My Week on the Isle of Man On Thursday 4th October I flew to the Isle of Man with my friend Veronica, to stay with our other friend Val. Val, Veronica and I had been on the junior choir together in our teens. We had a good flight and were met by Val and her husband Graham. Graham drove us to the house by the scenic route which was lovely. We had lunch, then the three girls went for a walk on the promenade in Douglas. We sat admiring the view, while eating ice cream. In the evening we went to choir practise at Kirk Braddan Church, where Graham is organist and choir master. Val sings in the choir. Veronica and I tried robes on ready for Sunday morning. Friday morning we went into town shopping. Afterwards we went to Langness. We walked past Jeremy Clarkson's house and watched the seals in the bay. On the way back through Castletown Val pointed out where they used to live when they first went to the Isle, also King William College where Graham used to be head of music. On Saturday we caught the bus to Peel. Val was singing Choral Evensong at St Germain Cathedral with Voceo Insulae ( Kirk Braddan choir and other singers ) . While Val was rehearsing, Veronica and I went to the shops and walked along the promenade, then sat taking in the view of the castle. Later we went to listen to the choir singing which was wonderful. The introit was To Thee O Lord by Rachmaninoff.

Responses by Ayleward, Lords

Prayer by Lionel Pike. Magnificate and Nunc Dimittis by Noble in A minor. Anthem In Pace Iin Idipsum Dormian by Blitheman. Psalm 32 chant by Wesley The final response by Knight. Sunday morning we went to Church and sang in the choir. The Anthem which was chosen by Val was Let all the World in every Corner Sing by Harris. We used to sing it at

by Rutter. The Church was decorated with beautiful flowers and baskets of fruit and veg for Harvest. There was a Faith lunch afterwards, but Val had booked us Sunday lunch at a restaurant in Tholton. The meal was wonderful. Then we walked around the Glen at Wyllin Sulby. We finished the day with Songs of Praise. Monday we met Joan ( E mma Currah's daughter ) and her husband Ernest for coffee in the Chocolate Fairy cafe. They both send their love to everyone. Then we drove through Castle Town overlooking Port St Mary and Port Erin. We looked at some Manx houses then went on to Cregneash, watched seals in the bay next to the Calf of Man at the Sound. Tuesday Graham went to yoga, so we went to Douglas headland and walked through the glen. We all went for lunch at Niarbyl, which is a beautiful place. Later we went to Port Erin. As we were walking to the cafe we saw a small van which had fallen down a cliff. Luckily no one was in it. Wednesday we went to see Laxey wheel, had lunch in the corn mill cafe. We got the electric train back to Douglas. We had an ice cream then went to the local art gallery. Thursday after breakfast we sang O Turn Mines Eyes Away, and O Lovely Peace which is in two parts. Songs we sang in the junior choir. It was a lovely ending to a wonderful week with such fabulous friends. Unfortunately when Val and Graham got back home in the afternoon their garden was flooded.

Christ Church choir sing at Ashton Parish church “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me”. John 17 verse 21 King James Bible Our church choir has sung at Ashton Parish Church on several occasions and Sunday 30th September was a wonderful Ecumenical evening of worship. We experienced Christian unity as various denominations joined together to praise God. There was a solo by a young boy, Samuel Williamson; items by the Good News Gospel Church and St. John’s choir Failsworth. Our own Christ Church choir sang a hymn written by Mrs May Foreman to the tune ‘Kingsfold’ and ‘Hebridean Gloria’ by Barbara Rusbridge

Mrs Kath Nawaz, soprano from our choir at Christ Church choir sang ‘Pie Jesu’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber

Canon Johnson School Year 5 read the story of Noah and considered the mysteries within it. The one they considered the most was ‘Is there really a God in Heaven?’ The children thought about times when they considered God had been with them or helped them. They then turned their thoughts into questions in a poem. At the end of their poem, they answered their question. Is there a God in Heaven? Is He with me when I’m scared? Is He with me when I’m sorry? Does God give me courage? Is God there for me? Do I need God? Where is God? What does God do when everybody needs Him? Do I believe there is a God? Yes I do Reece Collins

Is there a God in Heaven? Does He help me choose the right path? Does He stop me doing the wrong thing? Does He help me when I am worried? Does He help me whilst I’m asleep? Does He calm me down when I’m scared? Does He encourage me in my studies? Do I believe there is a God in Heaven? Yes I do Mohammed Rashid Is there a God in Heaven? Does He watch everything I do? Does He help me achieve my goals? Is He there when I am feeling frightened? Does He keep my family safe? Does He help me choose the right path? Does He care for me with all His heart? Does He help me be strong when my family leave me? Do I believe there is a God in Heaven? Yes I do Lily Press

Which Way To Go From birth to death there lies a road This road is where we'll bear our load. From being born we listen close And learn from those we love the most. As we grow, we learn much more About the world and who we are. What is our role, what must we do? As on the road we note each clue. Temptation comes in many forms Promising there'll be no storms. The choice is yours, it's up to you The road now forked, what shall we do. Two ways are now beneath our feet Will we go on or cry defeat. One wide, one narrow, we must choose If we will win or if we'll lose. A voice call's out "Come now with me" Forget the One who sets you free. My road is wide, more space to play Tomorrow is another day. But through the noise there comes a sound A voice that says, "We're homeward bound" Come choose the narrow way so true And I will always be with you. Christos May Foreman

Our October speaker was Pauline Saxon who gave a very informative and interesting talk on the three revolutions: agricultural, industrial and transport. The working class had struggled for years, women often died in childbirth, children rarely reached twenty years. When the men were not away fighting in wars they had time to look at ways to improve the families’ lifestyles. Farmers realised by reducing the male livestock, families could eat better and over decades they were healthier and lived longer. They had made use of the animal skins for leather and the horns used for buttons. These items were sold to buy other produce. Others worked on steam engines which were invaluable in engineering. Spinning and weaving benefitted with the Spinning Jenny and larger weaving looms and eventually many woollen mills appeared and various other types of engineering workshops thrived. The canals could be ideal waterways and so barges appeared which were used to transport goods. Henry Rolls built the first Rolls Royce car in the Manchester area, many say these Manchester inventions put the Great in Great Britain.

A Rhapsody to Christ

Christ is our redeemer, at his cross we pray, With his love to guide us along his chosen way, The comfort at his altar, provides us with his care, That he gives to everyone of us, the love that we must share.

We cannot live without his words That comforts our troubled souls, And without his death we could not see, The miracle when he rose.

We all must love everyone who lives, To follow his Christian creed, Making each and all mankind Implanted with his seed.

Michael Clarke

At the Cenotaph

The bomb was dropped and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were more or less obliterated and peace in the world had finally arrived when Japan finally surrendered. My dad was finally with us for good, and the horrendous slaughter of fine young men, who had never kissed or even held hands with a young lady, had ended. Running home from Sunday school on a cold wet November just after Bonfire Night, I noticed a small crowd opposite our front door, around the Cenotaph erected in Victoria Park opposite the house where I lived; but being cold and hungry, it was my priority to get sat down at the dinner table for my roast beef Sunday dinner. It was not until I was finally a Lifeboy in the 3rd Denton that the significance of the assembly gathered at the Cenotaph became known to me, especially the blowing of the bugle from the Boys Brigade’s solo Bugler and the poignant strains of the ‘Last Post’ pervaded the wintry air, bringing home to every one of us the sacrifices that these fine young men who gave their young lives for us so that peace would come at last. As the years gallop past, and we are now in the second decade of a new century, with all the rush, rush, rush, the modern gizmos and gadgets polluting everywhere, we must never, ever, forget the tremendous sacrifices that these fine young men gave for us so that we can reach our ripe old age, and even the freedom just to pray to our Lord Jesus Christ in the perfect sanctity of a fine church. Lord, be with these fine young men, now and forever.
