June is looking like a very busy month at Christ Church.

We will be celebrating Choral Singing, Precision Flying, Artistic Skill, as well as many other events which are contained in these pages.

May was full as well, including the Peak Pilgrimage, where an enthusiastic group, led by Ronald Lo tackled 40 miles of the varied terrain of the Peak District, with some stunning views and prayer, reflection and companionship along the way – mostly wet and slippery unfortunately.

However, as I write this letter, we are still reeling from the news of the terrorist bomb in Manchester that killed 22 young adults and children.

As I said from the pulpit on the Sunday after Ascension, there are times when as a Vicar you are faced with having to find the right words to provide some sort of comfort, or to offer a theological explanation to something that you just don’t understand. The danger is that the best you can really think of are bland and meaningless phrases, that will not really add anything to anyone. I think the week at the end of May, which had the Manchester bombing and the murder of dozens of Coptic Christians on the way to church in Egypt, was one of those times. The senseless murder of so many young adults and children in either incident cannot be justified or understood. All it shows is that the human race is very capable of extreme cruelty and horror in our so-called civilised times.

On the Tuesday evening after the bombing a few of us gathered for the Eucharist, and I will be honest and say that when it came to the Intercessions I really didn’t know what to pray for. So I suggested that we stay silent and offer up to God all the pain and suffering in the hope that his love would flow and somehow make it better.

Rev’d Dr Sam Wells God of mercy and judgement, in Christ you came among us as a vulnerable child and suffered a cruel and untimely death.

In the face of terror you show us what we rightly love.

Visit the people of Manchester today, in the midst of horror, and grief, and injury, and dismay.

Comfort the maimed and the bereaved.

Strengthen the hands of those who bring healing, hope and kindness in the face of agony and brutality.

Teach each one of us to hold dear what can so suddenly be snatched away, to cherish what can so intimately be threatened, and to uphold what some are seeking to destroy.

Make this time of terror and loss a moment of renewal in what we most deeply believe and firmly maintain, that though we fear we may more truly love, and though we despair we more profoundly know you, whose kingdom we seek now and forever.

Amen.

I ended with a special prayer for Manchester written that morning by Rev’d Dr Sam Wells the Vicar of St Martin’s in the Fields. I’m sure I could have prayed for the victims, the injured, the bereaved, those who were searching for loved ones and the rescue services, but I suspect that would have been a way of trying to cope by doing “something”.

But that Tuesday evening was an example of the fundamental question that we struggle with as Christians. If God didn’t stop the young man setting off the bomb, why would our prayers prompt God to leap in and quickly pick up the pieces and clear up after the event. I’m not going to give you a bland or instant answer - that is a question we all have to grapple with in our own hearts.

The following day, the Election Hustings were replaced by an hour of music, reading and prayers to allow people to pray and reflect – again not a time for words of explanations.

A book of condolence for the people of Manchester was opened and remained in church until the Sunday, before I sent it to the Bishop of Manchester at the end of the week, to at least let them know we are praying for them. And that is all we can do at times like that – pray – a lot – even if we don’t really know what we are praying for, or if it will do any good. We just need to sit in silence and in pain and wait and just try and share some of the suffering with God. In this edition of Spire, we are sharing different individual’s favourite prayers. I think the timing of this feature could not have been better, as the tragedy in Manchester serves to remind us with a jolt that prayer is hard. However, we must keep doing it and we need to do it, even without really understanding what we are doing or seeing any direct results. It is no coincidence that faith is described as a wonderful gift in a sea of doubt. As another contribution to the list of prayers in the magazine, here is a prayer for Manchester by Sam Wells.

Pledge to Pray Between Ascension and Pentecost, the Archbishop of Canterbury invited Christians around the world to Pledge to Pray for people to know Jesus Christ.

As we reach the end of this special week of prayer we asked people to share with us a prayer that carries special meaning to them.

Between 25th May and 4th June (Asecension and Pentecost) churches around the globe are praying together for God’s difference to be known, for God’s healing and presence in our society, drawing on one line from the Lord’s Prayer, “thy Kingdom come”.

Some people will think “oh, more sky fairy stuff”, but around the world, in places of peace or trouble, in suffering and security, in wealth and poverty, Christians will be praying this as they seek to live God’s purpose for them.

In the wake of so much sorrow - the tragic attack in Manchester, the Coptic Christians killed as they travelled to pray - it would be easy, or perhaps even natural, to despair.

But as Christians we believe we are called to hope.

Praying Thy Kingdom Come is a statement of hope, a declaration of our belief in the difference that only God can make.

It’s not open to most of us to make decisions that heal the nations, or even our local communities. But it is open to all of us to live lives and pray prayers that bring purpose and hope.”

Fr Stuart Owen Area Dean There are lots of prayers which I find particular strength and hope in, but I suppose my most ‘faithful companion’ in terms of prayer is the Hail Mary.

When I’m sitting by someone’s hospital bedside, making my way to a difficult pastoral encounter, seeking a moment’s stillness in the busy-ness of London, and in countless other situations, I turn to the Rosary or simply that prayer; I find there courage, tenderness and peace.

I used this prayer at my welcome services in 2015, when I became the Bishop. It remains my prayer, that we may begin to trust each other in the life of the Edmonton Area, because in so doing, we see something of Jesus Christ in each other. In addition, I pray daily that we are saved from being dull. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is many things, but it certainly is not dull.

‘Our only Father, humble us Mary-like before the cross of your Son, our Lord, Jesus of Nazareth, so that through the Spirit we may be joined in the one body, the Church, thus becoming your mighty prayer for the world. Gracious God, whose grace terrorizes and sustains us, we pray for courage. Invade our lives, robbing us of fear and envy so we might begin to trust one another and in the process discover a bit of the truth. In this serious business grant us the joy and humour that comes from your presence.

Cathy Dallman - Lay Reader Here is a prayer by John Donne which I have liked for a long time. We have no idea, of course, what awaits us but I think this prayer comes near to what perhaps might be our experience: Bring us O Lord, at our last awakening into the house and gate of heaven, to enter into that gate and dwell in that house where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings but one equal eternity in the habitations of your glory and dominion, world without end.

Sue Grey, a member of our Friday Study Group reviews ‘Being Disciples’ by Rowan Williams

A Single Gaze of Love I first read ‘Being Disciples’ last September in preparation for joining Jackie’s study group, as the book had been selected for our reading, discussion and reflection during the autumn term. At Christ Church Southgate we have two evening study groups, led by our Lay Readers; Cathy’s group meets on Wednesdays and Jackie’s on Fridays: both meet fortnightly in the homes of group members.

‘Being Disciples’ deals with essential Christianity, but at a less observable and deeper level than in the prequel ‘Being Christian’.

The book consists of six chapters, based on Dr Williams’ addresses given between 2007 and 2012, each beginning with a short Biblical passage.

Chapter 1- Being disciples The opening chapter explores two interrelated ideas. First, discipleship is a permanent state of being where we abide in Christ and he in us (John 15:4) in an ongoing close relationship and therefore it is not possible to be an ‘intermittent’ disciple.

Secondly, this abiding enables us to absorb a way of being which we can start to share with others.

We have to be aware of what God might be trying to teach us and have an expectancy that he will communicate something of importance to us. This awareness and expectancy requires us to have a degree of inner stillness in which our minds are relaxed yet attentive.

Chapter 2 - Faith hope and love Faith, Hope and Love are three indispensable qualities in the life of the

Christian disciple. Rowan Williams draws inspiration from the sixteenth century Spanish friar, St John of the Cross, who saw a relationship between understanding and faith, remembering and hope, and wanting and love.

to show the relationship between praying for our essential needs and needing to forgive others and be forgiven.

The author observes that in the Western world believers have lost a great deal of doctrinal certainty which has undermined the confidence in our ability to share the Gospel.

John of the Cross says that it is out of this sense of confusion that faith grows in the form of a dependable relationship, in which we learn to be confident in the presence of God, who does not change or let us go.

Dr Williams’ view is that we have a crisis of identity because we have difficulty in remembering all the events of our life and drawing them together into a cohesive whole that can reassure us as to who we really are. God is the only reliable witness to the whole of our lives as he knows us better than anyone else knows us and better than we know ourselves. The author summarises his thoughts in what I think is the most beautiful sentence of the book: “What you don’t understand or see, the bits of yourself you can’t pull together in a convincing story, are all held in a single gaze of love.”

Rowan Williams reflects on the consumer society in which we have the freedom to buy a wide range of products, aimed at satisfying our immediate wants, but which provide only superficial and transient happiness.

We have forgotten that the most important freedom is the freedom to be ourselves and the freedom to grow into the person God wants us to be.

Chapter 3 - Forgiveness The author uses the petitions in the Lord’s Prayer: “Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

‘Bread’ is used not only as a term for our material needs, but also to include the need to be nourished by God to feed our very humanity. Dr Williams speaks about the dignity of all human beings made in the image of God and suggests that one important way we can feed and nurture each other’s dignity is by forgiving the wrong done to us. Forgiveness is a healing process for both parties, but not a safe process, as it will involve stepping outside of our comfort zone and risking further hurt. God is love and it is love that is shown by God when forgiving us and by us when we forgive each other. The closer we follow Christ the more it becomes our nature to forgive.

Chapter 4 – Holiness Rowan Williams contrasts ‘saints’ against so-called ‘saintly’ people, in the sense that the latter usually make you feel worse about yourself whilst the former have a positive effect on those they encounter. Such people are at home in their own skins and have learned to sense some of the joy that God takes in them, which suggests to others that through God’s grace they too could love and delight in themselves. Saints are not obsessively interested in themselves; they enable you to see God and they radiate his love and joy. The author sums up by saying that if you want to be holy stop thinking about it; instead enjoy God’s world and enter into it as much as you can in love and service.

Chapter 5 - Faith in Society Dr Williams identifies two problems with an increasing secular society. The first is that the market does not provide for an equitable distribution of resources. The second is how do people find the motivation to act altruistically?

The author suggests two principles of Christian discipleship that should form part of an alternative basis for society, firstly that we are each of equal value to God and secondly we are all dependent on each other. The church should seek to influence government and individuals of this alternative and better moral basis for ordering public life.

Chapter 6 - Life in the Spirit In the opening section of this chapter Rowan Williams draws attention to the fruits of the Spirit as identified by St Paul (Galatians 5:2223) and says that this is the kind of humanity Christian disciples should be living out. He cites four things as being necessary if we are to be fruitful: Self-knowledge, Stillness, Growth and Joy. He is not suggesting that these are marks of spiritual maturity but rather “a trail you might like to follow as you develop in your life of discipleship.”

We should make the time to create some space around our intense feelings, so that we can analyse them and become more selfaware. Creating this space requires stillness of the body as well as of mind and heart. We are expected to grow in the life of the Spirit so must be prepared to be stretched and challenged. Joy does not refer to a transient feeling of happiness, but is described by the author as an “overflow, superabundance.”

Conclusion The most amazing quality of ‘Being Disciples’ is that such a massive amount is packed into only eighty-six pages. I definitely recommend the book although suggest that its full value will only be realised if it is read and re-read slowly and thoughtfully. It is a beautifully written book and most inspiring in offering fresh perspectives on the journey of discipleship.

My Prayer Life The prayers are more than a daily ritual. I hope so anyway.

Prayer is our great link with Jesus – our beloved Saviour and God. I do lengthy prayers every other day – for the church people who are not well, clergy, friends, family, animals in the environment. As well for the world, the developing countries, peace and an end to global poverty.

There are others I pray for, too.

On the other day I do shorter intercessions.

My prayer is because of my love for Jesus and all his family, including the natural world.

Thank you Jesus for this time with you.

I love this quiet time with the Lord. After my prayer time, I study my Christian books, I love this introduction and peace that it brings. Sometime this is all quite lovely in the morning with a cup of tea.

Although it is now June, I would like to refer to Easter and Passover. Easter of course is Jesus’s triumph over death on the cross.

Freedom for us. As well it is linked with the Jewish Passover, the going out of Egypt by the Jewish people, thousands of years before Jesus Christ. This was God’s act of triumph too – delivering His people from

Inter-Church Rounders On Sunday 14th May we joined with three other churches in Barnet and Enfield for an inter-church rounders match, raising hundreds of pounds for Christian Aid. Initiated in 2016 by Fr Edd Turner, Vicar of St Andrew’s Southgate and The Reverend Dr Gregory Platten, Vicar of All Saints Whetstone, this year the tournament included

teams from Christ Church Southgate and St Mary The Virgin East Barnet.

The tournament in Oak Hill Park attracted hundreds of revellers from all four churches, cheering on their teams whilst enjoying a bring-and-share picnic in the glorious sunshine. A team from St Andrew’s Southgate ran a refreshments stall with

slavery – to an ultimate life in the promised land – forty years later.

Now it is summer – June – the sun is out for a few months. The beautiful roses bloom: these give delight by their scent and appearance. How wonderful!

Anyway, Christ Church readers of the Spire; I hope you will all have a lovely summer – and enjoy the lovely Christ Church services – as I like to do.

Our Peak Pilgrims complete a six-day trek raising nearly £2,000 for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice

At Their Peak!

Despite the “wet bums, aches and pains”, a group of 15 pilgrims aged from fifty something to eighty something returned “exhilarated” on Sunday 21st May following a 40 mile, six day pilgrimage through Derbyshire from Illam to Eyam, raising nearly £2,000 for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice.

Described as “challenging” and “inspiring” the route took the pilgrims across the dramatic landscape of the Peak District; the terrain, particularly the steep slope down into Dove Dale, made more challenging due to the wet weather which beset the pilgrims all week. The route has been designed to commemorate the supreme sacrifice made by villagers in Eyam in 1665 when the plague was contracted after a local tailor brought back a contaminated piece of cloth from London.

Led by the parish priest, the villagers chose to isolate themselves to prevent others from contracting the disease. One third of the villagers died but their sacrifice saved hundreds of others in the Dales and beyond. Throughout the week, the pilgrims remembered this sacrifice in prayer and participated in an Open Air Communion Service In the hills above Chatsworth House.

The pilgrimage raised funds for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice who provide support for children and young people with lifelimiting or life-threatening conditions and their families in North London. Thank you for all your donations, including gift aid and matched funding the pilgrims hope to have raised close to £2,000. Thank you to Ronald Lo and Jackie Anderson for organising the pilgrimage and to all who joined the trek!

Southgate Civic Week One Body One Faith Help us to build our Corpus Christi collage Between 12th and 18th June the eyes of the Twitter world will be on our church as we take over the Church of England’s “OurCofE” Twitter account for the week! The project aims to showcase the diversity of the Church of England and allow people to see how God is at work in everyday life. Our week includes Corpus Christi (on 15th June). Inspired by the artwork “The People’s Monarch” - a photo collage of a portrait of the Queen, we hope to create a collage using our mosaic reredos as a basis for the image. We hope that people will send in photographs of themselves or loved ones they wish to remember via Twitter or bring them into the church office to be scanned. The collage will be assembled during the week. “Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.”

Celebrating a Southgate Hero Southgate Civic Week - a week of events to celebrate our community, co-ordinated by the Southgate & District Civic Trust - will draw to a close with a special Choral Evensong on Sunday 18th June at 6.30pm, commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Operation Squabble.

10th - 18th June 2017 Above the west door in church hangs a Tricolore – the French Flag. The flag replaces one which was dropped on top of the Arc de Triomphe on 12th June 1942 by the crew of a Beaufighter Aircraft in one of the most daring – but now forgotten – acts of precision flying in WW2.

The pilot of the aircraft was Alfred “Ken” Gatward, a Southgate resident. Intelligence had shown that the Germans paraded down the Champs-Elysees every day between 12.15 and 12.45. Ken and his navigator, George Fern set off in a deliberately ill equipped plane (in case it fell into enemy hands). Flying at times at only 20ft and below high tensioned cables over enemy positions until reaching Paris, they successfully dropped a Tricolore on the Arc de Triomphe as an act of solidarity with the French people.

Ken and George returned home unharmed and casualties were minimal (the mission had originally intended that Ken’s plane should fire on the German Troops parading up and down the Champs-Elysees but on that day the parade had been called off).

The replica flag which hangs in church was presented to the Southgate and Wood Green Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association by representatives of the French Government at a special ceremony in Broomfield Park on 28th July 1949 and has hung in our church ever since.

Please join us for our special service to remember Ken Gatward and Operation Squabble. A team from the RAF Museum will be here recording the service as part of preparations for the RAF Centenary in 2018 and are especially keen to hear from anyone who remembers the presentation in Broomfield Park in 1949.

William Morris Activity Day For pupils of St Andrew’s CE Primary & Walker Primary Schools To coincide with Southgate Civic Week, we are delighted to welcome artist Lucy Rainbow and the Education team from the William Morris Gallery to Christ Church Southgate on Thursday 15th June to lead a series of workshops with Year 3 and Year 4 classes from two local primary schools. Christ Church Southgate is home to London’s largest collection of stained glass windows by Morris & Company in period of output, with work by Edward Burne Jones, Ford Madox Brown, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Philip Webb and William Morris himself spanning the period 1861 - 1913.

Lucy and her team will be helping the children to create their own works of art inspired by our beautiful collection of stained glass.

Those who sing pray twice Last month Fr Chrichton presented Liz Hill and Clive Woodhouse with special “long service” medals for 29 and 39 years service as members of The Choir of Christ Church Southgate. Ali St Denis was presented with a special certificate thanking her for 15 years of singing. Mabel Geeson was presented with her own hymn book to use from the pews after she retired from the choir after several decades & Ian Winton was thanked for his special contribution. We caught up with Liz and Clive after Evensong to share some of their many memories of the choir.

What was the choir like when you started singing here?

Liz Hill (LH) : I first joined the choir in October 1988 after coming here from Waltham Abbey. It was a mixed choir then led by Chris Dell – most people seemed to be of the same age – around 30 or so. At the time we had two curates; Matthew Baynes and Simon Pothen, sadly both of whom are unwell and we are praying for them in our intercessions. Simon was a gifted preacher and I remember his sermons fondly. I was roped in to the choir by Carol Jarman who suggested I should come along. I met Carol when I did my teaching practice at Goffs School in Hertfordshire, where Peter Branker (a former Choir Master here) also taught.

Clive Woodhouse (CW) : I came to sing at Christ Church in June 1978. At the time it was an all male choir, led by Stephen

Lloyd, an exceptionally gifted man who could at times be rather eccentric! I had been singing for fifteen years at Kendall Parish Church before I came to Southgate.

I arrived in Enfield straight from university without knowing the area at all. I got out an A to Z and went around different churches listening to their choirs that summer. I ended up at a church in Enfield (which will remain nameless!) but their choir was not great. By chance, I met someone socially who sang here at Christ Church and they suggested I come along. I was booked in to sing on the tour to Llandaff Cathedral – as a sort of trial – and I have been kept on ever since!

The choir was slightly smaller in number in those days – around 16 men, many of whom had been to Latymer School – a strong connection which we still maintain.

How has the choir changed since then?

CW: The standard now is undoubtedly the highest it has been in the past 30 years.

LW: Yes, I agree with Clive. It has been interesting to see how each new Director of Music has added something different – some improved and extended the repertoire, the link between the music and the liturgy, improved the social side of the choir and built up the junior choir. Richard has been able to draw all of this together in a wonderful way.

What have you enjoyed the most in your time as part of the choir?

CW: I think our trips away have been particular highlights for me. I remember Llandaff with Stephen Lloyd, then Edinburgh, Exeter and Norwich with John Taylor. We visited Portsmouth Cathedral twice as well as Chester and Lincoln with Chris Dell. We used to go away for a full week, but that’s impractical these days with people’s busy lives. Holy Week and Easter are always very special.

In the past we used to perform a concert on Good Friday, inviting back former members of the choir and roping in some of the congregation too!. Recently our Christ the King Patronal Festival Concerts have been spectacular. The B Minor Mass was very special but perhaps my favourite so far has been Handel’s Messiah, conducted

by Richard Brain – we received a standing ovation and all of the solos were sung by ‘home grown’ talent, drawn from our choir.

LW: Yes the concerts and the trips have all been really wonderful. The trip to St David’s last year was a real highlight. I remember Chester and Worcester fondly.

When you think of the choir what is your strongest memory so far?

LH : The choir has been such an important part of my life. I would have to say that my strongest memory is from 1994 when I met the man who became my husband! Adrian had sung with the choir as a young man and then returned later. Both my sons – Tom and Alex continue to sing in the choir.

CW : One of the funniest things I can remember was one of Damon Maggiulli’s first outings as Thruifer. It was Epiphany Sunday. At the time our practice was to cense the vicar three times and the curates twice. Matthew Baynes, one of the curates at the time, took a beautifully deep bow after the second swing but Damon gave a third swing and hit him right in the middle of his forehead! There was a deafening crash as the top of the thurible went flying! The next week Matthew preached a sermon in a cycle helmet! Most of the choir ended up bent double in silent laughter. Chris Foster, the vicar at the time, just carried on celebrating the Eucharist - we knew then we had another bishop in the making!
