Presented at the Annual Meeting May 4, 2025 | 11:00 am
We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.
2 Thessalonians 1:3
Dear Friends,
My heart swells and I truly see the Spirit moving reading through these Annual Reports and all your names engaged in ministry! In 2024, we worshiped together, welcomed new members, socialized at coffee hour and potluck dinners celebrating our diversity! We’ve come closer to God and one another in small groups, classes, and weekday Morning Prayer. Children and teens fully participated in Sunday morning and parish events, becoming more connected to the diocese and attended the Episcopal Church General Convention! We added a youth handbell choir and our adult choir grew, elevating our liturgy with their love of God and one another.
Last year, we began living into our Parish Strategic Goals for 2024-2026. The goals and updates are included on pages 8-9. Increased attendance and stewardship are the fruits of the Spirit moving in this community that is deeply rooted and branching out!
The three parishioners standing for election to vestry this year all started attending and became active members since the pandemic, a reflection of this parish’s charism of hospitality and a sign of renewal. I am deeply grateful for the leadership of Arnie Peinado and Dara Near as Wardens, and to Chuck Nwachuku, for agreeing to become our next Warden. These long-standing leaders have been involved in almost every parish ministry, raised children at Christ Church, and grown spiritually as Christians with deep faith and optimism!
I give thanks “because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.” In the year ahead, I pray our faith and community will ground us in the love of Christ and grant us compassion, creativity, and courage for 2025.
Blessings,
The Rev. Bowie Snodgrass 12th Rector

The Rev. A Bowie Snodgrass
For the first five weeks of the year, I was on the second part of my Sabbatical, focused on writing and poetry as a spiritual discipline. I organized my home office, collected poetry I’ve written since high school, went on a writing retreat, and read a lot. My primary projects were setting up a Substack website and newsletter, and turning my master’s thesis, a collection of poems, into a manuscript. I published my first Substack post in early February and in the year following, published 30+ original poems and grew to 100+ subscribers (bowiesnodgrass.substack. com). Over the course of last year, I revised and edited my thesis poems and am in the process of assembling a book proposal to send to publishers. It was a tremendous gift to have this extended time to reestablish my writing practice, which I have been able to continue. I am grateful to the Rev. Canon Robert Griner, who filled in for me during this period.
Rev. Paul has continued to flourish and brings great faith and passion. In April, we celebrated
Georgeann duChossois’ 15th Anniversary at Christ Church and in December gave thanks for Lydia Zapico’s 12th Anniversary. Jenn McGregor agreed to a new five-year contract as Director of Christ Church Nursery School. I am deeply grateful for our incredible staff for their leadership and dedication, even during a difficult year when Georgeann lost her mother; Paul, his father; Chris, his sister and father-in-law; and my husband, George, had cardiac bypass surgery.
We were grateful for your prayers and support! At the end of 2024, I shared the good news that the Rev. Dr. Tim Mulder would be returning to Christ Church as a Priest Affiliate beginning January 1, 2025.
Sarah Rosen and I set up a new small group called “Create & Connect” on the 1st Friday of each month from 9-10:30 as a time to write or create with encouragement and company! I love leading Bible Study with a growing group who explored the Gospel according to John and the Psalms. I wrote many poems last year inspired by these two books of the Bible. Last winter, I was part of an Afternoon of Tea & Poetry with Janet Maulbeck and Libby Clarke.
Christ Church and I continued to be committed to branching out and connecting to the wider church and Diocese. We welcomed an array of guest preaches to our pulpit, including:
• The Very Rev. Larry Evans Pastor of Saint Rose of Lima
• Janet Maulbeck Executive Director of Interweave
• Tamara Plummer Program Officer, Episcopal Relief & Development
• Anthony Briggs, Executive Director Cross Roads Camp & Retreat Center
• The Rev. Deacon Jill Singleton Founder & Director of the Lighthouse
• Seniors – Angelica Nwachuku, Catherine DeCiantis, River Bredlau
I continue to serve as Chair of the Education Committee for the Diocese of Newark’s Commission on Ministry, which oversees the ordination process for deacons and priests, and on the Planning Team for the Episcopal Parish Network, the new name for the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes, another ministry founded 40 years ago by Christ Church with leadership from Juli Towell. Several of us attended the 40th Anniversary Gala for Apostles’ House, a ministry started by my father, the Rev. T. James Snodgrass, with Christ Church as the first partner, also led by Juli Towell. Cathy Fernandez is on the current Board of Directors.
We are blessed with amazing Lay Leaders on the Vestry, our Committee Chairs, and so many of you. The stories of your ministries are spread out throughout this report in words and pictures. One of my goals coming out of the pandemic recovery period was to say YES to YOUR new ideas and initiatives. This Annual Report tells those stories. It is my great joy to see the growth of your faith and ministries!
The Christ Church Parish Strategic Goals were shaped over the course of 2023, beginning with a Vestry Retreat with consultant Katie Ong in January, work by a vestry sub-committee, a Town Hall meeting in the fall, and adoption by the Vestry at their December meeting. Over the course of 2024, the parish began to live into these goals, a process set to continue through 2026.
We have been intentional about inviting newer members into leadership positions and responding affirmatively to new ideas. Senior Warden, Arnie Peinado, and Parish Administrator, Georgeann duChossois assembled an orientation binder for Vestry Members and Officers with documents on governance and finances.
In June and December, newcomers and new members participated in a New Member Liturgy of Welcome & Belonging at the 10am service and special coffee hour. Rev. Paul has invited additional people to join the Newcomer Committee using an approach called Invite, Welcome, Connect.
Jenn McGregor, Director of Christ Church Nursery School, Rev. Bowie and Chris Whitaker have put together a schedule of events where CCNS families are invited to Christ Church or Rev. Bowie attends CCNS events. Chris has also coordinated with the PACCNS outreach and communications volunteers.
Christ Church has continued to grow and welcome households from diverse backgrounds, including many races, nationalities, sexualities, and socioeconomic backgrounds from more than 20 local towns.
A new Creation Care team met several times this fall and are exploring planting native species on the campus, as well
as creation care initiatives in Newark and around the diocese. Dendy Franco and Sandra Johnson are co-chairing the work on the church grounds.
Multiple planned upgrades to the A/V and sound system in the parish have been installed. We also added a set-up for hybrid video conferences in the St. Mark’s Room.
We continued to deepen relationships with the Diocese and Trinity St. Philip’s Cathedral. In May, Rev. Paul filled in one Sunday at the Cathedral. Rev. Bowie and Rev. Paul attended the funeral of Marguerite Smith, wife of the Rev. George Dredden and Union of Black Episcopalians President.
Members of Christ Church serve on the Board and attended events for the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges, All the Way Up Adult Education Center, and Apostle’s House, which celebrated its 40th Anniversary. All founded with Christ Church in Short Hills.

The Rev. Paul Keene
The Episcopal Church is a discerning church. Its congregations take stock of their identities, of who they are. For most, it’s a process they begin when entering transition. Transition is a time to evaluate itself, to listen to its people, to take stock of its gifts, to see where the Spirit is guiding it. A church doesn’t need to wait to do this sort of work. It could, at any time, reflect and discern where it’s been, where it is now, and where it’s going. This is basically journaling, just for the entire community. Journaling is healthy. Churches should do it more.
That’s something I love about Christ Church. We are a church that journals, that evaluates itself, that listens to its people, that takes stock of its gifts to see where the Spirit is leading us. And, my friends, the Spirit is leading us into great opportunity. Not only is she leading, but we are listening and reacting well to her call. This last year testifies to this incredible reality that we share.
From the vantage point of the chancel and pulpit, I am gifted with regularly seeing your faces each Sunday. I am humbled by and rejoice in the frequency with which I see each of you, the number of you that I see, and how often I am meeting new faces! I am encouraged hearing about the relationships you are building with one another, and the regularity with which you are inviting your friends to join us here. Our youth have been exemplary in showing forth their joy and love for our community. I have to say, it’s contagious! I know that’s a dangerous word, but its honestly good that our joy and love is spreading.
We’ve continued to see our love for learning deepening. Small groups are flourishing here. All of them are growing and we’ve also seen new groups sprouting. We are finding that our capacity to share our faith is expanding and our knowledge of one another is increasing through them. From Morning Prayer and Faith & Film
to Martha & Mary and Create & Connect, Christ Church is booming when it comes to diverse opportunities to come together in prayer, fellowship, learning, and service. If you haven’t yet found your way into one of our many small groups, I encourage you to try one or even a few out. I promise you, you’ll enjoy yourself and find the roots of your faith growing deeper.
As mentioned, there have been some new endeavors. This past year, we began a confirmation and reception focused course for adults called the Episcopal Enrichment Dinner Seminar. It’s been a marvelous time. Not only has it been a fantastic way to invite people into deeper relationship with the Episcopal expression of Christianity; it has also been a time of fellowship and faith exploration.
Present Hope has continued its ministry for those who have lost spouses and proven to be a
model for lay-led, clergy-supported pastoral care. We have begun a process of reinvigorating our pastoral care and prayer ministries. We intend to restart these ministries in the Spring of 2025. Finally, we began planning for The Saint John’s Bible. Even before it arrived, we were already feeling the impact of what dwelling on the Bible would do for our spirits. As we prepare for the next year, and the years ahead, may we find our imagination ignited with possibility and our hearts filled with hope for the work God is calling us to do and the community God calls us to be.
Arnie Peinado
I am privileged and honored to have served as Senior Warden and Junior Warden of Christ Church for the past four years. What a journey it has been for me!
I am pleased to once again confirm to the parish that Christ Church continues to have very positive momentum and the potential to be stronger than ever. Christ Church is blessed with talented and effective leadership, having Rev. Bowie Snodgrass at the helm, Dara Near as your next Senior Warden, Chuck Nwachuku as your next Junior Warden and a supportive and engaged Vestry and Staff. Christ Church is also fortunate to have a group of dedicated parishioners who genuinely care for each other and are willing to fully engage in parish life and serve Christ Church in a wide variety of ways for the good of fellow members.
I feel that Rev. Bowie, Dara, our excellent church staff and I have been a good team whose complimentary skills and strengths have served the parish well. It has also been wonderful to have Rev. Paul Keene join our clergy team as Assistant Rector. Rev. Paul’s passion for our church and his faith is infectious and his sermons have been inspiring. We continue to be exceedingly blessed that Rev. Bowie accepted the call of Christ Church to be our Rector.
The good news for Christ Church is that attendance continues to be strong. During 2024, the church significantly increased average Sunday attendance levels to 132 (109 in person and approximately 23 online), from 2023 average Sunday attendance levels of 104 (88 in person and 16 online). Thanks to our very able tech team and our broadcast platform in the sanctuary, our principal Sunday services are being offered in hybrid mode with increasing online attendance (a 43% increase 2024 over 2023). Interestingly, Christ Church is becoming more of a regional parish, now drawing 1/3 of its membership from more than 20 towns within 20 minutes of Millburn-Short Hills. These people will tell you that they are drawn to Christ Church by the breadth of our program offerings as well as our welcoming attitude.
Even stronger evidence of something good happening at Christ Church is strong attendance on Easter Sunday. Easter 2024 church attendance was 518 participants (369 in person and 149 online), a considerable increase over 2023. Adding to that is that Christ Church nursery school is currently operating at near capacity with 140 kids registered for the current school year. Finally, I am pleased to report that 8 new families (a total of 26 new parishioners counting spouses and kids) have joined the church since the beginning of 2024. The Holy Spirit is at work at Christ Church!
Other important developments occurring since the 2024 annual meeting include:
(1) negotiation of a three year lease (with options for two one year extensions) with our East Lane tenant the Winston School
(2) a successful stewardship campaign resulting in commitments by 146 pledging families in excess of $438,000 (3.1% above goal). Thank you Chuck Nwachuku and the stewardship committee!
(3) numerous improvements in parish safety, including the installation of much needed crosswalk lights on Highland Ave. funded by a generous year-end parish Mathias Gift. Thank you Mike Cerino, the safety committee and James Johnson!
(4) the presence of the unique and beautiful St. John’s Bible (Volume 6 containing the Gospels and Acts) during our Lenten/Easter worship season. Thank you Rev. Paul, bible champion! and
(5) a series of well attended and thoroughly enjoyable parish life events beginning with the “sauce or gravy” dinner, followed by the international foods dinner and the Evening in the Scottish Highlands choir fundraiser. Thank you Jim Sammartino, Jean Funk and the parish life committee - a good time was had by all!!
As we move forward, we need to harness the goodwill and energy generated by last year’s parish-wide strategic planning sessions and
continue to be a welcoming Christian community that includes all of us and all those who come in our doors. We also need to be open to the presence of the Holy Spirit to help us to identify opportunities, both large and small, to share our gifts.
I expect that this will continue to be a period where our parishioners fully embrace in-church and in-person worship and group activities, complimented by a strong online presence, which will facilitate a deepening of our individual and collective faith. This will enrich our parish-wide Christ Church experience and strengthen our outreach to our local, national and international community.
Clearly, 2024-25 has been a period of great parish enthusiasm and growth. I am most confident that this momentum will continue during 2025 and into 2026. It will be exciting to watch!!
Many, many thanks for your support during the past four years.
Dara Near
Hello, my Dear Fellow Parishioners. As you read through this year’s Annual Report you will certainly find that we have enjoyed another very successful twelve months at Christ Church. You will read about positive news this year from our existing ministries, as well as forward progress on many of our Strategic Goals.
On the financial front, our Stewardship Campaign, chaired ably by Chuck Nwachuku, has exceeded our 2024 pledge goal; and we have increased the number of total pledgers as well. Our relationship with the Winston School was reviewed this year and will be extended, ensuring a significant income source for the next several years. Our Nursery School remains vibrant under Jenn McGregor’s excellent oversight; and our Investment Committee continues to expertly oversee our endowment.
Separately, our many, many diverse ministries, from our beautiful Music program to Outreach Grants, Parish Life to Children’s Programs, and so many more, are all busy and thriving. Please do take the time to review all the carefully prepared reports from our talented chairpersons. We are so very blessed to have these committed church members coordinating and leading these important ministries. We are also incredibly blessed to have such excellent clergy in Rev. Bowie and Rev. Paul, guiding us as we undertake this wonderful work, in addition to our conscientious and dedicated lay staff running our offices and maintaining our buildings and grounds in perfect condition.
I would like to particularly thank Arnie Peinado for his fantastic work as our Senior Warden these past two years. In addition to his regular duties, Arnie put many extra hours, and his legal expertise, into the very important negotiation of our Winston School lease, as well as coordinating with Millburn Township and project engineers to get the CCNS pergola installed. Arnie’s dedication to CCSH is heartfelt
and truly lovely to experience. We owe him a great debt of gratitude.
Finally, as I type this one-handed! I would like to personally thank you all my dear friends here at Christ Church for the loving support I have felt from so many people this past several weeks after being injured. This amazing outreach from my church community in the form of phone calls and messages, meals prepared and delivered, flowers, cards, and frequent well-wishes, has been utterly overwhelming and wholly uplifting. You have absolutely nurtured and sustained me. I suspect that often it can become easy to take for granted what we have here at Christ Church. I could have become disconnected at home focusing on a painful injury, but you did not let that happen. I think I am quoting fellow parishioner Cynthia McChesney in saying the power of human connection is surely one of our most valuable resources. I have felt that intensely these past weeks and I am humbled and truly thankful. I am very proud to call Christ Church my home.
This past year we welcomed the addition of a Youth Handbell Choir, directed by our own Sue Bovan. They performed beautifully at both the Christmas and Epiphany liturgies, and we look forward to their performances at Easter and Pentecost this coming spring.
In the summer of 2023, our parish choir sang residencies at both Bristol and Salisbury Cathedrals in the UK. This year we continue our ministry abroad with a residency at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. Special thanks to the generosity of the Vestry to support staff participation, as well as Jean Funk who organized an unforgettable “Night in the Highlands” to raise additional funds. My eternal gratitude goes as well to Lydia Zapico for her expert management of the trip finances.
Thank you to the entire Christ Church staff for all of the support the music program has received with rehearsals, recordings and services of music throughout the year.
Thank you to the quartet for continuing to lead us, to the Parish Choir for their commitment and dedication, and to Sue Bovan for her masterful leadership of the Canterbury Choir and our new Handbell Choir.
We have welcomed several new members to the Parish Choir this past year, and we look forward to our residency at Edinburgh Cathedral in July. I am also grateful to all who have supported the purchase of the Steinway Model A in the nave. The addition of the piano has led to numerous recitals and outside rentals of our sanctuary.

Worship is the work of the people, and the Worship Committee is composed of the heads of the Acolytes, Altar Guild, Canterbury Choir, Lay Readers, Sidespersons, Ushers, Choir Master and Organist, Program Staff, Wardens, Vestry Liaison, and Committee Chair. We meet to plan and orchestrate the worship experiences for the congregation and to address worship related concerns and proposals.
In 2024, we provided in-person worship services which were also live-streamed. We continue to increase our on-line presence and have been able to connect with a broader cross-section of worshippers: those who have moved, those who are infirmed and not able to attend in person, and those who find it easier on their schedules to attend “on demand.”
Christ Church welcomed several guest preachers in 2024 including the Very Rev. Larry Evans II of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Anthony Briggs of Crossroads, and the Rev. Dr. Timothy Mulder.
The Rev. Bowie Snodgrass; the Rev. Paul Keene; the Rev. Dr. Kevin Johnson; Chris Whitaker; Dr. Andrew Moore; Angelica Nwachuku, Cat DeCiantis (head acolytes for 2023-2024); Rose Udland; Sue Bovan; Melissa Bristol; Sandra Johnson; Jean Funk; Paul Funk; John Sogliuzzo; Arnie Peindado; Dara Near; and Diane Cabush. The new head acolytes for 2024-2025 are Haddon Finan and Andy Seligson.

We continued to enjoy the devoted service of a growing group of lay readers, with the particularly joyful addition of a number of committed youth readers. Lessons and Carols was, as always, a particularly joyful time. We also piggybacked on the June potluck dinner to enjoy some fellowship, which we particularly appreciated given the individual nature of our ministry. Thank you to everyone, and all are welcome to join us!

At Christ Church in Short Hills, it has been our custom to call the lay minister who assists the clergy during the service, a “Sidesman.” They are often referred to as “Eucharistic Ministers” or “Chalicists” at other Episcopal churches. The Sidesmen assist the minister by carrying and holding the Gospel Book during the Gospel reading, serving wine during the Eucharist (helping to feed the people of God with the Body and Blood of Christ), and generally assisting the clergy during the service. Sidesmen are nominated by the Rector.
In January 2023 we revived the custom of an annual Sidesman’s dinner which is an opportunity for the group to meet with the Rector for a discussion of their ministry. All of the Sidesman currently serving are very active in multiple ministries at Christ Church and in the wider world.
Sidesmen: Juli Towell, Adaeze Nwachuku, Arnie Peinado, Ayo Onabule, Diane Cabush, Gary Shilling, Jim Sammartino, Joanne Gordon, Sam Reckford, Sarah Rosen, Yvonne Adighibe, Sandra Johnson, Patricia Shewmaker, Scott Chastain, Rob Kao

The Usher Guild is made up of Church members who serve as ushers at the 10:00 am Sunday service. Their main function is to greet and make everyone who attends welcome and comfortable. They also assist in the collection of the Offertory and directing the Congregation to Communion.
There are presently six (6) teams which serve once every 6 weeks. The team members include: John Sogliuzzo, Chuck Nwachuku, Michael Cerino, Jonny Canecchia, Paul Funk, Sam Reckford, Sue Reckford, Myles Udland, Ayo Onabule, Reade Kem, Peter Kolonia, Jack McLarty, Elaine Power, Gary Walz, Peter Bredlau, John Van Der Tuin, Todd Corbin, Don Snow, Michael Murphy, Sarah Rosen, Dara Near, Bob Near, Jessica Guo and Sean Rickard.
We have a number of new members who joined this past year but we could certainly use more. Please consider becoming a member of the Guild.
Rose Udland, Chair
The altar guild is a group of 10 dedicated parishioners who do the behind the scenes work for our weekly worship, setting the table if you will. We care for the linens, silver, bread and wine, as well as the liturgy and pew books. Four teams perform their duties on a monthly basis. We are always looking to welcome new members to this rewarding ministry.

The Rev. Dr. R. Kevin Johnson
Christ Church offers opportunities for children to learn and grow in Christian faith in a safe, loving, and encouraging environment. In Sunday School, younger children learn biblical stories using Godly Play and creating art to reinforce the message of the scripture. Older children learn to apply the lessons of the scripture using the creative
and insightful Bible Project Curriculum. Children worship with the community of faith, learning the sacred actions of worship and receiving the Eucharist with family and friends.
Throughout 2024, children and their parents were invited to participate in other activities and events to enrich their experience of faith in the context of Church. The highlights include:
• Our annual Communion Enrichment Class giving our youngest members orientation to the Eucharist and the symbols of Christian worship.
• Alleluia Banner making
for use in worship on Easter Sunday.
• Worshiping, learning, and playing at Crossroads Camp with other children and youth from Lutheran and Episcopal parishes in Northern New Jersey.
• Parents’ Nights Out where children learn and play with Dr. J and our Youth Group.
• Our annual Easter Egg Hunt, which challenges our children to find 1200+ candy-filled eggs around the church.
• Advent Wreath Making and Carol Singing with the whole parish family.
• The Christ Church Christmas Pageant with a large cast of Christ Church children & youth.
• Music-making and worship-leading in Canterbury Choir.
• Our children continue to lead worship by presenting our offerings and oblations each Sunday during the Eucharist.
Rev. Bowie and Dr. J provide monthly Bible Story Time and Chapel for our three- to- fiveyear-old friends at the Christ Church Nursery School.
We are blessed to have a skilled Sunday School and nursery staff for our younger children and a gifted children’s teacher and church member Jeanne Albano to serve faithfully with our older children.
Our volunteers and parents rise to meet the needs of Family Ministries throughout the year. As ever, our Building and Grounds Manager James Johnson works tirelessly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our youngest church members.
Leading children in the way of faith is a great responsibility and one that the people of Christ Church take very seriously. As we enter a new year of service it is our prayer that God will continue to guide our children in the way of grace.
Jennifer McGregor, Director
Established in 1962 as a mission of Christ Church, CCNS plays an active role in the education of approximately 180 children yearly. We work to provide a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for children of parishioners as well as children of Short Hills and neighboring communities.
Highlights of 2024:
We upgraded all of our registration forms from paper to online.
We piloted a successful Winter Mini Camp over February break.
After a long wait and considerable work by the church, our pavilion was finally installed in our outdoor classroom.
All teaching staff was first aid and CPR certified.
In September, we did a massive clean-out of the school and had a company come in to do a deep clean.
The CCNS administrative includes:
Mathiana Saint-Val, Assistant to the Director, Sumru Tuncer, Finance Manager, and Meredith Amico, Office Assistant. Our dedicated teaching staff consists of 13 head teachers, 17 teacher assistants, 3 specialty teachers, two floater teachers and our custodian, Joel Bonilla.
Chris Whitaker
At Christ Church, youth ministry is centered on fully integrating young people into the vibrant life of the parish. In 2024, our youth were active participants in service, worship, and fellowship, growing in faith and community.
Throughout the year, youth gave their time and energy to outreach efforts, including volunteering with IFPO, participating in ThankServing Day, and assembling care packages for college students. They also served faithfully as lay readers, ushers, and acolytes during worship services. In addition to regular youth group gatherings at Christ Church, many attended diocesan-wide events that connected them with peers from across the Diocese of Newark.
In May, nine youth were confirmed by Bishop Hughes at Calvary Church in Summit. We celebrated the confirmation of: Jude Canecchia, Jonathan Canecchia, Ella Moritz, Noah Andrews, Sean Rickard, Lucy Rickard, Zoe Joo, Grace Joo, and Daisy Bredlau.
In June, we marked Youth Sunday, a joyful celebration of our young people. The day included recognition of high school and college graduates and the presentation of the Betty F. and H.L. White Scholarship to River Bredlau, Erik Davis, Catherine DeCiantis, and Angelica Nwachuku. Graduating seniors Angelica, River, and Cat shared reflections as preachers during the service.
Additional recognitions included: Maren Finan, recipient of the Louis J. Batzle Award; Zoe Joo, recipient of the J. David Everard Award; The Suzanne Emerson Award, presented to the entire 2024 Confirmation Class
In July, youth from Christ Church joined others from around the diocese on a journey to The General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Louisville, Kentucky, led by Chris Whitaker. Participants included Lucy Rickard, Ella Moritz, Jonny Canecchia, Jude Canecchia, and Noah Andrews—who all represented Christ Church with thoughtfulness and enthusiasm. Looking ahead, we’re excited to send a group of youth on a Civil Rights Pilgrimage in
summer 2025, tracing the historic journey of the Freedom Riders through Nashville, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Atlanta—an experience that will deepen their understanding of justice, faith, and the church’s call to action.
Scouting has a long history at Christ Church. Cub Scout Pack 1 and Troop 15 were chartered in the early 1900’s and have provided leadership and learning opportunities, outdoor adventures, and fun for almost 100 years. More than 100 scouts have achieved their Eagle Scout rank through our Christ Church troop. In April, 2024, CCSH hosted Scout Sunday with our scouts and their families celebrating their connection to the church and their service to the community. CCSH also hosts their annual plant sale which raises funds for the scouts to support their ongoing activities.

This EfM group has been an active part of Christ Church’s commitment to lifelong education and Christian formation since Fall 2000.
EfM is a 4-year program of study to which participants commit one year at a timeOld Testament (Year 1), New Testament (Year 2), Church History (Year 3) and Theology (Year 4). This is a safe, fun environment in which to deepen your experience and understanding of your own faith and religious tradition while working with others on applying it to your life experiences and challenges.
The group meets on Monday evenings from 7:30 – 10:00 pm from mid-September to
Memorial Day. We meet in person meeting with a Zoom option available for those times when travel and weather make it more practical.
The goals are always the same – form a cohesive, trusting learning group which is able to deepen both our knowledge and also our understanding of how it applies to our life and calling.
Group size is required to be 6-12 so we are actively recruiting the Fall 2025.

Accomplishments in 2024-25
June: Parish Life Committee prepared several different types of pastas (with incredible help from Rev. Paul). Parish members were encouraged to bring some of their homemade sauces for everyone to sample. Wine was provided for all of us to continue the debate of “Is it called Sauce or Gravy”?
September: Our Parish Fall Picnic is a mainstay and a highlight of our yearly events. We again lit the grill for our prized hamburgers, salads et al.
October: Our Potluck Supper Event was a result of the success we had with our June “Italian Sauce Event.” Church members brought their favorite heritage dishes to share. We had food from Mexico, Africa, India, Puerto Rico, Italy, China and of course the United States. It was a huge success and provided much excitement and camaraderie. This will now be annual Parish Life Event.
December: Advent Wreath Making Supper with Caroling Event. This year our big food addition included homemade chili from the Martha and
Mary members. THANK YOU...Martha and Mary!! Committee Members:

Interweave is an interfaith learning community centered on integrated spirituality for daily living. Interweave is delighted to call Christ Church its home. Our Theme this year has been “Finding FaithNurturing Hope”
Highlights of 2024:
• Poet Wisdom - This series focused on the poetry of Wiman, Arnold, and Oliver as we reflected on the fragility of faith.
• In Search of Living Wisdom – “Life After Doom” by Brian D. McLaren and “The Not-Yet God” by Ilia Delio were books that set the table for well curated conversations that opened us to living wisdom.
• The Philadelphia Eleven –Interweave was delighted to be a part of bringing The Philadelphia Eleven Documentary to Christ Church and co-host a screening “ of the powerful story of eleven courageous women who were ordained as Episcopal priests in an act of civil disobedience.
• Interweave’s Book of the Year- We Refuse to be Enemies, How Muslims and Jews Can Make Peace, One Friendship at a Time Authors, Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby were with us virtually that evening to share the story of their own interfaith friendship and how it has endured.
• Making a Way in the Wilderness: An Advent Day Retreat – We came together to prepare our hearts for the coming of Emmanuel through prayer, meditation and sharing. The retreat was co-sponsored and colead by Christ Church and Interweave.
Thank you, for being home to so many vibrant programs and helping us to nurture spirituality in the wider community.

The Church History Discussion Group met monthly throughout the year to discuss a wide range of books that all touch on the history of religion in one way or another. We continue to meet via Zoom because it is convenient and has been working well for us.
We began the year with Paul Johnson’s A History of the Jews, which delves into the development of the Jewish faith and forces that impelled Jewish migration around the world.
We then moved on to Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford. It strayed a bit from our usual focus on the intersection of church and history, but it was a fascinating read about Genghis Khan’s rise to power and relentless expansion of the Mongol empire—including his strategy of allowing his defeated subjects to continue practicing the religion of their choice.
Late in the year we began America’s Book: The Rise and Decline of a Bible Civilization, 1794-1911 by Mark A. Noll, which examines the unique American relationship to the bible.

The Lunch Bunch, a virtual “Coffee Hour,” caters to senior members of the parish. Meeting monthly on Zoom enables friends from near and far to stay in touch. We talk about what is going on in our lives and the lives of those we love. The ability to get together has meant a great deal to us and we welcome others to join us.
• In 2024 we continued to meet virtually via Zoom at noon on the second Monday of each month.
• Attendance varies but Zoom allows us to connect members who are now far flung

Coffee hour fellowship takes place immediately after the 10am service every Sunday. It’s a wonderful opportunity for church members to connect and for visitors to feel welcomed. Parishioners are encouraged to volunteer as coffee hour hosts for one or more Sundays.
The coffee is made by James Johnson, and hosts provide sweet and savory treats. Signup is available in person during coffee hour or via Sign-Up Genius.
A special thanks to Audena, Sandra, Dendy, Ida, Peter, Yanni, Kevin, Maria, Lindy, Danny, Sandy, Arnie, Sue, Sam, and Patricia who generously hosted four or more Sundays in 2024. An additional thanks goes to Peggy B. who gathers and launders our tablecloths weekly.

Gordon & Lisa Gadsden,
Martha and Mary! is in its 14th year of ministry! We are open to all women of the parish and get together semi-monthly on Tuesday or Thursday evenings. We met six times in the Church kitchen during the calendar year; four to prepare frozen meals for those in need or church funtions with continued study of women in the bible from the book Women of the Bible by Ann Spangle plus social time together, and two for fun together with our Christmas Cookie Exchange and Spring Pot-Luck dinner. A PDF of the optional reading was emailed before each meeting.
This group is a drop-in whenever you can group offering shared ministry in parishioner support, bible study, and parish life. We met in-person; October 22nd (Casseroles), November 21st (Chili for Advent Wreath and Caroling party). December 19th (Cookie Exchange), February 13th (Carrot cake for choir hosted parish-wide fundraising event “An Evening in the Scottish Highlands”, April 15th (Lentil Soup for Maundy Thursday), May/June

The Thursday Group is a small, vibrant faith ministry at Christ Church that’s been going strong for four years.
Based on a model for small group ministry presented by the Diocese in January 2021, six CCSH members signed up for a Lenten “experiment.” We began meeting by Zoom for one hour at the same time every week (Thursdays at 12:15). We follow a simple 4-part “recipe,” starting with gathering; then sharing a personal reflection on the question “where have you seen the Holy Spirit at work in your life recently?”; followed
by a reading and discussion of that day’s scripture passage; and we conclude with prayer. Throughout the 60 minutes, we talk, share, and connect, each finding it remarkably helpful to participate in a regular, midweek, spiritual practice. It is striking how each member will often comment on how integral the group has become to their individual spiritual lives.
We do break up our schedule with periodic in-person celebrations, often around a meal, but also acknowledge that one reason this group has had such longevity is that a regular Zoom call built around a weekday lunchtime makes it easy to participate.
The format is accessible and adaptable, and we’re eager to extend an invitation to others within CCSH who may wish to establish similar groups. We’d be happy to offer guidance to anyone interested in setting up their own!

The mission of the Outreach Grants Committee (the “Committee”) is to make grants in our immediate community, the Diocese of Newark, the State of NJ and where appropriate, on a national and international level with a focus on distressed areas and lesserdeveloped countries where there is a sufficient relationship to Christ Church or one of its members. Additionally, the Committee will make
recommendations to the Vestry for engagement opportunities for our parishioners with organizations that receive grants from us.
In 2024, the Committee made decisions to award twentytwo grants totaling $72,800 to twenty-one organizations while turning down three applications for either not meeting our criteria or we identified greater need among the other applicants. An astounding ten of the twentyone organizations were new applicants and grant recipients this year. Six of the recipients have missions that are focused on combating food insecurity in our community and received a total of $25,500.
The full list of grantees and the description of their missions can be found on our website: www.christchurchshorthills. org/grants

Headquartered in New York City, Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) is the charitable arm of the Episcopal Church. Led by Dr. Robert Radtke, its President and CEO since 2005, ERD has three primary goals: aiding women around the world, both economically and socially, particularly addressing domestic violence; promoting childhood development, including healthcare and education; and focusing on climate change.
In addition, the organization responds to short-term crises, including natural disasters and wars. ERD has continued to help Ukrainian refugees with food, clothing, and medical supplies. Teaming with HIAS, ERD provided PTSD counseling for the survivors of the Oct. 7 attack in Israel; and ERD, through the Diocese of Jerusalem, remains one of the primary sponsors of the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza.
This year the Christ Church ERD campaign set a $5,000 fundraising goal. The campaign
included the inclusion of ERD Lenten Devotionals in the daily email campaign to promote prayer and awareness of ERD’s work. Jim McBride gave a talk at both of the services on February 25, and, on March 10, the church hosted Tamara Plummer, ERD’s Program Officer, who gave sermons at 8 am and 10 am about the importance of ERD’s work to our Christian faith. The campaign raised over $26,000, including $20,000 from one of the congregation’s families. We are especially grateful to Chris Whitaker, who set up the CCSH donation page and promoted the campaign through the weekly bulletins and The Messenger.

• During 2024 IFPO supported an average of 700 households each week - double the pre-pandemic level.
• Despite the high levels served, the need for food and essential items (diapers, menstrual products and toiletries) continued to grow.
• In 2024 we expanded and renovated our space to finally move our services inside to better serve our population
• We provided regular health screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as childhood immunizations and boosters for Covid and flu through partnerships with Summit Health and RWJ Barnabas.

Continued generous support by Christ Church parish members during 2024 is very encouraging. As I reported last year our parish has grown both in terms of numbers and contributions from within 07078 zip code as well as from other areas due to the offerings we have at Christ Church. During the period from 20132017 pledges declined a total of 20%, contrast that to 20182024 pledging which has gone up a total of 15%.
Total Income of $1,481,389 (excluding overage contribution by CCNS) in 2024 exceeded Total Income of $1,473,427 in 2023. Contribution from CCNS during 2024 was lower than 2023 by $103,463.
Total Expenses during 2024 was $82,262 (approximately 5.7%) higher than 2023 as we had full year cost for the Assistant Rector and other general expenses.
Overall our Net Income for 2024 was $117,888 lower than Net Income of $295,651 for 2023 (mainly due to receiving less overages from CCNS).
Christ Church continues to be blessed with significant levels of contributions from Pledges, Endowments and Rental income from two schools. Our significant reliance on Endowments and Rental Income remains a known concentration risk, though it is the key reason we are able to support many activities.
Endowment funds at the end of 2024 was $9,098,417 compared to 2023 balance of $8,235,017.
Future operating lease income from two schools during 2025, 2026 are expected to contribute $679,752 and $698,702.
Audited financials are in final stages of preparation and will be available by mid May 2025.
I would like to recognize diligent work and support received from Bonnie Rountree (Assistant Treasurer) and Lydia Zapico (Finance Manager).
Additionally I wish to thank all faithful members of this parish for their continued and generous support to this church.

Dear parishioners of Christ Church Short Hills, as we gather to reflect on our shared journey of faith and service during our annual meeting, the Stewardship Committee is filled with immense gratitude for your unwavering commitment to our Church’s mission shown through the success of our stewardship campaign. Together, as we work to make a tangible difference in the lives of the under-resourced within our local community, your generous pledge in 2024/25 has been the cornerstone of these efforts.
Over the past five years, from 2021 to 2025, we have witnessed incredible growth in our pledge campaign. Through your steadfast support, pledge contributions has grown by an inspiring 18%.
Notably in the past year alone 2023/24 into 2024/25, we see a remarkable 7.1% increase in pledge commitments aligning with our Step-Up and Mathias gift efforts. This upward trend
is a testament to your faith, dedication, and belief in our collective mission to serve others. Every contribution you make allows us to extend our outreach, provide vital resources, and support those in need. Whether it’s ensuring meals for the hungry or offering shelter to the homeless, your pledges are the lifeline of our church’s outreach programs.
In addition to our campaign success, we also welcomed two external speakers whose organizations were recipients of our outreach grants and heard from two of our fellow
parishioners on what motivates them to give and support our Church’s mission. We also hosted a Cheerful Giver’s reception which was well attended. As we look to the future, let us continue to build on this momentum, by continuing to Step Up for CCSH and inviting others to join us in spreading kindness and transforming lives.
Finally, I want to recognize members of the committee for their hard work and diligence. The team is comprised of Dara Near (co-chair), Sarah Rosen, Don Snow, Peg Shilling, Juli Towell, Anne Miller, Alison
Corbin, Richard Tornambe, and our clergy the Revs. Bowie Snodgrass & Paul Keene. We are also thankful for the beautiful creatives Chris Whitaker continues to produce that tell our story. We are eager to grow the team and welcome new members to help generate fresh and new ideas.

The Investment Committee meets quarterly to manage the investment of the endowment funds of the Church. It is governed by the Investment Policies and Procedures adopted by the Vestry that state the investment objective to be to achieve a return over a period of years equal to the rate of inflation, plus the growth of retained principal of 1-2% per year, plus the distribution to the operating budget of the Church. The projected cash distribution for 2025 is 4.25% of the three-year moving average of the endowment’s market value, totaling $349,134 and fixed income funds (including commingled funds and ETFs), and cash equivalents.
Though short-term measurement periods are less meaningful, the endowment outperformed the stated total return target of the Investment Policy in 2024 due to strong performance across most public equity and fixed income markets. Of more importance, however, the tenyear annualized return of 8.0% is consistent with the long-term return objectives given the modest inflation environment that has prevailed over most of that period, as well as the Church’s prudent spending policy. In relative terms, the endowment’s one-year return of +14.2% underperformed the
primary custom benchmark – a 60/30/10 blend of S&P 500/AA bonds/money market funds, which returned +16.3%. This was largely driven by the smaller look-through exposure to U.S. mega cap growth companies compared to the market cap weighted S&P 500 equity component of the benchmark.
The CCSH endowment outperformed the net return of the Episcopal Church (ECF) Pooled Funds by 4.8% in 2024, marking the 12th consecutive year of outperformance across a wide variety of market environments. Over the past ten years, the CCSH endowment has outperformed the net return of the ECF Pooled Funds by 2.4% on an annualized basis. A table of the investment portfolio of the endowment as of December 31, 2023 and 2024 is attached.
More about the CCSH Investment Committee:
• The Committee benefits from the collective depth of experience of our group, as well as the diversity of perspectives of the individual members. Importantly, there is a shared ethos of mutual respect, and everyone’s thoughts and contributions are valued.
• While there is a clear agenda at each meeting,
the tone is intentionally conversational; often delving into a rich and varied set of relevant investment topics. As a result, members genuinely enjoy the Committee’s ongoing dialogue and debate (or at least they say that they do).
• The Committee adheres to a simple and repeatable investment oversight process, which brings a high degree of continuity to its collective decisionmaking.
• The Church is in a uniquely fortunate position to have the level of endowment support that it has. Endowment spending provides a meaningful amount of our annual operating revenue, and the past, current, and future stewardship of the Investment Committee is an important intangible asset of the Church, even though it doesn’t appear on the balance sheet.
The Committee has openings for additional members for three-year terms. If you have experience in asset management, fund investing or related fields and would like to join the Committee, please contact the Chair.
