Welcome!

Welcome to the March edition of The Spire from our curate, The Reverend Liz Brown

As I write this the landscape has changed colour, and all around are layers and dustings, of snow. It is beautiful. Beautiful, and cold.

It is wonderful to watch the snow coming down and transforming everything it touches, with a blanket surrounding me and a cup of tea to warm the insides. It makes me extra grateful, too, for the work of our homeless shelter, supporting those for whom the snow is more cold than beautiful, and more dangerous than wonderful.

As we are tempted to withdraw into our homes, blankets and extra layers, the snow also serves to draw our focus more intently to what is going on outside.

It seems to me that the snow coming now, in the middle of Lent, is a helpful reminder that one aspect of Lent, and one which is often neglected slightly, is community. Lent is important in how the church prepares for the central event of Easter, perhaps especially so when Easter was the only time when candidates could be baptised - at the Easter vigil, after a process that could take up to three years. Lent was used as an intense, final stage of preparation for this, not only for the candidates and their sponsors, but for the whole church. It involved prayer, fasting, and acts of charity; Easter was also the time when those who had been excommunicated could be restored to Communion at Easter after acts of penance.

The snow reminds me of the community element of Lent that can be at risk of being over looked or devalued, if we are not careful. On the whole we live in a society that is increasingly individualistic in outlook; we live lives that are more transient and disconnected from others, in many ways.

However, it is clear from the Gospel that part of the call to the Christian life, that we hear and respond to in our own unique and God given way; is to live in a community not only with our fellow Christians but others also.

The homeless shelter points towards this; I’m sure that all the volunteers that have been involved have gained plenty from both the experience and the guests themselves.

With this in mind, thinking and praying about our relationship with one another, I wonder how we can all share knowledge, time and friendship, and whether this could be a fruitful exercise for all of us during this holy time of Lent, and beyond. The relationships we form matter, whether that be within our families, with friends, colleagues, or acquaintances.

The relationships that form with work for others, like with the Night Shelter, matter too - for the volunteers as much as those being helped. Seeing Lent in a way that embraces relationships and communities means we can travel through this Lent all the more easily as a community, learning and growing with one another, shining the light of the soon to be risen Christ out into our world.

Lent can be a time when we try to consciously live lives that are culture critical and therefore shrug off the ‘pass or fail’ mentality that often surrounds us at this time. Lenten observance is not about ‘do it yourself’ salvation, proving to ourselves and others that when we try we can be holy, or not as the case may be. The needs of others, as well as Jesus’s humanity, serve as reminders that we are not just spirits, or spiritual people, but indeed embodied people. That makes me wonder, ‘how can we live out our lives and our faith with a new awareness of this?’ There is plenty that happens around us where individuals and groups are living out there faith, not only benefitting the community but also connecting with one another. The Winter Night Shelter and Street Pastors being only two examples of where faith is a driving factor of wanting to help. All these examples - feeding people, making sure they are safe, and the vastly under-valued skill of simply giving someone your time, help others, and in turn ourselves, see that we are all valued human beings.

I will leave you with the words of Henry Nouwen Who emphasises the importance of community and love of neighbour when he wrote: “When we love God with all our heart, mind, strength, and soul, we cannot do other than love our neighbor, and our very selves. It is being fully rooted in the heart of God that we are creatively connected with our neighbor as well as with our deepest self. In the heart of God we can see that the other human beings who live on this earth with us are also God’s sons and daughters, and belong to the same family we do. There too I can recognize and claim my own belovedness, and celebrate with my neighbors... It is the intimate communion with God that reveals to us how to live in the world and act in God’s Name.”

Music during Holy Week & Easter Richard Brain Director of Music

The music that we sing in Holy Week and on Easter Day is, in many ways, the finest selection of repertoire that the choir sing all year. As the focal point of the Church’s year, it of course demands our best with anthems and hymns to accompany the major themes of the season.

Repertoire for this season personifies the craftsmanship of blending musical artistry with profound religious emotion. Minor keys and chromatic passages set a mixture of sombre moods and deep emotional anguish.

Often both the anthems and hymns we sing in Holy Week do not entirely dwell in sorrow and pain, but in fact look forward to the joy of the Resurrection and the redemption of mankind. The celebratory music of Easter Day is much grander than the celebratory nature of Christmas music.

Repertoire during Holy Week and Easter will include luscious, heavenly sounding polyphonic Renaissance works by Italians composers Giovanni Anerio (c.1560-1614) and Giovanni Palestrina (c.1515-1594), as well as their early English contemporary John Taverner (1490-1545). Taverner’s Anthem, Dum transisset Sabbatum, will draw to a close our atmospheric Vigil service on Easter Eve. It is based on a plainsong cantus firmus, proclaiming the joy Christ Resurrection upon Mary Magdalene discovery of Christ’s empty tomb on Easter Day. We will also be singing works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791), Franz Schubert (17971828), Samuel Sebastian Wesley (18101876) and Sir John Stainer (1840-1901).

Mozart’s Coronation Mass will once again be taking the musical centre-stage of our Easter celebrations with orchestral accompaniment

by Liz Partridge and the Bach Sinfonia.

God So Love the World, comes from Stainer’s Crucifixion and is a particularly fine example of Victorian composition erring on the right side of sentimentality, expressing intense emotive feelings behind the sacrifice of God in giving his Son to the world to bear their sins. Concluding our Easter celebrations will be Wesley’s famous Blessed Be the God and Father, written when he was Organist of Hereford Cathedral. It is one of the most symbolic anthems of the entire Anglican Choral tradition.

Right at the other end of the musical timeline are a number of late nineteenth and twentieth century works by George Dyson (18831964), Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986), and Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945). Ubi caritas and Tantum ergo by Duruflé are often used to support the liturgy for Maundy Thursday.

I am particularly drawn to them because of the manner in which the composer takes ancient plainsong chants and turns them into a personal dialogue with God which, through the beauty of harmony and dynamics, we are communal able to share. Mascagni’s Easter Hymn is an epic short anthem, which comes from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana which premiered in 1890. This anthem is taken from a scene in the early part of the opera where Sicilian villagers are seen celebrating Easter Day. If this were a production, the opening of the anthem would be heard off stage, imitating the sounds of the choir escaping from the church.

The music builds in intensity and volume as the choir (cast) enter onto the stage proclaiming, “We rejoice that our Saviour is living! He all-glorious arose from the dead; joys of heaven the Lord to us giving, all the sorrows of darkness are fled! Alleluia!” The anthem is particularly note-worthy because of the virtuosic soprano solo.

Phillip Dawson Churchwarden After leaving Christ Church Southgate in 1986, Reverend Brian Mountford became Vicar of the University Church in Oxford the country’s most visited parish church. He retired in 2016 after thirty years of ministry there and is currently Acting Chaplain of Corpus Christi College.

In the first years of his time in Oxford, the doors of the church were closed on Good Friday - left ajar for all but the devout few to squeeze through and attend The Three Hours service, while the cafe in the courtyard outside continued to do a roaring trade.

A groundswell of letters and comments from visitors - (particularly from Catholic countries) - saying how surprised they were not to see the church open, led to a change of heart.

The gates were flung wide. Passiontide and Easter music was performed by the city’s choirs and orchestras. The Stations of the Cross were walked. Visitors could come and go as they pleased. More people, no less piety.

In Friday’s Child, Brian has done the excavating for us and presents well known and not so well known works (to me at least!) including poems not obviously associated with Lent or Passiontide (such as the Corpus Christi Carol, which I can’t read without thinking of the music Britten composed and the version of the carol sung by Jeff Buckley).

During the day, Brian invited senior students from local secondary schools to read aloud poems, which he has collated in this anthology, published last week under the title “Friday’s Child.”

Containing 35 poems and concluding with 5 prayers, this anthology is a perfect size for use to aid daily reflections in Lent - but also a wonderful book to enjoy at other times (sometimes I find anthologies can be cumbersome to hold and too dense to engage with).

Winter Night Shelter Report Can you help out in the final three weeks?

Each poem is clearly set out and followed by a commentary written by Brian. This was particularly helpful to gain an insight into some of the more complicated pieces such as John Donne’s “Good Friday, 1613.

Riding Westward.” I preferred it when the commentary was printed overleaf rather than on the facing page - because, despite trying to exercise Lenten self-control, I am very naughty (and lazy!) and if I got stuck trying to ponder the meaning of a poem I glanced over to see what Brian thought rather than stretch my mind to think for myself! A page turn somehow made me less inclined to do that!

This year the Southgate venue for the shelter is St Andrew’s Church, near ASDA Thank you to everyone for making this year’s shelter successful. Now the temperature is turning even colder, we approach our final there weeks.

Many of you have already participated in a variety of ways and will continue to do so - thank you. I would now like to make sure that any volunteers who have so far not been included to let me know which dates and sessions you would like to attend.

As always, given we have three female guests, I am particularly keen to identify ladies who are able to stay over for the night shift:

I tried reading aloud several of the poems (an action we now associate with illiteracy - “silent reading” is a relatively modern innovation in the scheme of things) imagining the young voices reciting the poems in the church. There are some wonderful quotes from the students at the beginning of the book sharing the power of this experience;

The poems certainly do open up discussion and inspire further thought. The anthology is subtitled “Poems of suffering and redemption” and I wondered if it would be valuable to those in a process of meaningmaking in grief, when coming to terms with loss?

“Reading these poems was always an important part of my year. They opened up discussions about doubt, religious doctrine, and human nature for me. This is how young people want to be treated; we never felt patronized, but our voices were, in every sense, heard.”

I found myself thinking of works of art and pieces of music in response to many of the poems and commentaries; Brian’s interpretation of the “tortured victim screaming in pain” in response to Psalm 22 reminded me of Francis Bacon’s series of paintings and sketches of the Crucifixion.

There is much to take away from this little book. Friday’s Child is, as the saying goes, loving and giving.

nextmeal.co.uk Help find the nearest source of food & support for homeless people ‘My Next Meal’ are a group of volunteers who work at the Muswell Hill Soup Kitchen and had the idea to create a site that can direct homeless people to food and support 24/7 in London.

Simply visit www.nextmeal.co.uk and the site will list the nearest charities that provide food and support for homeless people. An excellent website to add to the ‘favourites’ on your phone and use when you are out and about.

What we do in church and why :

Anointing with oil

Many of us have experienced anointing with holy oil at different times. It is used at Baptisms, Confirmations, for people who are sick, facing surgery and at the point of death. At one time it seemed only to be used for people who were dying and so many people thought that this was only time it should be used and were frightened by the idea. However I think that now more people are used to it and have become more accepting.

There are many references to anointing both the Old and New Testaments.

It was used for healing and also to confer God’s blessing on someone, so that they would become holy. Especially relevant to us in the passage in the Letter of James:

“Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.

The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.”

This being so, it is astonishing that the practice is not more general in Christian churches. The oils we use in church are blessed by the bishop at a special service in St. Paul’s Cathedral in Holy Week called the Chrism Mass. (Pictured above by photographer Graham Lacdao). They are then taken back to the churches for use.

There are three different oils which are used on different occasions.

1 - The Oil of the Sick

This is used for anointing the sick and those facing surgery or death.

2 - The Oil of the Catechumens

A Catechumen is someone who preparing to become a Christian and so is used at Baptism.

Donations sought by our Friday Craft Club. Join them in church from 10.15am until 12 noon!

She’s Crafty!

3 - The Holy Chrism

This is used at Confirmation and to anoint priests at their Ordination. It was used to anoint the Queen at her Coronation.

They are all olive oil and the Holy Chrism has scented balsam mixed in.

Anointing is usually done by making the sign of the cross on the forehead with oil. People who are sick or facing surgery can also be anointed on their hands.

A good many years ago when my husband Jack was in hospital, very ill and not expected to live more than a few days I asked our then curate Alan Winton to come and anoint him. Alan read a Psalm, said a prayer and anointed Jack’s head and hands.

Up to then Jack had been very restless, but after the anointing he became much less so and died peacefully about two days later. I am very glad asked for that anointing As with all thing Christian, God takes the ordinary things of this world and makes them special, to make his presence felt in the world. Through the Holy Water in the Font he gives new and eternal life to people. He takes bread and wine at the hands of the priest and returns them as the Body and Blood of Christ. And by means of the Holy Oil, God pours his healing and life-giving Spirit on the Church and her members.

The crafters are busy making bags for the May Fair, and are looking for hand bags to sell as well as other accessories like belts, scarves, and for the men, ties belts and scarves. Please rummage deep in those cupboards, and recycle these items. I know it is early to appeal for these items, but with Easter in between and Spring Cleaning around the corner, we didn’t want to loose this opportunity.

Please put and items you find in a bag and under the table at the back of the church. We still need material, wool, ribbons etc. for our other crafting ideas.

What ever you have, lots or little is always welcome.

Why not come along and join us for coffee and crafting, every Friday between 10.15am and 12 noon. All are welcome!

Lunch Fellowship Wednesday 14th March 12pm

Lent Course - Every Tuesday until 20th March at 8pm

The Lunch Fellowship meets on the second Wednesday of each month. We start with a talk at midday and afterwards share a sandwich lunch and sweet, plus tea or coffee.

The lunch costs £3 and there is a £1 raffle.

“Christ and the Chocolaterie” by Hilary Brand uses the film “Chocolate” as a starting point for exploring issues about God, the world, and what it means to be human.

We will view clips from the film, have discussions and a brief meditation. The sessions will end at 9.15pm with Compline. Join us for our service of the Holy Eucharist at 7.30pm before the course begins at 8pm.

Mothering Sunday Sunday 11th March at 10am Join us for this special including a Sung Eucharist and blessing and distribution of flowers to Mothers, Grandmothers and all the important women in our lives. During the service there will be prayers and the opportunity to light a candle in memory of those no longer with us. All welcome.

Passion Sequence Sunday 18th March at 6.30pm A beautiful sequence of readings and music selected for Passion Sunday, sung by our acclaimed choir.

Palm Sunday Procession Sunday 25th March at 10.00am Sung Eucharist with Procession of Palms.

Eat pudding in aid of charity at our next lunch on 7th April!

Fundraising news Charity Lunch The Social Responsibilities Committee will be holding the next charity lunch in Church House at 12 for 12.30pm on Saturday 7th April. The charities benefiting from the lunch will be the St. Peter’s Trust and Hearing dogs, jointly. The St. Peter’s Trust is the charity which Barbara Clark supports, in memory of her late husband Alan. Maxine Clare of Hearing Dogs will be the speaker on the day and her dog, Walter will be with her.

There will be a large raffle & a Bring & Buy Stall. We hope as many people as possible will join us to make this day a great success.

The cost of lunch is £5 which includes main course, choice of desserts, glass of wine or soft drink followed by tea/coffee. Please put the date in your diary and we look forward very much to welcoming you.

Our January lunch raised £260 for the Loo Twinning Project. Thank you to all who joined us!

Coffee Donations During Lent the coffee money raised in church is for the Bishop’s Lent Appeal, Tackling Homelessness Together. It is so necessary to support this cause at present as there are so many homeless people on the streets, the weather has been so cold & we have heard, in the news, stories of people dying in doorways. We continue to be part of the Winter Shelter helping at St. Andrew’s.

A big Thank You from Chris Howell (on behalf of all the Howell Family!) - to all those who sponsored them in the London Marathon last year. The money has been donated to the Winter Shelter.

Have you have helped at the Winter Shelter and want to carry on supporting our community throughout the year? Why not join Penny from St Andrew’s Church as one of Enfield’s Street Pastors?

Street Pastors Enfield Street Pastors was established in 2006 at the invitation of the Borough Commander. are an ecumenical group of volunteers who patrol the streets on a Friday night.

Our motto is “Caring, Listening, Helping.”

There are four teams in Enfield. My team patrols mainly in Fore Street, Edmonton to Tottenham border. We enjoy a wonderful friendship and fellowship together. We go out on the second Friday of every month, starting at about 9pm and carry on until around 2am.

The time we stay out depends on the time we spend with the people we meet. We offer them all the time they need to talk to us. We need at least three people in each team to go out on patrol, to ensure our safety. We always walk closely together. If six volunteers turn up, we will split into two teams, each patrolling a different side of the street.

We always keep eye contact with each other and we wear high-visibility clothing to identify us.

Pennie Bongomin Street Pastor We begin each session with prayers, asking God to guide, direct and protect us and to bring to us all those who need our help and prayers – and to put the right words in our lips. Each patrol team has a team leader who carries a bag with some essential supplies – including sweets (always welcome!), “spikeys” for ladies to protect their drinks from being spiked, information leaflets to support the homeless, safe cab cards (Cabwise), a little money to buy a meal for homeless people we meet, water, referral forms for Enfield WPD (Drug and Alcohol Unit), vouchers for Enfield Foodbank and Flip-Flops (very popular with ladies wearing high heels on a night out). We also carry a bible and small note books to write down any relevant information.

As we walk along the streets we look out for bottles and broken glass and other items which could be used as weapons, and we pick these up. We engage in a friendly way with people who want to chat. That is just up my street – one of God’s great gifts to me is chatting! I like chatting to people and bringing smiles to their faces. We chat with door staff outside pubs and nightclubs, pop in for a chat with those working in late night convenience stores, take aways and other shops. We strike up friendships which brings joy to both sides! We chat to groups of girls and ‘lads out on the town’ particularly if there seems to be tension. This is when the sweets (usually lollies) do the trick.

Street Pastors have a calming influence in many volatile situations and have been to communities in shock after fatal stabbings and brought reassurance to the people we meet, and have seen the power of prayer in helping to deal with anti-social behaviour.

Some people just need a pair of listening ears, so we do just that. We listen as they off-load whatever they want to share with us. Listening is a powerful gift for those who have a lot on their minds. There are many lonely people in the streets who just need someone who cares to talk or listen to them.

It is a heart warming sight to see a smile on their face after chatting or listening to them!

We particularly look out for the vulnerable, who could be someone who has had too much to drink, a homeless person who needs a meal, a lone female at a bust stop late at night. We would wait with her until the bus comes. We help vulnerable people to get home safely late at night as well as provide a reassuring presence for people who feel nervous or anxious. Outside night clubs and pubs we talk to people enjoying themselves.

We give the ladies ‘spikeys’ which are bottle corks with small straws, which help to stop their drinks being spiked with drugs when they are not looking.

Churches Together Good Friday Walk of Witness - Friday 30th March at 9.15am Please join our friends from the Methodist and Catholic Churches walk from Christ Church Southgate to St Andrew’s Church Southgate, arriving there at 9.45am for a service which ends by 10.30am after which hot cross buns are served. We will not be walking in the road, but keeping to the pavements. Walking and praying (perhaps using the Jesus Prayer) can be a special way to begin Good Friday. If anyone can help as a steward on the walk, please let me know.

Pre-Lent Quiz Thank you to Fr Chrichton, Judith, Barbara, Angela and all who helped organise our pre-Lent quiz on 10th February which raised £450 for the Diocese Lent Appeal.

We give away many many pairs of Street Pastor Flip-Flops to ladies who need them as an alternative to high-heels which, after a few drinks, have a habit of going ‘on strike’ and start behaving like ‘supermarket trolleys’ !

Our uniforms identify us as Christians so people come to us and talk about our faith.

This is pure gold! Giving us an opportunity to share our faith with them and, if they are happy to do so, pray with them. We have given away Bibles and other leaflets to those who ask for them. Sometimes people come to us out of curiosity, asking who we are, what we are doing and if we are paid. This is a very common question.

We may finish at 2am, sometimes earlier, sometimes a bit later, with prayers thanking God for the people we have met and for keeping us safe. Personally I have no fear when on patrol because I am sure I feel God’s presence with me. At the end of the patrol I feel tired and challenged by what I have seen, but spiritually uplifted and satisfied by what I have accomplished. It is a great privilege for me to serve the Lord as a Street Pastor.

We are looking for more people to join the Enfield Street Pastors and would love to have some pastors from Christ Church Southgate. All volunteers receive training.

(The disciples take the wine) Thaddeus: Yes, we know you are after Elijah in the bible, the tishbite. Here is Elijah’s cup. Now you give eternal life by your blood.

(Jesus returns to find the apostles sleeping) Jesus: Wake up friends, the time is now!

(Enter Judas with soldiers) Judas: (coming up to Jesus and kisses him) Shalom!

Eco Church Eco People Patricia Ashby Deputy Churchwarden Let’s start with postage stamps! I am a regular re-cycler of used postage stamps.

With an increase in alternative ways of communicating and ‘stamping’ our letters, we don’t get so many these days. But we do still get some... and the tendency is to just bin them along with the envelope…

The interesting thing about used stamps is that they still have a further purpose to serve. Their life is not over. As long as they are not damaged, if you cut them from the envelope or packaging with a small border around (say 1 cm), any one of a number of charities will take them and use them to fundraise. I take mine regularly to the front desk of the RNIB in Judd Street, but this is just one of many charities that could be supported.

Against Breast Cancer is one charity whose website you might want to explore.

Others include Macmillan, The Dog’s Trust and the PDSA. If you are happy for your used stamps to help people with sight loss, however, please just bring them to church in an envelope with my name on it – Patricia Ashby – leave it the mail rack or on the pew below, and I will happily collect them and add them to my collection for donation to the RNIB. And watch this space! I’m on a roll…
