WELCOME

Chris Petruzzi, Fine Arts Director

On behalf of the Fine Arts Department, I'm honored to welcome you to our High School Fine Arts Fringe Festival. North Broward Preparatory School's productions are always notable, but I'm incredibly grateful this year for the many creative, quality opportunities that our artists have been afforded (like this one) to safely and fully engage in the art they love. Congratulations to our young artists and dedicated faculty who have given many hours of creative and joyful rehearsal to bring this exceptional production to life. It is gratifying to witness them continue to grow artistically, creatively, academically, and in self-concept through their work together. I'd also like to take this occasion to thank the many supporters who contributed so much to this evening's success. Chris Petruzzi Fine Arts Director

WELCOME In Juliet's Garden William Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all times, his works enduring the span of over four centuries. Not only are the plots of his thirty seven plays riveting, but the Bard (as Shakespeare is commonly known) writes characters which ask us to examine who we are as individuals and our functions within society. In his play Hamlet he writes, “the purpose of playing…is to hold as ’twere, the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure.” Despite Elizabethan England being under the rule of a strong unmarried woman, the role of females in Elizabethan society were to remain subservient to their male counterparts. Women had two socially acceptable options: marriage or the nunnery. Interesting to also consider, women were not allowed to perform in the theatre, which left all the female characters not only written by a man, but also portrayed by men. Though each leading lady Shakespeare penned displays immense courage, defiance, and mental agility, his leading ladies often find themselves on less than equal terms with the men in their plays. Some of Shakespeare’s heroines cross dressed to be taken seriously, while others faced fatal consequences as a result of challenging the patriarchal structures of honor, shame, violence. What message was Shakespeare sending by writing strong women only to punish them? Was Shakespeare truly a feminist, or did he merely reenforce gender stereotypes? The play In Juliet’s Garden wittingly asks us to closely examine whether or not Shakespeare’s plays can withstand the criticism of his very own heroines. Juliet, the Nurse, Ophelia, Desdemona, Portia, and Katharina take us on a whimsical and humorous journey on challenging the plots which comment on their functions of women in a male dominated world. These ladies suggest even Shakespeare himself could use some edits to better conform to the “woke culture” of his modern audiences. What would the Bard choose to pen in today’s conversation of gender and racial inequality? As a lifelong student of Shakespeare, I feel incredibly fortunate to collaborate and explore this work with such an amazing group of young women. Just as each of Shakespeare’s women were equipped with enormous depth, these young artists are equipped with authentic passion and commitment which they are eager to share with you tonight. Please enjoy, and feel free to laugh and wonder along with us. Jeanine Gangloff Levy Director of In Juliet’s Garden

WELCOME Antigone Now Antigone Now by Melissa Cooper is a condensed modern adaptation of a 2,000-year-old play depicting a girl who stands against power to find justice for her family, her people and herself, but it comes at a deadly cost. The original text, centers on themes of pride, power, greed and corruption. Approaching this text today the story is strikingly relevant. As our society currently navigates a shifting reality, mass separation from loved ones, as well as civil and political unrest—line such as “what are you doing out after curfew” or “there were riots in the streets last night…Creon’s police sprayed tear gas and shot rubber bullets” feel thrust out of our current dayto-day conversations. Our production begins in the aftermath of a war brought about by Eteocles’ refusal to concede his term of leadership and transfer of power to his brother Polyneices per the agreement made upon the death of their father, King Oedipus. This pursuit of power ends in the death of both brothers leaving their beloved city in ruins suffering. Beginning our story at the end—Ismene—sister of Eteocles, Polyneices and Antigone, struggles between her instinct to drown out suffering by falling deeper into her isolated world and Antigone’s plea of opening herself to “let the sounds and smells [of the outside world] roll in.” Antigone, is steeped in the outside world. She follows her impulses, seeking justice with determinate passion, often leading to trouble. Although at times she seems wise beyond her years, we are reminded in the end that she is a but a child full of naïveté as she fearfully faces the “doorway into the dark.” We get to know the newly crowned king of Thebes, Creon, through the carefully curated mask of noble confidence. Creon, who uses fear mongering, lament for the safety and comfort of days gone by and the promise of a prosperous new era to demand unwavering loyalty to their agenda fueled by personal pain. Creon blames Polyneices for the war, and thereby the death of their eldest son Megareus. Penalty of disobedience to this law, and by extension Creon, is death. When Antigone defies the law to bury her brother, Creon reveals their bilateral view of the law—an expectation of strict compliance laid upon the citizens of Thebes while holding themself outside of this obligation. Demonstrated when initially offering niece, Antigone, absolution by asking “did you know the Law?” Although every character, at some point, pleads with Creon to reconsider the unduly harsh punishment it is not until the support Thebes’s citizens is lost that Creon considers the consequence of their prideful action; losing everything they love, including themselves in the process. The play may be named for Antigone but the internal struggle between strict obedience to human’s law or dedication to a higher moral good are navigated by Ismene. The two sisters have an undeniably strong connection often falling into the roles of mother—daughter, teacher–student; each weaving seamlessly in and out of the roles to fulfil the needs of her sister. It is Antigone’s unwavering dissent against their aunt Creon’s prideful law, the antithesis of Ismene’s obedience, that motivates Ismene to finally listen to the world with hope for a new future and take action in choosing life. So, we end where we began, looking forward to the future with hope that the story will change with Ismene as she carries the “sound of a word spoken two thousand years ago.” Whether she will be able to utilize what she has learned to break the cycle, creating a new future, remains to be seen. “Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Who breathed your breath before you? Whose words are inside of you…now?” April Sigman-Marx Director of Antigone Now Copyright © 2021 Playbill Online Inc. All marks used by permission.

WELCOME Eurydice Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice takes the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and pulls it into the modern world. In the original myth, Orpheus’ is remembered for his unmatched musical ability. On the night of his marriage to Eurydice, she dies. In an effort to save her, Orpheus travels to the Underworld where he makes a deal with Hades. In order to save Eurydice from death, she must follow Orpheus out of the Underworld. The catch is that if he looks back, even for a moment, Eurydice will be returned to the Underworld. All he has to do is trust, but he is overtaken by his fear. He looks back at his love and loses Eurydice forever. Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice takes the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and pulls it into the modern world. Ruhl wrote this play as a way to process the grief of losing her father. Grief, memory, and poetic imagery echoe throughout this piece. We see Eurydice pursue a relationship with the musical genius, Orpheus and later learn that her father was also a musician. We watch the heartbreak of a father unable to attend the ritual of his daughter’s wedding. We see his greatest hope realized when Eurydice arrives in the underworld and watch as he helps her remember her lived experiences and as he chooses to sacrifice his own happiness in an attempt to return Eurydice to her life with Orpheus. We watch as Orpheus fights to return to Eurydice and as Eurydice asks her father all the questions she must have wondered after his death. Ruhl’s play, centers Eurydice and focuses on her relationships to her husband, her father, and her self. If the original telling is an investigation of how fear can separate us from our destiny, Ruhl’s re-imagined version investigates how fear and grief can paralyze us in our lives. It investigates how and if we should move on, what we fight for, and when we stop. This play is a deeply poetic examination of grief - of the waves of loss that emanate out when we lose a parent, and of how we make sense of our identity when they are gone. Ultimately we see a Eurydice torn between her self, Orpheus, and her Father. Who will she choose? Does she even have a choice? Special Thanks to Michelle and Tiffany Lutz for all their work to pull this together on top of all their other responsibilities! Suzanne Ankrum-Harris Director of Eurydice
