to make the fair possible, particularly parents from Walker Primary School who helped with the set up, members of the 2473 Highlands & Southgate Squadron Air Training Corps, Southgate Rugby Club and the Southgate Scout Network for all their support running stalls. Special thanks must go to the Hatters Explorer Scout Unit for running the BBQ and to Peter Godfrey for donating all the meat.

We are already looking forward to next year and our 40th May Day Fair on Monday 7th May 2018. Our main beneficiary will be Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice. Anyone interested in taking part should get in touch by email : churchwardens@christchurchsouthgate.org

Choral Evensong Reception We are delighted to invite you to a special Choral Evensong on Sunday 4th June at 6.30pm, followed by a drinks reception sponsored by choralevensong.org.

We hope to be joined by many special guests from the area and hope that you will be able to join us and bring along as many guests as possible.

The Choir of Christ Church Southgate enjoys a reputation as the finest voluntary liturgical choir in north London and is a true centre of excellence for Church music in the area. The choir consists of 26 dedicated and talented voluntary singers as well as a further 15 boy and girl choristers in the junior choir.

Christ Church Southgate is unique in the area to still sing a full BCP Choral Evensong every Sunday evening at 6.30pm.

As John Rutter, composer for the Royal Wedding and conductor, said, “Choral Evensong gladdens the heart, ravishes the ear, and restores the soul – my favourite way of spending an hour with glorious music in a glorious building.”

A new website - www.choralevensong. org - now makes it possible to find details of Choral Evensong services all over Great Britain and Ireland.

The website’s organisers are planning similar ‘Choral Evensong Receptions’ across the country, and the event in Southgate on the 4th June is one of the very first in launching this new initiative.

The Friends of Arnos Park The Friends of Arnos Park was set up a few years ago to help make Arnos Park a better place.

We are all volunteers who believe in contributing to our local area and community Groundforce Days are run monthly, on the last Saturday of every month between 10.30 and 1.00. The aim is to help Bob, the park groundsman, to look after the park and to work in the Growing Space. Park work includes pruning, weeding, clearing & re-shaping and re-planting neglected flowerbeds. Three flowerbeds have been adopted by volunteers, who plant and look after them. Recently more bulbs have been planted in the woodland area near Morton Crescent.

We have started a Growing Space. This is in the old playground area, which had been disused for about 5 years and was attracting rubbish and illegal activities. In winter 2015 Enfield Council awarded the Friends a grant to turn the area into a community orchard and growing space for fruit and vegetables.

We have 14 fruit trees, and 6 large raised beds for growing vegetables, as well as a beehive and a compost heap. This Spring, local people are being asked if they would like to adopt a plot as their own growing space.

Because of our strong Friends’ Group, Arnos Park was chosen by Enfield Council as the next candidate for a Green Flag Award.

Green Flag is a national award given to parks which meet high standards of maintenance, facilities and volunteer involvement. The Green Flag was awarded to the park last June.

Due to pressure from our group, Enfield Council has also now fully renovated the historic gates at Morton Crescent.

The Friends run a number of community events in Arnos Park, to help local people to feel the park is a place they can all enjoy, and to raise money for park improvements.

A photographic competition last year was part of Southgate Civic Week. The theme was ‘The Joy of Arnos Park’. There were over 40 entries and prizes were awarded at the Summer Picnic. Our annual Summer Picnic takes place in July on the grass opposite the Children’s playground. Over 200 people attended last year, and there are cake & craft stalls and music from local artists. 2017’s picnic will be held on 2nd July 2017 from 2.00 – 4.00 pm.

Our annual Dog Show has gone from strength to strength. It includes a dog competition, with a number of classes, dog agility course, dog themed stalls and demonstrations. This year’s show will be held on Saturday 16th September 2017.

Pumpkin Day is an event focusing on children and is held at the end of October.

The children are involved in a number of free craft activities and pumpkin soup is eaten around a bonfire. It is expected the event will be repeated on the 28th October this year.

Looking at future projects, the Friends are in liaison with Enfield Council to build a permanent dog agility course in Arnos Park, and also distance markers on the paths around the park for runners and walkers.

There is also a plan for a pop up Afternoon Cream Tea in the park on 21st May 2017.

We are always looking for new volunteers to staff stalls at events, bake cakes, help with park gardening, grow vegetables, or be on the Committee.

Building owners proposing to carry out work covered by the Act must give adjoining owners proper notice of their intentions in the way set down in the Act.
