We celebrate love!

Over the past ten years, we have had the privilege to feature local newlyweds and some of Metro Detroit's finest wedding vendors. Our goal is to help soon-to-be brides and grooms find the perfect product and service to make their wedding day unforgettable.

It can be very time-consuming to research, call, and visit different businesses when planning a wedding. That's where we come in. Detroit Wedding Day magazine and website can help answer many common questions before the first telephone call is made or an internet search is completed. We designed the magazine to make it easy to find vendor services, pricing, and unique business features.

As you use the magazine to plan your wedding, we politely request that you mention Detroit Wedding Day when calling or emailing any of our featured advertising partners. Many of these businesses have great rewards to offer you when you let them know that you learned about them from our magazine and website.

Also, visit our website and follow us on social media. We love to engage with our readers and have a little fun along the way. In closing, we celebrate your love and hope that you have a truly blessed marriage and happy new life together.

SPECIAL OFFERS just for you! That's right, only Detroit Wedding Day readers get 'em! But you have to mention us— so don't forget!

Attending Wedding Shows Tips:

Wedding shows are good events to attend to jumpstart your wedding plans. For couples just beginning to plan their wedding, attending a bridal show can help generate ideas for your special day.

BE OPEN-MINDED

Each show is unique. Be open to new ideas and different types of businesses that you may not have thought about before.

For instance, you may be attending a show to explore wedding reception venues but then unexpectedly meet an insurance agent who shares the benefits of purchasing wedding insurance. Or maybe you were exploring bridal salons but suddenly discover a jazz band accepting wedding gigs.

BE PREPARED

Be mindful that you are attending the event to learn, so think like a student. It’s wise to bring a pen, notepad, and tote bag to collect literature from vendors participating in the event.

Additionally, if you know that a company you are considering using is an exhibitor at the show, have some questions already prepared for them.

PLAN EXHIBITOR BOOTH VISITS

If the wedding show promoter publishes a list of participating vendors in advance, decide before even arriving at the show

who are the top vendors on your list to visit during the show.

BE EMAIL READY

When visiting vendor’s booths, the business representatives will most assuredly ask for your email address for marketing purposes. Therefore, consider creating a dedicated email address devoted solely to wedding planning activities. Doing this makes it much easier to manage emails from wedding vendors.

TEAM BRIDE

It is not a bad idea to bring your significant other or a trusted advisor with you to the event. They can act as a sounding board while giving you support. Moreover, having them attend the event with you builds excitement and makes it more enjoyable.

LABEL IT

If you have ever been to any trade shows in the past, you already know that many vendors will entice you to enter contests and sign-up for special offers. By knowing this ahead of time, you can prepare in advance.

Consider bringing a sheet of peel-off mailing labels providing your name and address. Use preprinted labels to effortlessly add your contact info to forms and contest entries instead of repeatedly writing it on each vendor form.

WORKSHOPS & SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

Many events have special programs scheduled during the show.

If possible, find out what time featured attractions will take place, allowing you to plan when and where you need to be, making the most out of the event.

VIRTUAL EVENTS

If the event is an online virtual event, when possible, test your computer or mobile device ahead of time to ensure that you can connect with the web conferencing platform. Also, add the event to your calendar as a reminder.

Before the event begins, turn off phone and computer notifications to help keep you focused on the show. When possible, schedule appointments ahead of time with participating vendors with whom you want to meet.

HAVE FUN!

Most importantly, enjoy the event. Attending wedding shows in person or virtually can be a lot of fun and informative. Not only will you leave with great advice and ideas for your wedding, but you may even have the chance to win great prizes from the event’s sponsors.

Following these suggestions can help make your wedding show attendance worthwhile.

Quality Time, Road Trips, and Love

A look at why RVs are increasing in popularity.

Adventure-seeking nature lovers who enjoy the open road and want to spend romantic quality time with each other under the stars might find going on an experiential excursion to be the ideal getaway. As a result, the trend to go RVing (or glamping if you would) is on the rise.

With the impact of Covid, RV travel has been increasingly more popular, even among younger RV enthusiasts. In a recent RV Owner Demographic Profile study conducted by the marketing firm Ipsos, the RV Industry Association reports that RV ownership has increased by over 62% over the last two decades. Of the new RV owners, 22% were Millennials and Gen Zers. However, couples do not have to be RV owners to enjoy the

benefits of RVing. Like renting a car at a rental company, RV companies can provide rental services.

Couples who RV travel not only have many of the same featured comforts of home, but they also have freedom and control. So, whether the vehicle is a trailer, camper van, or motorcoach, many couples now having the ability to work remotely may find planning glamping getaways easier now more than ever. Additionally, couples can hit the road visiting places near or far with the added advantage of being as social or socially-distant to others as they wish. Moreover, they won’t even have to leave their family pets behind.

In a recently published feature, newlywed national gospel artist

Kierra Sheard-Kelly and her husband had their first RV trip chronicled on Essence.com (publishers of Essence magazine) while visiting a Michigan campground. The couple shared the joys of having modern conveniences, such as having a fully functional kitchen, a bedroom, and other amenities, as they shared outdoor activities that were new to both of them.

Becoming ever more popular with city dwellers, RVing is becoming a trending alternative for vacation travel, tailgating, and providing temporary lodging needs. Popular activities couples do while glamping includes taking road trips, visiting national parks, attending festivals, and even getting away from it all by boondocking.

Ten Years Together

Where does the time go?

It's been ten years since the first Detroit Wedding Day magazine was published. Much has changed during this time. However, there has been one thing that has been constant that is worth celebrating. So, on this 10th-year edition of the magazine, it is an honor to recognize The Masonic Temple and Bellissima's Bridal Salon, who have been advertising partners since the magazine's first issue.

The Masonic Temple

As a staple in Detroit, The Masonic was built in the 1920s and is the world’s largest Masonic Temple. The venue includes three theatres, a chapel, many lodge rooms, a shrine building, and two ballrooms. In total, there are 1037 rooms in this massive edifice with 16-floors stretching 210 feet in height.

Over the years, the Masonic Temple has hosted countless musicals, theatrical performances, landmark events, prominent dignitary appearances, and hundreds of weddings large and small.

Because the Masonic Temple is a popular venue, Event Manag-

er, Melanie Matics, recommends that couples make reservations between one and one-half years out from the desired date.

When speaking about the advantages of using the facility, she shared, “Couples can take

advantage of reduced priced food and beverage services during the midweek, Fridays, and Sundays. Also, there are no minimums required from January to March.“

Matics continued, “The Masonic includes floor length linen and

Like many venues, The Masonic Temple makes its client’s safety a priority.

She shared a memorable wedding that stood out in her memory.

“We had a beautiful Hindu wedding held within our facility. We accommodated their Baraat, Ceremony, Lunch, Cocktail Hour, and Dinner in all different rooms within our building. Each space had its very own unique setup and design. The ability to have everything in one location created a wonderful travel-free experience for their guests.”

Bellissima Bridal Salon

On an April spring day in 2010, the business owners of Bellissima Bridal Salon proudly opened their doors for business. Bellissima (which means beautiful in Italian) has been dressing soon-

to-be brides in their retail store located on Main Street in Rochester Hills, for over a decade.

Over the years, the salon has featured different designer gown lines, but their core line of designers includes Maggie Sottero, Sottero Midgley, Rebecca Ingram, and Martin Thornburg. Their dress sizes range from 8 to 24 in a range of styles.

"At Bellissima Bridal, we aim to create an intimate atmosphere for the bride and her guests with one-on-one attention and affordable gowns," states Julie Nikolic, Bellissima Bridal Salon's co-owner.

Nikolic shared that most brides search for their wedding dress twelve to eighteen months before their wedding day. It is not uncommon for gowns to take six to seven months to arrive after placing an order. Dress alterations may also add upwards of two months of additional time. With this in mind, brides need to schedule enough time to get their perfect dress.

When asked to share something that clients may not be aware of, she responded,

"I feel most brides do their homework prior to shopping and are pretty well informed. But I would definitely ask about dress length options. Some manufacturers offer shorter lengths for free or a nominal charge which could save money when they do alterations."

Regarding bridal styles, Nikolic noticed a recurring trend with local brides.

"We definitely see a lot more color in wedding gowns beyond just white and ivory. Blush, champagne, and lavender tones are increasingly popular. Soft, flowy romantic A-line gowns are very popular right now. Many brides opt to forgo the traditional princess look and just go with a simple veil trimmed in lace or beading," she states.

One recommendation to brides is to keep your shopping experience simple.

"When shopping, don't bring a big entourage. Although it's a fun experience, too many people can steer the appointment away from what the bride truly wants. Keep it to two or three close people. This will allow you to form your own opinion before they offer theirs."

Over the years, the team at Bellissima Bridal Salon has helped a diverse group of brides, each with their own unique wants and needs.

When reminiscing on past clients, she recalled one bride who impressed her and reminded her what an honor it is to provide customer-focused service.

"She, concluded saying, "We recently had a bride that was blind. It was a truly unique experience and was wonderful to see how she chose her dream gown through touch".

Metro Detroit Projected Wedding Expense Insights

Things sure have changed over the past three years, whether it’s hosting wedding events with face coverings or moving the wedding reception outdoors instead of having it in a ballroom. But, even with all of the changes, one thing is for sure, weddings are still taking place.

After all of the wedding postponements and change-the-date announcements, soon-to-be spouses are having their weddings on their terms. Couples are excited to get married, celebrate, and have fun.

Let’s look at some of the wedding trends observed by researchers.

In the spring of 2021, the Wedding Report conducted a study that surveyed over 2200 couples around the country. The survey concluded the average couple spent approximately $22,500 on wedding expenses.

The researchers projected that the expenses will increase in 2022 and 2023, ranging upwards of $24,300 to $24,900, bringing the spending levels closer to the pre-pandemic trends.

At the time of this publication, the study showed that couples are on track to spend a combined average of $25,570 towards their Metro Detroit area weddings.

It should come as no surprise that many of the previously postponed weddings due to the

pandemic were rescheduled for 2021 or will occur in 2022. Furthermore, many ceremonies have been scaled down to accommodate smaller gatherings.

Projected 2022 Average Spending Trend by County:

Lapeer: $26,698 Livingston: $29,831 Macomb: $27,657 Oakland: $30,652 St. Clair: $25,766 Washtenaw: $29,045 Wayne: $22,175

Now that the general expense totals have been identified, let’s take a deeper dive and look at the projected average amounts spent by category.

Please keep in mind that these are broad general projections based on sampling. Prices offered by local vendors may differ based on market demand and the vendor’s level of expertise.

Seasonality of Weddings and Length of Engagement

Based on the last reported trend, Metro Detroit couples on average are engaged for 18.2 months.

There would be nothing sadder than learning that your wedding photographs and video footage were awful due to asking an inexperienced friend or family member to take your wedding photographs or video.

Leaving such an important job to a non-professional might prove to be a big mistake. It is essential to have experienced professionals who have perfected the art in their respective professions. Knowing the best lighting, equipment, and positioning are just a few skills these pros know from years of experience.

"You're paying me to move six inches to the right”, states Angelo Simon, 30-year professional photographer, and owner of AM & FM Photography.

“ Anyone can take a picture. You're paying me to move 6 inches to the right to make that picture a great photograph", he continues.

"I think that brides and grooms should let go of the idea that an amateur or friend can take their photos instead of someone who

CAPTURE THE MOMENTS

The importance of hiring a professional photographer and videographer.

does this as a living," he continued.

Undoubtedly, digital cameras on the market produce impressive high-resolution images, but the skilled eye of a knowledgeable photographer is precious.

"It's not the camera that takes the picture. It's the photographer!" states Simon.

As part of his packages, Simon indicated that he provides the newlyweds with the digital files of their wedding, which could be upwards of 600 or more images. In addition, photos that the couples receive are edited and color corrected.

Today, Simon says a trend on the rise over the years is First-Looks.

"I did my first First-Look about ten years ago, but they are becoming more common. The couples want to go on lot of different locations. They want to go where they first met and their first walk. It’s becoming more common than not."

He has also noticed that he has been doing more photoshoots

for older couples having their second wedding.

"These are a lot more family-oriented because we now have more blended families, and they want to make sure that you capture the family," he says.

Simon, strongly recommends couples make a realistic budget to be able to afford these services. He suggests that the couple set aside one budget for the photographer and another for the videographer.

Jason Lawson, the owner of Lawson's Video Production, echoed similar sentiments.

"One of the things that couples look at is the price of the video production. Because of the cell phone, a lot of people think ‘why does it cost me so much when I can just pull out my cell phone’, but the process of the production of the video can take hours”, says Lawson.

Before there was the hint of a pandemic, Lawson had already implemented live video streaming for his wedding clients.

Lawson states, "In 2019, I start-

ed moving into streaming live videos using multiple cameras, mixing, and streaming. So, in 2020, when the wedding industry and all of world shut down, I had already been promoting live streaming. After the pandemic started, streaming was the only option."

Lawson shared that most couples opt to use traditional video production services. However, having a professionally produced live stream combines the benefits of having a quality produced video coupled with live footage of the event.

To better understand Lawson's professionally produced live stream process, one only needs to look at the television industry.

"On the day of the event, it can take hours of preparation before the event, but a lot of that work continues well after the wedding day," states Lawson.

What is involved in live stream production is using multiple video cameras with on-site mixing, editing, and polishing. Lawson also can add graphics and other media, such as supplemental video clips, into the production. The goal of the produced streamed show is to capture the moment and tell a story using sight, sound, and motion.

"To do a production, streaming is not just recording what is going

on but a full production including graphics. I understand that there is downtime during the course of a wedding day. So, I create a production that streams both the ceremony and reception."

Examples of graphics or video inclusions that may be used include photo montages and

that time? When you go to the movies, you usually get there about 10 minutes before time to get popcorn or a drink for the start of the movie. That is where my production part comes in. I produce something engaging for them to see even during the down times for the wedding."

"Think of it like as a production during a pre-game at a football game. They show the highlights of teams before the game, then there is the actual event", states Lawson.

Not only will the couple have video streaming, but after the event, he also gives them a finished video much quicker than traditional video production.

"I do the streaming, polishing, cutting, editing, and mixing right there on-site. It shortens the time. My goal is to be like the DJ at the end of the night where I can unplug and be virtually finished because I did most of the production work upfront".

previously taped stories of how the couple met.

The features of using a professionally produced streaming video help keep guests who are watching the streamed video engaged and entertained throughout.

"Not all weddings start on time. If someone has already logged in to the streaming site, what are the online guests doing during

After the wedding, the job of these skilled professionals continues well after the wedding festivities conclude. Couples who hire a professional to photograph and video their wedding get much more than a picture. They receive artistry.

Finally, Simon says, "If I could just talk to a bride and groom, I would just say, 'hire professionals'."

Jump Start Your Wedding Planning

You got engaged! Now what? Here are suggestions of what next steps to take to get ready for the big day.

Before rushing to your local retailer to make your first purchase, take a moment to collect your thoughts and make a plan. Your wedding deserves careful planning and execution.

Whether you are getting married in a cathedral or having an athome ceremony, it’s your day. So, make sure it reflects what is important to you and your partner.

After announcing your engagement to your family and close friends, the next step is to set up a realistic budget. It’s a good idea to create a budget early to make sure you can afford all of the items and services on your must-have list.

Money Talks

First, let’s look at what funds are available. Begin by determining what savings are being set aside for the wedding. Secondly, identify how much of your monthly income will be reserved for the wedding expenses. Lastly, account for monetary gifts that parents or family will contribute towards the wedding.

Once you know what resources are available, you can better determine if additional funds are needed. But most importantly, know your limits.

Vision and Style

Have a clear vision of your wedding. For example, do you want to have a formal event, or is a casual gathering more aligned with your personality?

Don’t worry if your vision is a bit vague right now. That is understandable. What’s important is to identify your expectations to begin laying the groundwork for a successful event.

Take the time to explore and use your imagination. For example, do you want a small intimate wedding or a wedding reception that is sure to be the talk of the town? On the other hand, maybe you, your significant other, and a group of friends decide to travel abroad for a destination wedding.

Wedding Planners and Coordinators

Next, you need to decide if you will coordinate your wedding yourself or hire a wedding planner. If you determine that it is best to hire a wedding professional, you will need to budget for their services. A benefit of using a professional wedding planner is that they can significantly reduce the hustle and bustle involved in coordinating a wedding.

Now, let’s take a moment to look at the different types of wedding planners. Full-service wedding planners plan your entire wedding from start to finish. This wedding planner is best

for brides who don’t want to be bothered with planning details. However, if you do not need a full-service provider, you may want to use a day-of coordinator instead.

A day-of coordinator usually offers services closer to the wedding day. This professional helps coordinate all of the activities for the wedding day, including set-up, breakdown, and other services leading up to the day.

The last type of coordinator is a venue coordinator. This person is generally part of the personnel at the venue site. They will help with the activities that will take place at the venue.

In each case, the wedding planner, day-of coordinator, or venue coordinator can help lessen the stress associated with wedding planning. Additionally, they can help identify and manage unexpected expenses. Finally, because wedding planners are familiar with common mistakes first-time brides make, these pros can help eliminate the avoidable frustrations.

Time and Place

Next on the list is to decide on a wedding date. It is understandable that when you first become engaged, you may not have an exact date selected. However, it is a good idea to pick a tentative date (or date range) to communicate more effectively with wedding vendors.

Identify where you would like your wedding ceremony and reception to take place. Once you determine the location, secure the date with the venue. If the event space does not

planning tool detroitweddingday.com 36 | DETROIT WEDDING DAY 2022

provide catering, prepare to book the services of a caterer.

It is wise to retain the officiant who will perform the ceremony when the wedding site is reserved. Keep in mind some officiants may require you and your fiancé to go through couple’s counseling weeks or months before the ceremony date.

You’re Hired!

At this time, you may want to contact your photographer, videographer, florist, and other vendors, such as wedding DJs and entertainers, to ensure that they put your wedding on their calendar.

Be aware that many wedding vendors require a down-payment to retain their services, so make sure you can afford it before agreeing to hire them.

Most importantly, make sure that you do some due diligence. Get your questions answered. This is not the time to be caught off guard.

Fashion and Jewelry

It’s time for fun. Next, plan to

visit bridal shops. You may want to complete this task twelve months (or more) from your wedding date to ensure that the perfect dress is available in time for your wedding date.

Let’s not forget about the groom. Now is a perfect time to place orders for fashion accessories that coordinate with the bridal party.

If you haven’t purchased your wedding rings, this is the time to complete that task. Many brides visit jewelers six to nine months out from their wedding day.

You’re Invited

It would be best if you began to mail wedding engagement save-the-date announcements four to six months before the wedding. However, it would be best if you plan to mail out the formal wedding invitations approximately two months before the wedding date.

During this time, begin to invite friends and family to be members of your wedding party. Once your wedding party is complete, select the dresses and tuxedos for the bridesmaids and

Book It

Let’s talk rentals. Will you need to rent high-end china, tables, arches, throne chairs, or other decorative pieces? If so, you will want to book these items well in advance. Don’t wait until the last minute.

Please don’t make the mistake of overlooking transportation. If renting a vehicle is on your to-do list, make sure to reserve it in advance to increase your chances of getting the make, model, and color that you want.

Of course, don’t forget about the wedding registry also. Gift registries not only encourage guests to purchase the gifts that you really want, but it also helps reduce the chance of receiving duplicate gifts.

As your wedding date nears, other important details will need to be completed. Use the handy wedding checklist in this magazine to help with your wedding planning efforts. You can also visit detroitweddingday. com to access other helpful wedding planning tools.

Wedding Flower INSPIRATION

The perfect wedding flower decore that goes beyond the bouquet..

No wedding would be complete without the bridal bouquet and beautiful wedding flowers. They delight our senses of touch, smell, and sight while also helping create an event style.

There are many ways to include florals and greenery into your wedding day, and it doesn’t stop with the floral bouquet. Actually, the bouquet is only the beginning. From beautiful floral aisle adornments and arrangements to one-of-a-kind boutonniere and statement pieces, adding flowers and greenery introduces texture and color.

Popular flowers and greenery commonly used in wedding decor and bouquets include:

Calla Lilies

Carnations

Lily of the Valley

Orchids

We asked Jon Gerych, an esteemed creative director and owner of Gerych’s, a floral and event design company based in Fenton, Michigan, his favorite ways to use flowers and greenery in wedding décor.

“Our favorite uses for flowers and greenery are unique designs on ceremony arches, ceiling treatments, statement pieces at guest entrances, and gorgeous pieces that highlight the bars,” replied Gerych in a statement.

He and his team were generous to share some of their beautiful

inspirational designs.

Gerych’s began more than 50 years ago as a florist and greenhouse serving the Fenton community. Since taking over the business from his father, Jon has transformed Gerych’s into a full-service event design and rental company.

Jon and the Gerych team have gained notoriety by producing some of the largest weddings in Metro Detroit.

These dynamic businesswomen, who lovingly market their collaborative group as The Real Wedding Planners of Detroit, share their wedding planning and design tips and insights.

Building an exemplary vendor network

There is a process to finding the perfect vendor. Pilar Doakes of Four Seasons Events shares the importance of asking the right questions to match engaged couples with the perfect vendor.

One of the first things I consider when I begin the vendor selection (or suggestion) process is determining what type of wedding I'm planning.

All weddings, whether they have a clearly defined "theme" or not, should have an overall esthetic. Esthetic is basically a way to describe the look and feel of the event. It speaks to the emotion you want to be conveyed when your guests enter the space. For example, it could be whimsical with an airy feel, which would call for pas-

tel colors and flowy fabrics. In contrast, another wedding could be described as modern chic, which would likely have monochromatic colors, clean lines, and symmetrically designed decor. Several things clients can do are put together inspiration pictures and make Pinterest boards. If you are a more visual person, you could print out items, get color swatches, or put together a binder to have everything in one place.

Looking for vendors to suit each

detroitweddingday.com 56 | DETROIT WEDDING DAY 2022

type of wedding is a matter of understanding both your client's desires and the community of vendors you are connected to. Expert planners are well versed in matching clients to the vendor that can best translate their décor expectations. This knowledge comes from a few different things including, consultations, requesting renderings and mockups, visiting and looking through samples of linens and other items, looking through pictures of previous work, and of course, time.

The more experienced and educated your wedding planner is, the better they can successfully select the right vendor for the job. Navigating through that selection process and then putting all the details together is a fulfilling experience. Seeing the work put into planning come to fruition with the completed production is worth the hard work.

If you're currently planning your wedding, congratulations and happy planning! Understanding your client

Identifying client expectation is essential when wedding planners work with clients. It all begins with understanding the client. Brandi Peart of B Posh Events shares insight that’s some couples may not have considered.

Most couples often look at a consultation as a way to interview the planner to see if they are a good fit. What most

clients don't realize is that the wedding planner is also looking to see if the couple is a good fit as clients.

One of the most important things we like to do is get to know our couple and try to understand their wedding planning goals. I ask them a series of questions like how they met, what they like to do for fun, their occupations/careers, family dynamics, how they got engaged, and their concerns or needs with wedding planning.

I then move on to asking them about their personal style and budget goals for their wedding. This gives me an idea of the esthetic or feel they may lean towards when selecting wedding decor and vendors. This also helps me understand their wedding value or level of investment they are willing to contribute toward their big day.

Most importantly, we have to make sure the couples align with our personality and planning style. We break down our communication style and planning process. It's very important for us to be in alignment with our couples because it's important that they trust our professional guidance. This helps the wedding planning journey be an amazing experience for all involved.

Add WOW to your wedding

So, what stops a bride or groom in

wedding planning

their tracks to say wow? A room transformed. Meisha Pigford of Dream Celebrations shares a cleverly enriched illustration that points out décor and design techniques that changes a room from bland to grand.

There’s a difference between (smile) “Aww, that’s nice” and (eyes bucked, jaw-dropping) “WOW!!”. And I prefer the latter.

Imagine for a moment you walking into your reception to do the room reveal for the very first time. You see the flickering lights of the candles glistening. You can smell the scent of fresh florals.

You notice the variation of centerpieces. That keeps you excited as you walk around the room, going from table to table, saying, “Oh! honey, look” to your new spouse.

The tablecloths are draping the floor. They have the perfect amount of color and detail, which compliments the surrounding elements such as the glass chargers, acrylic menus, and custom table numbers. As you look around, you notice the head table and your family tables don’t have tablecloths. But then you realize they didn’t need to be covered because they are high-end distinguished estate tables reserved for the most important people in your life.

As you take a final look at your room before your guests walk in,

detroitweddingday.com DETROIT WEDDING DAY 2022 | 57

you notice the beautifully pleated flowing drapery covering all four walls. You then say to yourself, this room is unrecognizable. It doesn’t look like the same room. Actually, it doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen before. Suddenly, your heart skips a beat when you notice an unexpected décor element and you are elated that it is in your room.

Then you take a deep breath and give a sigh of satisfaction that your wedding design is more than you imagined. You leave the room with your spouse grinning ear to ear as you head to take photos with your bridal party and close relatives.

What makes something over the top or makes someone say wow is the emotional journey you take them through. Enticing all five senses unexpectedly and simultaneously is sure to give a wow factor.

Renewals & Encore Weddings

First weddings, vow renewals and second weddings at first may appear to be essentially the same, but are they? Lorri Lewis, of The DirectHer explores renewal and encore weddings while answering a few important questions.

What surprising trends have you noticed in your industry?

renewal. So, what is my answer? Any year is a milestone! What most couples are doing is to plan the wedding of their dreams as their vow renewal. Often when the couple originally got married, they may not have had the finances, were younger, already had small children, or something else that just deterred them from having the lavish celebration they desired.

Is a vow renewal any different than a wedding?

Not really. One missing part is there's no signing of a marriage license. Also, there are absolutely no limitations when it comes to vow renewals. If the couple has the budget and the vision, we will make it happen. Couples aren't limited to inviting a certain number of guests. It's all dependent on their budget. I've coordinated 50-guests at a vow renewal to 250-guests.

Even when it comes to the couple's attire, it's okay to wear something similar to the first wedding's wardrobe or something completely different. It's a personal choice. For example, some couples wear an off-white or champagne, but others wear the traditional wedding white. It all depends on your style and vision.

should not and doesn't have to reflect the first time. Consider the following suggestions when planning an encore celebration:

First, don't plan to budget the same amount of money you did for the first wedding. Let's face it; times have changed. What you spent five to ten years ago is not what things cost today. So, be realistic with your funds.

Next, don't feel like you need a large bridal party. Do all eight to ten of your BFF's need to be bridesmaids and groomsmen? If you both have children, why not include them as part of the ceremony as witnesses?

Finally, be intentional with your guest list. Do you really need (or want) that many people to feed? Keep in mind that 85% of your budget is for food! Double-check that list and purge who you haven't seen in over a year or more.

Adult-Only Weddings

Adult-only Weddings. What is it, and is it for you? Crystal Marie Young, of Crystal Marie Events explains why some couples decide to have a unique type of adult-only wedding.

What is an elevated wedding?

Vow

renewals are on the rise. Many may question what anniversary milestone should be used when considering a vow

Can you give insight on planning a second marriage?

Plan it like it's your first time because it is! The second marriage

The elevated weddings concept is a fresh, new idea that made me fall deeper in love with event planning. Cannabis-friendly weddings and events have been around on the West coast for quite a while. I wanted to bring some of that West coast energy to the Midwest, especially

detroitweddingday.com 58 | DETROIT WEDDING DAY 2022
wedding planning

since recreational cannabis use is now legal in Michigan.

Since cannabis-friendly weddings aren’t widely planned it lends themselves to more creativity and personal touches. In most cases, the client’s inspiration for what their wedding might be based on what their parents or a friend’s wedding looked like. There aren’t nearly as many exemplars for what an elevated wedding experience can be. Rather than be pressured into incorporating the traditional tablescapes, ambiance, and trappings they’ve always seen, clients are able to curate an experience that’s more reflective of their personal style.

Why should someone consider this type of wedding?

Have you ever been to a wedding where there are a lot of kids in attendance? Weddings tend to be catered for the tastes of adult guests, rather than seeking to capture the attention of younger guests. After a while, children get restless or feel like they’re being ignored because the focus of the day isn’t on them. I see more and more clients moving to adults-only events for these reasons.

How is planning an elevated or adult-only wedding different from planning a traditional wedding?

Elevated weddings definitely require a bit more creativity

and collaboration with specialty vendors such as Dispensaries, Budtenders, or other vendors. You also have to consider if the venue permits smoking and where those designated smoking sections are located.

How do you incorporate cannabis into a wedding without turning the event into a hotbox?

One way to elevate the sophistication of cannabis that doesn’t require smoke at all, is to infuse the food, desserts, or beverages. If your venue does permit smoking, especially in outdoor spaces, you could create a designated section to indulge, much like you would if you were having an event with a cigar bar.

Tips for having a fun and engaging wedding.

When guests talk about how much fun they had at a wedding months after the event, it is wise to learn from the wedding planner. Lorna Marshall of Posh & Prim shares tips on making a wedding day memorable.

First-looks

If you are open to having something non-traditional, include a

first look. The first look is when the couple has an intimate moment before the ceremony. It's just them and the photographer.

First looks let the couple have some private moments together because they won't have any alone time until after the wedding. Also, this is an excellent time for the couple to exchange personal gifts, read love notes to each other, or even have a prayer together.

Capture the moment

Take photos with your bridal party before the ceremony begins while everyone is smiling and their makeup is fresh. This is handled the same way as an after-the-ceremony photo shoot, but your bridal party won't be anxious, tired, or have sore, achy feet. Moreover, this lets the newlyweds take part in the cocktail hour.

Cocktails

Speaking of cocktail hours, it's imperative to have one. Without

detroitweddingday.com DETROIT WEDDING DAY 2022 | 59 wedding planning

a cocktail hour, what are the guests doing while waiting for the reception to begin? A lot of money has been invested in photographers and videographers to get those memorable images, but you also have to consider your guests. Therefore, have a signature drink, some beer, wine, cocktails, and appetizers available, so guests are not sitting there hangry (hungry and angry) asking when the bride and groom will get here?

Entertainment

Create an event that leaves your guests saying, "aww, this wedding was awesome. I will never forget it". Create memorable events by providing great entertainment. For instance, during the cocktail hour, have a 360-degree photo booth, vignette (which will make a beautiful setting for group photos), aerialist, or caricature artist as engaging activities.

Add a pianist or live band to keep guests engaged and moving to the beat. Additionally, consider adding a DJ to help create another type of atmosphere for the event.

Transportation

If you really want to impress outof-town guests provide a motor coach to transport them from the hotel to the wedding site. They will appreciate knowing that they won’t have to rent a vehicle or arrange for an Uber or Lyft.

Finally, you don't want your guests going back home saying it was just a typical wedding with traditional food. So, make sure to have great food. It's essential to pick great menu items.

Add fun and excitement to a wedding from the ceremony to reception

What do donuts, Gelato, and animals have to do with a wedding? No, it’s not a riddle, but it can liven up any event.

Brandy Lane of WillUParty Event Planning shares creative ways to add excitement to any weddings.

Do you want your wedding to be memorable and different? Then do something out of the norm. My friend had a camel at his wedding and of course it went viral. It does not have to be that grand, but there are less costly things you can do. Start by doing something non-traditional.

Have Dinner First Serve dinner to your guests as soon as they arrive. The guests will enjoy eating and chatting with you before the big I Do’s. A gourmet meal in a box from a food truck also works well before the ceremony. Having dinner before the ceremony gives the wedding party and newlyweds a chance to eat early, so no one is hungry.

Ditch Traditional Wedding Cakes

Excite guests with on-site freshly filled cannoli paired with delicious toppings. Serve donuts to guests but avoid using a donut wall. Instead consider offering tabletop fried donuts. Some companies offer this service and even place donuts in cute wedding-fa-

vor bags for guests. Gelato Bars are another guest favorite. Gelato is similar to ice cream; however, it is full of flavor, less messy, and typically has fewer calories. It can also be added to your favorite liquors to create a custom drink.

Split Up the Ceremony

Okay, split ups typically aren’t discussed at weddings; however, this is a good one. Split the ceremony space in half according to selected colors and let the guests choose what side they want to sit on. For example, one side could be red and the other side white. When guests pick a colored side, they are served beverages and small plated foods of the same color. It is fun to watch which side the guest decides to sit on.

Start Early and Party Late. There is nothing like a brunch wedding. Brunch food items cover many dietary restrictions. Also, since guests love sampling various foods and watching a chef cook it up, an action station is an excellent addition for the event. Some good action stations to consider are flapjacks on the grill, omelet stations, grilled steak, or fresh fried fish.

Finally, starting the event early allows you to party, take pictures, rest a little, and head out for the evening to party some more. After all, remember your wedding day is not all about you. So, make sure you have your favorite things, but also recognize it is also about the guest’s experience.

Wedding Planning Preparedness

Ways

Even when taking precautions, couples may not expect the unexpected when wedding planning. For this reason, pre-planning for mishaps can help avoid extra expenses.

Here are some precautions to consider to help reduce anxiety and maintain calm while arranging a wedding.

Plans for Inclement Weather

Rihanna said it best in a line from her hit song "Umbrella" that says, "In anticipation for precipitation, stack chips for the rainy day." Having an alternate plan is essential if wedding festivities include being outside. Don't let a sudden rain downpour damper the occasion. Plan for it!

Having an inclement weather plan can help gain some control over the uncontrollable. Talk about a backup plan with the wedding coordinator and venue managers in case of poor weather conditions. Likewise, ensure that somebody has an umbrella accessible if necessary.

Stand Guard

Many couples use gift boxes during their reception. It is customary for guests to deposit heart-warming congratulatory cards loaded with cash and gift cards into the wedding card boxes or placed on gift tables. Don't be caught off guard but instead, have a guard. Consider designating a trustworthy person to be responsible for monitoring your gift table. Taking this precaution will help assure everything remains where it ought to be.

Moreover, designate someone in your wedding squad to help direct guests and answer general questions to keep everyone moving in the right direction during the event.

COVID Safety Protocols

It's wise to ask what safety guidelines the wedding vendors are following. With COVID still being on everyone's mind, being proactive and knowing what restrictions or safety measures are required ahead of time can help manage everyone's expectations.

If your venue does not already have sanitation stations set up, you may want to make arrangements for bottles of hand sanitizer and napkins to be available for guests' use.

Please Don't Bug Me!

Those troublesome insects don't have to ruin an outdoor event. Try placing natural bug repellents around gathering spaces to drive away these uninvited

guests. Ward off bugs by adding a few drops of essential oils such as lemon, peppermint oil, and lavender. Of course, burning citronella oils and candles can help as well. Moreover, placing eucalyptus sprigs and herbs such as rosemary, clove, and thyme are repellents as well.

A final alternative is to hire an exterminator to spray the area days before the event, which will surely do the trick.

Comfortable and Cozy

Taking a few extra steps to help attendees feel comfortable can also avert grumblings guests. For example, consider passing out hand-fans for guests to use during hotter months.

It helps guests, both young and old, quickly cool down during those sudden hot flash moments. If inscribed with the newlywed's name, wedding date, and photographs, these fans can also be keepsakes.

For open-air weddings during cooler months, keep guests warm by using outdoor heaters making sure to avoid overhanging tree branches or awnings.

Along these lines, have warm and cold drinks readily accessible to guests. There is nothing worse than being parched while waiting for the wedding reception to begin.

Communication is Vital

Sometimes, the simplest thing makes all the difference. So, when planning, make sure to inform guests of important details. Obviously, the wedding invita-

pre-planning

tion or website provides essential information, but it should also include other relevant information. For instance, if the wedding is held at a venue with both outside and inside gathering space, inform guests where the event's activities will occur. Sharing this little bit of information can permit guests to plan to wear a wardrobe that is more in accord with the event's activities. Guests will appreciate it!

Remove the mystery maze by having good signage at the event. Taking these small steps help guests navigate through the venue in confidence.

Having great signage will be appreciated, especially at larger event spaces.

Get It Insured

Sometimes the unimaginable happens. The venue unexpectedly closes without notice.

The wedding dress is damaged beyond repair days before the wedding. The wedding ring slips out of the best man's pocket and falls into the street curb drain.

Albeit, this might be a bit dramatic, sometimes the unimaginable does happen. Unfortunately, this can cause hundreds or even thousands in unexpected expenses.

One way to help decrease the financial sting of these types of misfortunes is by purchasing wedding insurance.

Wedding insurance helps couples protect their investment

from liability such as property damage, injuries, and more.

Stay Plugged In

Keep the lines of communications open with wedding vendors. For instance, if a vendor needs special accommodations for the day, make sure the venue knows this well ahead of time to make arrangements. Arm your wedding vendors and team with essential information to help the event flow well.

As the adage goes, an ounce of prevention (or precaution) is worth a pound of cure. So, take steps today to ensure that your wedding day goes off without a hitch.
