My time here has been deeply rewarding, though I wish I had more opportunities to connect with the amazing Class of 2024. I had the honor of participating in the Holy Week revival, witnessing baptisms, cheering on our teams, celebrating our seniors at graduation and the senior banquet, and presenting awards to outstanding students. This is truly a special place, full of spirit and dedication.

As we look ahead, our faculty and staff are working tirelessly to implement our new life skills curriculum and innovative learning model, designed to enhance our educational offerings and better equip our students for the future. We believe in cultivating more than just academic excellence. Our commitment to faith, family, and future is at the heart of everything we do.

Faith: Our community is grounded in faith, providing a supportive environment where one can explore and deepen their spiritual journey. Through worship, service, and fellowship, we encourage students to build a strong moral foundation that will guide them throughout their lives.

CELEBRATING 175 YEARS WITH A SERVICE AND TIME CAPSULE

Chowan University proudly marked the 175th anniversary in October with a week-long celebration culminating in a memorable ceremony and time capsule burying. Founded in 1848 near the birthplace of American civilization and the early area of Baptist work in North Carolina, Chowan University has a rich history of providing quality education for over a century and a half.

Faculty, staff, students, community members, and regional dignitaries gathered at the Chowan Chapel to celebrate.

Proclamations were read by or on behalf of US Senator for North Carolina Thom Tillis, NC Representative Bill Ward, NC Senator Bobby Hanig, Hertford County Commissioner John D. Horton, and Mayor of Murfreesboro Hal Thomas.

In addition to this momentous occasion, on the eve of the 175th anniversary, the same proclamation read by Senator Hanig was read at the NC Senate Chamber, approved and shared across our state. President Chuck Taylor, John Tayloe, Assistant to the President, Board Chairman Kemper Baker, and several other Board of Trustees and Board of Visitors were present in the Chamber.

Following the service on October 11th, attendees gathered to bury the time capsule that will be opened in 50 years. Chowan students, faculty, staff, friends, and alumni had a special opportunity during the 175th Anniversary Exhibit in Green Hall to contribute to a Time Capsule. These heartfelt messages and mementos will be an enduring legacy of Chowan University for generations to come.

The 175th-anniversary celebration was a testament to the enduring legacy of Chowan University and its unwavering dedication to education, faith, and community. As the university looks to the future, it remains committed to its mission of providing a well-rounded education and making a positive impact on the lives of its students and the communities it serves.

RINGING OF THE BELL CEREMONY

C

howan University hosted its traditional ringing of the bell ceremony for graduates following its annual Senior Banquet in April, a cherished tradition that brings together students, faculty, and staff to reflect on their Chowan experience. The event was a resounding success, featuring heartfelt speeches and memorable moments. Malachi Cobb, Skyler Davies, Manuela Jimenez, and Olivia Wheeler shared their stories and the obstacles they overcame during their time at Chowan. The Senior Banquet provided an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to come together in celebration of our graduates before they took the stage at commencement.

Following the banquet, seniors were ushered to the Kerr Gazebo, where they strolled down the alumni walk to ring The Bell. A Chowan tradition, The Bell is rung when students first attend Chowan to signify the start of their time - and this night, they rang The Bell a second time to mark the end of their journey. Faculty and staff take great pride in the students, cheering on those with whom they’ve built lasting connections over the years.

TAKE FLIGHT CHOWAN UNIVERSITY CELEBRATED ITS 165TH COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY ON SATURDAY, MAY 4TH, 2024.

Commencement was momentous, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication for the graduating class. As 140 undergraduate and 34 graduate degrees were conferred in person, the room was filled with pride and excitement.

President Thomas warmly welcomed the students, expressing her regret for not having had more time with the graduating class.

Dauquann Capers, Patrick Krack, Erica Mock, Colin Riddick, and

Kashara Simpson were the esteemed speakers for the graduation ceremony. Each speaker took the opportunity to reflect on their time at Chowan University and share how the institution had positively impacted their life.

After the speeches were made, Jayla Parker, a music major, performed a Solo rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer”, written by Albert Hay Malotte. Parker was accompanied by Prof. Suzanne Daniel on piano.

During the ceremony, the recipients of the Senior Scholastic Awards were announced. Erica Mock, Logan Jeffrey, Bailey Wilcox, and Olivia Wheeler were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements.

Additionally, Professor Gregory S. Taylor was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the university’s educational mission. The recipient of this award is chosen by the faculty of the University.

Bailey Wilcox and Martha Ledford were the Gonfaloniers for Undergraduate Studies and Graduate Studies, respectively, acknowledging their exemplary leadership and outstanding academic accomplishments.

Junior Commencement Marshals, including Haydon Ahlers, Cameryn Barrow, Alexandra Bishop, Caryn Bowe, Zachary Boyd, Carson Everette, Elizabeth Heller, Rowan Hudson, Aaron James, Megan Roberts, Kayleigh Roberts, Carrington Williams, and Ronaldo Williams, were present to support the graduating class.

Chowan University extends heartfelt congratulations to the 165th graduating class, commending their dedication and perseverance.

The university takes immense pride in their accomplishments and wishes them success in their future endeavors.

CELEBRATING CHOWAN'S

OLDEST GRADUATE On May 4, 2024, Jerry Hester made history as she walked across the stage to receive her Associate of Arts in General Studies, becoming the oldest graduate in the recorded history of Chowan University. At 75, Jerry's journey was a testament to perseverance, love, and unwavering faith.

Reflecting on her achievement, Jerry shared, "I am thankful for every day I have lived – I should have done this a long time ago, but life got in the way." Her journey began in 1966 when she first attended then Chowan College, drawn here by her father, a Baptist minister who knew thenPresident Bruce Whitaker and was offered a minister's discount. Alongside her twin sister, Janet, Jerry moved to Chowan, but there was no room in the residence halls.

Instead, they stayed in a house across from the main gates of campus what was then known as "College Street Hall."

Despite the challenges, Jerry thoroughly enjoyed her time at Chowan.

In the spring of 1967, she met Larry Hester, the center on the football team. "Larry was always there, smiling," she recalled. "After our first date, I was head over heels in love."

However, her burgeoning romance led to struggles with her grades as she spent “more time with Larry than with her books.”

Jerry's life took a different path when she left Chowan in 1968, feeling she wasn’t smart enough or worthy enough for college. She returned to Hampton, Virginia, where Larry proposed to her in 1968 and they were married in 1969. Larry was drafted for the Vietnam War, then inducted into the Army in February of 1971. Because of a critical need for someone with accounting skills, which he gained at Chowan, Larry was diverted from Vietnam to Army Headquarters, Europe in Heidelberg, Germany. Jerry and their son Chip joined him in Germany eight months later.

After Larry's military service, the family settled in Raleigh, NC, Larry worked for his father's business, and Jerry devoted herself to being a wife and mother to their two children.

Tragedy struck when Larry was only 33; he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that would eventually lead to complete blindness. Despite this, the couple supported each other through thick and thin, making the best of their circumstances. "We made as normal a life as we could," Jerry said. "I didn't have time to think about doing anything else – I believed that taking care of Larry was what God meant for me to do."

Jerry's journey wasn't without its hardships. Her mother had a devastating stroke causing paralysis, and her father died in a tragic car accident. With resilience and grace, Jerry and Larry took her mother into their home for nine years, transforming their living room into a bedroom while taking care of her.

During these years, Jerry discovered a passion for art. She became a student of Maria Lestyah, a Hungarian immigrant and mother of twelve, who taught her color theory and the proper way to paint. Through this mentorship, Jerry eventually worked as a copyist.

Years passed, and Jerry couldn't shake the feeling of an unfinished chapter in her life. She wanted to complete her education but kept putting it off, especially the math class she dreaded. Encouraged by Larry and close friends, including Chuck and Carol Taylor, who became interim President and First Lady of Chowan in 2023, Jerry finally reached out to Chowan University to explore her options for finishing her degree.

Meeting with Richard Todd, her advisor, Jerry created a plan.

Despite the challenges of online classes and her self-doubt, she was determined to succeed. With Larry's unwavering support, she worked hard, often into the long hours of the night. "When you go through tough things in life, you realize your own strength," she said.

Although Jerry originally wanted a degree in studio art, she found fulfillment in her Associate of Arts in General Studies.

"This has fulfilled what I left incomplete," she said with pride.

Her journey, marked by love, loss, and unwavering faith, came full circle as she stood on stage, diploma in hand. Jerry Hester’s story is a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to follow your dreams and complete what you started.

Alumni Awards Chowan University, celebrating its 175th anniversary, is proud of its rich history of preparing students for active learning, career success, personal growth, and service to society. Founded in 1848 as a small Baptist Female Institute, Chowan University has evolved into a vibrant institution that shapes the future of its students and alumni while recognizing the contributions of graduates and community members who demonstrate exceptional dedication to those around them.

YOUNG ALUMNUS AWARD

ZACHARY ANDREW COOPER '17

C

howan University proudly presented the Young Alumnus Award to Zachary Andrew Cooper, a distinguished 2017 graduate, during a special ceremony held on October 7, 2023. The award was presented by Pamela C. Woodard, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at Chowan University.

Zack Cooper, a Summa Cum Laude graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice and a Minor in History, demonstrated remarkable excellence throughout his academic and athletic careers. At Chowan, Zack not only achieved high academic standards but also made a significant impact on the baseball field. His athletic prowess earned him All-CIAA honors in 2016 and D2CCA Third Team All-American honors in 2017, highlighting his exceptional performance as a member of the university’s baseball team.

Following his undergraduate studies, Zack pursued a Juris Doctor degree at the Robert Khayat School of Law at the University of Mississippi, graduating in the fall of 2019. He continued to build on his academic success by passing the North Carolina Bar Exam in 2020. With a commitment to making estate planning accessible and affordable for young families, Zack founded his own law practice, Zachary A. Cooper Law. His firm focuses on estate planning and probate law, ensuring that his clients receive dedicated service and peace of mind for the future.

In addition to his professional achievements, Zack enjoys traveling with his wife, Megan, and indulges in his passion for golf. He is actively involved in Fairview Baptist Church in Apex, NC, where he and Megan have participated in various short-term mission trips, including recent excursions to Hungary and Ukraine.

Zack’s connection to Chowan University extends beyond his time as a student. He currently serves as the President of the Alumni Council, where he plays a key role in fostering relationships among alumni, organizing events, and supporting the university's initiatives, including fundraising efforts on Giving Day.

Zack Cooper, a Summa Cum Laude graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice and a Minor in History, demonstrated remarkable excellence throughout his academic and athletic careers.

The Young Alumnus Award presented to Zachary Andrew Cooper recognizes his outstanding achievements and his unwavering dedication to positively impacting his community and beyond.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

ANTHONY M. RAWLINGS, SR. '11

C

howan University proudly presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to Pastor Anthony M. Rawlings, Sr., a 2011 graduate. The award was presented by M. Christopher White, Former President and Chancellor of Chowan University, who served from 2003 to 2020.

Pastor Anthony M. Rawlings, Sr., is the Lead Pastor of Celebration Church in Franklin, Virginia, and a multifaceted individual whose contributions have left an indelible mark on both his community and beyond. His journey continued in November 2011 when he graduated from Chowan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Religion.

Pastor Rawlings has dedicated his life to serving others and has been involved in various boards and organizations, including Early Childhood Western Tidewater, United Way, The Planning Commission for the City of Franklin, Franklin/Southampton Wellness Coalition, and the Franklin Southampton Charity Board. In his role on the latter, he played a pivotal role in helping the board make critical decisions on grant allocations to benefit applicants throughout the Western Tidewater region of Virginia.

With a wealth of experience and expertise, Pastor Rawlings has earned certifications as a Transformational Coach, Course and Content Creator, and a Certified Church Consultant. His coaching niches encompass Executive Coaching, Organizational Coaching, Life Coaching, Leadership Coaching, Clarity Coaching, and Time Management Coaching. For over 15 years, he has empowered individuals to unlock their potential and fortify their mental resilience on their transformational journeys.

Pastor Rawlings is not only a leader in his professional life but also in his personal life. He is married to Elder Eureka Rawlings, and together, they are parents to six wonderful children: Anthony Jr., Amber, Andrew, Ashley, Alicia, and Aaron. Inspired by the generational legacy of his beloved grandparents, Harvey and Alie Boone, and his parents, Raymond and Sarah Pope, Pastor Rawlings is committed to showing others that they can be generational trendsetters.

Pastor Anthony M. Rawlings, Sr., Lead Pastor of Celebration Church in Franklin, Virginia, has significantly impacted his community.

Reflecting on his life’s journey, Pastor Rawlings lives by the motto, “You don’t go as far as your dream, you go as far as your team,” a principle instilled in him by his pastor, Dr. Dharius Daniels.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

THERESA PAIGE MYERS '88

C

howan University proudly recognized Theresa Paige Myers, a 1988 graduate, for her outstanding achievements and contributions to the fields of textile conservation and costume design. The prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Ms. Myers at a special ceremony held on October 7, celebrating her remarkable career and her deep connection to Chowan University.

Born and raised in Ahoskie, North Carolina, Theresa Paige Myers is the daughter of Elaine Myers and the late Lawrence W. Myers.

Ms. Myers embarked on her educational journey at Chowan, graduating in 1988 with a degree in Liberal Arts. She continued her academic pursuits, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Clothing and Textiles from East Carolina University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Ecology with a specialization in Textile Conservation from the University of Alberta, Canada.

Ms. Myers has dedicated over 28 years to the field of textile conservation and has made significant contributions to preserving historical artifacts. Her career includes contract work for prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian and the National Museum of American History. She also completed internships at renowned organizations, including the American Textile History Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, and Biltmore Estate.

A committed member of the Costume Society of America since 1991, Ms. Myers is also affiliated with the American Institute for Conservation and the Southeast Regional Conservation Association. From 2016 to 2018, she served as a board member of the North Carolina Preservation Consortium, further demonstrating her dedication to preserving cultural heritage.

Beyond her professional achievements, Ms. Myers generously volunteers as a living historian at several historic sites in North Carolina, including the Joel Lane House in Raleigh, the House in the Horseshoe in Sanford, and Historic Hope Plantation in Windsor.

Reflecting on her time at Chowan University, Ms. Myers shared, “The impact that Chowan had on me was the great base of education that I received right out of high school. On this foundation, I have built my career and used skills from what I learned during my time at Chowan throughout my professional and personal life.”

She also noted the significant role that public speaking played in her career, recalling a course taught by Dr. Joyce Elliott (Brown) that helped hone her communication skills. “In all, I look back fondly on my time at Chowan and the friends I made and the knowledge I gained. I have carried and will continue to carry those memories with me always.”

The Distinguished Alumni Award holds special significance for Ms. Myers due to her family’s enduring legacy at Chowan University. She stated, “My family is still very involved in activities at the University. One great example of this involvement is the posthumous gift from my father toward the purchase of a grand piano for the auditorium. He loved music and the university and has shared that through a bequest that will last for generations.”

In addition to her work in conservation, Ms. Myers boasts a rich career in costume design, spanning over 30 years. She has collaborated with companies such as Raleigh Creative Costumes and Troika, Inc. and has contributed her expertise to various local film productions as a wardrobe assistant, FX makeup artist, properties master, and production manager. Notably, her involvement in films like “Dar He: The Lynching of Emmett Till” and “Box Brown: A Box Marked Freedom” has garnered critical acclaim.

FREDDIE HAVANA DAVIS '81

howan University proudly celebrated the remarkable achievements of one of its esteemed alumni, Mr. Freddie Havana Davis, a 1981 graduate of the institution.

The Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Mr. Davis in recognition of his outstanding contributions to his community, his remarkable career, and his unwavering commitment to excellence.

The prestigious award ceremony took place at Chowan University, with Mr. Edward Wooten, a former faculty member presiding over the event.

Freddie Havana Davis, a proud graduate of Chowan University’s Class of 1981, continued his educational journey at Appalachian State University, graduating in 1984. Hailing from Morganton, NC, Mr. Davis had a stellar academic and athletic career at Freedom High School, where he distinguished himself as both a standout student and athlete.

Throughout his life, Mr. Davis shared a strong and enduring bond with his beloved wife, best friend, and business partner, Teresa, of 38 years. Together, they lived in Lenoir, NC, and Nokomis, FL, and were blessed with a close-knit family, including their daughters Tiffany Bowman and Terra Bryant, along with their families.

During his time at Chowan University, Mr. Davis held several leadership positions, demonstrating his commitment to excellence.

He served as the President of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Fraternity, President of The Monogram Club, and was appointed SGA Auditor.

His exceptional leadership qualities led to his recognition in “Who’s Who Among America’s Colleges and Universities.”

In 2001, Mr. Davis received the honor of being inducted into the Garrison Sports Hall Of Fame, a testament to his exceptional baseball career under the guidance of Hall Of Fame Coach Jerry Hawkins. Mr. Davis was not only named team Captain but also earned a spot on the Region X Western Conference first-team All-Conference. His baseball achievements included winning the batting title, earning MVP honors, receiving the Coach’s award, and breaking the school’s home run record.

Following his successful stint at Chowan, Mr. Davis continued to excel at Appalachian State, where he was invited to try out for the United States Olympic Team.

Mr. and Mrs. Davis, together with their family, embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, founding, building, and successfully selling nine companies in industries ranging from Furniture and Domestic Transportation to International Shipping. Mr. Davis currently serves as the Chairman of Pelagic Consulting LLC and Gulfstream Shippers Association LLC, while also holding partnerships in Pelagic Holdings LLC, Bluewater Logistics Group LLC, Bluewater Asia LLC, and Mesa Davis Enterprise LLC. Over the years, Mr. Davis has been actively involved with various boards, contributed to economic development, and demonstrated his dedication to the furniture and transportation industry. He served as Booster Club President for several years and was a devoted 6th-grade Sunday School teacher.

Mr. Davis attributes his success to his unwavering faith in God, his deep-rooted family values, and his love for his country. His interests include spending quality time with his family, traveling, attending sporting events, and cheering on the Appalachian State football team. He also enjoys driving through the majestic Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains, hunting for shark’s teeth with Teresa on the Gulf of Mexico, and relentlessly pursuing joy.

This award, bestowed upon individuals who exemplify exceptional dedication to community service and a commitment to enriching the lives of others, was presented to Ms. Byrd in honor of her tireless efforts and commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

Ms. Byrd’s remarkable dedication to her community also led her to become deeply involved with Chowan University through her work with the Ahoskie Women’s Club and the Christian Job Corps.

Her passion for education and empowerment has paved the way for many individuals to pursue successful careers and make meaningful contributions to society.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Ms. Byrd later made Ahoskie, North Carolina, her home. Her journey has been one marked by perseverance, determination, and commitment to service. Ms. Byrd dedicated 32 years of her life to Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital, where she made significant contributions in various departments, including business, compliance, and finance. Her dedication to her career was matched only by her devotion to her faith, as she is a member of First Baptist Church in Ahoskie.

After her retirement in 2009, she established the Roanoke Chowan Christian Women’s Job Corps in Hertford County in 2011. This remarkable initiative aimed to empower women to achieve self-sufficiency through education, employment, and the embrace of spirituality as a guiding force in their lives.

Under Ms. Byrd’s leadership, the Roanoke Chowan Christian Women’s Job Corps became a beacon of hope for countless women and their families. Over the years, the organization has assisted approximately 275 women, offering educational opportunities, financial support, and encouragement to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

In 2023, the organization expanded its mission by moving to a new space known as The Gathering Place. This facility hosts community programs, including grief counseling classes, senior meetings, a clothes closet for women and men in need, and the provision of household items to those facing adversity.

howan University’s Campus Ministry group recently embarked on two impactful mission trips, showcasing the university’s commitment to service and faith. Led by Reverend Mari Wiles, the first group journeyed to Ecuador over spring break, while the second group ventured to Portland, Maine after graduation.

In Ecuador, students served in four villages – Atapo, Jatun Loma, San Francisco, and Cajabamba – partnering with the ministry Rescue Ecuador. Their activities included painting churches, performing concrete work, and organizing a children’s camp, where they shared Bible stories and engaged in recreational activities. The students were deeply moved by the hardworking and gracious people of Ecuador, particularly the women who balanced various responsibilities while caring for their families.

Reflecting on the trip, Malachi Cobb, a senior Music major, expressed a profound realization: "I don’t need a place to live, I need a place to serve." This sentiment resonated with the mission's focus on humility and making a difference. The trip served as a reminder of the transformative power of service and the importance of connecting with diverse communities.

Meanwhile, in Portland, Maine, another group of Chowan University students and faculty members dedicated themselves to serving at Preble Street, an organization supporting those experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The group participated in various activities, including serving at a resource center, cleaning up the area, and working on a compost farm. The experience broadened their understanding of these pressing social issues and inspired them to continue serving locally.

The success of the Portland mission trip was made possible by the generous support of local churches, which provided contributions, transportation, and prayers. The faculty members who accompanied the students also expressed deep gratitude for the experience, noting the presence of God throughout their journey.

HONORING INTERIM PRESIDENT CHUCK TAYLOR C

howan University recently celebrated Charles E. "Chuck" Taylor's outstanding contributions, honoring him with the prestigious Spirit of Chowan Award and an honorary doctorate in business administration. Taylor's remarkable career in higher education spans over five decades and is marked by dedication, leadership, and service.

Taylor's journey in academia began in 1968 as an Instructor in Business Administration at Nash Technical Institute. Over the years, he progressed through various roles, including Associate Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Student Services at Nash Technical Institute, similar positions at Vance-Granville Community College, and Vice President for Business and Finance at Meredith College in Raleigh. His tenure at Meredith College, where he served as Executive Vice President and Interim President, lasted seventeen years. In 2000, Taylor joined Wingate University as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer until his retirement from full-time service in 2011.

However, retirement didn't halt Taylor's commitment to education.

He continued to serve part-time or in interim capacities at various institutions, including North Carolina Independent Colleges and

Universities, Barton College, North Carolina Wesleyan University, and Chowan University, where he served as Interim President from March 2023 to March 2024. During his interim presidency at Chowan, Taylor's leadership and dedication were celebrated.

On Tuesday, February 27, Chowan University presented the prestigious Spirit of Chowan Award to Charles E. “Chuck” Taylor, in recognition of his outstanding contributions as the interim president. Mr. Taylor, concluded his tenure at the end of spring break following a successful presidential search.

The surprise ceremony, attended by faculty, staff, and distinguished guests, was held to honor Mr. Taylor’s unwavering dedication and remarkable achievements during his time as interim president. Among those present were Board of Trustees Chair Austine Evans, Board of Trustees Vice Chair Cecil Hollomon, and John Tayloe, representing Senator Ted Budd, who conveyed congratulatory remarks on behalf of the senator.

The Spirit of Chowan Award is intended to honor extraordinary individuals who so embody the light of the University that they warrant recognition by the University community. This may be a

student, faculty, staff member, or friend of the university who has overcome significant adversity or who has remained committed to the mission of the University or who has served as a role model in his or her personal relationship with God or who has embodied the spirit of the history, mission, and perseverance of the University. Since its establishment in 2002 through the vision of the late Jewell Faye Glover, a Chowan Trustee, only fourteen individuals have been awarded this honor.

Taylor's roots in North Carolina run deep, hailing from Rocky Mount. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from East Carolina University. His contributions extend beyond academia; Taylor has served as a deacon in multiple Baptist churches and currently attends Lakeside Baptist in Rocky Mount with his wife, Carol, with whom he has been married for 55 years. They have three daughters and five grandchildren.

On Saturday, May 4th, 2024, President Rosemary Thomas, on behalf of the Board of Trustees at the 165th Commencement alongside awarding degrees to 174 students, Chowan University conferred an honorary doctorate in business administration upon Taylor in recognition of his exemplary service to the institution and higher education as a whole.

In honoring Charles E. "Chuck" Taylor, Chowan University not only celebrates a remarkable career but also recognizes a lifetime of dedication, integrity, and service to the university, higher education, and beyond.

Benjamin Sutton Receives Spirit of Chowan Award During the 175th Anniversary Gala Celebration on October 7, 2023, Charles E. Taylor paid tribute to Benjamin Conrad Sutton, Sr., by bestowing upon him the esteemed Spirit of Chowan Award.

President Taylor recounted his first encounter with the name Ben Sutton, shared by his father upon receiving a significant order from Chowan College, which left an indelible impression of Mr. Sutton’s character. Years later, their paths crossed at a conference, leading to a mentorship that affirmed Sutton’s reputation for kindness, wisdom, and an infectious smile.

Born in Burlington, NC, Benjamin Conrad Sutton, Sr. was raised in a nurturing family environment, eventually graduating from high school in Mebane in 1949. Following a brief hiatus due to service in the Korean War, he earned his B.B.A. degree in business from Wake Forest University in 1956. His early career included co-managing a laundry and dry cleaning business with his father until 1961, when his journey with Chowan College began.

Dr. Bruce Whitaker, President of Chowan College, recognized Sutton's financial acumen and appointed him as the institution's chief financial officer in 1961. For the next three decades, Sutton's stewardship ensured fiscal stability, marked by balanced budgets and significant endowment growth. His influence extended beyond financial matters, as evidenced by numerous campus expansions and renovations, underscoring his commitment to Chowan's development.

Sutton's dedication wasn't confined to Chowan; he was deeply involved in the Murfreesboro community and beyond. Serving in various leadership roles, from town council member to deacon at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, his impact resonated widely.

Furthermore, his contributions to regional economic development and education, including service on the board of Ridgecroft School, exemplified his civic-minded ethos.

VISITING WHITE HOUSE

Criminal Justice Department Visits the White House On Saturday, October 28th, a group of Chowan University students embarked on an unforgettable educational journey to the nation’s capital. Led by Dr. Pamela Woodard and John Tayloe, the students had the opportunity to explore Washington, DC, and engage in enriching experiences that will leave a lasting impact on their lives.

The day began with an exciting private guided tour of the capitol, courtesy of Congressman Greg Murphy’s communication director, Alex Crane. The students were captivated as they strolled through the Senate building and the renowned Library of Congress. Lunch was enjoyed at the historic Old Ebbitt Grill, the oldest restaurant in DC, where a surprise visit from Adida Manseka, a former Chowan student and graduate, added to the excitement.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the exclusive West Wing tour at the White House. Richard Whitted, a Secret Service agent and Chowan University alumnus, provided invaluable insights into his role and daily responsibilities. The students were enthralled as they learned about the inner workings of one of the most iconic buildings in the world.

Throughout the day, the students proudly sported pink and black attire, sparking conversations and connections with fellow visitors.

They eagerly discussed career choices, internships, and strategies for success, seeking guidance on how to manage their goals and dreams. The day even began with a practical life lesson, as the students learned the art of tying a tie.

Chowan University was well represented during this trip, and Dr. Woodard expressed her pride in the students’ engagement and enthusiasm. The memories made during this educational excursion will undoubtedly shape their futures and inspire them.

2024 HOBSON LECTURE DE’SHAWN CHARLES WINSLOW The 30th annual Hobson Lecture, held at Chowan University, celebrated the literary achievements of De’Shawn Charles Winslow, an esteemed author from Elizabeth City. Winslow, known for his novels ‘Decent People’ and ‘In West Mills’, captivated the audience with his insightful storytelling and profound exploration of family connections.

The day commenced with an engaging Q&A session between Winslow and students enrolled in the annual Hobson Seminar.

Eager to delve into the author’s creative process, the students posed questions about his writing techniques, character development, and personal growth as an author.

Later that evening, a distinguished dinner was hosted in honor of Winslow in the Chowan Room, where he was bestowed with the prestigious Mary Francis Hobson Prize. The prize, a medal featuring a stunning rendition of the McDowell Columns Building, symbolizes Winslow’s exceptional contributions to the literary world.

Following the dinner, Winslow graced the stage at Vaughan Auditorium, captivating the audience with a reading from both of his celebrated novels. The passages he shared eloquently highlighted the profound impact of family connections, leaving the audience inspired and moved.

CELEBRATING EASTER WITH HOLY WEEK REVIVAL Chowan University recently concluded its annual Holy Week Revival, a four day event filled with worship, testimonies, and spiritual growth. The campus community came together to celebrate the Easter season and deepen their faith through various religious activities.

The Holy Week Revival commenced with a powerful worship service led by Senior Erica Mock at the Chowan Chapel. Mock’s heartfelt message resonated with the attendees, setting the tone for the rest of the week. The following evening, Chowan Alumnus Jaylon Boyd, ’23, returned to campus to share his personal testimony, inspiring students with his journey of faith and resilience.

Tuesday’s highlight was an awe-inspiring sermon delivered by Pastor Jed Hill, a former Penn State football player turned pastor. Hill’s message touched the hearts of all who listened, leaving a lasting impact on the Chowan community.

The week culminated with Wednesday Night Worship, where Rev. Mari Wiles and Dr. Jill Awuni led a baptism ceremony at the Chowan Chapel.

This sacred event provided an opportunity for individuals to publicly declare their faith and commitment to God. Throughout the week, the campus was filled with an overwhelming sense of faith and spirituality.

Students, faculty, and staff experienced the presence of God and witnessed the transformative power of His love. The Holy Week Revival served as a reminder of the strong faith community that exists at Chowan University.

First Advent Service in the Chowan Chapel The Chowan University campus gathered on Monday, December 4th, to celebrate the first Advent Service in the newly constructed Chowan Chapel. Led by Reverend Mari Wiles, the students and faculty came together to present an enchanting advent pageant, recounting the timeless story of the three wise men visiting the Baby Jesus.

The service featured a captivating performance by Jeannette Ahmes, who portrayed the angel “Gabriella”. Ahmes met each of the wise men, played by Taylor Furlough, Gregory Wright, and Patrick Krack, before they presented their gifts to the Christ Child.

In a remarkable twist, each of the gifts – gold, frankincense, and myrrh – transformed into symbolic representations of the tools Jesus would require to lead a nation to salvation.

Austine Evans named Board of Trustees Chair Austine Evans, a distinguished alumna of Wake Forest University, has been named chair of Chowan University’s Board of Trustees, effective January 1, 2024. With an impressive background in education and a deep commitment to student success, Evans brings a wealth of experience and passion to her new role. Having served previously as a Board of Trustees member for both Peace College – now recognized as William Peace University – and Wake Forest University, her wealth of knowledge will create a valuable insight as she takes on this new role at Chowan. The entire Chowan community eagerly anticipates the positive impact Mrs. Evans will have on the commitment to student success.

The advent service served as a poignant reminder that sometimes the gift we offer may not be the gift that is truly needed. Through this creative interpretation of the birth of Jesus, the Chowan community was encouraged to reflect on the importance of discerning the true needs of others and responding accordingly.

The Chowan Chapel, a magnificent addition to the campus, provided a fitting backdrop for this momentous occasion. Its elegant architecture and serene atmosphere created a sacred space for worship and reflection. The advent service marked the beginning of a new chapter in the spiritual life of Chowan University, as the chapel will continue to serve as a place of worship, contemplation, and community for years to come.

Cecil Hollomon named Board of Trustees Vice Chair Chowan University’s Board of Trustees has named Cecil Hollomon as the Vice Chair, effective January 1. Hollomon, having been recognized as a distinguished alumni of the university, attended the university following in his family’s footsteps to pursue a degree in Business. After graduating with the class of 1968, he obtained a BS and MS and dedicated 38 years of his life as a middle school counselor in the pursuit of empowering students to pursue their own personal and educational goals. We look forward to all of the efforts he will undoubtedly make to ensure the success of the graduates of Chowan University.

CCSA Reaches a Million Dollars during Chowan Gives 2024 Chowan University surpassed its iconic goal of $175, for the 2024 Chowan Gives event while continuing to celebrate its 175th anniversary. In the 1,848 minutes of fundraising, 664 generous donors came together to surpass the goal, and $212,647 was raised.

The CCSA Missions fund helps assist our students in the cost of being able to serve both domestically and internationally. Our students are able to travel around the world to share their faith and grow their community.

With this fund, almost 600 students have been able to travel on 32 mission trips with Chowan University. The CCSA Missions fund will ensure that students will be able to keep serving around the world.

UNVEILING HISTORY: GREGG HECIMOVICH EXPLORES THE LIFE OF HANNAH CRAFTS AT CHOWAN UNIVERSITY On Monday, March 25th, Chowan University had the privilege of hosting Gregg Hecimovich, a professor of English at Furman University. Hecimovich delivered a captivating lecture on his highly acclaimed biography, “The Life and Times of Hannah Crafts: The True Story of the Bondwoman’s Narrative.” This remarkable work has garnered significant recognition, including being selected as “One of the 10 Best Books of 2023” by The Washington Post, which described it as “part thriller, part mystery, and part biography.”

“The Life and Times of Hannah Crafts” delves into the captivating journey of uncovering the author of the first novel written by an African American woman. Hecimovich’s meticulous research and dedication led him to trace the roots of this groundbreaking author to Murfreesboro, North Carolina. The narrative takes readers on a compelling search process, unraveling the mysteries surrounding Hannah Crafts and shedding light on her extraordinary life.

Chowan University holds a special connection to Hannah Crafts, as some of the first students at the university resided in the house of John Wheeler, where Hannah was enslaved. This historical link adds an extra layer of significance to the university’s role in hosting this enlightening lecture.

The university was honored to provide a platform for Hecimovich to share his insights and discoveries with the community. The lecture was attended by students, faculty, and members of the public, who were captivated by the story and Hecimovich’s expertise in the field of English literature.

2024 ROUSON MEMORIAL LECTURE THE REVEREND PAMELA TAYLOR The 2024 annual Rouson Memorial lecture, held in the Chowan Chapel, was a wonderful celebration of individuals in the local communities serving as beacons of success and pioneers of their communities. The lecture made possible in collaboration with the Murfreesboro Historical Association, showcased the remarkable achievements and contributions of three outstanding individuals.

It is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the unwavering commitment to education and service.

Highlighting the morning were two prestigious awards presented to exceptional individuals who have made a significant impact in their respective fields. The Futrell/Ruffin Community Service Award, a recognition of extraordinary dedication to the community, was bestowed upon Emma P. Peoples. As a Chowan Graduate and the first African American Student to attend the university, Peoples’ groundbreaking achievements were previously acknowledged in November 2023.

Another remarkable recipient was Orlanda G. Reed, who received the Minnie Wood Perkins Humanitarian Award. Reed, a resident

of Hertford County, has dedicated her life to serving God and her community, traveling the world to minister in Africa and embodying the true spirit of humanitarianism.

Reverend Pamela G. Taylor, a Chowan Alumni, delivered an inspiring lecture that captivated the audience. Her words of love, encouragement, hope, and prosperity for the university resonated deeply with all attendees, leaving a lasting impression.

In her lecture, entitled “You Can, and I want You To”, Talor called for those in attendance to go back to the roots of loving and supporting each other in times of struggle. She spoke briefly about her own academic journey, encouraging other students to see her success and reflect on what has brought them this far when others have doubted their accomplishments. The success of the event was made possible by the generous contributions of the dedicated family and friends who have donated to the Rouson Memorial Scholarship. Their support ensures that deserving students have the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams at Chowan.

Thomas, with a captivating musical event night organized by the International Student Club. The evening showcased the remarkable talents of Chowan’s students, who mesmerized the audience with their guitar, piano, and electronic performances. Held in the Chowan Chapel, the event not only highlighted the students’ exceptional abilities but also served as a warm welcome to Dr. Thomas as she settles in on our campus.

The International Student Club, known for fostering cultural exchange and unity, orchestrated an unforgettable evening that perfectly captured the essence of Chowan University’s vibrant community. The event was a testament to the university’s commitment to providing a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically and artistically.

Dr. Rosemary Thomas expressed her appreciation to the students, stating, “I am grateful to you, and for you, for blessing me with your gifts here this evening…I am just overcome with joy and overcome with gratitude.” As the newly appointed President, Dr. Thomas’ presence at the event symbolized her dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive campus culture. Joining her at the event were Mrs. Austin Evans, Chair of the Board of Trustees, as well as representatives of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, of which Dr. Thomas has proudly been a member.

Dr. Shelley Greene as VP for Enrollment and Development Chowan University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shelley Greene as Vice President for Enrollment and Development.

Dr. Greene brings valuable experience from her previous role as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Randolph Community College. Her leadership, strategic planning, and budget management skills will drive growth at Chowan.

Dr. Greene, a native of Highfalls, NC, holds a BA in Mass Communication/Marketing from Campbell University and an MS in Integrated Marketing Communication from West Virginia University. In 2023, she earned her Doctor of Strategic Leadership from Liberty University.

IMMERSIVE BIOLOGY FIELD EXPERIENCE

C

howan University’s Department of Biology offers a popular field ecology class on the northern Outer Banks, providing students with hands-on experience in taxonomic identification, data collection techniques, and participation in ongoing research.

This summer, students contributed to studies on prothonotary warbler breeding biology, biodiversity in maritime forest ponds, and monitoring submerged aquatic vegetation communities.

Guided by Dr. James “Bo” Dame and Dr. Heather McGuire, the course culminates in a week of field activities along the Outer Banks.

Students live and work out of the historic Pine Island hunting lodge, exploring diverse coastal habitats at Audubon’s Pine Island Sanctuary, Currituck Banks National Estuarine Research Reserve, Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve, Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges, and Albemarle Sound in Bertie County.

Throughout the course, students acquire skills in water quality and meteorological data collection, coastal vegetation identification, and species surveys using various techniques. These activities offer a comprehensive understanding of coastal ecosystems and the species that inhabit them, contributing to research and monitoring efforts.

Dr. Dame expressed gratitude to the organizations supporting the field experience, including Audubon North Carolina’s Pine Island Sanctuary, the North Carolina Coastal Reserve, and the National Wildlife Refuges. He and Dr. McGuire also thanked Skadi Kylander, a Chowan Biology alum and current graduate student at East Carolina University, for assisting in the course. The field ecology class remains a transformative experience, enabling students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings and preparing them for future research endeavors.

Chowan University Hosts Five Day Campapalooza

Chowan University proudly presented the 2024 Annual Senior Visual Art Exhibition, featuring the remarkable works of its graduating art & design students.

Chowan University recently hosted over forty high school students from June 23 to 28 at its annual "Campapalooza" academic summer camp. This five-day event provided rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a unique opportunity to experience university life and engage in exciting academic activities.

Participants selected one of the offered camp topics and immersed themselves in related activities throughout the week, culminating in a gallery exhibition of their projects.

The exhibition highlights the culmination of artistic endeavors by nine talented senior graphic design & studio art majors: Ishcah Browne, Sirmoses Buchannon, Komari Clark, Jalen Lockhart, Christian Oleaga, Mary Orletsky, Ulyses Ortega-Espino, Jacquis Vinson, and Savion Woodly.

Jason Fowler, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Chowan University, expressed his admiration for the graduating class, stating, “I have been so impressed with our Seniors this year. Our 2024 class of designers and artists spent the year taking their work to the next level and exploring their original ideas in ways that truly left me inspired. I am so thankful to have been a part of their design journeys, and I look forward, with anticipation, to the brands, ideas, and creative originality that I know they will bring to the world in the years to come.”

PREPARING STUDENTS

Speed Interview Event for Students Harri Lovett, Director of Business and Industry Partnerships, hosted “Speed Interviews” for students and local business professionals to connect on campus through a series of brief interviews lasting just three minutes each. This initiative aimed to equip students with essential networking skills and the ability to present themselves effectively in an interview setting.

The Speed Interview event witnessed an overwhelming response from both students and professionals, making it a success. Students not only gained valuable experience but also enhanced their confidence levels, enabling them to forge connections within the business community that will prove beneficial beyond graduation.

The camp offered students a chance to live on campus, dine in the university’s dining hall, and collaborate with esteemed faculty members. Campers enjoyed various social activities, including visits to the Hawks Nest, pool, and a tour of the Historic District.

The success of Campapalooza would not have been possible without the dedication and support of Chowan University’s faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Ella Benson led the Life Skills Bridge to College camp, while Dr. Sam Miller guided students in the art of movie-making. Jason Fowler facilitated the Design and Creativity camp, and Mike Berk shared his expertise in History and Pop Culture. Kyle Johnson oversaw the Robotics and Engineering camp, and Dr. Lia Walker and Dr. Torrence Gill led the CU CATALYST program. Dr. Mary Hellman, Dr. Christopher Cook, and Jordan Cartrette Stancil directed the Music Beatbox Factory camp, providing campers with a unique musical experience.

Chowan University President Dr. Rosemary Thomas personally welcomed the campers during their opening dinner. She encouraged them to make the most of their time on campus and enjoy the diverse range of activities available to them. Dr. Thomas also took the opportunity to meet with campers and their parents at the closing luncheon, expressing her gratitude for their participation and inquiring about their experiences. The campers responded positively, highlighting the impact of Campapalooza on their personal and academic growth.

As they prepared to embark on the next chapters of their personal and professional lives, we reflected on the immeasurable impact they had on our campus, students, and colleagues.

With an incredible 30 years of service, Dr. Danny Moore was a guiding light at Chowan. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence left an indelible mark on countless students and faculty members. Dr. Moore’s legacy was one of inspiration, as he consistently pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve together as a university and the foundation he built will continue.

Over the past 14 years, Kim Sherman Bailey brought energy, creativity, and a deep commitment to excellence to her role. Her innovative approaches and tireless work ethic made a lasting difference in the lives of our students and staff. Kim’s contributions were numerous, and her influence is still felt. The Chowan family will always remember her for the joy and dedication she brought to our community.

The departure of Dr. Danny Moore, Mari Wiles, and Kim Sherman Bailey marked the end of an era for Chowan University. While we greatly miss their presence, we are excited to see what the future holds for them. Their legacies were unparalleled, and they left behind a university that is stronger and more vibrant because of their efforts.

For 18 years, Mari Wiles was a beacon of compassion and dedication in our community.

Her work touched the hearts of many, fostering a sense of belonging and support that was at the core of Chowan’s mission. Mari’s ability to connect with others and her passion for service set a standard for what it means to be a true servant leader.

Though she has moved on to new endeavors, her spirit remains embedded in the very fabric of our institution.

As we said goodbye, we extended our deepest gratitude and best wishes for the incredible journeys that lay ahead for each of them. This designation by VIQTORY, a service-disabled veteran-owned publication focusing on post-military education and employment.

Institutions earning the designation were evaluated using public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,800 schools participated in the survey with 785 colleges, universities and trade schools earning the designation.

Patti P. Snead, '03 has been selected for a solo exhibit at the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun in Tucson, Arizona.

Susan "Sue" H. Darke, '67 became the VP of Human Resources. She is a 26 year breast cancer survivor & served as a match to newly diagnosed women as they navigated through their illness. She works part-time at a non-profit, performing all administrative/human resources functions.

Joshua Rivera, '06 was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army.

1970s Dr. Stephen R. Pickard, '72 was Teacher of the Year for Caldwell County Schools, he served 8 years as a National Board Examiner for CAEP. Susan F. Winters, '73 was named Teacher of the Year and received two Certificates of Recognition for the academic achievements of Hanover Scholars, who were among her high school graduates. She has a son, a daughter, and four grandchildren.

1990s Fred Vinson, '91 was hired by the Detroit Pistons to join Monty Williams' staff.

Vinson, who previously assisted Williams with the New Orleans Pelicans from 2010-2015. Vinson was a former student athlete at Chowan as has earned numerous accolades. He also played professionally for the Atlanta Hawks and Seattle Supersonics.

He began his coaching career with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2007 and later joined the New Orleans Hornets in 2010.

Mozell J Persom, '07 has been selected as the newest Dean of Instruction for Social and Behavioral Sciences, Business Education, and Agriculture Lance Jenkins, '09 earned a MPA (Master of Public Administration) at Norwich University. Lance describes himself as an Agency Owner (Goosehead Insurance/ Realtor/Broker), a Dad, a Husband, and a Sports Guy.

2010s Leah Lambson, '10 earned a Master of Educational Leadership Administration in 2016 from Nova Southeastern University.

She is currently the Student Activities Coordinator for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Porsche Moody, '10 is Thomas Eaton Middle School's Teacher of The Year.

Dr. Tyreeka Williamsy, '15 earned a B.S. in psychology from Chowan University, an M.A. in human services counseling from Liberty University, and an M.A. in school counseling from Regent University. She also completed her Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision at North Carolina A&T State University, where she was awarded the Inaugural College of Education Equity, Access, and Advocacy Award.

LaQuan S. Nixon, '18 was featured in Stardom 101 Magazine based out of Virginia for a Podcast Interview on iHeartRadio to promote his videos as a comedy content creator.

2020s Montivas Joyner, '20 graduated from Chowan University, obtained a MBA from the University of Maryland Global Campus and is currently working on completing a PhD in Public Administration from Liberty University while working for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Shakira A. Harris, '20 currently works as a Clinician at a non-profit agency, providing outpatient therapy to families), who have limited access to or can not afford mental health support.

Chowan Remembers Doris T. Taylor December 21, 1930 - May 6, 2023 Doris Tittsworth Taylor, leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication. Doris was an elementary teacher, devoted mother, and Assistant Acquisition Librarian at Chowan until her retirement. She was an active member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church and supported Habitat for Humanity. Doris profoundly impacted Chowan students through mentorship, embodying her commitment to Christian values and community service. Her legacy lives on through her family's devotion and the lasting impact on those she touched.

Clifton Shell “Clif” Collins September 10, 1935 - June 30, 2023 Chowan celebrates the life of Clif Collins, who served from 1965 to 2001 in various roles, including residence hall director, interim registrar, director of financial aid, and director of counseling. He was active in athletics, coaching cross country and announcing games, and he mentored many students. Collins retired as the Director of Financial Aid and left a lasting impact on the Chowan community.

Charles L. Paul November 26, 1930 - August 3, 2023 Charles L. Paul’s impact on Chowan University spanned over four decades, starting in 1963 as a history and geography professor. His dedication to education, community, and faith extended beyond academia as an ordained minister. He organized international trips, received accolades like the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and was named Professor Emeritus. Even after retirement, Paul’s legacy of nurturing young minds and fostering community continues to shape Chowan University.

Janet H. Collins February 28, 1938 - January 14, 2024 Janet August Harwood Collins, a Richmond, VA native, made a significant impact at Chowan University from 1964 to 1975, establishing comprehensive programs and coaching winning volleyball teams. Inducted into the Chowan Sports Hall of Fame in 1991 and honored with the North Carolina Governor’s Award of Excellence in 1994, Janet also served actively at Murfreesboro Baptist Church. Her legacy in education, athletics, and community service continues to inspire.

George Clayton "Bud" Warren Jr. August 5, 1937 - February 10, 2024 Chowan University mourns George Clayton "Bud" Warren Jr., who served as a mailroom employee from 1994 to 2007. Known for his warm personality and strong work ethic, Bud was cherished by colleagues and students. He loved supporting his grandsons at their sports games, enjoyed hobbies like watching *Blue Bloods*, and was an active member of Meherrin Baptist Church. Bud is remembered for his kindness and joyful spirit by his family and all who knew him.

Wayland Lawrence Jenkins, Jr. October 10, 1931 - March 2, 2024 Chowan University mourns Wayland Lawrence Jenkins, Jr., who passed away on March 2, 2024. A dedicated philanthropist and advocate for the arts, Jenkins' legacy includes the Wayland L. Jenkins, Jr. Fine Arts Center, established in 2012 through his generous support. His collection is showcased at the center, which serves as an educational space for artistic engagement. Jenkins received the Chowan University Community Service Award in 2016, and his contributions continue to enrich the university’s cultural landscape.
