Welcome! It’s the Best of Bard! For twenty years Chor Leoni has been let loose on the stage of the Bard on the Beach Festival to sing, dance, and generally act silly. This year we bring back all of the favourite numbers from the past twenty years. Only at a Chor Leoni Bard on the Beach concert could Cookie Monster share the stage with Carmen, Ladysmith Black Mambazo appear with the Time Warp, and the dancing styles range from Boot Scootin’ to Bollywood. We are glad you are here to encourage our shenanigans and hope you will continue to enjoy Chor Leoni’s summer extravaganza for another twenty years!

Erick Lichte, Artistic Director

Christopher Gaze ~ Honorary Life Member In this, our Twentieth Anniversary year, Chor Leoni is proud to recognize Christopher Gaze as an Honorary Life Member. It is due to his lasting friendship with our beloved Diane and Dick Loomer that Chor Leoni has trod the boards annually on the Bard on the Beach stage in these shows that have become iconic events in Vancouver’s choral scene. Christopher has appeared frequently with the choir in the role of soloist, host, and for one season, member of our baritone section. He has served on the Board of Chor Leoni for many years, where his unselfish wisdom, wit, and insightfulness have been of enormous benefit to the organisation. Thank you, Christopher, for your unfailing desire to see Chor Leoni flourish!

Erick Lichte Artistic Director

Now celebrating its twentieth anniversary, Vancouver’s Chor Leoni Men’s Choir was founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Diane Loomer, C.M. The choir is regarded as a leader in the Canadian male choir movement, and acts as mentor and inspiration to choirs worldwide. Whether it is a somber moment of reflection during a Remembrance Day performance or a joyful turn of comedic phrasing at a Summer Solstice show, Chor Leoni is renowned for reaching across the footlights and transforming the performance from ‘concert’ to ‘conversation.’ The “singing lions” live up to their name as they fearlessly move between musical genres, always aiming to communicate, engage, and entertain. Engendering tears of emotion, peals of laughter, and gasps of awe from their audiences, Chor Leoni prides itself on its ability to perform in many languages and styles, always sung with fresh energy and poise. Chor Leoni is committed to fostering young composers, young male singers, and conductors. PROMYS (PROgram for Mentoring Young Singers) invites talented singers from surrounding high schools to join with Chor Leoni in rehearsals and performances of their annual Remembrance Day concerts. MYVoice (Mobilizing Young men’s Voices) is a program that provides an opportunity for teenage boys across Metro Vancouver to come together in two all-male choirs to learn music, find their changed voices, develop their confidence, and nurture their interest and commitment to music and culture. Chor Leoni has won many awards at the national and international level and represented Canada in the European Broadcasting Union’s Let the Peoples Sing international choral competition. In July 2012 the choir won a dozen awards at the 51st Concorso Internazionale di Canto Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including two Audience Favourite awards, a special prize for the Most Interesting Artistic Program, and 2nd place Grand Prix overall. The choir has an extensive discography. Its Yuletide Fires CD was voted the Outstanding Choral Recording of 2004 by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors, and won a Western Canadian Music Award as the 2004 Outstanding Classical Recording. Circle of Compassion, featuring repertoire from recent Remembrance Day performances, was the recipient of the 2008 National Choral Award for Outstanding Choral Recording given by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors (ACCC), and its Healing Voices recording project, featuring music that focuses on healing and calming, also received the 2008 Outstanding Sponsorship Award from the ACCC.

In the last ten years, Erick Lichte has carved out a distinct niche in the vocal music world and concert life in North America. The Washington Post has hailed the “audacity” of his programming, the Chicago Tribune has noted the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs and Fanfare magazine declared that he created and helmed “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States.” As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two fulltime vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over sixty concerts a year in such venues as the Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, Merkin Hall, San Francisco Performances, Oregon Bach Festival, UCLA, and the Elora Festival. He has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, the Minnesota Orchestra, the James Sewell Ballet, and poet Robert Bly. His work with Cantus garnered the 2009 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. He has also been awarded major grants from Chamber Music America and the National Endowment for the Arts. Lichte is also a champion of new music and has been a part of the creation of over fifty new works. Composers Lichte has worked with include Lee Hoiby, Gavin Bryars, Steven Sametz, Edie Hill, Mary Ellen Childs, and Peteris Vasks. Lichte himself is an active arranger and composer whose music has been heard across the United States. He is especially known as a co-creator and musical arranger of the theatrical work All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, which has been broadcast nationally and has been presented in four national tours. As a choral conductor, Lichte has served as guest chorus master for the professional chorus of Chicago’s Music of the Baroque as well as the Great River Chorale, and One Voice Mixed Chorus. Lichte has also served on the faculty of Augsburg College and the University of Saint Catherine. He currently conducts the Portland State University Man Choir and University Choir, the Chancel Choir at Portland’s First United Methodist Church, and is Associate Conductor of the Oregon Repertory Singers. Lichte is a graduate of St. Olaf College where he studied with the renowned choral conductor Dr. Anton Armstrong and is currently studying with Dr. Ethan Sperry at Portland State University. Lichte is an ardent audiophile and is a Contributing Editor for Stereophile magazine where he writes equipment reviews of high performance audio equipment.

Ken Cormier Ken Cormier is a pianist equally at home in the classical, pop, and jazz genres. Upon completion of his classical studies at the UBC School of Music, his professional career began with three seasons as repetiteur with Vancouver Opera. He then moved into the world of professional music theatre, first with the Livent Company, and more recently with Vancouver’s Arts Club, in whose productions he continues to work regularly as keyboardist, arranger, and musical director. Ken has been with Chor Leoni since 1998. He makes his home in Burnaby with his wife Lisa and their two wonderful children.
