Breathe in hope

Welcome back. We love you and have missed you. This Remembrance Day program, as it has for 30 years, hopes to honour all who have served and fallen in war. But l feel just doing things the ways they have always been done is no longer good enough, so this concert has been crafted to also allow us to confront the wars in our own hearts. We hope this concert may create a space where both internal and external peace can be imagined and felt.

Erick Lichte, Artistic Director

concert supporters November 10th performance is supported by John Geddes and Johanna Shapira. November 11th evening performance is supported by Rosalind and Ken Hollett in loving memory of Frances Read, Roz’s mother. Fran’s love for music developed in her musical home in Twillingate, Newfoundland, and then extended to support and include her children, son-in-law and grandsons in the Chor Leoni family. With many veterans in the family, Fran was moved by Chor Leoni’s Remembrance Day concert each year.

Breathe in hope

THE COMPOSERS Erick Lichte Invocation: We Will Remember Them Poetry by Robert Laurence Binyon. “I believe in the act of remembrance. In this space we can confront our past — especially our failures and losses. It is my hope that in communally contemplating war each year, we might emerge each time with a renewed energy for peace, reconciliation and justice.”

Melissa Dunphy Waves of Gallipoli The text for Waves of Gallipoli has been gathered from tombstone inscriptions of soldiers who fell in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915-16. Private Robert Edward McIntyre, age 22; Private Alfred Edward James Rowe, aged 29; Private Alfred Hobbs, 1906, aged 18; Private Arthur Gilbert Whittle, aged 28; Private William Sampson, aged 25. These epitaphs are bookended by the poem The Last To Leave by Leon Gellert. “The metaphor here is the waves of human beings coming up against the shore and dying, and the waves of dead in the cemeteries.”

Ken Cormier Army Dreamers Poetry by Kate Bush “Army Dreamers was on a list of 67 songs banned from airplay by the BBC during the 1991 Gulf War. Using materials found within the original Kate Bush recording, my arrangement deliberately emphasizes the gentle, natural - and universal - human state of dreaming and the vast gulf between this state and the utter loss of war.”

Michael McGlynn Tenebrae Anonymous 11th century Irish poem; Lamentations 1:12 “In the end, we are all just blood beneath the earth and each moment is to be held onto.”

Henrik Dahlgren Son to Mother Poetry by Maya Angelou “I came across this poem by Maya Angelou, but it struck me as being too powerful and emotional for the music I was writing to carry it; everything I composed sounded banal next to Angelou’s words. I soon realize that I could use silence to enhance the text, rather than heaping layers and layers of music upon it. Silence is both terrifying and serious — in a sense, it is the only adequate counterpoint to the poetry.”

Dale Trumbore Breathe in Hope Poetry by Maya Jackson “There’s such a breadth and scope of emotion to Maya Jackson’s text, but working with these words taught me to lean into that emotional depth instead of shying away from it. I hope an audience would also lean into the piece’s plea to stick with something — including pain or other challenging emotions — for as long as needed in order to enact change or be changed yourself.”

Katerina Gimon Bell Tower Poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke (Sonnets to Orpheus II, 29) translated by Joanna Macy & Anita Barrows “I came across the text for Bell Tower, a translation of a poem about overcoming uncertainty and grief by Rainer Maria Rilke, in March 2020. What I found particularly striking and timely about this poem was how Rilke calls us not to run from the discomfort of our pain, but to live with it, because it doesn’t stay static. Rather, if we let it, our pain will turn to reveal the other side of the coin, which is our love for the world.”

Marques L.A. Garrett My Heart Be Brave Poetry by James Weldon Johnson “The first and last lines of the Johnson poem immediately stood out to me. In the midst of discrimination, our heart — the core of our being — must lead us into rightful change. And as we continue doing right, the principles of honesty, love, and justice will give us the power to strive for what is due all of humanity.”

Shruthi Rajasekar Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep Poetry by Mary Elizabeth Fry “My impetus behind the piece was to interpret the poem’s various evocations of nature as embodiments of ragas, the emotive modes of Indian music. I find the poem itself to be quite uplifting, for it offers the comfort that a loved one who has passed can still exist in a different form. This is my spiritual perspective: I don’t see them as having left, but having been reborn.”

riks Ešenvalds Lux Aeterna Poetry from the Requiem Mass “Lux Aeterna is my harmonically-melodic painting of a moment when both a choir’s singing and light-rays streaming through a stained- glass window resonate in the arches and vaults of a church.”

Don Macdonald Boundless and Infinite Poetry by Don Macdonald “As a former Chor Leoni singer (it’s been about 25 years since I last sang in the choir) the notion of composing a work for the Remembrance Day concert was both daunting and exhilarating. Boundless and Infinite was written with the music first and the poetry second. The main melody came to me very quickly but as is often the case when I write the poetry after the music, I agonized over every word for months. I wanted to create a mood that allowed for hope and a sense of community. This I did by writing poetry that reflected on the spirit of my father who passed away in Sept of 2020.”

chor leoni men’s choir

ABOUT CHOR LEONI Praised for its excellent intonation and wide palette of vocal colour and described as “one of the best male choirs on the continent” by Oregon Artswatch, Chor Leoni is one of the most active amateur ensembles in North America. Among the first choirs to pivot to a digital platform, Chor Leoni’s digital concerts and programs reached over 24,000 households worldwide during the lockdown. With stylistic grace and an adventurous spirit, Vancouver’s Singing Lions have enriched and transformed people’s lives through singing for three decades and are delighted to mark their 30 th season with a return to live performances. Chor Leoni is fortunate and privileged to sing on the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. In 2019 the ensemble received the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from the professional choral organization, Chorus America. The award recognizes artistic excellence, contribution to the choral art form, and organizational stability over a long period of time and may only be given once in an ensemble’s lifetime. The choir has been honoured with many other national and international awards, including five 1st place awards in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. Chor Leoni’s 2016 recording Wandering Heart received a perfect five-star rating from the UK’s prestigious Choir and Organ magazine, and was a featured CD for Minnesota Public Radio and WFMT Chicago. Chor Leoni champions new music and has commissioned hundreds of pieces for male choir, ranging from pop and folksong arrangements to modern works. This season, the choir appointed Don Macdonald as its Composer-in-Residence for a three-year term. The ensemble has commissioned works by notable composers such as riks Ešenvalds, Jocelyn Morlock, Melissa Dunphy, and many others.

Erick Lichte Erick Lichte has been hailed by Washington Post for the “audacity” of his programming and noted by the Chicago Tribune for the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs. The New York Times recently called his direction and composing “thrilling” and said of his work that the “sensation is tremendous and the musical chill effect engulfing.” As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over 60 concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and Minnesota Orchestra. In January 2013, he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Vancouver, Canada’s Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. Since that time, he has grown the choir into one of the most active and popular amateur choirs in North America, performing over 35 concerts a year to over 15,000 patrons. His first recording with Chor Leoni, Wandering Heart, received a perfect five-star review from the UK’s prestigious Choir and Organ Magazine, and Oregon Arts Watch has declared that, under his leadership, Chor Leoni is now “one of the best male choirs on the continent.” In the summer of 2018, he led Chor Leoni to multiple awards and Grand Prix appearances at both the Singapore and Bali International Choral Competitions. In 2020, his world premiere recording of the When There Is Peace: an Armistice Oratorio was nominated for a JUNO Award.
