It seems likes the run in to the festive season is up to full speed already. This year, Black Friday appeared to stretch to a full weekend or longer – a concept I’m really not convinced we need in this country without Thanksgiving to precede all the spending.

All the shops and web sites are doing their best to persuade us to part with our cash to make sure that Christmas 2017 will be the best yet – whatever that means. I hope all those doing the spending really know why they are being drawn into the headlong rush.

What I do know is that the way that Christmas falls this year really does make everything feel a bit squeezed, as there is a weekend missing! The liturgical calendar has the first Sunday of Advent on the 3rd of

December, which is not a problem until we get to the 4th Sunday of Advent on the 24th – which turns into Christmas Eve at about lunchtime. This has left us trying to fit four events for Sunday evenings into three, which doesn’t actually fit! However, it has all been sorted and we will manage to do everything before the “Big Day”.

What we are doing is offering many different experiences and opportunities to help everyone try and make sense of it all – to be the reminder of the “reason for the season”.

In Advent you can come to Christ Church to sit, listen, think, pray, encounter, share, absorb, reflect, embrace, enjoy and laugh – either on your own or with friends and family – so that the special birthday on the 25th is just that – special.

God With Us Reflections for Christmas and the New Year from The Church of England We’ll be taking a break after our 10am Service on Chrsitmas Day and will be open again for services from 8am on New Year’s Eve. As part of “God With Us” the Church of England has developed a series of thirteen short and simple reflections to help explore the message of so many Christmas readings and carols “Emmanuel” - God is with us.

Available as a printed booklet from Church House Publishing, or as free email bulletins, a reflection has been prepared for each day from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day, as well as one each for the four weeks of Advent. Sign up to receive reflections by email by visiting www.churchofengland.org

On Sunday 3rd there will be the Advent Procession with Carols at 6.30 pm, where we will fully experience the movement from darkness to light, with candles, music and readings. This is my second favourite service (after Holy Saturday at Easter) and is the perfect start to the new liturgical year.

On Sunday 10th we have the Christingle Service at 4 pm in aid of the Children’s Society. The candles in the decorated oranges will be lit and enjoyed to celebrate the light of Christ coming into the world. The giant Christingle selfie station will be back by popular demand, so come ready to take a photograph to make a unique and personal Christmas greeting!

Sunday 17th sees the welcome return of Pam Rhodes to Christ Church at 4 pm to lead us in singing many of the best known carols and tell us some of the stories behind them. It will be a really special event, so bring your friends and neighbours, as we are very lucky that Pam is able to come at such a busy time. However, don’t forget our Pop-Up Nativity Play during the 10 am Eucharist that morning – which promises to be both cute and chaotic.

Our fourth special event is the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols which will be starting off the Christmas weekend on Friday 22nd at 7.30 pm. Please come as a great start to a wonderful weekend.

Christmas Eve will have the familiar story told in words and music for all the family as we build the crib scene under the altar at 5 pm, before we are back for the Midnight Mass at 11.30 pm.

Even though if feels like we are contributing to the whole frenzied rush – particularly with the missing weekend – please come and join us and make sure you take some time to simply adore the baby Jesus, like the shepherds and the wise men did.

May I take this opportunity to wish you and all those you love a peaceful and joyous Christmas filled with the love and goodwill that comes from the Christ Child.

What we do in church and why...

Advent & Christmas Customs Probably the most noticeable thing we do in Advent is lighting the candles on the Advent Wreath. It will stand near the pulpit from Advent Sunday until Christmas Day and a candle on it will be lit on each of the four Sundays in Advent.

In some churches the candles will be surrounded by a circle of evergreens. The most important bit is a circle of four candles surrounding one in the middle. The candles making the circle are three purple and one pink (or rose coloured) ; the central one is white. The outer candles represent the Sundays in Advent, purple being the colour of the season, Advent being a season of penitence. The rose coloured candle will be lit on the third Sunday in Advent, pink being regarded as a lighter version of purple and symbolising our joy that we are halfway through Advent and Christmas is now quite near.

The central white candle will be lit at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and symbolises the light of Christ at his birth. The bringing indoors of evergreens predates Christianity in this country and owes its origins to Germany and the Scandinavian counties where evergreens in the house and the lighting of candles in the darkest days of winter symbolised the people’s hope that light and life would return after the dark.

This year, as we have done in previous years, a travelling crib of Mary Joseph and the donkey will move from house to house during Advent spending a night in each house ending up in church for the Crib Service on Christmas Eve. A simple ceremony of prayers happens when the crib in handed over.

During Advent a Christingle service will be happening, during which we will all be given an orange representing the world, surrounded by a red ribbon for the blood of Christ decorated by cocktail sticks holding sweets as the fruits of the earth. Inserted into the orange will be a lit candle which symbolises the Light of Christ. I believe this custom came from Germany.

Christingle Service - Sunday 10th December at 4.00pm with a collection in aid of The Children’s Society In some churches you can find a ‘Jesse tree’ used during Advent. These trees show the ancestors of Jesus and are so called because Jesse was the father of King David and from him Jesus owes his human ancestry. Often these trees will show Jesus’ descent from Adam. They can be found in stained glass windows in medieval churches especially in France. When used nowadays they take the form of an artificial tree or living branch on which is hung symbols of the patriarchs.

About a week before Christmas, the Christmas tree will be brought into church and decorated with lights. This derives, as the greenery in the Advent Wreath from preChristian usage in Germany and Scandinavia of bringing evergreens indoors. Most people know that Christmas trees were introduced into this country by Prince Albert the husband of Queen Victoria in the nineteenth century.

Also a few days before Christmas we will set up our Christmas Crib. These were introduced in the C13 by St. Francis of Assisi. He visited Bethlehem in 1220 and was able to see where Jesus had been born.

He realised that his fellow citizens of Assisi could never do this and as most of them were illiterate they could not read the gospel account of his birth. He constructed a little Bethlehem in a cave in Assisi; carving out a manger in stone, and making a Baby Jesus also out of stone. He populated the cave with real people and animals representing what had really happened when Jesus was born. St Francis told the people who gathered round the story and the people then understood for themselves. The idea gradually caught on and now a Christmas Crib is a universal part of our celebrations. It is usual to leave the manger empty until the Christmas Eve Crib service when the figure of the Baby Jesus is placed in it.

Join the Junior Choir at our Crib Service at 5.00pm on Sunday 24th December At Christ Church we put the figures of the Magi on one of the window sills and gradually move them towards the crib to be placed there at Epiphany. This feast occurs 12 days after Christmas day and on it we commemorate the coming of the Magi to visit Jesus. Traditionally on this day, the Christmas tree and other greenery are removed. In Christ Church as in many other churches we keep the ‘long Christmas’ when we celebrate the season of Christmas until Candlemas (The presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple) on February 2nd.

The colour of the vestments and hangings in Advent are purple and are changed to white on Christmas Eve for the Christmas season.

After Candlemas, green is used for Ordinary time.

From the “Top Step” Parish Bar

At our recent AGM, Fr. Chrichton said that many of his fellow clergy, when told that Christ Church has a bar, react with a combination of surprise and envy. The bar – which is located upstairs in the Reception Room of Church House - is run by the Christchurch Association (CCA) to provide a “community centre” for our parishioners. But that is only part of the story, as the CCA also exists “to provide social and recreational facilities, promote Christian interest and r raise funds for the church and local charities”.

The words in quotes summarise the objectives of the Association, and indeed the vision of our former vicar Brian Mountford when he founded the CCA in 1979. Over the intervening years we have donated many thousands of pounds to the church, its supported causes and local charities, and most recently to the Organ Appeal Fund, the Winter Shelter, the Diocesan Lent Fund and the Hatters Explorer Scout Unit. This money comes from funds that have accrued from the regular running of the bar, the support of church functions and from our own events such as the highly successful Jazz Evening in February 2017.

The bar stocks a wide range of soft and alcoholic drinks, and is regularly open on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, with the recently refurbished Reception Room providing a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Complimentary cheese and snacks are provided on the first Friday of every month (except August), and our Top Step Talks – where a guest speaker entertains the audience on a Sunday evening – are proving to be very popular.

Special occasions run throughout the year, and these may mark a particular occasion such as Burns’ Night, celebrate a national day (e.g. St. George, St. Patrick, Bastille) and/or offer food from one of the many local takeaway restaurants.

BBQ for the Olympic Torch procession Our busiest day of the year is the May Day Fair, where the CCA provides the outside Pimm’s and Beer tent as well as running the regular bar, and we support a number of church functions including the Talkies Movie, parish lunches and the Advent and Christmas carol services.

The CCA is a Registered Club under the terms of the Licensing Act, and as such those who wish to enjoy our facilities must enrol as members, but the good news is that this costs only £2 per year. Membership is open to anyone who worships at Christ Church, lives in the parish or is associated with an organisation that uses the church halls. We are always looking to attract new members, so if you are interested please talk to a committee member or just turn up at the Reception Room during our normal hours:

Christmas Grotto December 9th The Hatters Explorer Scouts are holding a Christmas Grotto and Bazaar to raise funds for their Greenhouse Project in Viacha (Peru). On a dull, dismal morning in mid November, a group of Young Fogeys and Fr Chrichton and Judith set off from The Green by coach (a 24-seater has been requested, a 42-seater turned up!) to travel to Owlsmoor near Sandhurst for a day with the Revd Jane Kraft; this was to celebrate the Young Fogeys’ 30th birthday.

We give thanks for the gift of your word, the grace of the sacraments and the fellowship of your people.

The Holy Spirit

We arrived at 11am to find a very warm welcome, tea, coffee and biscuits ready for us. It was a very happy day, the Revd Jane had prepared a delicious hot meal for lunch after which she presided over a Eucharist service assisted by Fr Chrichton; it was a moving occasion made special for the Young Fogeys. We thought that was the climax of the day but there was more to follow.

The Revd Jane came in bearing a birthday cake with candles and Fr Chrichton followed with flutes and bubbly. We left for home about 4 o’clock having had a very enjoyable day and full of gratitude to the Revd Jane for all her hard work and loving thought that went into making the day so special for the Young Fogeys.

Join us for our Epiphanytide Carol Service on Sunday 21st January at 6.30pm

On Sunday 26th November we celebrated our Patronal Festival, Christ The King; the incense rising up into the ceiling as we sang the Hymn For Christ Church. After the 10am service the ashes of Joan and Doug Ward were interred. Joan was one of the first people I met when I came to Christ Church. I haven’t written a poem since school but between rehearsals for the evening concert, I wrote this - an attempt to describe the Holy Spirit.

Make a difference to Young Carers in Enfield this Christmas by supporting our Gift Tree

Gift Tree for Young Carers in Enfield The Gift Tree will by the pulpit from Sunday 3rd December to Sunday 17th December.

On the tree will hang 50 tags each containing the first name and age of a young carer being supported by the Enfield Young People in Caring Group. It is hoped that fifty people will be willing to take a tag, buy a suitable gift and return it to church on or before Sunday 17th December. There is no recommended spend or type of gift – suitable (age appropriate) gifts or vouchers are most welcome.

The Enfield Young People in Caring Group, part of the Enfield Carers Centre, supports 5-18 year olds in all aspects of their caring role, from helping them with homework to taking them to outings, meeting them in school, teaching them about the illness of

“We are hugely grateful to the congregation of Christ Church in Southgate for their kindness and generosity. We have over 400 Young Carers on our books, many of whom are dealing with Mental Health, long term illness, disability or Substance Misuse in their family.

To receive a gift will mean the world to them and make their Christmas a little more special.”

Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child This year we sent 67 shoeboxes Christmas presents to Operation Christmas Child, with £335 to cover delivery costs. These go to children overseas, who probably will not receive another gift.

Prayer Tree Through December we will have a Prayer Tree in church. Visitors can write on a Star or Bell decoration something they would like to say thank you for or something or someone they would like to pray for. ‘Pray for Peace’.

How you can help....

Our Christmas Market Stalls are also in church until 17th December. We are raising funds for the Winter Shelter. The Christmas Hamper Raffle this year is in aid of Child Bereavement UK. Tickets are £2 available in church & the draw will be in Church House following the Nine Lessons & Carols.

As usual we are about to wrap the presents for Southgate Homebound. This group meets in Walker Hall six times a year & as the name suggests these people only get out when they are taken. The volunteers who run this charity lay on transport, refreshments and entertainment. The presents will be given out at their Christmas dinner. Please contact the parish office if you know someone who would like to be included.

Charity Lunch 27th January 2018 At the Charities Lunch in November we raised £200 for the North London Samaritans. The next lunch is on Saturday 27th January, in Church House at noon.

We hope to raise £260 for the Loo Block Twinning Project. Our lunches are good occasions, everyone is very welcome.

We have continued to support the local food bank this year. As the winter closes in please think of those less fortunate than ourselves & add something for the box, by the church door, to your shopping. Someone will be very grateful. Finally thank you for YOUR support over the last year. Any contribution that you can make next year will be very gratefully received. Unwanted presents, saleable items, wool, empty jam jars, craft items, etc.

This year St Andrew’s Church are hosting the Southgate shelter on Wednesday evenings from 3 January to 20 March 2018.

Guests to the shelter are referred via APAP and sign an agreement to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety. Only guests with low support needs are referred to the project.

Volunteers are crucial to making the Shelter work. We operate three shifts: evening (7.00pm to 10.00pm), night (9.45pm to 7.00am), morning (7.00am to 8.30am).

Tasks include welcoming guests and providing a friendly environment; setting up and clearing away the beds, tables and chairs; serving food. Volunteers prepare and cook evening meals and breakfasts, they also ensure clean bedding and towels are available.

In last month’s Spire I introduced a new way of giving, the Parish Giving Scheme - and this was the subject of one Fr Chrichton’s sermons in November. At that service a number of parishioners took away the application forms to change their giving to the new scheme. I am pleased to say that some applications have already been received and their donations will be switched to the new scheme forthwith.

Christ Church benefits from having a more predictable and stable income, an efficient and quicker reclaim of Gift Aid and thereby a better cash flow, a protection against inflation by donors choosing to increase their giving annually in line with inflation, reduced administration and paperwork for both the Treasurer and Stewardship Recorder.

The Parish Giving Scheme is now our preferred method of giving and I hope that many more people will decide to switch over from their present way of giving. There are applications form in the rack at the back of church.

Cyprus with St Barnabas & St Paul Twenty four gathered at Terminal Five en route to Larnaca. Revd Jane Kraft, calm and confident in the lead, the reassuring figure of Revd Tristan Chapman bringing up the rear.

There were contingents from Sandhurst , where Revd Jane is based and Barnet with Revd Tristan .

The theme was the connection of the island of Cyprus with the two great figures of the early church, St Paul and St Barnabas. St Barnabas who was himself a Cypriot died or was martyred in Cyprus. St. Paul who worked with him used it as a stopping off point on his journeys from Israel to the wider Middle East.

Settling into the slightly too small minibus we met our affable and knowledgeable Muslim tour guide. Reciting the prayer on our name badges we set off through a brown dry landscape towards the high pass leading to Turkish Northern Cyprus and Girne once Kyrenia. The border in Nicosia, still being overseen and negotiated over by the UN, was an example of EU and non EU cooperation, there was a minimum of delay.

Dr Angela Parker Pilgrim The prayer came in handy. The base for our eight days changed en route, the city hotel was being transformed into a casino. We had to have little villas on the side of a steep hill halfway to the monastery of Bellapaix.

With indoor and outdoor pools, an outdoor terrace, a bar, restaurant and splendid view only a few of us were sad about the switch.

The hotel cats welcomed us to their territory . It transpired there were dozens and dozens, cats and kittens everywhere exuding cuteness but clearly overcrowded.

It happened that one of our group was an international expert on the control of feral cat populations . She swung into action arranging for the hotel to get help to stabilise the population. We felt we were giving as well as receiving.

Eucharist on the terrace

Morning and evening prayer in the warm fresh air of the terrace was wonderful as was the daily Eucharist using Revd Jane’s wood and gold chalice and patten set . Every day we also had an address about our Saints, their travails and differences of opinion. The days were spent seeing the sights. Imagining Paul’s shipwreck off Cyprus was so much more vivid when we saw the two thousand year old wreck displayed in Kyrenia Castle with cargo intact and four sets of cutlery presumably meaning a four man crew.

The North Londoners amongst us pondered the horrible events which affected families on both sides during the troubles of the last fifty years . That partition which gifted us so many neighbours friends and colleagues back home, both Greek and Turkish speaking, still having an effect, changed names and empty houses testament to the destruction of communities.

We went up to the stunning Bellapaix monastery in the village where Lawrence Durrell wrote Bitter Lemons looking down to the beautiful coast, and out towards Turkey across the bay. Our tour guide stood guard as we had a short service in the medieval monastery church amongst Orthodox trappings with wall paintings and icons. We had that spine tingling feeling found in old holy places as echoes took up music from the hymns.

History knowledge was severely challenged as the timelines for the Roman Empire, Lusingian kings and the Crusades were spelt out by the guide. We saw where Richard the Lionheart sat out in the castle of St Hilarion with his beautiful Berengaria.

We admired the view from their balcony. We were welcomed into the familiar shapes of medieval gothic cathedrals re designated as mosques. We learnt about the crusades and how the politics of religion, trade, architecture and the structure of society is still affected by those events.

We went to the beach where Paul might have embarked for Corinth. We remembered his advice about sea travel when our boat trip was cancelled due to bad conditions even though the weather looked fine. We did not protest, we swam inshore in bath warm sea instead.

We sang a hymn underground at the Tomb of St Barnabas, and revelled in its associated museum where there is a stunning collection of Bronze Age pottery. We went to Salamis where Paul and Barnabas preached in the synagogue , and where the remains of the Roman city are so well preserved it would take very little to restore it to a viable modern town. We went to a beach beside the weird abandoned tourist district of Varosha, a part of Famagusta out of bounds to the public , isolated since 1974 when 40,000 people were evacuated during the Turkish

occupation . Hotels and apartments owned by oligarchs mothballed and empty were a spooky sight.

A wonderful welcome from Revd Wendy Hough, priest of St Andrews, gave us a home from home on Sunday with its comfortable liturgy and hospitable congregation. This is the English Church in Kyrenia. It is part of the Diocese of Cyprus and The Gulf, established in 1913. A packed morning service with a baptism meant lots of us had to follow the service on the big screen in the cheerful canteen downstairs, thus able to be first in the coffee queue. A number of the congregation then took us over the road to The George, a handily situated city centre pub, for a chat and a drink after the service.

The pilgrimage had quiet times and reflective times and jolly times with wonderful food, great hospitality and for me some real insights into the early church. Paul was only three cubits high, small and bald and quarrelled so badly with Barnabas they agreed to part company and each set off to encourage different bits of the emerging organisation. This may have been key to the success of the movement.

We saw the views they saw, we walked where they might have walked, we ate things they might have enjoyed from the local seas and farms. We smelt the vegetation, we heard the insects, we saw the stars. We enjoyed the company of others of like mind who brought a potpourri of knowledge to the dining tables and enriched the shared experience.

This pilgrimage was an inspiring journey melding the familiar with the unknown, reexamining and recasting belief in the light of evidence, rejoicing in joy of companionship using the excitement of safe travel in good company to rejuvenate the spirits.

Thank you Jane and Tristan for the ministry of pilgrimage. You made it possible for everyone to participate in everything, paced it so no one felt too slow to join in or keep up and were both there to ready to listen and support whenever something surfaced which needed sorting or shriving.

God of compassion, your love for humanity was revealed in Jesus, whose earthly life began in the poverty of a stable and ended in the pain and isolation of the cross: we hold before you those who are homeless and cold especially in this bitter weather. Draw near and comfort them in spirit and bless those who work to provide them with shelter, food and friendship.

You will bring forth a baby son. He will be great in the world and will save his people. That is why he shall be called JESUS, which means to save, because he will save his people from their sins!

Mary: I cannot believe this! Joseph has not touched me. I am a pure virgin.

Mary: Dear Elizabeth – help me in this hour of need!

Zacharius: enters joyfully Shalom Mary, how wonderful to see you here!

Mary: Blessed be God’s name. Shalom Zacharius. My father Joachim and my beloved mother St Anne send you their love.

Elizabeth: We’ll have a lovely time here Mary. Thank you for coming. I have only three months before my darling baby is to be born!

ACT 2 : SCENE 2 St Anne: Welcome back darling Mary! How are you? How are cousins Elizabeth and Zacharius?

Mary: Very well, mother!

Enter St Anne’s husband, Joachim Joachim: Lovely, you are Mary! We know you are still a pure virgin! It is God’s baby – God himself as promised in Isaiah.

Mary: My beloved parents. How I adore you.

I shall be worthy of my Lord, I carry his cross.

Amen.

Summary of November’s PCC Meeting

The PCC had its bi-monthly meeting on 21st November, the salient areas of discussion being: • The draft budget for 2018 indicates a cash flow shortfall of just over £12,000, a similar level to the expected result for 2017. That is largely due to the planned loss of rental income from one of the flats.

• That loss might be alleviated somewhat by as many of those who kindly donate by standing order each month transferring their kind donation to the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS). Forms are at the back of Church and all donors are encouraged to transfer their mode of payment.

• The Vicar will commence his Intercessions training programme some time in the New Year.

• A composting area has been identified

by Pat Hawkins in the cemetery beyond the Weld Chapel; please speak to Pat if you can give any time at all to assisting her with gardening.

• The 2018 Remembrance Service will be of especial significance and scale, marking as it will 100 years since the cessation of hostilities.

• Chalice Bearers are to be licensed by the Bishop • Our curate Liz Brown has completed a basic sign-language course. The PCC agreed to fund further training.

Mary: He was one of Israel’s wisest kings.

He did not ask for wealth but wisdom to rule and thus God granted him riches and as well as wisdom.

Mary: Oh thank God we have arrived in Bethlehem dear Joseph; helped to reach here by our dear donkey. Thanks be to God! Narrator: Mary and Joseph arrive in Bethlehem and search in vain for a place to rest, and Mary to have her baby.

Simon Pothen lost his nine month battle with cancer on 13th November.

He would have been fifty seven on the 15th.

Simon was a curate at Christ Church from 1988 - 1991. He had a great speaking & singing voice, his laughter was infectious. He had a presence & reverence in church but also a great sense of fun.

Simon will be very sadly missed by his family, numerous friends & colleagues.

His funeral will be a Requiem held in Chelmsford Cathedral, where he was Precentor, on Thursday 7th December at 11 am.

Shepherds: We have seen the star and come to worship the new born king!

Mary: I have wrapped him in swaddling cloths to keep his body firm! How beautiful he is – son of God, child of Mary. God himself, come down.

Phillip Dawson Churchwarden & Editor When Fr Chrichton came to Christ Church he explained what a wonderful impression he had of all of us from our “digital church” on our website, Twitter and Facebook. A year ago he asked if I would become Editor of The Spire and re-launch it - making it just as vibrant and colourful as our Twitter feed and Facebook page, reduce the amount of ‘paid for’ content, with more contributions from parishioners. His brief for the look and feel of the magazine was “more Hello Magazine, less academic journal.”

I hope you have enjoyed what we have done.

It had been some time since The Spire last had a makeover. I know some people felt sad about not having a picture of the church spire on the front cover - but there has been a photo of it in at least three issues so far!

We’ve tried to feature more contributions from our community, from our local school and other organisations. As well as being a record of what has happened in the past, we’ve tried to include suggestions on ways you can help build a better future, as Ambassadors for Christ. Thank you so much to everyone who has written articles over the past year. Please do send more poems, prayers, drawings, photographs, book reviews and reflections.

At the start of the year we decided to produce The Spire in full colour even though we knew the price would not cover the extra printing costs. We felt our parish deserved to be seen in technicolour! We are grateful to all our advertisers whose donations subsidise the costs of production. From February 2018 we have decided to increase the cover price.

The first such increase in many years. We hope you will continue to think The Spire is good value.

From February the cover price will be £1 for copy (£1.50 for July/Aug and Dec/Jan double issues) i.e. £11 per year collect from church. The charge for postal subscriptions will increase to £22 to cover the cost of postage and packing.

Building owners proposing to carry out work covered by the Act must give adjoining owners proper notice of their intentions in the way set down in the Act. Adjoining owners can agree or disagree with what is proposed. Where they disagree, the Act provides a mechanism for resolving disputes by appointed surveyors.

The requirements of the Act are separate from the need to obtain planning permission, building regulations approval and with leaseholders — often a licence to alter.
