Phlox is a familiar plant in many gardens. It is easy to grow, hardy, almost entirely pest free and makes a great mound of colour looking good mixed in with other cottage garden plants. The phlox in Crescent Garden is white rather than one of the bright colours most often associated with the plant, but it still stands out clearly in the flower bed near the railings in front of the fountain. The name, phlox, comes from the Greek word meaning flame as so many of the genus are brightly coloured.
The full botanical name of this particular species, usually known as garden phlox, is Phlox paniculata in the family Polemoniaceae. It is native to large swathes of the east coast of USA
and extending into Canada. It blooms there, as it does in our gardens, from June to September, enjoying plenty of sunshine and a damp, but not waterlogged soil. This summer it is fortunate that the phlox in Crescent Garden is planted near the automatic watering system, put in some years ago, mainly to benefit the roses growing alongside the railings. Each flower has 5 petals and 5 stamens with a 3 branched stigma emerging above the stamens in the centre of the flower. The flowers are relatively small, but make a great show by being grouped together in a panicle; hence the specific name. The petals are fused together at their bases to form a tube, with nectar at the bottom of it, hence butterflies are one of the main pollinators as they have a long tube like tongue called a proboscis which can reach the nectar at the bottom of the tube, while their bodies brush against the stamens to pick up pollen to be carried to other plants. Bees and other pollinators are also attracted to phlox.
Phlox plants were introduced into Britain from Virginia in the 1730s. By 1745. It was well established and written about by plantsman, John Bartram.
So, an attractive and easy plant to grow, so try some in your own garden if you don’t already have some. Or come and admire it in Crescent Garden.
Ideal for front gardens as statement pieces, or for smaller rear gardens where you want the sound of water without the footprint that a pond requires. There are a multitude of fountain designs to choose from and the configurations are endless. These are also really good for attracting birds to drink and wash.

An event close to home on Sunday 22nd June was the Solent Airport 5k. It’s not very often you get an opportunity to run on an airfield and several of our members took part and had an enjoyable morning. The profits from this event go to Naomi House and Jackspace hospice for children and young adults.
Gosport Road Runners are an England Athletics affiliated running club. We invite and encourage members of all running levels and age groups to achieve and perform to the best of their ability over a range of distances ranging from Couch to 5k up to marathon distance and beyond. Young people aged 1417 years are welcome to join the club with a responsible adult.
GROUP RUN - We split into 3, 4 and 5-mile groups (sometimes 7 miles) and run at a relaxed pace, sticking together and matching the speed of the slowest runner. It’s all about
getting some miles in, enjoying fresh air and chatting with friends – definitely not about speed.
LOOPY RUN – Great for all abilities! Everyone runs at their own pace, but with regular ‘loop-back’ points where faster runners turn back to re-join the group. This way, no-one gets left behind, and speedier runners get extra distance. A tail runner always stays at the back to keep an eye on things.
Intervals – Usually on Tuesdays, these sessions, led by a qualified coach or run leader, focus on speed and fitness. Expect structured bursts of fast running mixed with recovery. We stick to a set area (like a path or rugby pitch) so all paces stay together. It’s tough but super rewarding!
TIME TRIALS – Once a month (usually the first Tuesday), we run a 5k time trial (sometimes other distances). It’s all about racing against yourself – seeing if you’re getting faster or just enjoying a sociable 5k with no pressure. The course is flat, great for personal best times, and fully marshalled by club members – so if you’re not coming, come along and cheer.
OUT OF TOWN RUNS – Summer means scenic running! We kick things off with our classic ‘bluebell run’ and continue through beautiful countryside. Occasionally, we throw in a wellearned stop for breakfast or pizza, depending on the time of day!
HILLS – Every so often, we mix things up with hill training. These sessions, usually around Gosport, Fareham and Titchfield, involve running up and down various hills over routes between 4 and 6 miles. It’s all about building stamina and endurance-perfect for prepping for tougher races and cross-country events.
HEADTORCH – In winter, we take things offroad at night! These Friday evening runs (roughly once a month) start from Cherque
Farm or similar locations and cover 4-5 miles at a relaxed, stick-together pace. It’s less about speed and more about adventure – a fun way to start the weekend.
SOCIAL RUNS – These range from a festive Mulled Wine Run to the Summer Relay, out of town Pizza runs and a Spring Treasure Hunt, we love an excuse to get together. These aren’t serious races (well, maybe just a little competitive!), but they guarantee plenty of laughs along the way.

Do you have important legal documents in place to protect your interests and make life easier for you and your family, whatever the future brings?
If you have received a diagnosis of dementia, or are concerned about becoming ill and unable to cope with paying your bills, wouldn’t it be helpful for a family member to be able to step in and deal with your finances? If your family member needed to make decisions for you, instead of just acting on your instructions, they would need your formal written authority to do this.
Formal authority can be given by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney. This document will allow your family member to take over managing your money, either temporarily or long term.
You can also create a Lasting Power of Attorney which allows your family member to make decisions for you about medical treatment, if you are unable for any reason to make your own decisions. This is not the same as an Advance Decision, which is a document which sets out your decision to refuse medical treatment in the future, under specific conditions.
If you are caring for an elderly relative, or are likely to be doing so in the future, a Lasting Power of Attorney will mean that you can provide the support your relative needs and access services on their behalf, without the difficulties, stress and resistance you would otherwise encounter.
Having a Will gives you peace of mind that your money, property and personal possessions will be going to the people you have chosen to benefit. An out of date Will can cause problems within the family or mean that a chosen beneficiary receives nothing.
If you have any unanswered questions about Wills or Lasting Powers of Attorney, Christine will be pleased to help, so do please get in touch for a free, no obligation, chat.
