Dear Chowan University Community and Friends,
It is with deep gratitude and excitement that I address you in this special edition of The Chowanoka, celebrating a very special time and moment in our university’s history— the first year and inauguration of the first female president of Chowan University. This leadership transition is not just a reflection of my personal journey, but a testament to the resilience, faith, and spirit that define our beloved institution.
Throughout the past year, our campus has been overflowing with positive energy, anticipation, and a renewed sense of purpose. The inauguration festivities provided an opportunity for us to come together as a community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Chowan—to celebrate shared values and look ahead to the future we are building together. It is an honor to be part of such a vibrant, caring, and faith-driven family, and I am deeply moved by the warm welcome and support I have received.
That moment and this year mark a new chapter for Chowan University, where we stand firmly on the foundation of our rich history while embracing innovation and growth. Our commitment to faith, family, and future remains at the heart of all we do. As we continue to define this journey together, my vision is to further enrich the student experience and deepen our impact within the community and beyond.
As we celebrate this milestone, I am reminded that we are undeniably stronger together. I am grateful for the support of our Board of Trustees, our talented faculty and staff, our loyal alumni, friends and partners who believe in Chowan’s mission. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our students and the world they will impact.
Thank you for being a part of this remarkable adventure. May we continue to move forward with courage, faith, and a shared vision for all that Chowan University is destined to become.
All the best,
Rosemary M. Thomas, Ed. D. President, Chowan University

Thomas.
An inauguration represents the beauty of new beginnings, a glimmer of all things hopeful. An inauguration serves as a brief rest from the tasks of leading to relish the beauty of how sheer diligence has turned into dreams realized. Most importantly today is a day of celebration. It is a celebration that is likened to a baptism of sorts. As Christians we understand that baptismals propel us into a community greater than each one of us.
Today at your inauguration, Dr. Thomas, I pray that this ceremonial baptism propels you into the waiting arms of this Chowan University community. It is a community that welcomes you with open arms, open minds, and open hearts. This community shares with you a promise to rise when you rise, to lean in when you lean in, to dance when you dance, to grieve when you grieve, to grapple when you grapple, and without hesitation, to follow where you lead.
Let the stars of the universe be your guide, not the seas that crash your starboard bow.
Let the winds of progress fill your sails, and may you rest when it is still. Always remember to search the horizon for the warmth of the sun and take refuge in the islands of hope.
Lead well, Dr. Thomas. We will follow.

Chowan University proudly welcomed its 24th President, Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas, with a captivating musical event night organized by the International Student Club. The evening showcased the remarkable talents of Chowan’s students, who mesmerized the audience with their guitar, piano, and vocal performances. Held in the Chowan Chapel, the event not only highlighted the students’ exceptional abilities but also served as a warm welcome to Dr. Thomas as she settled in on campus.
The International Student Club, known for fostering cultural exchange and unity, orchestrated an unforgettable evening that perfectly captured the essence of Chowan University’s vibrant community. The event was a testament to the university’s commitment to providing a nurturing environment where students from all backgrounds can thrive academically and artistically.
Dr. Rosemary Thomas expressed her appreciation to the students, stating, “I am grateful to you, and for you, for blessing me with your gifts here this evening…I am just overcome with joy and overcome with gratitude.” As the newly appointed President, Dr. Thomas’ presence at the event symbolized her dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus culture. Joining her at the event
were Mrs. Austine Evans, Chair of the Board of Trustees, as well as representatives of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, of which Dr. Thomas has proudly been a member for more than 30 years.
With students from over 31 countries, Chowan University takes immense pride in its diverse student body, representing various cultures and backgrounds. The musical event not only showcased the students’ talents but also celebrated the university’s commitment to embracing diversity and promoting cultural understanding.
The International Student Club’s initiative to organize such an event was a demonstration of their dedication to creating a welcoming environment. This early global connection led to a very special addition to the Presidential Inauguration and subsequent recognition of Chowan’s international student population and engagement. Chowan looks forward to the tenure of Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas as the 24th President, confident that her leadership will continue to enhance the university’s commitment to academic excellence, cultural diversity, and student success.
In a special called meeting of the Chowan University Board of Trustees, on December 18, 2023 the Presidential Search Committee, chaired by Jane Burke, presented the committee’s recommended presidential candidate to the full Board of Trustees.
In a unanimous vote, Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas was selected as the 24th — and first female — president in the University’s 175-year history. Dr. Thomas took office on March 11, 2024.
“After a national search, the presidential search committee was excited to have a pool of candidates with outstanding experience and leadership expertise,” shared Jane Burke, Search Committee Chair and Board of Trustee Member. “Dr. Thomas’ leadership success in small universities similar to Chowan will be an asset as she navigates the challenges all small private universities across the country are currently facing. She is focused on the success and overall well-being of students, faculty, staff and the overall success of Chowan University. Her ability and desire to be involved in and unite the Chowan family, including the community, will be a tremendous asset to Chowan’s future success. I am excited to see Chowan’s growth under Dr. Thomas’ leadership.”
Dr. Thomas brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as the Executive Vice President at Davis & Elkins College. In that position, she was responsible for enrollment management, marketing and communications, oversight of the dean of student life, dining services, compliance, and special assignments from the president. She also served as Acting Director of Athletics and led the COVID-19 Task Force.
CHOWAN UNIVERSITY HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE FOR 175 YEARS. IT HAS TAKEN DIFFERENT SHAPES, IT HAS TAKEN DIFFERENT SIZES; IT HAS TAKEN DIFFERENT APPROACHES – AND, DARE I SAY, IN MANY WAYS, WHAT I HEAR TODAY, WHAT I HAVE BEEN READING, AND WHAT I FEEL IS THAT WE ARE JUST GETTING STARTED.
-ROSEMARY M. THOMAS
Her first assignment at Davis & Elkins College began in 2017 when she was hired as the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Institutional Advancement. Most notably, during that tenure, she successfully implemented a campus-wide retention initiative and was vital in completing a $100M fundraising campaign.
“The opportunity to serve Chowan University is indeed an honor and a privilege,” shared Dr. Thomas. “I see the future of this institution as being very bright and transformative for the students as well as the greater community. Successful higher education institutions of today require unprecedented dedication, collaboration, vision, and courage. I have seen first-hand all of these attributes and many more in the faculty and staff of this celebrated Christian university. I look forward to getting to know and working with all members of the Chowan family as we strive for continued success and enhanced opportunities for all stakeholders.”
Prior to her time at Davis & Elkins College, Dr. Thomas held various leadership positions at institutions such as Frostburg State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Salisbury University, and Glenville State College. She served as Chief Operating Officer for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in Washington, DC. Her extensive background in university and foundation management has equipped her with the leadership skills that are essential to leading Chowan University into the future.
Dr. Thomas is also deeply committed to community service and volunteerism. She served as president of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Elkins, director of American Legion Auxiliary WV Rhododendron Girls State, and president of the Community Care of West Virginia board of directors, to name a few. Her dedication to these organizations reflects her passion for making a positive impact in the communities she serves.
As a nationally recognized speaker and workshop leader, Dr. Thomas has shared her expertise on board relations, volunteer management, fundraising, and marketing strategies. Her focus on leadership development has been instrumental in shaping the lives of leaders from all walks of life.
Dr. Thomas is a proud native of Fairmont, West Virginia. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communications from Clemson University, a Master of Public Administration from the University of South Carolina, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from West Virginia University. She has also completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University.
The appointment of Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas as the 24th president of Chowan University marks a historic milestone for the institution. Her exceptional qualifications, dedication to community service, and proven leadership abilities make her the ideal candidate to lead Chowan University into its next chapter of experimental learning built on the foundation of Christian education, to which she is deeply committed.

Dr. Rosemary Thomas was recently featured in the 2024 Wonder Women edition of West Virginia Living Magazine in which she is honored for her work on behalf of Girls State. Wonder Woman has superpowers and when asked to reveal her superpower, Rosemary went quickly to Team Building! Dr. Thomas is skilled at empowering those with whom she works, as well as those with whom she volunteers. She gathers them together to work on behalf of a cause. She believes in people, loves them and brings out their best attributes. It’s definitely a skill to be envied. “It was the people Thomas has had on ‘her team’ over the years - mentors, family, friends, and colleagues - who helped her find her place in life, and many of those relationships have stemmed from her time at Rhododendron Girls State” (WV Living Magazine).
When I was five, I was named VFW Buddy Poppy Queen. I raised the most money standing out in front of the stores selling poppies, so I got to be the Poppy Queen. Throughout that year I traveled the state and went to many veterans and patriotic functions. (The red poppy represents the blood shed by American Service members. It reiterates the VFW will not forget their sacrifices.) On Memorial Day, Governor Moore and I went to West Virginia National Cemetery and as we were walking up to place the wreath, he whispered to me that we were going to face the monument, place the wreath
This recognition is particularly awesome due to the fact that she no longer lives in West Virginia; they still want to claim her!
Even as the youngest child in a gathering of youth - cousins, friends, classmates, she gave direction, maybe in a variety show, or simply a game. She organized all involved, and empowered them to do their best. Dr. Thomas’ biological father, Sam Ellis, often comments that “everybody works for Rosie.” Even then she could gather people together and give direction, while empowering all to feel their worth, to know of her love. One of her favorite quotes is by Amanda Katherine Loy, “Find your tribe and love them hard.” In the words of our WW, build your team and support them strong!
and then turn around and say a prayer. Small, red-headed child and stately, debonaire, war hero governor placed the wreath together and turned around, just as planned, until I saw a microphone. I reached for it before Governor Moore had a chance to clarify his plan. I said, “Let us pray.” The crowd bowed their heads and I used my words to offer a prayer for our veterans. This was most likely the beginning of my comfortability with public speaking. (The late Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr. was the father of United States Senator Shelley Moore Capito)
At the heart of every vibrant community is someone who inspires, encourages, and uplifts. For our campus, that someone is Rosemary Thomas. With her unstoppable energy, unwavering positivity, and love for life’s little moments, she transforms every interaction into an unforgettable experience. Enjoy her ‘Rosemaryisms,’ a collection of values, habits, and stories that define her approach to life.
Rosemary is already a bit of a campus icon, known for her unmistakable presence and enthusiasm. Whether she’s zipping around in her trusty golf cart, cheering on students from the sidelines, or attending Wednesday Night Worship, her energy is infectious. Students love her spontaneous spirit. With her West Virginia roots grounding her, Rosemary always reminds everyone of the importance of staying connected to where they come from but also planting themselves where they are.
For Rosemary, giving back is not just a hobby— it is her lifeblood. From organizing community service projects to hosting events like the Freshmen and Faculty Social or RAs for dinner, she creates opportunities for connection and growth. During Welcome Week, her Parent Reception was a highlight for families from
Ask anyone, and they’ll tell you: Rosemary has a knack for making every day special. As a self-proclaimed year-round shopper, she loves finding the perfect gift for others. When she’s not on the go, you might find her binge-watching her favorite shows on Netflix or enjoying a Broadway musical. And let’s not forget her food philosophy—pizza is more than a meal; it’s a lifestyle! But what really sets her apart is her passion for motivational speaking and her deep love of inspiring quotes.
Positivity isn’t just an attitude for Rosemary— it’s a way of life. Inspired by the philosophy of A Complaint-Free World, and one of her favorite authors Will Bowen, she challenges everyone she meets to find joy and gratitude in every moment. ‘It’s easy to complain,’ she says, ‘but choosing positivity? That’s where the magic happens.’ This mantra shapes her teaching, her leadership, and her gift for bringing people together.
This story is a cornerstone of Rosemary’s message: no matter how daunting the challenge, one action can inspire a movement. One act of kindness can change a life.
One day a man was walking along the beach in the early morning and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up onto the shore. Now the tide was going out and the sun was coming up.
Ahead, he spotted a young woman gathering up the starfish, then one by one tossing them back into the ocean. He approached her and asked why she spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time.
The young woman replied, “The starfish cannot live if they are left out in the sun.”
Then the man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But there must be thousands of miles of beaches and countless starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What possible difference is throwing back a few going to make anyway?”
The young woman bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she turned, smiled, and said, “It made a difference to that one!”
Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas made history as the first woman to serve as President of Chowan University, joining strong women pursuing dreams in leadership. The establishment of a scholarship in her name reflects both her success and her family’s dedication to supporting young women in their academic journeys. Mary Jo Thomas, the mother of President Thomas, along with family and friends, announced the establishment of a scholarship in honor of Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas.
The Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas Endowed Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to deserving female students who are committed to advancing their education at Chowan. It serves not only as a tribute to Rosemary’s accomplishments but as a way to inspire and empower the next generation of women leaders.
“My brother and I were both scholarship recipients,” Mary Jo Thomas shared. “We think that it’s very important to pay things forward. Someone did that for us – we appreciate it greatly and hope to be able to do that with this scholarship.”
The creation of this scholarship is particularly significant given Chowan University’s roots. Originally founded in 1848 as a women’s college, Chowan has a proud legacy of offering accessible education to women and fostering a community of inclusivity and support. With this new scholarship, the university continues to build on its tradition of educational excellence.
The Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas Scholarship is more than just financial assistance – it is an investment in the future of young women who will go on to make a difference in their communities, industries, and beyond, honoring Dr. Thomas’ vision of faith, family and future.
Dr. Thomas was formally invested as the 24th and first female President of Chowan University at 2:22 on Friday, October 18, 2024 by Mrs. Austine Evans, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “This investiture serves as a formal and public recognition of the trust the Board of Trustees, our university community and all those who hold Chowan close to their hearts have placed in you. It is the commitment on your part to serve, to lead with integrity and to guide this institution toward a future marked by growth, academic excellence and a steadfast commitment to our mission. With this investiture you are entrusted with the responsibility to champion our values, to embody our dedication to student success and to uphold the traditions that make Chowan University unique.”
Dr. Thomas is well qualified for Chowan University’s presidential position. She has extensive leadership experience with the last serving as Executive Vice President, Acting Director of Athletics and Vice President for Enrollment through a 7 year time period at Davis & Elkins College. Thomas is devoted to volunteer work and has shared her skills in numerous capacities, most recently as Director of Rhododendron Girls State and Leadership Chairman for the American Legion Auxiliary Department of WV. She earned her Doctorate of Education at West Virginia University with post doctoral studies at Harvard Graduate School of Education.
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." -Jeremiah 29:11
I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT I SEE YOU, I HEAR YOU. I AM LEARNING FROM YOU, I BELIEVE IN YOU. I AM LEADING WITH YOU IN MIND AND TOGETHER WE CAN, AND WE WILL PROSPER!
Most importantly, Dr. Rosemary Thomas is a visionary, faith based leader. Friday, October 18th was a day of prayer, a day of celebration and a day of joy, beginning with a morning church service held in the Chowan Chapel, thanking God for grace and His gift of Dr. Thomas. President Chris Wood, of Davis & Elkins College and a mentor of Dr. Thomas, reminded those attending that leaders within the Christian faith are servants and are “touched and called by God’s Spirit.”
Former first lady Carol Taylor quoted Jeremiah 29: 11-14 (International Version) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you.” Taylor reminded the congregation that they should reflect on answered prayers that have come their way and remember that God is at work in their lives, “always answering, always guiding, always finding solutions.”
A blue band with “Plans to Prosper” can be seen on the wrists of the entire Chowan community, a gift from Dr. Rosemary M. Thomas on her inauguration day. “I invite you to wear this wristband knowing you are in an institution that is in Christ and has plans to prosper.”
Dr. Thomas is an answer and solution to Chowan’s prayers as she makes plans for Chowan University to prosper. Dr. Gary A. Ransdell, President Emeritus, Western Kentucky University, said “Rosemary, this job, right now, right here has been your destiny, your professional goal, your lifetime ambition. You’ve worked hard to get here, you’ve earned it and Chowan University will be the beneficiary of that work, those life lessons and of your story. I know you will lead well.
I know Chowan will grow and prosper.” He continued to share with the audience his knowledge of Dr. Thomas' ability to inspire those around her to achieve goals that stir people and stretch their abilities. Chowan University is seeing this on a daily basis.
Chowan is prospering! Dr. Thomas spoke of her plans to prosper taking shape more than six months ago as she realized the commitment found across the campus and throughout Murfreesboro, Hertford County and the region. The plans grew as the Board of Trustees, faculty and leadership team moved forward with the pivotal curriculum and schedule change focusing on imparting knowledge as well as focusing on practical life and professional skills. The plans continued to grow with the enhancement of religious life and campus ministry.
The plans grew even more as a generous donor stepped forward to engage an architectural firm to help develop a master plan for Chowan University. Dr. Thomas asked, “Is it a master plan, or is it our Master’s plan for us? Our master plan is not just about bricks and mortar. It is about changing the look, feel, and future of this campus with attention given to facility usage, branding efforts, engagement levels and community building. All of which are as important as can be at a time such as this. In any event, just last week we had a challenge presented to us. A challenge to raise $50,000 to launch this masterplan. A friend of the university pledged $5,000 and asked others to join him to reach $50,000. Thanks to board members, friends and campus leaders, we have reached $70,000 as of this moment.”
One donor said it this way, “We need to get behind this so people know our future is bright and we plan to prosper." That certainly has a nice ring to it, ‘plans to prosper’ and this is only the beginning.
I INVITE YOU TO WEAR THAT WRISTBAND KNOWING THAT YOU ARE PART OF AN INSTITUTION THAT IS IN CHRIST AND HAS PLANS TO PROSPER.
Apowerhouse, full of happiness, joy and determination. Rosemary Thomas radiates energy and vitality. Some say she is “a lot”, but in a positive way, with a smile and hopeful voice; most say she is exactly what is needed here and now - visionary, transformative, charismatic, motivational, peaceful, eloquent and bold are all descriptives given to the 24th President of Chowan University. She is the first woman to hold this prestigious position. Her mantra is immersed in messages surrounding faith, family and future. Chowan’s future, with the leadership of Dr. Thomas, is built on a strong foundation of academic excellence and practical experience, and according to Dr. Thomas, it is “augmented by each and every smile and hug”.
Dr. Thomas was raised by Ad and Mary Jo Thomas as an only child but was never alone because her family was always there for her; aunts and uncles, cousins and extended chosen family loved her through every step of her journey. She commends her mother for having excellent taste in men. Her biological father, Sam Ellis, and the Ellis family are very important to her. But her opportunity to call Ad Thomas “Dad”, was truly a gift. Dr. Thomas’ parents were dedicated civil servants with her father serving in the Governor’s Cabinet and her mother a political appointee in West Virginia. She was brought up knowing the importance of a positive attitude and an incredible work ethic. So, it comes as no surprise that she was an activist on many fronts barely out of the womb. Rosemary was raised in a house across the street from her elementary school. Early on she knew that one should work for what is needed: Here she is, only in second grade petitioning for an additional crosswalk, necessary for her to safely get to school. In third grade she decided her school needed a newspaper; not only did she write the paper full of important children’s news, but she insisted it be printed and distributed to her young classmates. A civic minded, compelling child in elementary school prevailed when she staged a protest against the school cooks because they were unkind to some of her classmates, not her, but she was a fighter for fairness and kindness. It’s not a surprise that she was frequently in Principal Fantasia’s office…and yes, that was actually his name.
We are thankful for the child who fought injustices, creating a mindset leading to adulthood allowing Dr. Thomas to become the Wonder Woman of Chowan University, making magic happen where bigger issues prevail. Her mother asked how she felt about embarking on this undertaking. She said, “It feels like this is where God wants me to be.”
When it came time to attend college, Rosemary's dad used a geometry compass and drew a circle on a map six hours out of the area she lived in, saying that his name was her name within that six hour circle, that she would be known as Ad and Mary Jo’s daughter in that space, not necessarily as her own person; she could go anywhere she wanted to college outside of that circle so she could create her name, in her own way, with her own identity. She landed at Clemson University where she was inspired by Max and Ruth Lennon (Dr. Lennon was Clemson University President 1986-1994.) and Gary and Julie Ransdell (Dr. Ransdell was Vice President for Institutional Advancement.), who were gifted, and talented leaders. Her dear friend and former boss, Pam DeFratus, lays claim to being the one who hired her FIRST. As a student at Clemson University, she found herself in the enviable position of serving as an intern in the President’s Home working with university leaders on a daily basis. It was at that time she realized a career in higher education would allow her to serve others in a myriad of ways.
Dr. Thomas’ waking, and most likely, sleeping hours are spent in service. She highlights service as defining the path to her professional success. She was raised with the philosophy that service is our “payment to God for living on this earth”. Everywhere she goes she works diligently to find the strengths, weaknesses, successes, and ways to help address needs of where she is. She says that this can only be learned by working hand in hand with the people who call it home. God works through us in caring for others. As we serve our students, support our colleagues, and build our team…we are doing God’s work according to His plan.
As a fourth-generation clubwoman, Dr. Thomas served as Chief Operating Officer of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC). She often speaks of a defining moment from childhood when the women of her mother’s club were gathered for the unveiling of the Jaws of Life (hydraulic tool used to free victims trapped in cars) they had just purchased for their local rescue squad. With news cameras rolling, and reporters capturing the moment in picture and word, the ah-ha moment occurred when a rescue squad member rushed into the press conference needing the Jaws of Life immediately. There had been an accident and because of that tool being donatedsomeone was saved that day. It was a bold realization of how and why community service matters.
She has served in numerous positions for the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of West Virginia; her favorite is likely Rhododendron Girls State, which she has been part of for 40 years, and now is the director. She attended Girls State as a teenager following in her mother’s footsteps. She would probably decree if she were president of our great nation that everyone should attend Girls State or Boys State; just think for a minute of what our political world would look like. The only thing more important than civic engagement is civic awareness. We have to know our communities in order to find ways to support them and improve upon what we already have in place. She has served as the Board Chair of Community Care of West Virginia, that was her regional FQHC (federally qualified health center). She has also spent much of her adult life working with the American Cancer Society and United Way as a volunteer.
Dr. Thomas says that God’s love fills her tank. She expresses that great love by using her talents and Rosemary Thomas is incredibly talented. Her amazing organizational skills are one of her many strengths which carried her to the position she now holds. She has the knowledge and genius for connecting resources to people, programs and organizations in need. She is powerfully positive in the best of ways. She is a brilliant public speaker.
Her expertise at speaking was evident during this year's 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. When there was time before a moment of silence in remembrance of the North Tower strike from that fateful day, she was asked if she would like to comment. Her remarks were heartfelt, organized and truly phenomenal. When complimented on her performance, she reflected that God has given us all talents and her public speaking capacity is a gift.
Dr. Thomas shared that at some of the darkest times of her life, when she had to stand at a podium and share remarks, the words coming from her soul were some of her best, but they were not
hers. She openly shares that “God allows me to witness in words. He allows us all to testify in different ways. I don't build houses, or have musical talent, or create works of art or gourmet meals. But I can find the words I need in most instances”. Dr. Thomas is a great example of using gifts from God in support of others, no matter what.
“There is an intersection between service and learning. If you’re not embracing altruistic and philanthropic thinking, you are missing a huge life lesson.” Dr. Thomas will tell you that she loves what she does. She loves her job. She loves her vocation. But she has an intrinsic need to participate in the bigger picture.
Rosemary’s faith in God reaches with long arms enfolding her love of people. Even in turmoil, she doesn’t lose faith in humankind. There are a lot of people out there for you and a lot of individuals who need you. We have the families we are born into, but we also have the families we create. Rosemary is a single woman who is living far from the family into which she was born. After all, Ad Thomas did encourage her to create her own name and life. She shares that family has been found and built throughout her life’s journey, which has brought her to Chowan University. Strong families help each other emotionally and spiritually; they hold each other accountable, and they support one another. In the time she has been with us, some would say our Chowan family has gone from concerned to constructive. A faculty member was overheard in the cafeteria saying that she loves coming to work. Being on campus is a happy experience where students are laughing and talking, faculty and staff are smiling. Students say she is “caring, loving, energetic, and exactly what we need. She knows my name. She treats us like we matter; she believes in us.”
As for the moment of here and now, Dr. Thomas says, “This is the right place, the right time and the right team. The team that assembles in the chapel; the team that assembles at the foot of the cross. The team that cares for our students.” She went on to share to the CCSA scholarship students that we learn more from them than we are teaching. We learn humility and honesty. We are accountable to them and to their families. Hope is alive!
One might hear Rosemary saying there is a reason the rear-view mirror is small and the windshield large. You need to focus forward and not on where you’ve been (Mel Robbins). Accept the journey you are on. We can help shape the future through service. Dr. Thomas wants us to know that her past is beautiful, and she’s blessed by it, but she is feeling the responsibility, as we all do, to shape the future of 18–22-year-olds who chose Chowan. She is fortifying our future with hope and optimism.
Chowan University welcomes Rosemary Thomas with open arms to our family and shares Meredith Long’s words, “The Chowan University community shares with you a promise to rise when you rise, to lean in when you lean in, to dance when you dance, to grieve when you grieve, to grapple when you grapple, and without hesitation, to follow where you lead. Lead well, Dr. Thomas. We will follow.”
THOMAS’ COMMITMENT
Alongside a three story historic Georgian Colonial building, complete with columns and rocking chairs on the front porch, sits a beautiful chapel. I love God and knew I was in His presence at Chowan University. I found home. The Christian faith here is strong and important. It is very comfortable and confirming to be in a place that is unapologetic about faith while welcoming to those coming from Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism as well as Christianity. Soon after arriving on campus, I attended services in The Chowan Chapel and continue to do so Wednesday and Sunday evenings where I feel the highest level of reassurance that I am in the presence of God.
I am here to serve the students, faculty and staff, but on Wednesday and Sunday nights I am able to sit and receive God’s grace through the music and ministry of the beautiful people in front and all around me. It is my opportunity to fill myself up again and give thanks to God for holding me in His hands. The students inspire me every single night. The music is beautiful. The message is powerful. The reactions of the students is inspiring. The prayer time at the altar is moving. The number of people in the chapel makes my heart swell with pride and gratitude. Thank you God, for allowing me to be in this place, at this time, with these people.
When we talk about the word family it means a lot of different things to different people. Many students on this campus are surrounded by family. Some of them have the same last name; some share a home; some are chosen. Nearly 70% of our student population are athletes. They may bring a family with them who fill the stands and cheer, wear Chowan gear displaying the sport of their favorite Hawk, check on their grades and make sure they have what they need; others are coming here and thinking they hope to meet somebody cares; they need to find a family that will hold them close and pat their back, celebrate their accomplishment, and cry when they have to say goodbye.
Caring families help each other emotionally and spiritually; they hold each other accountable and they support one another. Chowan reaches out to their students, and wraps their arms around them creating a beautiful chosen family. Because of the warmth this brings, learning and growth can happen. As students leave Chowan, they know how to build more chosen families, spreading this important foundation wherever their life’s journey takes them.
Nicola J. Khoury, a recent Distinguished Alumni recipient, shared his experience. “While I studied accounting at Chowan, the impact of community and philanthropy on me and my family ignited a deep passion for higher education. Today I have the privilege of working to ensure that other students just like me have the opportunity to access an education because I know first hand that it does not just change lives; it transforms their families; it transforms their communities. I am fully blessed to work at one of the top institutions in the country and wherever I go I proudly represent Chowan University. President Thomas, I am excited for what the future holds with your leadership. Please know that as a proud Hawk I’m here to support you and help advance Chowan’s mission. Thank you all for being here. Thank you all for your support. Simply, thank you for being my home away from home.”
Family here is the glue that holds us together. You come with your own family, you grow your own family, and you leave with a vastly expanded definition of family.
When we think about the future, we think about what the future holds. We think about what the future looks like. We think about what the future can potentially be. We think about the Chowan that does not turn its back on why they are here, faith and family. But we also must think about a Chowan that makes a difference to all who we can reach.
Chowan is a place where faith, family, and future converge. Our future is built upon the foundation of faith and family as we focus on incorporating practical knowledge and immersive learning into our new curriculum model. Our future must be based on students learning to communicate effectively, growing spiritually, learning to solve problems, becoming responsible financially, building confidence, knowing how to solve problems with confidence and developing professionalism to step into the rest of their lives. As we expect our students to come away with these life skills, we must also incorporate them into all that we do.
We see this in our programs. Our business and sport science departments, under the direction of Hunter Taylor and Tom Collins, are receiving national recognition for innovative programs, setting our students on paths to success. Harri Lovett is elevating Chowan’s business and industry partnerships to a new level, building collaboration with our community offering internships, externships and job placements. Because of the relationships we have cultivated and the reputation we are solidifying, we have a seat at that table and a voice in those conversations.
We are in the process of repurposing spaces and adjusting our campus to be seen as vital and vibrant. This is apparent in the renovation of the
The light of hope, optimism and courage is apparent as I see it clearly when engaged with students, faculty and staff, all proving that the future of Chowan is in our hands and the “family” that we build. Chowan has remained, and will continue to be grounded in Christian faith while transforming the lives of students of promise. If we keep the faith, if we build our family… our future will not only be strong, it will be remarkable.

Dr. Thomas,
From the moment I met you back in December 2023, I knew there was something special and captivating about you. Your presence alone during the Presidential Search at the Admissions Welcome House truly impressed me, and to be honest, was quite a motivator. Your work has not gone unnoticed, and your journey is only beginning. I look forward to all the many successes that come! I am reminded of this verse in Romans as you start your presidency at Chowan:
Romans 15:13 (NIV)“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
May God’s many blessings be upon you and Chowan. ~Ashlee’ Perry
