ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE Welcome to Chameleonic’s second concert!

They say that money makes the world go ‘round. Does it? When the idea for “TAX MAN” came to me as a concert program, I was ready to plant my tongue firmly in cheek and allow the more whimsical side of what has been sung over the centuries about money to dominate this concert. It was my brilliant colleagues who organically pushed me in another direction by the music they chose. In the process, I’ve learned that there is a far more important matter at the core of what we’re dealing with in this performance. No matter what political party we align with (if any!), nobody likes to actually sign their money over to the government, or really to anything for which we can’t directly and immediately feel the benefit. When we do this, it feels like we’re being robbed.

When I first moved to NYC almost eight years ago, I remember the initial feeling of being intimidated by the sea of people here. Even though I was raised in an urban setting, I’d never seen so many people in one place, seemingly packed tightly together everywhere I turned. It was hard for me to find a sense of community—to even know where to begin. The longer I’ve been here, however, the smaller and more intimate the city seems. Likely like you, I have had my “New York” moments, running into people I know by chance amid thousands of faces randomly in the subway or on a street corner. This has reminded me that, in actuality, our shared community is very small in the grand scheme of life.

I have many people close to me whose personal opinions about politics differ greatly from mine. One day, while visiting my home in San Francisco and riding in the car with one of these people, she said to me in a fit of rage that it was “not her responsibility to pay for someone else’s life, mistakes, children, healthcare or the like.” While I can understand both sides of this, I couldn’t help but think of living here in NYC and all the faces of random strangers I see every single day of my life now...and the stories those faces tell...and the stories they hide.

The money isn’t what makes the world go ’round. It’s those people—the ones behind the faces we encounter every day. The money is only a means to an end.

Like love and kindness, we always get tenfold what we give to the world, to our shared community. True, there is pain, sacrifice, and even hardship involved sometimes; but how could we ever know peace and concord without knowing the sensations of their counterparts: turmoil, discord, and struggle? Tough as it is, we survive...and we are undoubtedly better for the wear. Knowing this and remembering those faces makes it easier for me to do my part. It makes it possible for us to do this work in the world.

I commend you for doing your part. It is our intention to celebrate that today—to celebrate you, and us, and this shared community we are building together. Thanks for being here with us. Please come say hi to me after the concert and let me know what you thought!

Talk is Cheap - Jeffrey Carter Program Note: This little project began as a "how'd you like me write something for you?" email chain, and led to a set of little ditties, mostly humorous, on pithy sayings about money and the love thereof. Along the way, I paid homage to Chopin, fife tunes, Orthodox liturgy, show tunes . . . and I included snippets of a Russian folk song, the Marseilles, and (see if you can find it) Yankee Doodle. The aim was fun, and I hope I've succeeded, both for audience and chorister. Don't look for profundity here; be prepared to laugh instead.

Those Trees - Gates Thomas Composer’s Note: In 1783, with the Revolutionary War ended, and having returned his commission as Commander-In-Chief of the Continental Army to Congress, George Washington galloped back to his beloved Mount Vernon. After 8 long years away at war, he was finally home, a private citizen again at last.

Yet as his biographer James Thomas Flexner has written, the tranquility Washington had envisioned for his retirement was not so easily realized. He was a changed man, rendered more secure and more philosophical by the experiences of war. Spying a grove of trees he had planted

CHAMELEONIC is a new 30-voice avocational choir in New York City. Its members come from many diverse musical interests, backgrounds, and age groups. The group seeks to cultivate seasoned choral singers in the greater NYC area who possess exemplary openness to amalgamated programming and sound singing and music reading techniques. Its concerts, in trademark Choral Chameleon fashion, combine unlimited styles of singing and musical genres to build bridges between the old and the new, the popular and the obscure, the spiritual and the secular. They address real human themes that are relevant to people's lives in this day and age. It is, in essence, more than a choir. It is a musical social movement and also a truly unique educational experience for singers and audience members alike. We're building the next generation of choral music devotees to ensure the future of this vital musical art form for generations to come! In an ever-changing world where human beings and their interests evolve, we believe our steadfast commitment to relevance and our heart-felt, personal approach to working with people will sow seeds of goodness and love where growth of these virtues is most needed.

CONDUCTOR BIOS Julie Waters grew up in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington, where she was able to participate in an extensive choral program under the direction of Dr. Sarah Graham at Sumner High School. She then went on to Western Washington University (WWU), where she studied Secondary Choral Music Education and Advanced Choral Conducting with Dr. Leslie Guelker-Cone, emphasizing the use of Labon Movement Analysis in conducting. While at WWU, Julie sang in the Concert Choir, whose repertoire consisted primarily of 20th century music. Julie moved to New York City where she joined Choral Chameleon in 2009 and became a co-director of Chameleonic in 2012. Julie also currently teaches K-5 Vocal Music at PS/MS 95 in the Bronx.

Jeffery R. Thyer is an active choral director, singer and concert producer in New York City. He holds a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from Ball State University and a church music degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. He is co-conductor of and singer with the vocal ensemble Chameleonic plus a member of the New York Festival Singers and the Choir at Church of the Holy Trinity. He is Managing Director of Choral Chameleon overseeing all business and management aspects of the organization. By day, he is the Associate Director of Program Development for Distinguished Concerts International New York, a concert production company. In that role, he guides the programming team for the concert series and works closely with directors to organize performances of major choral/orchestral works, world premieres and performances in venues like Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher at Lincoln Center and Disney Hall in LA. Jeffery made his mark in the choral and music production world at the American Choral Directors Association National Headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where he served as the Conference Consultant and Division Liaison to the Association’s seven regional divisions and assisted in the planning of eighteen national and divisional conferences. His duties included conference planning, artistic relations, budget planning, graphic design, web site management, advertising and exhibit sales, procedure and policy writing and more. A native of Indiana, Jeffery now makes his home in Williamsburg. Beyond choral music, Jeffery is a freelance website designer/ manager. www.JefferyThyer.com Evan Crawford has lived in New York since 2004 and has sung in venues throughout the city including church services, new music concerts, cabarets, and solo recitals. A lifelong choral music enthusiast, he sang for five years with the Brooklyn College Chamber Choir and was featured as a soloist numerous times in major works including Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Bach’s Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit. Evan has also

performed with the Musica Bella Orchestra in Bach’s B-Minor Mass, and in 2008 he toured with the Beijing Olympics Festival Chorus, singing at cultural festivals in Beijing and Shanghai. Evan holds B.M. and M.M. degrees in voice performance from the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music and has maintained a private voice teaching practice in Brooklyn for three years.

He currently studies voice with Adam Baritot and choral conducting with Vince Peterson.

Vince Peterson, is the Founder and Artistic Director of Choral Chameleon and Chameleonic. He also serves as Choirmaster and Organist for St. Paul’s Carroll Street in Brooklyn, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at Brooklyn College Conservatory. Distinguished performers and commissioners of his compositions and arrangements include Cantori New York, The Monmouth Civic Chorus, The SFArtsEd Players, Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, and the multi-Grammy® award-winning ensemble Chanticleer, who recently performed his arrangement of Tom Waits’s “Temptation” on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” to critical acclaim. In addition to numerous colleges and high schools across America, Vince’s work has been performed in prestigious venues such as Chicago Symphony Hall, San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House, The National Concert Hall of Hungary in Budapest, and New York’s own Metropolitan Museum of Art. His work as composer and choral conductor has been profiled in The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Brooklyn Eagle, I Care if You Listen, the Examiner online, and Time Out New York. He holds a BMus in Composition from SF Conservatory as well as a double MM from Mannes College of Music in Composition and Choral Conducting.

CHORAL CHAMELEON MISSION AND VISION Our Mission: The mission of Choral Chameleon is to engage its listeners in a diverse and innovative musical experience through its integrative concert programming and education outreach.

Our Vision: PERFORMANCE. Present distinctive musical performances of diverse repertoire combining styles and genres in new and interesting ways, honoring the voice as a unique instrument with a particular ability to reach human beings and transcend divisions of culture, nationality, gender, language, and age.

COLLABORATION. Work together in performance with other musicians including choral and instrumental ensembles; and unique types of instrumentalists such as those specializing in music from a certain period or culture. Create new, innovative works with living composers of choral music, through such possible avenues as workshops, festivals, and commissions.

EDUCATION. Inspire the next generation of choral singers, conductors, and composers through invitational choral festivals at the high school level; public and private workshops on technique and style; and hands-on learning opportunities for students of choral conducting and composition.

Summer Institute - June 3-11 The Choral Chameleon Institute is an eight-day intensive workshop in New York City, designed to immerse emerging composers and conductors of choral music in the intricacies of the choral idiom in a nurturing environment surrounded by respected professionals. It gives students an opportunity to explore and experiment with writing and conducting techniques in a “best-case scenario.”

During the course of the institute, many new pieces of choral music are cultivated and ultimately publicly performed, with live recording of the concert. Standards of the choral repertoire serve as a springboard for young conductors to work on challenging matters of gesture, musicianship and rehearsal technique. Generous lab and podium time is given to all participants to ensure maximum practical and hands-on experience. The Choral Chameleon Institute also places heavy emphasis on ear training and analysis as means of deep, joyful discovery and informed, innovative interpretation. The program also includes an ear-training workshop.
