Notes on the Program Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924) was a composer, organist, pianist, and teacher. Considered one of the foremost French composers of his generation, he was a major influence on many 20th century composers.

The youngest of six children, Fauré’s talent emerged early, and aged nine he was sent to the École Niedermeyer music college in Paris, to train as an organist and choirmaster. His teachers included Camille Saint-Saëns, who taught Fauré piano, and encouraged him to compose.

Fauré worked as a private piano teacher, and as choirmaster and organist at many prestigious churches in Paris. It was not until his mid-30s that he began to devote time to composing, and it would be years - when the composer was in his 50s - before his music would gain wider and, ultimately, international acclaim.

In 1896, Fauré became a professor at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire. Appointed Director in 1905, he taught until the age of 75, mentoring such composers as Georges Enesco, the sisters Nadia and Lili Boulanger and, most famously, Maurice Ravel.

Over the last 20 years of his life, Fauré struggled with growing deafness, and a “systemic distortion” that resulted in his registering high sounds a third lower and low sounds a third higher. Fauré described this distressing disability as a “veritable cacophony.” Fauré died in 1924 at the age of 79, leaving a wide range of compositions, all of which have sustained a prominent place within the classical music repertoire for almost a century.

Requiem, Op. 48

Fauré composed his Requiem in D minor between 1887 and 1890. The work has seven movements scored for woodwinds and brass, timpani, organ, strings, and harp. Soprano and baritone soloists are featured, along with an SATB chorus. The Requiem is filled with beautiful melodies that capture the proper mood of the text, and is considered a favorite among choral singers.

The Requiem was first performed in the United States at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1931. Today you will hear a version of the Requiem orchestrated by John Rutter.

Rutter rediscovered the original chamber version of the work in the early 1980s.

Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11

Fauré composed Cantique de Jean Racine in 1865, when he was just 20. Originally scored for four-part chorus and organ, he revised the piece for chorus and chamber orchestra in 1906.

The words sung by the chorus are a translation by 17th-century French poet Jean Racine of a Latin hymn, Consors paterni luminis, attributed to the 4th-century bishop of Milan, St. Ambrose.

The piece was written for a competition held just before Fauré graduated from the École Niedermeyer in Paris. Although the judges—who included Camille Saint-Saëns—had specified a more traditional Latin text, they eventually awarded Fauré first prize for his gentle, emotionally pitch-perfect entry.

George Mathew, Conductor Award-winning conductor George Mathew is the founder and Artistic Director of Music For Life International, a global social enterprise based in New York, which creates social impact and public diplomacy through music. Mr. Mathew has made appearances in the United States, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and Europe in recent seasons as conductor, pianist and speaker.

Mr. Mathew and Music for Life International returned to Carnegie Hall in January, 2019 for their eighth global humanitarian concert, a benefit performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony dedicated to the plight of the Rohingya refugees fleeing genocide in Myanmar. These humanitarian concerts, presented at Carnegie Hall, have brought together hundreds of musicians from over 120 of the world’s most distinguished ensembles including the New York, Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, MET Orchestra, Boston Symphony, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, the Emerson and Guarneri Quartets and many others. George Mathew and MFLI have been profiled by the global media, including BBC WORLD TV and Radio, Public Radio International, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, New York magazine, the US State Department, Radio France, Voice of America, NY1 television, National Public Radio, and Musical America.

George Mathew has spoken on music and social impact around the world at such venues as the United Nations, Acumen Fund, IBM India, UNDP, TEDx and INK Conferences. In 2016, he and Music for Life International were honored with the Robert and JoAnn Bendetson Award for Public Diplomacy by the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University for their services to global public diplomacy through music. He has served as Artistic Director and Conductor of the New Years Eve Concert for Peace at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York and Founder Conductor of the Young People’s Concerts at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. Mr. Mathew holds degrees from Amherst College, University of Minnesota and Manhattan School of Music. Andrew Paul Moore, Organist & Choirmaster Dr. Andrew Moore was appointed Organist and Choirmaster of Christ Church in Short Hills in 2011. In 2015 he was responsible for the restoration of the church’s historic AeolianSkinner pipe organ, along with the addition of a new antiphonal organ in the rear of the sanctuary. In 2016 he directed the Parish Choir of Christ Church in its first residency at Bristol Cathedral, and will return to England for a residency at Salisbury Cathedral this July.

Dr. Moore is the Chairman of the Music Department at the Pingry School in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where he has

taught Music Theory and Choral Music for over 30 years. Dr. Moore earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and holds a Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from The Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under John Weaver, chair of the Organ Department. While at Juilliard he held the Valentine, Rudkins, and Vernon de Tar Scholarships for Organ. He studied piano with Martha Massena, improvisation with Gerre Hancock, choral conducting with Richard Westenburg, and harpsichord with Lionel Party, the acclaimed harpsichordist of the New York Philharmonic.

A gifted performer who has played recitals throughout the United States, Germany and Great Britain, Dr. Moore is a frequent juror of both local and regional American Guild of Organist Competitions. Dr. Moore is a member of the Anglican Association of Musicians, and the Royal College of Organists.

Charles Schneider, Baritone Baritone Charles Schneider has performed more than 30 operatic roles throughout the country since his professional debut in the summer of 1999. Some of his favorites include: Figaro (Le nozzle Di Figaro), Conte du Luna (Il Trovatore), and Schaunard (La Boheme). In Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus he was hailed as a “flawless baritone“ in his “charmingly malicious” portrayal of Dr. Falke”(Toby Grace, Out in Jersey). Most recently Charles has performed the role of The Bonze in Boheme Opera NJ’s 2023 critically acclaimed production of Madam Butterfly and he will be singing the role of The Sacristan in Tosca for Garden State Opera in early May. As a soloist, Charles has sung the major choral works of Bach, Handel, Mendelssohn, and Fauré with organizations such as The North Carolina Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, and The New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra. He is on the voice faculties of Rider University and The Lawrenceville School and is the Director of Music at Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church in Liberty Corner, NJ.

Tharanga Goonetilleke, Soprano Critically acclaimed Soprano Tharanga Goonetilleke was born and raised in Sri Lanka. In addition to the USA, she has performed to great acclaim in Europe, Canada, India, Uganda, Vietnam and South Korea.

Tharanga made her solo debut as a teenager with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka in 1998 while she was a student at Colombo’s CMS Ladies’ College. She became the first Sri Lankan woman and only the 3rd Sri Lankan to attend The Juilliard School in New York City. There she obtained her Master of Music degree in Voice and Opera, as well as her Artist Diploma for Opera Studies. While at The Juilliard

School she was a recipient of several awards including the Makiko Narumi Memorial prize, the Steve Novick grant and the Sing for Hope award. In 2022 Tharanga was invited to be on the faculty of the “Summer with Juilliard” program.

Although primarily trained as a singer, Tharanga is also an accomplished visual artist. Her visual art has been exhibited in galleries in New York and New Jersey. In 2022 she collaborated with the Glimmerglass festival and illustrated the children’s book, The Jungle Book, which was a companion to the Opera The Jungle Book by Kamala Sankaram and Kelley Rourke. Named a TED fellow in 2015, she has given talks and performances at the mainstage TED conference and several TEDx events.

Tharanga continues to perform as an opera singer and as a visual artist. She runs a private music studio for aspiring musicians, is a faculty member at The Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts and serves on the board of trustees at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. She currently lives in Short Hills, NJ with her husband and two young children.

Music at Christ Church At Christ Church in Short Hills, music is integral to our ministry. Music builds community and brings us all closer to the Divine. We welcome parishioners, local area residents and youth of all ages to join us in singing God’s Praise.

Our Choirs The Parish Choir of Christ Church is open to all, from middle school age to adult, sharing in worship with song. The choir is comprised of volunteer voices and professional section leaders that sing at the 10am Eucharist each Sunday. Parish Choir activities begin in September and continue through early June. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:15pm to 8:45pm, and on Sundays at 9am.

The Canterbury Choir is open to all elementary age children. Rehearsals are every Sunday at 11:15am from September through early June. Our energetic youth choir sings on All Saints’ Day and Advent I, as well as at Christmas, Palm Sunday, Easter and Youth Sunday. Members of the Canterbury Choir receive musical training in preparation to move up to the Parish Choir.

The Festival Choir is comprised of members of the parish and local area residents that unite in song as one voice for special music festivities, concerts, Evensong services, or special feast days. The Festival Choir rehearses with sectional voice leaders and instrumentalists to perform selected major works from noted religious composers.
