But I think it is very wrong to think of the summer and autumn months as the time when we just tick along, waiting for something to happen. It is the very fact that we have just reenacted the whole astonishing saga of Christ’s passion, resurrection and ascension, leading to the coming of the Holy Spirit, is why there is Ordinary Time. We have an incredible story of love to take out and share to do our bit to help build the Kingdom, which we can do in so many ways as individuals

and by belonging to our community through the pattern of charity lunches or lunch fellowships, or by caring for God’s good creation in the churchyard, or by taking our worship music to St Paul’s and St David’s cathedrals. Last month I heard a Thought for the Day on the radio as the school trip season was starting. The message was to always remember your name and where you come from – we are special individuals who are representing our groups, communities DQGIDLWKV$VLWVD\VLQWKHFRQ¿UPDWLRQ service, God has “called you by name, you are mine” to be his individual and unique representative.

We’ve just come back from a short break in Edinburgh where we met many people who were in search of where they came from and wanted to know which group they really belonged to. Thankfully, there was not a clan Limbert tartan to be seen anywhere, but for once Chrichton didn’t seem so unusual, but the usual issues over spelling did remain! However, as you can see in the picture, I was able to try on a space suit as part of the exhibition of Tim Peake’s spacecraft and equipment at the National Museum of Scotland. An astronaut is the most extreme case we have of going “out there” while knowing your name and where you come from – they represent the entire human race while having their names clearly sewn on their suits. Another thing we enjoyed on our trip was the Royal Yacht Britannia, which very deliberately does not have its name on display – you are expected to know exactly the name and where it comes from! At the other end of the scale, I baptised Samuel and Arianna last week, giving them their names before God as very new members of his church, to carry that membership out in the world even if they never go all round it or even out of it. Knowing who or what you represent when out in the world is really important when we are in these months of solid prayer and action. If you are off on any sort of expedition over the summer, be that a day trip, a world cruise or out into space, remember that you have been called by God to be his – whether that is a signed up Ambassador, or an individual who really loves him. Being his means that you are one of his global church and a member of our community of love, so when you are out in the world be that representative and show his love wherever and whenever you can – even if it is just by simple acts of kindness, that can lead onto much more. Fr Chrichton

dŽďĞĂƉŝůŐƌŝŵ I’ve been singing soprano in the choir for eight years now. It’s a fabulous experience, and I feel very grateful that I found Christ Church on an internet search when I was looking for somewhere to sing Choral Evensong every Sunday. I feel very much part of the Church, and yet I wanted to take a more active role and join in with more than the singing. And so I am delighted to have been elected to serve our Parish and our Church in this new capacity. My journey in the Church began with my baptism as an infant at St John on Bethnal Green, and I attended church every Sunday there and in other churches in the East End of London.

In those days, we used the Book of Common Prayer, and I suspect my deep enduring love of its language is because of that early and constant use. Nevertheless, I did have a bit of trouble working out why we had two hearts: ‘that both our hearts may be set to REH\WK\FRPPDQGPHQWV¶WULFN\IRUD¿YH year-old. 0\¿UVWRSSRUWXQLW\WRVLQJLQDFKRLUFDPH when I was about eight years old - a local vicar hired a music student and started a children’s choir. At Holy Trinity Mile End (lately a carpet warehouse), we had a wonderfully encouraging organist / choirmaster from Nigeria, called Emmanuel, who expected us all to learn the weekly BCP collect and he called upon people at random to recite it at choir practice on Friday. With Emmanuel I learned my love of church music (and collects), and I am thankful.

In those days, all East End churches were very High Church – there were always vast clouds of incense, everything that could be chanted was chanted, and we always seemed to have processions round the church. I loved the theatre of it all, and the way our worship was enhanced; it made sense to me. Also, I still have a particular affection for our Churchwarden Frances Stevenson, rarely seen without a cigarette, who was always there caring for the Church and us all. I dedicate my wardenship to her memory.

Sadly, our family move from East London to Chingford signaled an end to my church singing for a few years – girls and women were not welcome in the choir. But lately, in addition to my delight at the ministry of women as priests and bishops, I am particularly pleased that recent years have VHHQDVLJQL¿FDQWULVHLQWKHQXPEHUDQG quality of mixed choirs performing sacred music. The more contemplative aspects of corporate and personal worship have also attracted me; I spent time learning quiet prayerful UHÀHFWLRQDQGEHFDPHLQWHUHVWHGLQ4XDNHUV exploring their unique ways of waiting on God uncluttered by liturgy or structure of any NLQG,QLWLDOO\LWZDVDVWRQLVKLQJO\GLI¿FXOW sitting still and quiet for an hour, but now I ¿QGWKHGLVFLSOLQHSURIRXQGO\XVHIXOLQRXU EXV\QRLV\ZRUOG7KHRORJLFDOO\WKH4XDNHU approach also kindled a deep yearning for active faith to be located in the world with an emphasis on the words and actions of Jesus. At this time I began volunteering for the &KULVWPDV6KHOWHUUXQE\4XDNHU+RPHOHVV Action. Being with people who have nothing, offering them good food and the hand of friendship, changed my view of the world and my response to it. As well as being worthwhile, this is seriously good fun! Every day is different, and at present my focus is on the safety of respiratory medicines e.g. those used in asthma. My academic training in human physiology has brought a wide range of opportunities. After university at York, I trained as a teacher of Biology and Maths. But the longing for more academic work took hold and I left to complete my doctorate at Corpus Christi College Oxford. Oh joy! They had a chapel choir, and I sang there for four years. My rowing career didn’t last long however – too many cold early mornings. $IWHUZRUNLQJIRUDZKLOHDWWKH1XIÂżHOG Department of Medicine, I went to Edmonton, Alberta as a Fellow at the University. Yes, I found a church choir to sing in! And the snow there was amazing! I went camping in the Canadian wilderness, became an ardent fan of ice-hockey, and had several interesting but ultimately unsuccessful attempts at skiing. But I missed England – mossy walls, puddles, clouds, musty old churches, ancient places, a small horizon, the green landscape, and cricket. So I returned to London and moved from academia to the pharmaceutical industry. Life in London has been busy. I moved to Beckenham, then Ealing, and now live in Walthamstow as a result of job changes. Along the way I have made friends, became D4XDNHUVXQJLQDIHZFKRLUVWUDLQHG as a psychotherapist (in a Benedictine monastery), and last year I took up spoon ZKLWWOLQJDQG/DWLQ2FFDVLRQDOO\,ÂżQGWLPH to go sailing – a little dinghy on the gravel pits in Broxbourne, not a yacht. Importantly, ,ÂżQGP\VHOIYHU\PXFKDWKRPHDW&KULVW Church Southgate. I came for Choral Evensong and stayed because of the people. Being open to difference, in worship and in life, is one of the qualities I love about people at Christ Church.

It is an active inclusive Church that seeks FRQWLQXDOO\WR¿QGZD\VWRHQFRXUDJHRXU spiritual growth and our worshipful lives together. At the same time, we are not simply self-regarding, but we try to connect with our community in a variety of meaningful ways. Taking on the job of Church Warden in Christ Church is an enormous privilege and an equal responsibility. As Wardens, Clare and I are legally responsible for the building, but perhaps more importantly we are elected to serve the Parish and its people including those who don’t come to church. These will be uppermost in my mind. So this promises to be an exciting path in my personal pilgrimage. It’s a little daunting following in Phillip’s footsteps, and I am just picking up the reins with the help of Clare and other members of the PCC. And already many people are offering helpful advice and suggestions – keep them coming please!

>ŝŐŚƟŶŐĂŶĚůĞƐ The lighting of candles or lamps during worship goes back to the Jewish origins of our faith. The lighting of lights in the Temple and synagogues were for practical as well as symbolic reasons. Of course for centuries worshippers in Christian churches and cathedrals needed candles to see what they were doing. Our use of candles and lamps is now very largely symbolic. Their use mainly derives from the lighting of the Pascal candle at (DVWHU$WWKHYLJLORQ(DVWHU(YHQHZ¿UH was kindled outside the church and from it the Pascal candle was lit. This is the very large candle that usually stands by the font or near the pulpit and has the date of the year on it. It symbolises for us the risen Christ. After it was lit it was born aloft into church with the singing of ‘The light of Christ’.

Cathy Dallman Lay Reader

It was then censed and placed near the pulpit where it will remain throughout Easter. During the vigil the people’s candles were lit to symbolise that we all share in the light of Christ. The Pascal candle was lit at all services during the Easter season. During the year the Pascal candle is lit during Baptisms and Funerals. You may have noticed that a person who has been newly baptised receives after Baptism a special baptismal candle lit from the Pascal Candle with the words ‘You have received the light of Christ: Walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as a light in to world to the glory of God the Father.’

The light that burns in the Lady Chapel at all times is to indicate the presence of Christ in the Reserved Sacrament in the aumbry. At the back of the church in the Chapel of Remembrance is a stand for candles that can be lit in prayer for ourselves or someone we care about. The candle goes on burning after we have left indicting that the prayer continues At Candlemas otherwise known as the Feast of the Presentation which falls on February 2nd, we walked in procession carrying candles singing the ‘Nunc dimittis’ in celebration of Simeon acclaiming the infant Jesus as ‘the Light of the World’ And this is where all our use of candles comes from. We continue to remember that Jesus himself said ‘I am the Light of the World’ Cathy Dallman

However, in the Bible; written in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. ‘The Rich Young man’ – ‘Teacher,’ he asked Jesus, ‘What good thing must I do to inherit Eternal Life?’ Jesus replied, ‘There is only One who is good. Keep the commandments if you want to enter life.’ Then Jesus quoted the Ten Commandments. Read this if you like, in Matthew 19.18-19. These Ten Commandments; our foundation of civilisation; written up at the altar – Exodus XX and also in Deuteronomy. This is next to the beautiful painting of our Lord Jesus, presiding at the Last Supper. Also referring to this article’s theme; Jesus asks of us: ‘Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your might – and love your neighbour as yourself.’

Indeed nowadays, we should love our beautiful animals – they have feelings as well as us. Please love them, as you do your brothers and sisters in Christ. We all know indeed that God is Good. Jesus himself by His very nature is the exact representation of God – His Father. (YHUVLQFH,ÂżUVWKHDUGRIKLPÂąDVDFKLOG living next to our beautiful Christ Church – I felt love for this wonderful Jesus – always close to me I felt. The television programme, ‘About Religion,’ spoke about Jesus; and everyone being sinners. I thought that meant – we were in no way to be compared to the beautiful Jesus – perfection in all His ways. Kind, caring, loving, dutiful and good.

What a Ĺ˝ĆŒĹŹÄžĆŒÍŠ Some wine still comes with corks in the top of the bottle! Indeed, some people will only buy wine with a cork‌ but then what do you do when the bottle is empty? Recycling the JODVVKHUHLQ6RXWKJDWHDQG(QÂżHOGLVHDV\ peasy‌ just rinse out the bottle and pop it in the green bin. Metal screw caps also go in the recycling. But what about corks? Most of us probably haven’t thought too much about the corks, at all. We just bin them in the kerbside waste collection. But in fact, even though cork is a natural product, most cork stoppers won’t break down in ODQGÂżOO+RZHYHUFRUNVFDQQRZEHUH cycled. Recorked UK is the UK’s leading, dedicated cork recycling organisation. Partnered with dozens of wine outlets including pubs, restaurants, hotels, off-licences, wine retailers and vineyards (just have a look at their website, at https://recorkeduk. org/ to see a list of these), Recorked UK recycles millions of corks a year, making an environmental, charitable and social contribution to the world around us. The wider public donates the corks and Recorked UK either re-sells or re-gifts them.

$SHUFHQWDJHRIWKHLUSURÂżWVIURPVDOHV is donated to their nominated charities, including FRANK Water , a “safe water and sanitation charityâ€?, Wild Oxfordshire, Friends of Warden Abbey Vineyard (a community project in Bedfordshire), Mind, Business4Life, and When you Wish Upon a Star. Again, details of all these charities can be found on their website. Their work creates employment opportunities for young people across the UK and Recorded UK also gives thousands of free corks to charities and schools for use in craft activities and projects - schools such as Craigowl Primary School in Dundee whose children made items to sell in aid of charity at a winter craft market. Even as individuals, we can now participate in cork re-cycling. Until their cork recycling boxes become more widely accessible feature in our local shops, simply pop your collection of corks – regular or champagne type – into a small box, jiffy-bag, or envelope and post them to: Recorked UK, 11 Cornerhouse Lane, Widnes WA8 9WD. Forrester&Co. Party Wall Surveyors The Party Wall etc Act 1996 provides a framework for preventing and resolving disputes in relation to party walls, some boundary walls and excavations near neighbouring buildings and structures. Building owners proposing to carry out work covered by the Act must give adjoining owners proper notice of their intentions in the way set down in the Act. Adjoining owners can agree or disagree with what is proposed. Where they disagree, the Act provides a mechanism for resolving disputes by appointed surveyors.

Party Wall etc. Act 1996 The requirements of the Act are separate from the need to obtain planning permission, building regulations approval and with leaseholders — often a licence to alter.
